Farm Generations Cooperative launched GrownBy in March 2020 and allows farmers anywhere in the country to sell their own products and CSA shares online. The app enables digital sales to help regional producers and makes it easier to buy direct from local farmers! It is still only available in parts of the U.S, but I believe it is a great initative that hopefully will spread to other parts of the world as well. Day 730: July 9th, 2021. Super News! China has now distinguished 25% of its land as "ecological conservation" areas that will receive environmental protections. A decade ago, the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment was tasked with determining the most ecologically important areas, but it wasn't until recently that the lines were drawn around those protected areas. . While the protections of land aim to keep China's environmental systems in working order, the protected areas won't be without people, factories, and farms. It's unclear how these existing establishments will change under the new rules, but the central government has stated that new development within the areas will be limited. . . Read more about the news: https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/china-marks-25-its-territory-environmental-protection-2021-07-07/ . Graphic shows a square of land marked with a red outline. ElectriVillage in Mariestad Municipality together with multiple stakeholders just got a project approved to support business during Corona. To be able to deliver wares in a safe and sustainable way we have, among other things, tested and developed a packaging that secures the cooling chain. The tests involved partially finding a new innovative material, developed by Stora Enso, but also to secure the cooling chain for grocery transports. The Taxi service and the grocery chain Coop in Mariestad are now working with deliveries and the first order was tested about 2 weeks ago. Freelway is the company behind the digital transport coordination, as well as the unique temperature control required for uninterrupted cooling chains in the deliveries. The happy news is that this is still being used, and that Coop and Taxi Mariestad are collaborating to deliver in a more sustainable and efficient way. We at ElectriVillage Mariestad Municipality who work with these issues think it's great to take part in a project that can show the savings in transport and coordination to achieve sustainable and industrial innovation to reach our climate targets. The purpose of the project was initially also to create value and possibilities to send wares safely and sustainably during a pandemic, but it also fulfills the demands during regular circumstances, and therefore we are even happier to be able to use a service that coordinates and creates value regardless of society's circumstances. For us in Mariestad Municipality it also feels good to be able to contribute as a testing and demonstration site for something that can later be used in the companies' operations at a larger scale.

SVT (The Swedish public service TV company) was one of the first public broadcasting companies in the world to use digital technology to produce live events remotely. Like most other broadcast companies, SVT used to transport all production equipment and staff to the location of the event. This resulted in tons of co2 emissions from long-distance flights, hotels, OB trucks etc. Already in 2012, during the Olympics in London, SVT started experimenting with remote production. And in 2019 SVT produced the worlds’ second-largest winter sports event, the World Ski Championships, using ”at-home” production technology to create 600 hours of broadcast back at base, while retaining camera operators and studios at the locations. Good for the wallet. Good for the climate. The question now is: What will be the next big step in remote production? And when is SVT (and other broadcasting companies) gonna start measuring the carbon footprint of each production? https://youtu.be/3fhVRrvi8uY

The White House has removed the scientist responsible for the National Climate Assessment, the federal government’s premier contribution to climate knowledge and the foundation for regulations to combat global warming, in what critics interpreted as the latest sign that the Trump administration intends to use its remaining months in office to continue impeding climate science and policy. According to two people close to the administration, he is expected to be replaced by David Legates, a deputy assistant secretary at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who previously worked closely with climate change denial groups.

The “Perennial Wind Chaser” (Perennial) is a proposed fracked gas power plant located in Umatilla County near Hermiston, Oregon. The facility would include four turbines with a maximum capacity of 415 megawatts. The Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council (EFSC) approved the power plant in 2015, before before the serious climate change impacts of methane leaks from fracked-gas production were fully understood. Construction on the facility has been delayed, in part, because the company has not been able to find a purchaser for the power that would be generated by the facility. If built, this project would be responsible for 1 million tons of pollution per year, making it one of the top 5 largest polluters in Oregon. Until October 30 2020, 14 organisations have sent a letter to Governor Brown and the Oregon Dept. of Energy, demanding they: - Terminate Perennial’s permit - Launch an investigation into Perennial’s actions - Protect Oregon and our climate future. Let's send them a letter from We Don't Have Time as well!

