New Greenpeace USA report, "Dollars vs. Democracy: Inside the Fossil Fuel Industry’s Playbook to Suppress Protest and Dissent in the United States" exposes the corporate playbook that has helped shield 60% of all US oil and gas production from protest and civil disobedience! 9 of the top 10 companies that lobbied the most for anti-protest bills since 2017 are fossil fuel companies. They include: They include ExxonMobil, Koch Industries, and Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Enbridge and TC Energy. Thanks for doing this research and calling the bad players out Greenpeace! Major Italian oil company Eni is facing the country’s first climate lawsuit, brought by twelve Italian citizens, Greenpeace Italy and Italian advocacy group ReCommon. The plaintiffs claim the energy company with headquarters in Rome knowingly contributed to climate change by using “lobbying and greenwashing” to push for more fossil fuels despite having known the risks they posed since 1970, reported The Guardian. “The urgency of taking action against the climate crisis has prompted us to bring the first climate lawsuit in Italy against the country’s largest energy company,” Matteo Ceruti, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, told DeSmog. More From EcoWatch How Does Your State Generate Power? Can You Switch Power Suppliers? Solar Energy Pros and Cons The plaintiffs — which include the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the development bank Cassa Depositi e Prestiti S.p.A., both influential shareholders of Eni — are claiming past and potential future damages, saying Eni’s policies violate the Paris Agreement, a press release from Greenpeace said. “ENI scored record profits in 2022, yet it continues to invest in expanding its fossil fuels business, dismissing climate impacts and ignoring local communities in Italy and around the world who are suffering the consequences of the climate emergency,” said Chiara Campione, head of the climate unit at Greenpeace Italy, in the press release. Greenpeace Italy and ReCommon uncovered a study from between 1969 and 1970, commissioned by Eni’s own Isvet research center, that warned of an imminent climate crisis that could result from the burning of fossil fuels and the resulting accumulation of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere, DeSmog reported. “[C]arbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to a recent report by the U.N. Secretary, given the increased use of [fossil fuels], has increased over the last century by an average of 10 percent worldwide; around the year 2000 this increase could reach 25 percent, with ‘catastrophic’ consequences on climate,” the report said. DeSmog discovered that Ecos, a company magazine put out by Eni, repeatedly referenced climate change in the late 1980s and 1990s, while at the same time promoting natural gas — the main component of which is planet-warming methane — as a “clean” fuel in advertising campaigns. ReCommon and Greenpeace Italy also uncovered a 1978 report, Environment and Exhaustible or Renewable Sources of Energy, by Eni’s Tecneco company that warned of the danger to the climate the increased risk of fossil fuels posed, with a prediction of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels by the year 2000. “It is assumed that with the increasing consumption of fossil fuels, which began with the industrial revolution, the CO2 concentration will reach 375-400 [parts per million or ppm] in the year 2000,” the report said, according to DeSmog. “This increase is considered by some scientists as a possible long-term problem, especially since it could change the thermal balance of the atmosphere leading to climate changes with serious consequences for the biosphere.” It turns out that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere rose from 325 ppm to 371 ppm between 1970 and 2000. The lawsuit’s citizen plaintiffs come from areas suffering from drought, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, glacial melt and other climate change impacts, the press release said. “The region where I live, Piedmont, is already suffering the effects of dramatic drought, as the very low level of rainfall recorded this winter show[s], a problem that is likely to get worse in the future,” said plaintiff Rachele Caravaglios in the press release. “I don’t think it’s fair that Italy’s main energy supplier, of which the state is the largest shareholder, can continue year after year, an investment program that goes against what the best available climate science recommends, limiting our options to create a sustainable, resilient and equitable future for all.” The plaintiffs are also demanding that Eni revise its industrial strategy so that emissions are reduced by a minimum of 45 percent by 2030, compared to 2020 levels, in order to pursue efforts to keep the average temperature increase worldwide below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as stated in the Paris Agreement. They are also demanding that the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance adopt an “ambitious climate policy” as a guide to keep its company engagement in accordance with Paris Agreement goals, the press release said. “These findings reinforce and add to the pattern found in previous research: oil majors understood the catastrophic effects their products would have on the world, yet failed to warn the public, concealed their knowledge, denied the problem, and obstructed efforts to solve it,” said Ben Franta, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Sustainable Law Programme, as The Guardian reported. The number of climate cases around the world has more than doubled since 2015 to more than 2,000, according to the press release. These actions have increasingly been filed by non-governmental organizations and individuals asserting the rights of those suffering from the impacts of the climate crisis. “I am suing ENI and the state-owned entities that control it because their strategies do not comply with the Paris Agreement in terms of CO2 emissions. ENI’s actions exacerbate the climate crisis, worsening impacts for me and for the region where I live, Polesine. Near the Po Delta, the sea will advance more and more into our lands, and as the salt wedge rises. [W]e risk finding ourselves living in a desert or being forced to abandon our home and our land,” said plaintiff Vanni Destro in the press release.

