After Brazil's destructive Bolsonaro administration, the world looked forward to new leadership that promised to protect the Amazon. But now, one year into the new president's term, the state of Brazil's ecosystems is more of a mixed bag rather than a flyaway success. . 🌎 The Good: Deforestation of the Amazon in decline Brazil's new president, Lula da Silva, is well on his way to ending deforestation in the Amazon. After just one year, the rate of deforestation has slowed by roughly 50%, a deforestation rate not seen since 2018! And in indigenous territories, that number was even higher at 73%! . 🌎 The Bad: Other areas can't be overlooked Of course, protections for trees today are important, but the big picture can't be ignored. A paved highway may soon make its way through the western Amazon - a small threat to the trees there now, but a major threat in the long term. Backed by construction and agriculture lobbies, experts worry that the highway could pave the way (literally) for illegal logging, mining, and habitat degradation. Even to the south of the Amazon, agriculture operations in the Cerrado devastated the area at its worst rate since 2016. . 🌎 The Verdict: Progress with a side of greenwashing Slowing the rate of deforestation is necessary, but it can't happen at the expense of another environment. The global stage is currently focused on deforestation, but conservation is much more complicated than simply "trees". Even for the Amazon rainforest, no ecosystem can thrive on its own - each has a part to play in the natural world. . . Urbanism is a dream for many activists. Being able to walk, bike, and take public transit to your errands would cut down on emissions as well as the ecological footprint of our cities and suburbs. Some issues are only exacerbated in urban areas, but if the goal was to create as large of a wildlife reserve as possible, how big could it be? . Fact: If the world's population lived as densely as New York City, the megacity would be about the size of Texas (the overflow could fit in the Oklahoma panhandle). Texas is huge, but condensing humanity into one state would practically turn every continent into a national park (minus the area of Texas for whichever continent would be our home). Of course, this is an idealistic look at global population (it wouldn't account for food supply, resource collection, urban heat islands, and a laundry list of other factors) - but the message is clear: down with suburban sprawl. . 🌎 OTHER THINGS: We're kicking the year off on a good note! We just sent out the New Year <little-bytes> newsletter, so be sure to check your inbox. These winter months have been a little quiet, but not in regards to project progress. Yes, we're still working on Wasted Space; yes, we're hoping to have the beta done by Earth Day; and YES there are beta tester spots open (if you're interested, just give us a shout)! After running into overtime negotiations, COP28 has finally come to a close. The nearly 200 countries in attendance agreed to a new climate deal, but that's not all we got out of the final days of the conference. . 🌎 To start on the brighter side: funding to fight the climate crisis only grew as the week went on. The new Loss and Damage fund almost doubled to over $700 million, $3 billion was added to the Green Climate Fund, and the UAE pledged to create a $30 billion climate finance fund. . 🌎 Methane cuts were also the talk of the town, especially in the earlier days of the conference. Methane is usually synonymous with agriculture, but new U.S. regulations will actually target oil and gas. The EPA announced that with these new regulations, oil and gas methane emissions will be cut by almost 80% industry-wide by 2038. . 🌎 Negotiations on climate deal verbiage are what drove the conference into overtime (in case you missed it, Google "leaked OPEC letter COP28"). The final wording may be historic, but some are still upset with it. Despite calls to "phase out" fossil fuels, the best we got was "transition away". It may seem insignificant, but the less concrete verbiage is feared to allow for loopholes in investments, carbon credits, carbon removal, and other technologies. . . The commitment of nearly 200 countries signifies progress in the global fight against climate change, marking a significant outcome from the conference's final days.
