Several Swedish companies from various industries – SPP, Houdini, Icebug, Polarbrödgruppen, Svea Solar, and Rejlers – are now backing the Ecocide Law Alliance initiative to criminalize large-scale environmental destruction – ecocide – within the framework of the Rome Statute, the statute of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, ICC. The companies are thus increasing pressure on the Swedish government to work towards an international law against serious environmental crimes. The initiative is backed by Exponential Roadmap Initiative and We Don’t Have Time. On February 27, the CEOs of these companies published a joint call to action on the Swedish media platform Aktuell Hållbarhet (article in Swedish), stating: “55% of the world's GDP depends on nature's services. Despite this, we are increasingly witnessing how our ecosystems are disrupted and destroyed through reckless exploitation of nature. It is high time to make serious environmental crimes punishable under international law. Responsible decision-makers globally must understand that reckless actions against nature can also have serious consequences in the form of imprisonment or hefty fines. We demand that the Swedish government push for ecocide rules to become global and be included in the Rome Statute. And we urge more Swedish companies to join the Ecocide Law Alliance initiative. Let us come together to establish a strong international law that prevents the worst forms of destruction of our living ecosystems!” On the same day as the co-signed op-ed was published, the European Parliament voted yes on approving the agreement with EU member states on the updated environmental crime directive, which expands the list of serious environmental crimes within the EU and introduces new sanctions against those committing the most serious environmental crimes - ecocide. ”It's great that the EU is moving forward on this issue and tightening regulations and sanctions, but it's not enough. The reason is simple: the EU has 27 member states, on one continent. The International Criminal Court has 123 member states, on all continents of the world. Crimes against the environment should be on par with crimes against humanity”, say the CEOs of the companies now supporting the initiative. The Ecocide Law Alliance argues that despite many conventions, guidelines, and laws in the environmental field, an important piece of the puzzle is still missing: international criminal law, so that decision-makers worldwide can be held accountable for the most egregious crimes. This is also one of the recommendations from the high-level working group on the environmental consequences of the war in Ukraine. Since the legal framework and procedures for amendments to the Rome Statute already exist, it is relatively easy and practically feasible to get the law in place. "Because there is a gap in the law, a small number of highly destructive activities continue to harm the living systems that everyone depends on. An international law against such activities would help protect healthy and vibrant nature, human health and human rights, and limit climate change. At the same time, it strengthens the competitiveness of Swedish companies," adds Johanna Lundgren Gestlöf, Sustainability Manager at SPP, in a press release on the call to action, and continues: “A law that criminalizes the most serious destruction of the Earth's living ecosystems would reduce the possibility of doing business at the expense of nature while paving the way for companies with truly sustainable solutions, and Sweden is at the forefront in this regard.” There are several advantages with a law against ecocide: • The law starts at the right end to address key issues, as it is over-arching, addresses the most serious damage, and also intervenes at the beginning of the value chain. • It creates a new decision-making situation and risk analysis for individuals responsible for activities that potentially cause significant harm to vital ecosystems. • The law contributes to fair competition, both in Sweden and globally. • The law creates increased pressure for transition, which in turn contributes to a higher rate of innovation. "A criminal law is a powerful steering tool, not least because it also affects our values: what is criminal, we also see as morally wrong. Introducing international law against large-scale environmental destruction is a big step in the right direction. The purpose of the law is primarily preventive: to encourage carefully considered decisions before engaging in activities that could be highly environmentally damaging. We urge the Swedish government to support in every way possible the establishment of a global ecocide law," conclude the undersigned CEOs. Here are the business leaders and initiatives behind the call to action: Jenny Rundbladh, CEO, SPP (occupational pension provider) Karin Bodin, CEO, Polarbrödsgruppen (food manufacturer) Eva Karlsson, CEO, Houdini Sportswear David Ekelund, CEO, Icebug (footwear) Jenny Edfast, CEO, Rejlers Sweden (technical consultants) Erik Martinson, CEO, Svea Solar (solar company) Johan Falk, CEO and co-founder, Exponential Roadmap Initiative Ingmar Rentzhog, CEO and founder, We Don’t Have Time Nina Macpherson, Chairperson, Ecocide Law Alliance ABOUT INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES In today’s legislation, the International Criminal Court in The Hague can prosecute for four crimes under the Rome Statute: crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, and aggression crimes (crimes against peace). The proposal is to add large-scale environmental destruction, ecocide, as a fifth crime. The definition of the proposed crime by a panel of experts in international criminal law is: "illegal or reckless acts committed with the knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of serious and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment caused by those acts." ABOUT THE ECOCIDE LAW ALLIANCE The Ecocide Law Alliance foundation brings together companies that support this legislation, provides information on what the law would entail, and how as a business owner one can advocate for it. Storebrand Asset Management has become an inaugural Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Early Adopter. This means that Storebrand will start making disclosures aligned with the TNFD Recommendations in its corporate reporting by financial year 2024. - Biodiversity loss was a breakthrough topic last year in within our sector, after what has been a long battle for many of us advocating for the issue. But now, this issue is increasingly being understood to rank alongside climate change — and to be intrinsically linked to solving it -as areas of significant systemic risk for investors, says Jan Erik Saugestad, CEO Storebrand Asset Management and adds; - We have already started to implement the TNFD methodology in our portfolios to better understand our nature-related risks and opportunities and are committed to publish our first TNFD disclosures from 2025, based on 2024 data. Four organizations initially partnered to create the TNFD: Global Canopy, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Since September 2020, 74 members, including Storebrand, formed an Informal Working Group (IWG) in order to prepare the launch of the TNFD. https://www.mynewsdesk.com/storebrand-asa/news/progress-on-nature-disclosures-are-a-critical-step-forward-towards-solving-biodiversity-loss-and-climate-challenge-477878

The Swedish insurance company SPP uses an internal sustainability analysis as a key parameter for including new funds in the selection presented to their customers. They also take great care to help customers choose the most sustainable funds to include in their portfolio. SPP is one of the top insurance companies in our 2023 report “Sustainable unit-linked insurances”. Every year, Söderberg & Partners evaluate Sweden’s 13 biggest providers of unit-linked insurance — insurance that allows long-time investment of your occupational pension, with a range of different funds to choose from — to determine how well they integrate sustainability into their offerings. The companies are given a green, yellow, red, or grey score, where green is the best and red is the worst. A grey score means that the company’s model differs too much from the other companies in the analysis, meaning that it can’t be evaluated in all four criteria and therefore get a grey total score. This year, we had 4 companies reach a green score when considering all criteria (up from 3 in 2022). Our analysis to determine the top companies offering unit-linked insurance looks at four areas: Sustainability in the selection of funds, engagement work, communication and transparency, and supply of funds. At SPP, fund managers are expected to have a goal of climate-neutral investing by 2050, and to take steps towards meeting that goal already today, or face consequences for their unwillingness to be more sustainable. SPP is also in active dialogue with their fund managers to ensure that they understand the importance of phasing out investments in fossil fuels and deforestation. In terms of fund selection, SPP provides plenty of information to its customers. For example, they display the sustainability score of their funds, based on the sustainability score of the individual companies included in each fund. They also provide a wide range of funds that get a green score in our sustainability analysis. Overall, SPP does a lot to make it easy for their customers to find good and sustainable funds where they can invest their pension money, and for that, they have received a green score in our analysis. Johanna Lundgren Gestlöf, you are head of sustainability at SPP, which runs the Storebrand Group’s pension operations in Sweden. Can you tell us what a day as a sustainability manager can look like? ”It's very varied, which is what's fun. I'm out talking about sustainability, participating in panels and webinars, or presenting our sustainability work in customer meetings or to our own employees at least once a week. This of course also requires that I spend some time ensuring that we have good presentation material and that I have read up on current issues, by following the news, reading reports, or listening to other people's presentations. An average day consists of around 50 percent of meetings, some days in the office, and some days via Teams from home. We talk about how to develop SPP / Storebrand's sustainability offering, increase the sustainability of our products and make it easier for our customers to understand what sustainability means. We also talk about how to