Environmental groups Greenpeace and ReCommon said on Tuesday they had launched a lawsuit against Italian energy group Eni (ENI.MI) for contributing to climate change with its fossil fuel businesses. Greenpeace said it had served notices about the lawsuit to Eni as well as the Italian Economy Ministry and Italian state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), which jointly control the company with a stake of around 30%. The lawsuit would be a first for Italy. "The plaintiffs are ... asserting their right to claim damages for the effects of climate change, for which Italy's largest energy companies bear a heavy responsibility," Greenpeace said in a written briefing. It said it hoped to force a rethink of Eni's business strategy and stir the Italian government and CDP into playing "a stronger role in ensuring that ENI complies with the Paris Agreement (on climate change) and respects human rights." An Eni spokesperson said the company would "prove in court the groundlessness of the lawsuit" as well as the validity of its own "transformation and decarbonisation strategy".

Zeebrugge – This morning 10 climbers and 12 kayaktivists from Greenpeace Belgium occupied Fluxys terminal in Zeebrugge to denounce Fluxys’ role, among European gas operators, in the recent development of US LNG imports to Europe, in total disregard of global climate objectives and human rights, as documented in a recent Greenpeace investigation. The environmental organisation is calling for the immediate end of US and European development of gas contracts and infrastructures. Five inflatables with Greenpeace Belgium activists from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK entered Fluxys terminal in Zeebrugge. They climbed onto the quays used for loading, unloading and transboarding the large tankers used to transport fossil LNG gas and deployed a 4x5m banner reading “Gas kills”. Kayaks also entered the terminal. https://www.miragenews.com/greenpeace-occupies-fluxys-lng-terminal-over-996340/

A year into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, one of the invader's tactics has been to target key infrastructure hubs in order to cut power in hospitals, schools or water sanitation plants. When you're personally under constant threat of a military assault, it can be quite difficult to think about long-term environmental impact, but some non-profit organizations such as Greenpeace CEE or EcoClub have been hard at work helping setup small-scale solar power plants at key locations in the country, such as hospitals and water treatment plants. Once the installation is done, as these infrastructures are no longer dependent on the national power grid, they are able to keep light, heating and fresh water on, making their choice safer for everyone. As a donator to Greenpeace (Sweden) I got this letter from them, where they summarise their greatest achievements in 2022. They definitely deserve a climate love for what they have done during the year! For you who don't know Swedish, this is in short what they have done: - Pushed the state-owned timber company Sveaskog to reduce deforestation. - Made peaceful protests in kayaks (!) against Russian fossil fuels. After that, EU made an oil embargo towards Russia. - Pushing for the new law, which is hindering products connected to deforestation to be imported to the EU, to become even stronger and widely applicable. - Several areas in the sea Kattegatt are now protected from harmful fishing - partly thanks to Greenpeace' action some years ago to place out granite rocks to hinder fishing trawls. - The world's most northern oil field Wisting has been stopped, which will avoid a lot of emissions going into the atmosphere and preserving biodiversity. - Greenpeace is also working to reduce the amount of plastic and plastic waste. In 2022, many of the world's governments agreed to develop an binding agreement to reduce plastic waste, among others.

In reaction to the announcement that Sultan al-Jaber, head of the state oil giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s largest oil companies, will lead the COP28 climate talks in Dubai later this year, Tracy Carty, Global Climate Politics expert with Greenpeace International, said: “Greenpeace is deeply alarmed at the appointment of an oil company CEO to lead the global climate negotiations. This sets a dangerous precedent, risking the credibility of the UAE and the trust that has been placed in them by the UN on behalf of people, current and future generations. COP28 needs to conclude with an uncompromised commitment to a just phase out of all fossil fuels: coal, oil and gas. There is no place for the fossil fuel industry in the global climate negotiations.” https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/57860/greenpeace-response-on-cop28-appointment/

I just saw this sign from Greenpeace at a sports store announcing Black Week offers - it says "buy NOTHING and save the planet" and "Save even more!". I really agree with that the Black Friday/ Black Week thing has become too big and only leads to us buying more stuff, which is causing even larger emissions and using even more natural resources. In addition, buying nothing is even cheaper than buying something on discount ;) So, therefore I don't want to buy anything which is on deal this week. And I think neither should you.