Been following COP28? The climate change conference where thousands of world leaders tackle one of the biggest issues of our time? COP28 runs for a few days yet, but it has already had its fair share of highlights: . 🌎 The biggest news: COP28 president, Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber (who is also head of the UAE's renewable energy company, Masdar, and the chief executive of the UAE's oil company, Adnoc) made headlines when he stated that there was 'no science' behind the need to phase out fossil fuels. He went on to say that the phase out is inevitable but phasing them out won't limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Unsurprisingly, UN leadership and other experts have clashed with the statements, saying they tread close to climate denial. (In our opinion, the quote is taken a bit out of context from the full debate, but still, it's a message that doesn't align with global climate goals and is especially alarming coming from a COP president). . 🌎 In slightly better news: An initial $420 million has been pledged for the Loss and Damage Fund, a fund meant to assist communities in developing countries suffering from the worst of climate change. Last year, disagreements on funding sources and amounts kept its creation stalled, but now large pledges by the EU and the UAE have at least pushed it into existence. . 🌎 On the bright side: 63 countries (including the US!) pledged to cut cooling-related emissions by 68% (compared to 2022 levels) by 2050. Because in a warming world, all we need is more electricity from fossil-fuel sources being used to cool our homes, further fueling the crisis. . . We took information from a variety of sources to create this post. See all of our sources on https://pixelplanettoday.com/links . Graphic shows the COP28 logo. The animal kingdom is full of parasites that latch onto hosts, only to steal nutrients, shelter, or something else. Parasitic behavior can make anyone squirm, but don't panic: horsehair worms only pose a threat to insects (those poor, poor insects). . Fact: Like other parasites, some species of horsehair worms grow inside an insect host until they reach adulthood. But what sets these species apart is when it's ready to 'hatch', it doesn't just burrow its way out of the unfortunate host, it attaches itself to the host's nervous system. These species can change the behavior of the insect, an ability that helps the worm get closer to its regular marine habitat. The worm forces the host seek water and ultimately drown itself. From there, the worm burrows out of the carcass and goes on its merry way. . 🌎 OTHER THINGS: On a much lighter note (😂), we sent out our October quarterly-newsletter yesterday! Be sure to search your inbox for an email from Terrabyte, and add us as a trusted sender if you are having troubles finding it. Nature never ceases to amaze with its strange but fascinating tales. Horsehair worms might make you squirm, but they're unique in their parasitic strategy, targeting insects. These crafty creatures manipulate their hosts, forcing them to seek water and meet their watery fate. We spent all of last week attending Climate Week NYC - a showcase of events featuring climate talks, panels, interactive exhibitions, and so much more. As climate nerds, we were in the best of company, and we learned a lot, too. Because of pesky caption limits, we have to keep it short, but let us know if you'd be interested and we'll make a full blog post about it too. 😊 🌎 In order to meet climate targets, many have looked to electric vehicles. Electric cars get a lot of the attention, but micromobility options (think e-bikes and scooters) are booming. Though they're not meant for long trips, these options also take on other issues like traffic congestion, equitable transit, and parking footprints. Plus, they take way less resources to produce! Win-win-win-win. 🌎 Cities are where most of us live, so it's no surprise that they are also some of the biggest sources of carbon emissions. However, more than 700 large cities around the world have committed to halving their emissions by 2030 (California and New York states have legal implications if they don't). 🌎 Climate solutions have a hard time getting anywhere without funding. It's hypocritical for climate-centered companies to take money from big oil - but in reality, it's how a lot of investment funds have come to be. An estimated 25% of climate funds come from oil and gas, either directly or indirectly, and whether founders know it or not. It's a classic rock-and-a-hard-place conundrum, and a great example of why transparency is everything. This content was sourced from various in-person climate talks at Climate Week NYC. Super news! Currently, there are more Atlantic salmon in American rivers than at any other time in the last decade! And by looking at the trends, it's not a fluke. Decades of dam construction, overfishing, and pollution had greatly slashed salmon numbers. But in the Penobscot River in Maine, four of the last five years have seen salmon numbers reach over 1,000; the years before never saw more than 850. . But in the grand scheme of things, that number still has a ways to go before things can be considered "fine". Before intense damming of East Coast rivers, salmon runs were in the tens of thousands. The fish fall under the protection of