implement the new EU requirements linked to sustainability, which also means some writing, reading and reporting.” You have now had this position for two years. What did you do before you began working in the Storebrand Group? ”After I finished my master's degree in economics at the Stockholm School of Economics, I worked as a management consultant for 3,5 years, i.e. helping companies in various types of strategy processes. I have also worked with politics at both municipal and national levels in various ways for many years.” How was your great interest in sustainability aroused? ”My interest in sustainability as well as in community involvement is something I bring with me from home. Both my mom and dad have always had a great interest in being involved and influencing society. Dad ran his own business, installing solar panels and heat pumps, and mom has worked with politics most of my life. We recycled everything that could be recycled, had our own compost and only bought organic or locally produced groceries. Climate and gender issues were what first made me want to get politically involved, but now that I’ve chosen to work in the business sector, sustainable finance is a perfect combination between politics and the business strategy work I used to do as a consultant.” Storebrand has worked with sustainability since 1995. How would you describe the role of sustainable asset management today? ”It is becoming increasingly important, and is more often taking centre stage. Just look at everything that’s happening in sustainable finance right now, for example with the EU's legislative package. One of the major changes that have taken place is the understanding of the sustainability-related risks that companies must take into account. In the past, sustainability investing was very much about excluding certain unethical industries that large institutional clients did not want to profit from, but it was not closely linked to potential returns. Today, many have come to realize that it can be costly not to be aware of sustainability aspects of an investment. And for those that have not yet realized this, the EU's legal requirements will force them to take it into account. The global goals and the Paris Agreement have also become a framework for finding business opportunities within sustainability, and focus has shifted from just opting out of the unsustainable to also choosing investments in companies that do good for the world – both because more capital is needed for these companies, and because they are well-positioned in regard to societal development.” A lot is happening right now in terms of regulations and requirements for sustainability reporting. From your perspective, what is the major benefit of this development, from a customer perspective? ”That there will be more transparency, and that managers will really need to clarify and define their processes. It will still take a great deal of effort to get a good overview, because of the extremely extensive documentation requirements. But hopefully this will enable authorities, the media and external auditors to identify companies and products that do not live up to their promises.” Of all the big issues surrounding us, such as biodiversity, social sustainability, and reaching a net-zero climate footprint, which do you see as the tougher challenges, where we have not come as far as we’d hope. And what do you believe is the reason for this? ”Biodiversity is an area that has long gotten much less attention than the climate issue. This is largely because the climate is easier to quantify through carbon footprints. But how do we measure and value nature? However, we now see an increased focus on nature and biodiversity, and Storebrand is represented in the new Task Force for Nature Related Disclosures, which aims to develop a framework for reporting related to nature. Like with nature, social issues are more difficult to quantify and follow up. But with the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine, there has also been more focus on this as well. Here, transparency in the supply chain is a major problem. Here, too, much is happening to improve it, especially in the EU, where new legal requirements will be made for due diligence for human rights at the supplier level. However, this only applies to large companies, which means much information will continue to be lacking. We can also see that the link between climate change and social issues needs more attention. We need to ensure that the production of renewable energy sources does not take place at the expense of human suffering in mines or occupied territories worldwide. The green transition needs to go hand in hand with human inclusion, since, for example, jobs in the coal industry will disappear.” As financiers, we have a great deal of influence. How do you think we could make the most use of this? What is the most important task? ”I would say that our combined efforts are what matters most, precisely because it has an impact on society and points out the direction in which capital will move in the future. By excluding companies, you partly reduce the risk in the investments, but it also sends a signal about what you as a company should not be doing if looking to attract capital. Selecting more "sustainable" companies, provides more capital to