A significant victory for environmental conservation has been achieved following a decision by the Lands Court in Kenya. The Lands and Environmental court has granted a conservatory order, as requested by the East African Wild Life Society, halting the Kenya National Highways Authority from proceeding with the planned construction of a road cutting through the Aberdares National Park and Aberdares Forest. This decision underscores the importance of preserving these vital natural habitats and sets a precedent for prioritizing environmental protection over infrastructure development in ecologically sensitive areas. https://nation.africa/kenya/news/conservationists-win-after-court-suspends-sh4-4bn-aberdare-road-project-4593008

Road construction and expansion result in loss of wildlife habitat by transforming natural habitats to pavement, dirt tracks, and cleared roadsides or right-of-ways. Some wildlife are more vulnerable to habitat loss than others. Indeed this was a good decision.

The 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the UN’s largest yearly assembly focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment, happened in UN headquarters New York from March 11th to March 22nd this year, centering on the priority theme of “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.” During the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) on March 22nd, 2024, UN Member States made significant commitments to enhance financing and institutions to eliminate poverty among women and girls. The resulting Agreed Conclusions acknowledge the disproportionate impact of poverty on women and girls during crises and advocate for increased resources to address this issue. Among the recommendations outlined in the Agreed Conclusions are the mobilization of financial resources from both public and private sectors, the bolstering of international financial structures, the integration of a gender perspective into national budgeting processes, and the prevention of regressive taxation that unfairly affects women and girls with limited or no income. This two-week session, the largest UN gathering dedicated to gender equality, attracted world leaders, including two Heads of State, three vice-presidents, over 100 Ministers, and 4,800 representatives from civil society organizations, making it the second-highest attendance recorded in CSW history. Alongside CSW68, approximately 270 side events were hosted by UN Member States, intergovernmental organizations, and UN entities, while civil society and youth-led organizations organized more than 760 parallel events as part of the NGO CSW68 Forum. The active participation of young people, including adolescent girls, throughout various sessions, including the Youth Forum, provided an opportunity for youth delegates to share experiences, knowledge, and good practices, emphasizing the various dimensions of inequality exacerbating the experience of poverty among young women and girls. The Youth Interactive Dialogue underscored the significance of integrating critical youth perspectives into the official sessions of the CSW. The UN Women gave a press release on the outcome of #CSW68. UN Women welcomes the adoption of robust blueprint to end women’s poverty | UN Women – Headquarters
The 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) delivered today robust commitments by UN Member States to strengthen financing and institutions to eradicate women’s and girls’ poverty. The outcome document (or Agreed Conclusions) recognizes that women and girls living in poverty become ‘shock absorbers’ in times of crisis, and that further efforts are needed to increase resources to address women’s and girls’ poverty.

The goal is to achieve a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/record-us-renewable-energy-investment-not-enough-meet-climate-goals-report-2024-02-21/?taid=65d5cad270a0d90001cb2258&utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Tren

As the world stands on the brink of irreversible climate disaster, multinational food company Danone continues to contribute to environmental pollution by littering Indonesian rivers with their Aqua-branded water bottles. A recent study conducted by Sungai Watch, a Bali-based environmental non-profit that deploys river barriers all over Indonesia to prevent plastic debris from entering the ocean, has found that Aqua-branded single-use water bottles are the most commonly littered items. This is despite Danone's sustainability commitment made in 2018, which aimed to remove more plastic from the environment than it uses by 2025 and pledged to increase the ratio of recycled plastic it uses to make its bottles to 50% by 2025. I call on Danone to fulfill its pledge to save our mother planet. https://www.eco-business.com/news/b-corp-certified-bottled-water-brand-aqua-tops-audit-of-indonesias-biggest-plastic-polluters/

Such a large water bottling company remaining adamant to the amazing changes in the circular economy speaks much of their don't care nature. They must change ways or cease operations

This is absurd! Danone company should feel ashamed of their work. The government of Indonesia need to take serious action toward that company.

AMAZON RAINFOREST COULD REACH ‘TIPPING POINT’ BY 2050, SCIENTISTS WARN A study by Bernardo Flores of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil found that 15% of the Amazon had already been cleared and another 17% had been degraded by human activity, such as logging, fires, and under-canopy extraction. A further 38% of the Amazon may be weakened as a result of the prolonged droughts over the past decade. As a result of these activities, the Amazon rainforest could hit a tipping point by 2050. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/feb/14/amazon-rainforest-could-reach-tipping-point-by-2050-scientists-warn

This is quite alarming..Amazon being the biggest wet land in the world...it should be protected...and legal action taken on those who carry out barbaric actions such as cutting down of trees knowing the kind of impact they bring upon the earth.

That's a huge warning⚠️ from scientists. The world leader's as well to the general public needs to act about this grave matter for protection and alternatives to avert it from happening.

As it is, deforestation continues to plague the Amazon rainforest despite the efforts of governments mandated to protect it. Recently, Brazil's Lula has intensified efforts to stop mining and logging in the forest, but there is only so much he can do. Who exactly bankrolls these malicious efforts?

Kenya targets to begin the construction of its first nuclear power plant in 2027. This is even as the country seeks to further diversify its energy generation amid rising demand and push for zero-carbon energy. It is now emerging that the country is ready to fully adopt nuclear applications as it gears up to operationalize its first nuclear power plant by 2035. A site has already been identified along the Coastal belt and feasibility studies are underway. https://nation.africa/kenya/health/construction-of-first-nuclear-power-plant-to-begin-in-2027-4521290

It is great that Kenya is willing to adopt nuclear energy... despite the opposition of the project by the local community where the nuclear plant will be located..this could actually have a positive impact if appropriate measures were taken.the locals should also be educated on the measures being taken to ensures that the locals are protected from any disasters that may arise from the plants..and perhaps then, the people in the community will embrace it.

With proper regulations and safety measures in place, nuclear energy could contribute to Kenya's development and energy security while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Well this is good news for Kenya. Considering that most of energy production in Kenya is Renewable energy. A move to nuclear energy means that use of fossil fuel to produce electricity will totally end.

Climate change and nature loss pose greatest risks for humanity The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report for 2024 paints a stark picture of the challenges facing humanity over the next decade. With extreme weather events and critical changes to Earth systems topping the list of concerns, it's evident that environmental risks loom large on the horizon. The report emphasizes that while misinformation and disinformation pose immediate threats, the long-term dangers are predominantly environmental in nature. https://www.wwf.eu/?12625966/Climate-change-and-nature-loss-pose-greatest-risks-for-humanity-WEF-Global-Risk-Report-2024