Over time, global leaders have been converging in big summits and conferences to discuss matters that impact on the environment. Many are the times they come up with agreement and treaties that only stay in the papers they are typed on and don't manifest i the real world. This climate love is for the climate activists from Greenpeace who realized that after summits leaders do not actualize their promises to the people which pushes back the efforts of saving the planet. During the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, the Greenpeace activists said that the Governments must adopt strong, enforceable treaties to protect oceans affected by global warming, overfishing and rampant pollution. The activists said that the leaders are failing to deliver on their promise to protect the oceans and it is time they uphold their promises and ensure that they empower the community in order to achieve the goals. it is only right for the global leaders to check all the boxes when it comes to implementing and upholding the agreements and treaties made during the conferences. It is important to force them to realise that the community has trusted them to be its representatives and if they fail; they have failed the entire community. We are calling upon all climate activists to push for change and approaching the leaders head-on is the only way we can achieve the desired change. 7 WAYS GEN-Z CAN GET INVOLVED IN CLIMATE ACTION A child born in 2020 will be 80 years old in the year 2100. Some of us may not be around then so we can only imagine the future Generation Alpha will face if climate change continues to intensify. Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, heatwaves and droughts are all symptoms of environmental breakdown that will get far far worse if governments do not act urgently to cut emissions, protect ecosystems, promote green energy, support adaptation to reduce vulnerability and cultivate strong international cooperation between them and businesses, including the most polluting sectors. The roots of this climate and nature crisis lie in a global system that puts the interests of a wealthy few above the health of people and the ecosystems we depend on. The system is deeply unjust. Those impacted first and worst by ecological crisis have done least to cause it. We are lucky to live in a world where youth climate leaders exist and are loud and proud in their demands to International organisations and corporations and governments to bring on systemic change. Raeesah Noor-Mahomed, a 18 year old activist from South Africa, 20 year old Yero Sarr in Senegal, 22 year old Fatna Ikrame El Fanne in Morocco and Elizabeth Watuthi in Kenya, are some of these 10 African youth climate activists changing the face of the planet. They serve as examples of how you and me as a millennial or Gen-Z can step up and demand better for our generation and future generations. How can a Gen-Z participate in climate talks and take action for a better liveable future? These are some ways you can get involved in the community around you to champion climate justice and hold decision makers to account. https://www.greenpeace.org/international/story/54362/7-ways-gen-z-and-you-can-get-involved-in-climate-action-now/

Greenpeace has released a real-time Russian oil and gas tanker tracker, visible for everyone. The first of its kind anywhere in the world, Greenpeace’s tracker uses satellite data to show supertankers transporting Russian fossil fuels. The tracker exposes how fossil fuels are still being imported despite the government’s ban on Russian vessels arriving into the UK. At the time of writing this climate review, the tracker was following 80 tankers carrying Russian fossil fuels bound for Europe. The Russian Tanker tracker: https://twitter.com/RUTankerTracker

SEOUL, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Greenpeace Korea unveiled what it called the "last voting booth" in downtown Seoul on Thursday as part of a campaign to bring climate issues to the foreground of South Korea's presidential election in March. The booth, a tattered replica of a traditional polling machine, was placed near the city's iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace to raise awareness that this election "could be the last vote to stop the climate crisis in Korean political history," the environmental group said in a statement. A video loop inside the booth showed a simulation of the palace submerged under flooding due to extreme weather and rising sea levels. "We think that climate change is one of the most important issues to be discussed during the presidential campaign," Daul Jang, government relations and advocacy specialist for Greenpeace Korea, told UPI. "So we wanted to show people that unless we address climate change, as soon as possible and as ambitiously as possible, our future is at risk right now." South Korea remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels for its energy needs, generating around 40% of its electricity from coal and only 6.5% from renewable sources. The country has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. President Moon Jae-in introduced a $60 billion Green New Deal in 2020 to invest in eco-friendly industries and technologies. Moon also committed in November to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030, a significant upgrade from the previous target of 26%. However, Greenpeace and other climate watchdogs say South Korea's goals are not nearly enough to meet the demands of the 2015 Paris Climate Accords, which aim to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in order to avoid environmental catastrophe. The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report in August that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called a "code red for humanity," saying that the earth was already "perilously close" to the 1.5-degree threshold and required bold and immediate action. Greenpeace Korea released a seven-point climate policy agenda, which includes raising the ratio of renewable energy to 50% and completely phasing out coal plants by 2030, and has asked the presidential candidates to respond. Yoon Suk-yeol, the candidate from the opposition People Power Party, has indicated support for South Korea's 2050 carbon-neutrality goal, while Lee Jae-myung from Moon's Democratic Party has proposed moving the target up by 10 years and establishing a carbon tax. Jang said that neither of the two major candidates has been specific enough with their plans, however, and noted that climate change has been an afterthought on the campaign trail and media coverage. Greenpeace is calling for the candidates to hold climate-focused television debates. The environmental group also warned Thursday of the perils to South Korea's economic bottom line posed by climate change. It shared a Deloitte Korea report that estimated the South Korean economy could lose a total of $780 billion by the year 2070 if it fails to adequately respond to the climate crisis, while aggressive action could add over $1.9 trillion in that same time period. Climate change "is not considered as important as security or economic issues, even though the climate crisis itself is a serious national security and national economic issue," Jang said. "This is the last Korean election for us to properly address climate change in time."