industries and companies that need to grow, but it also shows which new types of companies it might be wise to create. And by influencing the companies we own, we can in a very concrete way help push the sustainability work of these companies forward. Also, the work we do to raise sustainability towards the customer is a type of advocacy work, which further strengthens the trends I have just mentioned. If the transition is to happen fast enough, capital, politics, customer demand and companies need to work in the same direction.” In addition to the financial market and the commitment of the individual, what political work or political decision would be a catalyst for a faster change towards a sustainable world? ”The most important part is to price carbon dioxide emissions in a better way, and really make it more expensive to emit greenhouse gases. I see it as unlikely that we will get a global carbon tax, but the EU's work to include more sectors in the Emission Trading System and introduce a border adjustment mechanism are important steps along the way. In Sweden, I think much comes down to shortening permit processes and implementing concrete incentives, such as green taxation, to speed up the transition. For social sustainability, the steps now being taken with increased demands on due diligence processes for the large companies' supply chain are good.” There is currently a lot of turbulence in the world around us; the war in Ukraine, high inflation, interest rate hikes, and the pandemic that has been affecting the world for the past two years. Do you believe the sustainability engagement has generally increased or decreased during these troubled times? ”During the corona pandemic, we saw that interest in sustainable investing increased. The shaky stock markets we have seen during this year have led to a reduced inflow into sustainable savings products, but there has been an even greater drop in unsustainable products, so it does not seem to be due to a reduced interest in sustainability. I believe that the commitment to social sustainability and human rights, and human humanity, has been strengthened. At the same time, there has been less room to talk about climate, and the Greta Thunberg effect is not as evident as before. But in general, the younger generation is socially conscious, and that has not changed during all that has happened.” What are the most common questions about sustainability you get from companies that are going to invest sustainably? ”More and more people want to be able to measure the sustainability of their investments, and be able to show how their ratings have improved. Because sustainability is so complex, it is a difficult task to solve, but we are putting more and more effort into trying to visualize different aspects of sustainability in saving, such as the climate footprint or the proportion of fossil-free investments in a portfolio.” Most people have realized that change is needed to make the world a more sustainable place. But what resistance can you encounter, if there still is? And if so, what is the most common mistrust of sustainable asset management? ”It is becoming rarer and rarer among customers to believe that you have to give up on returns in order to invest sustainably, even though there are still those who believe so. On the other hand, there are, with some justification, some who question what is labeled as truly really sustainable and not. Is a new electric car really better than an old petrol car? Not so long ago, everyone was encouraged to use ethanol to fuel their cars, when today it is not classified as sustainable. And how do you know that the production of components for solar cells or batteries does not violate human rights or harm the surrounding environment? This uncertainty is definitely an obstacle to more sustainable investment, but hopefully the taxonomy and more comparable information through the Disclosure Regulation will contribute to clarifications. But one must have respect for the fact that sustainability is a complex issue, and that different parts are connected in ways that sometimes lead in opposite directions. As a customer, you must therefore decide what aspect is more important for you. As asset managers, it is important that we understand how different aspects are connected and that we continue to develop our expertise in different areas so that we can push for development in the right direction.” I usually conclude by asking about the future, what trends you see coming. This time I will instead ask: What do you think will be the most difficult – but the most important – thing that must change for a sustainable transition to happen? ”It needs to become significantly more costly to be unsustainable, and more rewarding to be sustainable, for companies as well as for individuals. At the same time, this needs to be handled in a way so that people's confidence in politics is not reduced, and so that people do not oppose the transition because it makes living more expensive. This is, of course, a huge challenge. But the positive thing is that we now see that all parts of society are increasingly moving in the same direction. That's why I'm still optimistic.” ABOUT - SPP is a We Don’t Have Time partner, and Open for Climate Dialogue. - SPP actively encourages your feedback on their climate