the Endangered Species Act, and with the reported uptick in numbers, conservationists are hopeful for increased measures (since something is definitely working). . . I initially set out to make a small blog post about my experience with Plastic Free July this year, but it quickly became a full-fledged in-depth study of how going plastic-free is (in some ways) harder than it was before the pandemic. The reliance on plastic was warranted as we tried to stop the spread of Covid-19, but can we go back to reducing, reusing, and recycling? Has the growing (recovering?) distrust in scientists and other experts changed public stances on environmental issues? Most environmentalists don't think of themselves as sociologists - but in many ways, the two are very connected. . 🌎 OTHER THINGS: One of the other things we have been working on is expanding the offerings on the Pixel Planet Today webstore. Plastic reliance is one reason why we can't get rid of it
Global temperatures may be rising, but even more heat has been absorbed by our oceans. Dark blue oceans absorb immense amounts of heat which normally disperses with currents and into the depths. However, thanks to extreme heat and lack of wind and rain (climate change, perhaps?!), ocean temperatures rose to a staggering 101 degrees Fahrenheit in Florida's Manatee Bay this week! Ocean surface temperatures that high haven't been recorded anywhere else in the world. . The temperature is astounding, but it might not (technically) be a world record. The previous hottest ocean temperature was recorded in Kuwait Bay, but because Manatee Bay is shallower and has more sediment (making it even easier to absorb heat), it's unclear if it will become an official record. . But even if it doesn't get the crown - we shouldn't have to tell you that temperatures like that are WAY TOO HIGH. High temperatures over the past several weeks have been brutal for area reefs, with one going from completely healthy to bleached within 2 weeks (80% of which is estimated to be dead)! Reefs sitting in deeper water offer a glimmer of hope, but ecologists are incredibly worried for those in warmer waters. . . We also made some Giphy stickers, so be sure to search "Plastic Free Pixel" or "@pixelplanettoday" wherever you enjoy Giphy content! Alright, on with the post. ❤️🌎 . It's an understatement to say that plastic is everywhere. Almost everything you get at a supermarket is either packaged in or made from some kind of plastic. This makes Plastic Free July all the more challenging, but at the same time, necessary. Plastic bags have long been in the crosshairs of environmentalists; however, their usage keeps climbing. Despite plastic bag bans around the world, an estimated 10 billion plastic bags are used every week! Some get recycled, but countless go to landfills, blow in the wind, or find their way to our oceans. . It may not be possible to cut these 10 billion bags out of the global economy by yourself, but change doesn't appear from thin air either. Plastic Free July has impacted millions of people from around the globe, all thanks to actions as small as swapping to a reusable bag. Yesterday was #WorldRainforestDay, and while we covered the biodiversity of rainforests in our last post, that biodiversity spreads much further than hotspots like the Amazon and Madagascar. Rainforests all over the globe harbor their own endemic species, and that includes the sliver of rainforests along the Australian coast. . Fact: Almost 80 percent of flowering plants found in Australian rainforests can't be found anywhere else in the world. One of which, Idiospermum Australiense (commonly known as ribbonwood or idiot fruit), was the first flowering plant roughly 120 million years ago! The big day comes June 22nd (The World Rainforest Day Summit is June 21st & 22nd, registration is free 😁), so to highlight the upcoming day, let's talk about these rainforests! . Astoundingly, rainforests cover only 2% of Earth's surface, yet they’re home to an astounding 50% of the planet's biodiversity! The Amazon Basin alone is a sanctuary to over 116,000 species. Besides the animals and critters that call these ecosystems home, rainforest biodiversity is the source of many things we use daily, like coffee and medicine. . However, these ecosystems and their inhabitants are at risk. Since 1970, we’ve lost a staggering 69% of vertebrate species worldwide. This is an irreversible loss, but there is still time to safeguard what remains. Together, we can ensure these ecosystems and those that call it home can thrive for centuries to come. . . Government can sometimes be slow to act. Politics muddy the waters, meaning crises like climate change are often seen as problems for another day. Actions made by the EPA are no different - but recently, its attempts to limit emissions are bigger than ever. . Last month, the