The Grahamstown High Court in Makhanda ordered Shell to immediately cease its seismic blasting along South Africa’s Wild Coast. A victory for the activists from Greenpeace Africa and Sustaining the Wild Coast. 🙌🙌 Judge Gerald Bloem said that Shell was under a duty to meaningfully consult with the communities and individuals who would be impacted by the seismic survey, and that based on the evidence provided, Shell failed to do so in the case of the applicant communities who hold customary rights, including fishing rights. They also hold a special spiritual and cultural connection to the ocean. It was thus crucial for Shell to consult these communities and understand how the survey may impact upon them. They did not. The judge found that the exploration right, which was awarded on the basis of a substantially flawed consultation process is thus unlawful and invalid. The applicants’ right to meaningful consultation constitutes a prima facie right which deserves to be protected by way of an interim interdict. “The voices of the voiceless have been heard. The voices of the directly affected people have at last been heard, and the constitutional rights of indigenous people have been upheld. This case reminds us that constitutional rights belong to the people and not to government, and that the only way that we can assure that the rights of indigenous people are living – and not just written on paper – is if we challenge government decisions that disregard these rights. This victory is hugely significant because we have made sure that the rights of indigenous communities are kept alive.” – Sinegugu Zukulu, Sustaining the Wild Coast (SWC) The applicants provided a massive body of expert evidence on the threat of harm to marine life, and this evidence establishes that, without intervention by the court, there is a real threat that the marine life would be irreparably harmed by the seismic survey. Against the acceptance of the body of expert evidence, Shell’s denial that its activities will have an adverse impact on marine life cannot be sustained. The judge was satisfied that the applicants have established a reasonable apprehension of irreparable harm to marine life. In addition to the harm to marine life, the applicants have also established how the seismic survey will firstly, negatively impact on the livelihood of the fishers, and secondly, cause cultural and spiritual harm. Since the applicants were successful in obtaining the interim interdict, and because Minister Mantashe also opposed the application, the Minister and Shell are accordingly ordered to pay the applicants’ costs. Executive director of Greenpeace International Jennifer Morgan on Thursday issued a warning for countries to avoid trying to "greenwash" ongoing global pollution ahead of the upcoming 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). “This Glasgow meeting really is a vital moment where governments need to be courageous,” Morgan told The Associated Press. “They need to show they’ve understood the science, listen to their people and go much further than they’ve been stating thus far, and give that kind of hope and confidence to their people that they got this and that they’re willing to do things that their corporate interests don’t want them to do," she said. I'm wondering why so few organisations talk about reducing the consumption of animal products?! Most of the rainforests are being destroyed due to animal agriculture. Furthermore the oceans are getting wiped out because of overfishing. Seriosly, we don't necessarily need to invent the craziest technology. We could do SOOO SOO much just by adjusting our consumption behavior. If everybody in our western civalisation would eat animal products only once a week (for e.g.) so much of the ocean and rainforests could be saved. Why all the big organisations aren't taking steps to inform consumers more about the power they have if they switch to a more flexitarian or even better: a vegan diet? Why do they not promote the benefits of a plant-based diet? It is the easiest, cheapest and fastest way to reduce climate change. And in addition everybody would eat healthier!! This would be a proper start to save us some time and work on further solutions!