Covid-19 may be the latest deadly disease originating from wildlife, but it’s not unprecedented. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, about 70% of all infectious diseases over the last 30 years have been zoonotic, including HIV/AIDS, avian influenza, swine flu, SARS, Ebola, MERS, and now Covid-19. At this rate, we are bound to see more zoonotic outbreaks within our lifetime, unless we change now. “Never Again” is ENV's second Public Service Announcement (PSA) addressing the connection between zoonotic diseases and wildlife consumption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBKjR7otwhA&feature=youtu.be

Dear United States of America! I hope I will never have to send this letter to my youngest son. The letter to my son: From those of us who knew what was happening but never changed - This letter is to be opened if you live to the age I was when you were born - You and I. Our birthdays are four days apart. When you read this in the year 2060, I’ll be 81. You’ll be 42. Maybe we’ll both still be alive? Maybe we’ve been trying to survive in a dying world where catastrophes have become the norm. This letter is dedicated to you, and I don’t know how to say this. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what else to say. Because even though I did everything I could, it wasn’t enough. Not enough to give you what we got. A world to stand on. Everyone thought it could be done later. But there was no later. Later is now. And now it’s you! It’s your turn, but there’s nothing left to stand on. No future generations that can pay. You have to pay. And the price. Yes, we already knew what the price was. The price was unthinkably high. A price that can never be paid. When you were born, I looked into your deep blue eyes. Your calm. Your peace and innocence. You entered the world without demands. You came to me full of life, and I stared at you in wonder. So frail. So new. So full of trust. I took you into my arms. Kept you warm. We gazed at each other. That was the strongest experience I’ve ever had. I caught a glimpse of the infinite. I gazed into eternity. Everyone who’d come before and everyone who’ll come after. I felt unconditional love. The divine. The eternal. Everything at once. Yes, I really did experience all that. When I held you in my arms. But you won’t be able to experience any of that. Your generation stopped. You stopped bringing new life into the world because you understood the unfathomable. The debt was too great. The debt was unpayable. No one could manage that burden. You didn’t want to pass the debt on to anyone else. Because you know it can never be paid. Perhaps you blame us for not doing this. Perhaps you blame us for pawning all those things that can’t be bought. Perhaps you blame us for not saving anything. Because everything has run out. No money in the world can buy what you need. It was the greatest gift we ever received. And we threw it away. Your grandmother understood. Because her time ran out too soon. It ran out when the cancer spread, before you were even born. It took her liver, spread through the blood. The brain. It was over soon. But she never lost hope. She used every minute right until her final moment. I still remember exactly how she held my hand when she drifted away, at peace in the knowledge that we will always be here. In the knowledge that you, my son, was going to be born and the fragile, the indestructible, would be passed on. But you’ll never be able to find this peace. Because no one will remember who you were. No one will safely hold your hand in your final moments. No one will hold a newborn in their arms. Because there will be no one left. Ever. Because amongst all the billions of stars, amongst all the thousands of planets we’ve discovered, we couldn’t find one like ours. There was no planet that still had time. Still had life. We never understood that we were the only ones. We never understood that eternity would die with us. Not just our species, but that once the world started to boil it was unstoppable. We didn’t know it was so bad. We thought things would be difficult for you. We even knew that billions of people would die. That most species would die out. But we still thought we’d make it. That we somehow were the lucky few. And that there was more time. That the temperatures would rise gradually. Not that the planet would start to boil when temperatures had just increased by a few degrees. We never listened to those who already knew. Because we were listening to someone else. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry that you had to see the coral reefs die. That the fish died out and that you now know that the seas will start to boil. I’m sorry that so many insects died out even while you were still a child. I’m sorry that all the birds then became silent. I’m so sorry we never stopped the destruction. I’m so sorry. ....... I wrote this letter during election night 2020. It shouldn’t be like this. We don’t know yet if the climate denier Donald Trump will regain the confidence of the American people to govern the USA. But we do know that the election was not about the climate because if it were, the world’s most powerful country would never have got this close to be the only one to leave the Paris agreement. At a time like this, it would be easy to give up. But if you really understand what the climate crisis is all about, that option doesn’t even exist. To give up would be treachery, not just against our own children but against all of humanity. I founded WeDontHaveTime.org and #WeDontHaveTime four years ago, after the election night in November 2016. We didn’t have time to wait then, and we have even less time to wait now. Many people have understood this. But unfortunately, more and more people are losing hope that change is possible. That’s not the case. There just needs to be more of us. Change is coming, but we don’t have time to wait. I urge all my followers, all companies, all organizations and all those who fight for the climate and our planet to stand up for our future and make the most important climate pledge of all: #NeverGiveIn Giving in is not an option. Never, ever. Period. The more of us that stand up for this, the more action we’ll see and the more hope we’ll feel. And the more of us we’ll become! We have all the solutions, more people need to become active, and then more and more will join us. Together we are the solution to the climate crisis.’I want to quote Winston Churchill’s famous speech from 29 October 1941, when things were at their darkest for the Allies. “Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” Help me to never have to send my letter. Fighting for our future is not a choice. It’s an obligation. Therefore — please repeat after me — I pledge #NeverGiveIn Because — If we don’t give in. How much plastic waste is in our oceans? A lot—so much so that it might just be the next big material for eco-friendly fashion! Just like these water-resistant, eco-friendly sneakers developed by Bernardo Pedroso that are made from ghost nets and plastic bottles collected by fishermen from the ocean! 🐠🌍🥾 ❤️Like this post to support innovators who invent new ways of cleaning the planet. Follow @sustainabilitychampions for more positive updates! Bernardo, son of one of Brazil’s first female surfers, loved the ocean from a very young age. He was astounded to see the scale of destruction happening brought about by plastic waste. So in 2019, he founded Ocean Refresh, a company that aims to get rid of plastic waste from our ocean. He developed a sneaker that shows just how versatile recycled ocean plastic can be. The fabric used to create the sneakers is crafted from a unique combination of plastic bottles and recycled ghost nets. Everything else used in the sneaker is 100% organic including the vegan woven polyester thread and air mesh lining made from recycled P.E.T and corn fibre, plus a sole made from recycled car tyres. On top of that, Bernardo developed a "360 Program" to ensure their sneakers don’t end up in landfills. Real estate improvements For many real estate owners, it comes a time when they need to maintain and improve their properties. For instance, they want the real estates to be more attractive and sustainable. It can be to gain a modern standard on their roof terraces, courtyards or in some other way update the existing areas. This is beneficial for the owners as they create a popular place to be in and may take an increased rent, and in the same time companies, co-workers and others will be attracted to a great workspace or a good social place. The reason behind this can be as clever and easy as people wanting their properties greener and more environmentally friendly. A lot of existing buildings have the potential to become greener and more sustainable. Just think outside the box. There might be boring terraces in office buildings or maybe there are a sad courtyards in the city. All the places mentioned above are spaces that can become green areas, which not only are much nicer, but also has a positive effect for the nature, for the insects, for the birds and the storm water management. People do feel better when they are surrounded by green areas. When changing a roof terrace to a green roof landscape, it makes people feel better and it gives them a space to come for breaks, for work and on other occasions. Todays roof landscapes are smart, and can be build in many ways, even divided into “rooms”. The only limits to a successful roof landscape is the limit of the human imagination. Nowadays real estate owners have combined the roof terraces for the co- workers to use and the general public, in the shape of roof bars etc. Urbangreen has built many different spaces to improve the real estates and the worth of the buildings. From the smallest space to the most mind-blowing green area. We think all matters and it is just the matter of having a good realistic plan that can be implemented. Since we have done projects like this before we have gained important knowledge of what works and what does not. This means we can assist real estate owners with everything from the creative process to the actual building process of roof landscapes, update terraces and courtyards to make them modern and environmentally advantageous. We are also assisting with the integration of solar panels on the roofs and of course building green roofs. One of our projects was Frösunda Port, Sweden. Here we built workplaces, social spaces and lunch areas on the roofs. The roofs consist of big planting vessels containing trees, bushes and other plants. Not only an attractive place for the tenants but a really good place for the biodiversity in the local area. Some amazing climate action is taking place on Åland at the moment. In an interview with We Don't Have Time, parliament member Simon Holmström talks about innovations, large-scale projects, and how this small archipelago in the Baltic Sea is pushing its far bigger Nordic neighbours to step up their climate ambitions. https://bit.ly/3kPxMWR