EPA created standards for cars and trucks that could eliminate 9 billion tons of carbon emissions by 2050. And just last week, the EPA made rules stating that if large power plants can't cut their emissions by 90% by 2050, they will be shut down. The measure would cut 600 million tons of carbon emissions in 40 years: practically double of the UK's annual emissions. With all of these changes (and more), in just a few short months, the EPA has made rules that could prevent almost half of the entire world's annual fossil fuel emissions! . The biggest thing to keep in mind: these decisions could still be overruled. Last year, many EPA crackdowns were overturned by the Supreme Court, severely limiting the agency's ability to curtail emissions. Something similar could happen this time around, and it widely depends on what comes from upcoming elections and public support of the measures. . . We have to cut right to the chase with this one: Hemp has huge potential as a sustainable material, its only limit is the current supply chain and preconceived notions about the plant. . Anything from shirts to bioplastics can be made from hemp, and that includes sustainable building materials. Hemp can be formed into blocks or even poured as 'hempcrete'. And its use in construction isn't just a possibility: it's already happening. In larger buildings (like the currently underway 84 Harrington in Cape Town), a traditional frame is still needed to hold the building's weight, but hemp can be used to construct walls, ceilings, paneling, and more. Hemp blocks can sequester around 13 pounds of carbon each, so in some contexts, the building can actually go carbon negative. The biggest benefit to hemp construction may be its carbon capabilities, but it doesn't stop there. Construction can be completed more quickly with easy-to-setup blocks, less insulation can be used with the semi-porous material, all while being resistant to fire and mold. . However, the currently limited supply chain and widely negative view on hemp keep the green building material from its potential. Though consumers and contractors are increasingly understanding more about hemp, legal issues in certain regions also hinder growing/processing/shipping. The negative feedback loop only continues as limited supply means higher prices in available areas (between 30 and 40% more than traditional building materials), pushing out higher adoption in sustainable construction projects. . . Read more on hemp: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/21/business/hemp-construction-buildings.html . Graphic shows rows of hemp blocks. Logjams might not be helpful in most contexts - but when it comes to storing carbon, they help more than you might think. . The Mackenzie River Delta logjam, the largest logjam in the world, covers nearly 20 square miles of Canadian wilderness. The logjam is also so old that logs have been dated anywhere between 1955 and 690 CE! The amount of carbon found in places like this is still poorly understood, but new studies are attempting to identify just how much wood makes up megajams like these (not a real word, probably). Experts recently put the Mackenzie River's logjam at an estimated 3.4 million tons of carbon; to put that in perspective - that's the equivalent to the annual carbon emissions from 2.5 million cars! But what's even more crazy: that's only from the logs on the surface, it doesn't account for all of the wood underwater. . There's no doubt that it's a lot of carbon, but it's nothing compared to the natural ecosystem of the river delta. The carbon-rich soil of the delta stores an additional 34 billion metric tons of carbon! So even though the logjam is doing its part to hold in carbon, it still makes more sense to keep the trees upright as we take on the climate crisis. . . Read more about the logjam: https://www.sciencealert.com/earths-largest-logjam-holds-3-4-million-tons-of-carbon-study-finds . Graphic shows a logjam on a mountain river. Amazon recently announced two big changes coming to its online shopping platform: marking 'frequently returned' items and adding fees to certain returns. Cue environmental pros-and-cons list. . 🌎 The Good: Limiting waste: The biggest benefit to both decisions is limiting Amazon's waste. Handling returns is expensive and carbon-intensive, so by preventing people from purchasing bad products in the first place (or by placing a fee on said return), the company is hoping to limit them. . 🌎 The Bad: RIP free returns?: Offering free services is one of the biggest reasons why Amazon is the king of online retail. So, to flip its stance and tell customers they now may be subject to additional return fees at UPS stores - it's a big move (and to consumers, an aggravating one). Competitors have copied Amazon's free return model - so what's stopping customers from jumping ship and going to another retailer? . 