This week the Orka Food owned Felix sold food for a few days with prices based on climate impact and carbon dioxide as currency. To cut climate impact by half each costumer got a weekly budget of 18.9 equivalents to work with when shopping. The aim for the initiative is to raise awareness for the climate impact of different products we buy in our everyday life. Felix effort to be transparent and inform their buyers of products climate impact is inspiring and makes me wish we had climate impact visible for every product we buy. That would make it so much easer for consumers to make good climate decisions when grocery shopping! "Spain is set to present a new climate law that would ban all fossil fuel powered gas projects with immediate effect and will help cut national emissions to net zero by 2050." I think Spain is leading the way for effective legislation, hopefully this will be pulled through! (sorry if someone's already shared this) https://climatemusing.wordpress.com/2020/05/24/spain-drafts-new-climate-law-that-would-ban-all-fossil-fuel-projects-and-promote-renewable-energy/

Definitely a strong precedent for strong legislation, and a good step forward for Spain (even though their target year for net zero is far too late)! I agree in the hope that it will go through so that we can see more governments take this step!

What do you think about ICA’s new plans? 🌍 According to the press release, they have three main ways of achieving their goals: 1) “ICA shall achieve at least a zero net climate impact from own operations by 2030” 2) “ICA will cut the climate impact of customers’ grocery purchases in half by 2030. Inspire and support customers by making shifts in product range, reducing food waste and improving production methods for a lower environmental and climate impact.” 3) “ICA’s suppliers will adopt science-based climate targets by 2025” To me, the second strategy sounds a lot like ICA will start promoting greener diets over traditional meat based ones. What do you think? 🌱 Swedish press release: https://www.icagruppen.se/arkiv/pressmeddelandearkiv/2020/icas-nya-klimatambition-halvera-kundernas-klimatpaverkan-och-na-minst-netto-noll-till-ar-2030/ English version: https://mb.cision.com/Main/7955/3098080/1236994.pdf

I’m guessing target 1 will be achieved by ”climate compensation”, which many other grocery companies are already boasting of. It would be interesting to hear exactly HOW they are planning to achive it.

I just signed this petition to call on Siemens to break their contract with the monstrous Adani coal mine in Australia. Without Siemens, the mine will struggle to transport their coal. But if the project takes off, the indigenous people and the amazing life of the Great Barrier Reef will be at risk. The more signatures we get, the more pressure we will put on Siemens during their upcoming assembly of shareholders. You can sign here! https://act.350.org/sign/siemens-adani?akid=a21025915.4208144.3oe2v3&aktmid=tm4382516.9Fa5q7&rd=1&source=conf&t=5&utm_medium=email&utm_source=actionkit

According to Swedish newspaper Breakit is minPension working against the startup Seeqests and try to shut them down. Seeqests is an app that shows you exactly how your pension savings is alocated. If you own nuclear, fossils, gambling etc you will see that and could take action. minPension is a company that is jointly owned by the major Swedish insurance companies through Swedish insurance. The company is a joint venture from the state and the pension companies. The state appoints half the board and accounts for half of the funding. Agree to this warning if you think that minPension should reconsider and allow Seeqest to Access the information. Mvh, MinPension

Hi. I'm the CTO at Seeqest. We *really* appreciate your support of the app. I can say that more than one lawyer has advised us that we are not doing anything illegal. In fact, I was careful to design the interface so that we only use data if the user allows us to - and we keep hardly anything. As evidence of this we had a user who contacted us three weeks ago to ask what was wrong with her result, but there was no way we could identify her even if we wanted to. This is a wonderful idea spawned by Catharina Lehto - CEO of Seeqest. As some commenters have asked - yes, we will offer it in other countries, with Nordic countries and UK being likely candidates. One reason that this has started in Sweden is that we have minPension which has collected our pension data and made this possible - so kudos to them! It is not only we consumers that want to see change - the fund managers themselves need and want this information. This is just the first version, to raise awareness - and it is usually an unpleasant surprise. We are currently meeting investors for the next phase where we will help users to move their capital to more sustainable investments, expand to include more funds, and prepare for overseas launches. We developed this version in two months and launched it 1/11 so it has been surprising (and disappointing) how little interest there has been to publicly talk about the app, or indeed to want to invest in it. All that changed 2 weeks ago when Johanna was bold enough to write about us in Break-it. It has been quite a battle, so once again I'd like to thank you on behalf of our small team for the appreciation and encouragement you are showing us. Catharina and I will be lurking here from now on, and you are welcome to visit our site on facebook and ask any questions you may have.

This seems really strange. We need to collaborate and find complementary solutions instead of trying to shut down similar initiatives

For Hohn's remarkable way of not doing business as usual and pushing other companies using his fund is really brave. Because of the slow shifting on the market and within companies we need more people like Chris Hohn. "For Hohn, 53, a cerebral and deeply private financier who’s worth $2 billion, his campaign is just a first step in shaking up an asset management industry he says has ignored a planetary crisis. He’s calling on investors to fire money managers who don’t press companies to reduce their carbon footprint, and he wants banks to stop lending to companies that ignore climate change." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-22/the-world-s-most-profitable-hedge-fund-is-now-a-climate-radical?srnd=premium-europe

Goldman Sachs said that it plans to spend $750 billion over the next decade financing and advising companies focused on sustainable finance themes such as climate transition and inclusive growth. "There are large opportunities. There are large markets. When we see that, we see need, and we see opportunity," John Goldstein, who heads Goldman Sachs' sustainable finance group, said Thursday on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street." ESG investing — or strategies that take a company’s environmental, social and governance factors into consideration — now accounts for more than $30 trillion worldwide in assets under management. "There is so much ideological, almost philosophical, baggage that needs to get stripped away to get to the investing question ... Sometimes this field has too many adjectives, not enough nouns and verbs," Goldstein said. This is fantastic. Can GS be trusted to invest in a way that actually has positive impact and not just continue to protect the interests of a wealthy elite and maintain existing structures of global inequality which actually need to be challenged if there is to be climate justice?

Since Max have been so successful at making their menu in their restaurants CO2 positive nation wide through climate compensation we should appreciate this pioneer step. There's not many restaurants nor franchises that have come this far with achieving and setting up these ambitious goals for contributing to a sustainable society. I'd love to see them in many more countries as well! <3 Picture from Max own website.

Very interesting idea setting a climate budget for consumers! But why don't Orcla skip all their plastic containers, eg for ketchup!?

Yes i agree. This pop-up store is most likely part of a campaign they do. But I think the idea of giving consumers honest information about the climate impact of different products have great potential!
