Around the world, countries are embracing the transition to cleaner and safer technology in the realm of passenger and cargo transportation. Governments are taking proactive steps to encourage the adoption of alternative fuels and electrification for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. They are achieving this by enacting legislation that mandates compliance with specific emission standards for vehicles on the roads. In Kenya, the government has initiated a regulatory overhaul to address emission standards for local vehicle assemblers. These new regulations mark a departure from the standards that have been in place since 2000, shifting towards the more environmentally friendly Euro 4 emission standards outlined by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KS 1515:2019). Initially set for enforcement in 2021, the deadline was extended to January 2023 following negotiations with industry stakeholders. However, the implementation of KS 1515:2019 is currently on hold due to a court order from the Environment and Land Court, pending a verdict. Similarly, neighboring East African nations like Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and Tanzania are also committed to improving air quality by adopting stricter emission standards for imported vehicles. For instance, Rwanda implemented mandatory vehicle emission testing in 2015. To address the disparities in emission standards across the region, the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) devised a roadmap aimed at harmonizing these standards within the East African Community (EAC). This comprehensive roadmap seeks to align various aspects such as terminology, emission limits, vehicle age restrictions, inspection schedules, testing methods, institutional frameworks, taxation policies, and vehicle disposal regulations. The ultimate goal is to establish uniform emission standards across East Africa, which is expected to significantly enhance air quality, public health, and overall environmental sustainability in the region. If these proposed laws come into effect, they will bring significant benefits to transporters, vehicle manufacturers, dealers, the community, and the environment. The adoption of Euro 4 emission standards in Kenya will compel vehicle manufacturers and dealers to exclusively offer vehicles that meet these new regulations, promoting cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation solutions. While this transition may require initial investments in Euro 4-compliant vehicles, it brings several advantages for business owners. Adhering to higher emission standards will enhance their reputation as responsible and sustainable transport providers, attracting environmentally conscious customers and bolstering their competitiveness in the market. Moreover, cleaner technologies translate into long-term cost savings, as Euro 4 vehicles are fuel-efficient and emit fewer pollutants, resulting in reduced operational expenses. Additionally, the emphasis on compliance and enforcement, including vehicle inspection and testing centers, will encourage fleet owners to maintain their vehicles in optimal condition, thereby contributing to improved overall performance, reliability, and safety. As part of Scania's commitment to driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system, our new product offerings align with this vision. Our P440 and P380 Euro 4 trucks, recently introduced in the Kenyan market, feature SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Reductant Tanks that utilize AdBlue to effectively reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from the vehicles. This technology underscores our dedication to minimizing the environmental impact of vehicle emissions and promoting cleaner transportation solutions. As a leading manufacturer of trucks across various applications, buses, and coaches, we firmly believe in the importance of sustainable mobility for a greener future. Through ongoing research and development, collaboration with industry partners and policymakers, and investments in alternative fuels and electrification, Scania is dedicated to pioneering innovations that advance sustainable transport and contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations. Our efforts align with global sustainability goals, and we aim to lead the industry in creating a more eco-friendly and efficient transport ecosystem. Scania's billion-dollar investment is now underway - "The world's greenest batteries" Scania's huge, highly automated battery factory in Södertälje can spit out a 1,200 kg battery pack of "the world's greenest batteries" every four minutes. In seven years, every second Scania produced will be electric. The fully automated "module line" consists of 38 ABB robots that handle one battery cell per second, encased in glass to avoid contamination from particles in the air. The cells are checked for voltage, resistance and temperature before being assembled into modules of 15 to 18 cells, with a cycle time of 15 seconds per module. https://www.nyteknik.se/industri/nu-ar-scanias-miljardsatsning-igang-varldens-gronaste-batterier/4190139 https://www.scania.com/group/en/home/newsroom/news/2023/scania-battery-assembly-plant-up-and-running.html

By: Tim Tomassen The 18-metre long trailer of this hybrid truck is covered with thin solar panels and is now taking to the public roads in Sweden. Anyone who ever drives on the highway in the sun knows that it can get quite hot in the car. Truck manufacturer Scania wants to use that solar energy to power its hybrid trucks while driving. The first tests on public roads have now started. 10,000 kilometers free The hybrid experimental truck has a power output of 560 horsepower and an 18-metre long trailer covered with 100 square meters of thin, flexible and lightweight solar panels developed especially for this project. They provide an estimated 8,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year when used in Sweden. That is good for about 5,000 kilometers that the truck can drive entirely on solar energy. And those numbers apply to Sweden, which is not too sunny. In sun-drenched Spain, the researchers expect that the panels can generate twice as much energy and that the truck can therefore drive 10,000 kilometers per year 'free'. 'Exciting project' The truck is the result of a two-year research collaboration between Scania, Uppsala University and several energy and transport companies. “This is an exciting project in which academia and industry are working together to reduce the climate impact of trucking,” said Erik Johansson, project manager and professor of physical chemistry at Uppsala University. The truck is now being tested on public Swedish roads by the transport company Ernsts Express AB. These tests will show how much emissions the solar truck will save. Watch the video below for more details about the truck: https://youtu.be/J-p_dK1h-iQ