🌎 The Verdict: Waste-free doesn't equal free: We have a lot of issues with capitalism, but our biggest is with its lack of concern for the environment. With Amazon, its more expensive to deal with returns properly than to simply dispose of them. However, this change is set to bring a bit more balance to the return process. Super News! Through the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Project, $350 million in grants are going to become available for the construction and planning of wildlife crossings across the United States! You may have seen wildlife crossings in areas with the most at-risk animals (sometimes looking like human-built land bridges), but the pilot program aims to protect much more than just them. An estimated one million large animals and 200 people are killed every year in motorist-wildlife accidents (an additional 26,000 people are injured over this time). The pilot program won't be enough to prevent all fatalities, but it will give much more insight on the benefits and need of wildlife crossings. . . Having the best lawn in the neighborhood is like having a crown in the American suburbs. But what goes into a lawn like that oftentimes isn't good for the environment. . Fertilizer aside (which in large quantities, is also incredibly bad), lawns are chocked full of chemicals. Treatments meant to keep weeds and pests at bay can be safe at small quantities, but are oftentimes overused. How overused? To put it in perspective: American homeowners use 10 times more chemical pesticides per acre on their lawns than are used on U.S. farmlands! This extreme dousing only means that runoff becomes even more toxic, affecting wildlife downstream, but also areas downwind and groundwater below the surface. . . As humans, we use our brains to plan, talk, and do practically anything. But learning that some animals aren't like this? It's a foreign concept. . Fact: Octopuses have a partially de-centralized nervous system, meaning a lot of their 'thinking' doesn't happen in their brains at all. A whopping two-thirds of their neurons are distributed between their limbs, with each limb having more than twice the number of neurons than a frog does! Their brains are still the central control center, telling the body to 'find food' and 'swim away', but their brains don't actually tell the limbs how to do it. The tentacles gather information about its surroundings, but instead of relaying it to the brain, it decides what to do and how to continue on its own. . Conclusion? There is SO MUCH we don't yet understand about the animal kingdom. Preserving and studying our planet's lifeforms not only ensure their survival, but our own. While the world's ecosystems are able to change with the times, keeping a timely balance (from our standpoint) is much more delicate. . . No matter what your stance is on AI - it's undoubtedly the talk of the town. And while there are pros and cons to what artificial intelligence could become (i.e. a utopia vs. a robot revolution), there are also effects it already has on our environment. . 🌎 The Good: Efficiency + climate tools: For certain tasks, AI is simply faster and more accurate than we are. AI requires electricity in order to operate, but because tasks take just a fraction of the time, it may actually have a smaller footprint overall. Tack on the fact that AI is used to build incredible tools that map Earth's carbon stores and study the effects of climate crises, and AI looks like a planet-saving tool. . 🌎 The Bad: Huge energy costs: While in operation, AI may save some electricity - but to set up, it's a different story. Training the AI model accounts for roughly 40% of the AI's total power usage, and big players like Google found that artificial intelligence accounted for 10 to 15% of its total electricity consumption. . 🌎 The Verdict: We're in the beginning, and "we know nothing": AI is a shiny new toy that makes some tasks easier, but there is a lot that we simply don't understand. Because big tech companies are in a race to create the best AI, models are kept under wraps, making it difficult to study its carbon emissions. Transparency is key, and until we can fully study AI models, it's hard to say just how 'green' they can be. . . The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) just released their latest report on the state of our climate. We obviously can't share the entire report here, but we can definitely share some highlights. . 🌎 We have known of human-caused climate change for some time (the IPCC was formed some 40 years ago!), but it's more dire to fix now than ever. We've already seen a 1.1 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures, and are on track to crossing multiple, irreversible climate thresholds well within our lifetimes. The infamous 1.5 degree threshold could even be crossed within the next decade. . 