efforts by planting a tree for every Climate Review they receive. Cumulative deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon hit its highest level since 2006 last year. According to official data from INPE (the Brazilian space research agency), forest destruction rose 22% from the previous year. More than 13 thousand square kilometres of forest were lost in the Amazon just between August 2020 and July 2021. On the background of such grim numbers and following a thorough analysis of their investments in Brazil, Storebrand Asset Management announced this week that they would be putting two companies, Bunge Ltd (Bunge) and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), on their observation list. “Deforestation creates financial risk for companies and their shareholders, and Storebrand Asset Management has committed to deforestation-free portfolios by 2025,” comments Jan Erik Saugestad, Storebrand AM’s CEO on the decision. “Bunge and ADM are among the companies with the highest deforestation risk in our portfolio,” he adds. “In our perspective the progress is too slow and we also believe that the ambitions are too low,” ADM and Bunge are among the world’s largest traders moving Brazilian soyabeans around the world. The increase in production of the commodity, largely used for livestock feed, has been a leading cause of deforestation of the Amazon rainforest as well as the destruction of Cerrado savannah. “We would like to see more traceability and transparency of monitoring of their supply chain across their commodities,” said Saugestad. The demands also include commitment not to source from lands deforested after January 1, 2020, whether legally or illegally. We're pleased to be able to contribute to the #PRI's new collaborative initiative on human rights for investors. Storebrand Asset Management's Head of Human Rights Tulia Machado-Helland will serve on the advisory committee, working to address human rights and social issues through stewardship. "I am honored to be part of the advisory committee to the PRI's collaborative stewardship on social issues. The time is way overdue for a collaborative initiative like this on human rights, a topic that has been overlooked by many investors for far too long. The pandemic has made human rights issues even more pressing, which is why mobilizing investors on a global level is extremely important to make progress." https://www.unpri.org/investment-tools/stewardship/collaborative-stewardship-initiative-on-social-issues-and-human-rights

I dag väntas EU:s första delegerade akter kring taxonomin slutligen röstas igenom.
https://www.aktuellhallbarhet.se/strategi/taxonomi/nya-akter-om-karnkraft-och-fossilgas-undergraver-fortroendet-for-taxonomin/

https://theinvestoragenda.org/focus-areas/policy-advocacy-2021-gis/
Leading financial institutions commit to actively tackle deforestation - Race to Zero & Race to Resilience
More than 30 leading financial institutions, collectively with over US$ 8.7 trillion in assets under management have committed to tackle agricultural commodity-driven deforestation as part of broader efforts to drive the global shift towards sustainable production and nature-based solutions.
https://racetozero.unfccc.int/leading-financial-institutions-commit-to-actively-tackle-deforestation/
Today Emine Isciel Isciel Head of Climate and Environment at Storebrand Asset Management is attending World Leaders Summit, the high-level segment for Head of State and Government in Glasgow. "For the summit to be effective, the investment industry needs to play its part. Together with 30 leading financial institutions, representing more than US$ 8.7 trn AUM, we are sending a strong signal on deforestation by jointly committing to eliminate agricultural commodity-driven deforestation from our portfolios by 2025. We welcome the commitment announced late last night that Biden, Bolsonaro, Xi and many other leaders have agreed to put an end to deforestation. The need to act on deforestation is urgent. Halting deforestation can make a dramatic contribution to mitigating and adapting to climate change while helping to achieve biodiversity targets. Deforestation is not only a risk to climate and biodiversity but pose financial risks to our portfolios. A large number of economic sectors are exposed to increasing physical and regulatory risks associated with deforestation. Despite the growth in awareness of many climate-related issues, financial institutions are some ways behind when it comes to action on deforestation. That is why this industry-wide commitment is so crucial. The climate case for such a shift is self-evident: there is no pathway to honoring the 1.5C commitment in the Paris agreement which does not involve the urgent protection and restoration of the world’s remaining tropical forests. Only by working together can we bring about the scale of change needed. This is a great first step, now we need even more financial institutions to commit and turn the pledge into concrete actions." , comments Emine Isciel from Glasgow. More on the commitment: https://racetozero.unfccc.int/leading-financial-institutions-commit-to-actively-tackle-deforestation/

Agree. Subsidies for deforestation are 20-50 times greater than funding for conservation. This ratio must be reversed, and natural forest legally protected.