Agree it is helpful It is a very common discussion imho. I and many won't become full vegetarian. Flexitarian is a good step eating a modest amount of meat. Also the alternative have to become common. Like grown meat 🍖. We won't solve all the problems by reducing our total needs, the corona lockdown s have shown, that it won't be enough .... To only do that!
•
137 w
Thanks for your comment! But the corona lockdown caused even more consumption - at least in Germany: 10% increase in obesity under young children for example. We can produce food for over 80 BILLION livestock animals but still about 800 Million People on the planet are starving to death. So we definitely don't have a problem with overpopulation. We have a consumption behavior problem on this planet. And a more mindful consumption would benefit humanity AND the planet. In my opinion organisations should put more pressure on the governments so the plant-based alternatives would be cheaper and the governments would stop to subsidize animal product companies so so ridicolously like they do now. On this aspect I agree with you: the alternatives have to become common. But let me tell you Jehannes: I have never thought that one day I would eat plant-based - but now I am. And it was the best decision ever made. People can change opinions, I'm the living example. It opened so much and it didn't hurt at all because eating plant-based has nothing to do with giving up great taste. Still I don't think everybody needs to be vegan. A more mindful consumption would be a great start!

As a result of the climate crisis becoming more and more noticeable in people's everyday lives and those in power failing to act, the courts have been given an increasingly important role in climate work as they can push for faster and sharper measures. In three years, the number of lawsuits concerning the climate has doubled internationally. Here you can read about some of the lawsuits that Greenpeace has pursued with allies. It is thanks to this that we can continue to hold those in power and the oil giants accountable so that they do not get away with making short-term decisions at the expense of the environment and the climate. Victory in climate process against Shell This is great! At the end of May, a Dutch court ruled that the company Shell is responsible for climate destruction. It is a historic victory for the environmental movement and everyone who experiences or will experience the consequences of the climate crisis. This is the first time a multinational company has been held responsible for climate damage and received an order to reduce its emissions. Shell must now change course radically to reduce its emissions by 45% by 2030, in line with the 1.5-degree target. Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth in the Netherlands) started the trial together with 17379 Dutch citizens and a coalition consisting of Greenpeace in the Netherlands, ActionAid, Both ENDS, Fossielvrij NL, Jongeren Milieu Actief and Waddenvereniging Undomar won victory in Germany The environmental movement has also had an important victory in Germany, this time with a constitutional trial at the German Supreme Court. The decision says that the government's climate law partly violates the constitution and must be tightened to be in line with the Paris Agreement. According to the German Climate Act, many of the emission reductions will not be taken until after 2030, which means that large parts of the burden of solving the climate crisis will be shifted to those who are young today. The Climate Act thus violates young people's basic human rights. The lawsuit was filed by nine young people with the support of Greenpeace and two other organizations. It has received a great deal of attention and already a week after it was presented, the government announced a review of the climate law. Activists take Norwegian climate law case to European Court of Justice Six young climate activists, together with the environmental organizations Greenpeace Norden and Natur og Ungdom, are now submitting a historic application to the European Court of Human Rights. Environmental activists argue that by allowing new oil drilling in the midst of a climate crisis, Norway is violating fundamental human rights. Equinor will report climate emissions From next year, Norwegian state-owned Equinor will report the company's climate emissions from all oil fields around the world. This emerged during Equinor's Annual General Meeting in May. So far, the company has only reported emissions in Norway, so this is a big step in the right direction and will mean that shareholders and the Norwegian people now have the opportunity to see what the state-owned company is actually doing abroad. The decision comes after Greenpeace and WWF submitted a proposal to Equinor's general meeting where we asked them to report greenhouse gas emissions from all their operations around the world.

Greenpeace podcast "System Change" - a podcast about how we stop fixing the climate with tape. System Change, what does it really mean? Carl Schlyter from Greenpeace goes beyond the daily political debate in this exploratory podcast with guests. We talk about how we create change, together. During the summer, we will release 8 episodes that examine different parts of the system change we need. You can listen to the episodes here or search for the "System Change" in the podcast player you prefer. We are happy that so many agree with us that we need to end the era of false solutions and address the fundamental causes of planetary destruction. Our pod aims to go deep without drowning in details, and always presenting solutions. Some of the coming episodes will be in English (1 during the summer).

A senior ExxonMobil lobbyist has been captured on camera, revealing how the oil giant uses its power and influence to water down US climate legislation. The explosive footage was obtained by Unearthed, Greenpeace UK’s investigative platform, who posed as head-hunters to obtain the information from one of ExxonMobil’s most senior Washington lobbyists. The recordings appear to reveal the secretive behind-the-scenes activities of a lobbyist for a company that claims in public to support action on climate change, while fighting against legislative attempts to tackle it. This is very upsetting. Thank you, Greenpeace, for doing important work on bringing light to those evil acts! I am a proud backer of your organization. Keep it up! Such a lobby is indeed ridiculous but the expose is good to shed light on such a critical issue to the global public on how selfish some individuals are just to fed for their worn out deep pockets.