🌎 There are promising pieces to keep in mind though. Globally, climate finance has increased 60% within a decade, and 18 countries have completely decoupled economic growth from its emissions. Even big players are making moves: China is set to install more solar capacity this year than the US has in the last decade! . 🌎 The biggest thing to keep in mind? It's not too late. As a planet, we may be sailing right into a storm, but our rudder is far from broken. The crisis may seem insurmountable, but progress shows that if we continue accelerating as we have, we have a shot. A quote by Friederike Otto, one of the report authors, words it flawlessly, "We actually have all the knowledge we need... We just need to implement it." . . Super News! Chile has declared an area of the Atacama Desert known for its phenomenal superblooms as its 44th national park! The desert is one of the driest deserts in the world (the driest overall if you aren't counting polar deserts) - yet every few years, the desert erupts into a field of color. More than 200 species of flowering plants blossom here, including lilies, nightshade, and nolanas. . Protecting this rare, natural sight is important, but it isn't the only reason for setting up the national park. Pollinators and other animals are lured to the area in times of the superbloom, providing much needed food and water in an otherwise unforgiving desert. The flowering event is also heavily influenced by climatic events, giving scientists a chance to better understand how events like these may someday look in our changing world. . . Protection and conservation of natural habitats is very crucial.
Humpback whales are some of the largest animals on the planet. They can eat a ton (easily), but for most of the year, they don't actually eat at all. . Fact: Pacific humpback whales live off their fat reserves for 5.5 to 7.5 months at a time, only eating when they reach their summer feeding grounds. The journey, some 3,000 miles, is one of the longest migrations in the world. So unsurprisingly, when they finally make it to their destination, they gorge. The whales can eat 3,000 pounds of krill a day, all just to fatten up and make the journey again once the summer comes to a close. . Today is World Wildlife Day! Of course, we're all about conserving the environment, but we definitely have a soft spot when it comes to our planet's wildlife. We love sharing facts about animals and raising an appreciation for the Earth's habitats. If you're looking for a way to celebrate the day (other than scanning our posts 😉), take some time to go outside and enjoy your local wildlife. Planting native trees and vegetation can benefit local species immensely, or even donating to a local environmental organization. . . Lions, tigers, and bears are all known for their carnivorous tendencies - but the Andean bear (also known as the Spectacled bear) is a bit of an outlier. . Fact: Meat only makes up between 5 and 7 percent of the Andean bear's diet. While they don't take the crown as the most vegetarian bear (that honor is left for the giant panda), they can commonly be found feasting on berries, cultivated plants, and even cactus. When they do get around to eating meat, their prey really only consists of rodents, nesting birds, and other slow moving animals. . . We pride ourselves on being able to take complicated environmental issues and fitting the most vital information into a short social media caption. But no matter how hard we try, there will always be problems that simply have too many working parts and need a deeper dive. That's why, starting with today's post, we will now be writing periodical long-format posts! Our social media posts will include the most vital information, but the extended version (if you will) will be posted on our blog (https://blog.pixelplanettoday.com). . So what's the big issue we're covering this week? Our home city of Omaha, Nebraska is set to move into the 21st century by incorporating a streetcar in its urban core (Downtown and surrounding areas). It's something we're incredibly excited about, but there are some residents that are not. While there are plenty of economic benefits, we're (obviously) most interested in the environmental ones. Being an all-electric and free-to-the-public mode of transportation will make urban travel in the city much greener (and remove the need for the crazy amount of parking lots). It won't go into service until the end of 2026, but it's still a great step towards a greener Omaha. . . Read our in-depth blog post about the benefits of a streetcar in Omaha: https://www.blog.pixelplanettoday.com/2023/02/08/hello-omaha-the-benefits-of-a-streetcar/ . Graphic shows a streetcar. To address the drivers of deforestation, the government must develop a unique landscape management approach.