QA - Lets highlight some of the questions we have received from you! Green roofs, green landscapes, green facades etc are quite complex in their way, and sometimes need to be clarified. They are all good for a more sustainable planet, but one must understand how to rightly construct them to fit their unique purpose and how to take care of them. Here we go! Sedum- low angled roofs How well does a flat sedum roof handle excess rain/snow? Low angled roofs have a different construction than roofs with higher angles. The flatter roofs have a drainage layer that takes care of the excess water. This system does not dewater the roof fast but in a slower pace, and that is ok! Water not taken care of by the sedum or the waterproof layer will pass through the drainage layer into the downpipes. Regarding the snow, the drainage layer helps the excess water to reach the downpipes. If it is very much snow and the roofs need to be shovelled of snow, it is important not to go all the way down to the sedum. By going all the way through the snow to the sedum, it can damage the living plants. Therefore, it is better to leave ca. 10 cm snow, this will act like a isolating layer for the Sedum mats during the winter. Perennial mats VS Sedum mats Is there an easy way of telling the difference? A very interesting question! Perennials as the name says are plants that live many years. Sedum can be counted as a perennial. The difference is that in the category Sedum there are perennials that are said to be in the stonecrop family. This means that they can survive in extreme environments. In the Sedum mats there are many different types of species sedum. Perennial mats on the other hand need much more soil to survive and are normally produced one species in one mat. The question for us now is, can we make one mat with different types of perennials in it (not talking about sedum from the stonecrop family). Our new system Stormwater roofs. Can you buy it outside Sweden? As far as we know we don´t think so. But please contact Marcus - marcus.stahl@urbangreen.se to see how we can solve it.