In the autumn of 2022, Scania revealed a strategy to work with our suppliers to decarbonise the production of our trucks by 2030. Any vehicle has two main components that cause its lifetime emissions: fuel and production. We have previously communicated our work with reducing the emissions from fuels, and now we are ready to share our strategy to decarbonise the production of our trucks. The supply chain is a complicated system of thousands of companies that supply us with materials, services, and products. Changing how these suppliers work takes a long time, so our strategy identifies the most important areas to work on and shows the direction that our suppliers need to follow over the next 8 years. Through life cycle assessments, we have chosen four key emission “hotspot” areas in our production process: batteries, steel, aluminium, and cast iron. By setting a clear target of 100% green batteries, 100% green steel, 100% green aluminium, and 100% green cast iron by 2030, we will drive the transition to sustainable transports by showing our support for suppliers that choose to invest in green energy and green technologies. Our definition of “green” requires that the suppliers eliminate their main emission sources, for example through utilising low emission energy or recycled materials. Removing coal from the steel making process is an example of this. Setting the target is the first step towards clarifying our requirements on ourselves and our supply chains. We will now work together with the suppliers to make sure that we reach our targets and accelerate the transition towards zero-emission transports. “We’re pleased to note that several of our current and future suppliers are frontrunners in decarbonisation and will collaborate with us to reach the targets.”, says John van Russom, Head of Purchasing at Scania. During the UN climate conference COP27, Scania participated in the COP27 Climate Hub, an on-site and digital broadcast hosted by We Don’t Have Time from Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. Andreas Follér, Head of Sustainability of Scania joined the broadcast from Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to talk about partnerships for decarbonization. Scania has an ambitious decarbonization plan, and as with any large company, the supply chain is a crucial puzzle piece in reducing emissions. Andreas Follér’s message was clear: In order to reach sufficient emissions reductions, Scania must collaborate with their suppliers: “We are also manufacturers, we have set some really bold targets to decarbonize our supply chain. By 2030, it is our ambition to have 100% green steel, 100% green batteries, 100% green aluminium, and 100% green cast iron, and we can do that because we are partnering up with key suppliers and technology partners in our supply chain.” In order to meet these targets, Scania has invested in developing new materials for its trucks. One example is the collaboration with Northvolt which includes research and development to produce the best batteries for heavy-duty transport. Scania has also invested in fossil-free steel manufacturing, giving a strong demand signal to manufacturers that a sizable company is committed to buying steel produced without fossil fuels. But making fossil-free trucks is not enough. In order to shift from today’s technology to zero-emission transport modes, the trucks also need to have access to a sufficient charging network. To overcome the challenge of governments being too slow in this transition, Scania cooperates with its competitors through a joint venture which is setting up 1700 high-voltage charging points powered by renewable energy across Europe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHAGR_QdfXQ&t=15038s Rewatch the COP27 Climate Hub anytime on We Don’t Have Time Play.

The need to electrify is crucial for every transportation business, and we are committed to it. That is why we were one of the first companies in our industry to commit to the Science Based Targets initiative and to align our business with the Paris Agreement. These steps are a part of our way forward to tackle climate change and limit global warming. At Scania, we are now opening doors to electrified transportation and its availability for a wider range of customers. Our latest battery electric vehicle (BEV) truck generation is equipped with 624 kWh of batteries which opens up the possibility of electrified regional long-haul operations. The trucks can transport train weights of up to 64 tons, and with a charging speed of up to 375 kW, an hour of charging will add some 270 to 300 km of range. “The addition of these solutions to Scania’s portfolio is a major step-change for customers who want to take charge,” says Fredrik Allard, Senior Vice President and Head of Electrification at Scania. “We are facilitating a transition for our customers by including important customer values such as a close partnership and zero emissions.” “Scania has now reached a favorable maturity regarding our electrified offer,” says Allard. “With this major addition to our existing hybrids and the BEVs for urban distribution we introduced in 2020, we can now offer a sustainable and multi-faceted portfolio of zero-emission solutions for our customers.” “Tackling the global CO2 challenges means that we all need to produce and consume in new ways,” says Christian Levin, Scania’s CEO. “Reduce, reuse and recycle have always been important for Scania. The only thing that stands between us and a major transition to a fossil-free transport system based on electrified solutions is a complete charging infrastructure, but we are seeing great progress there too.” The next-level Scania electrified trucks can now be ordered in dialogue with Scania representatives, and production will commence in Q4 2023. On June 1st, Evalena Falck, Director Strategic Account Management at Scania, attended the STHLM+50 Climate Hub to talk about Scania’s work to decarbonize the road transport sector in a keynote and panel along with other actors in the transport supply chain. At Scania, we have three pillars of sustainable transport: energy efficiency, renewable fuel & electrification, and smart & safe transport. Together with our partners and customers, we are driving the shift in all three of these areas to move faster towards a sustainable transport system. 96% of our emissions come from trucks that are already on the roads, so that is where we need to make the biggest effort. In addition to the target to halve the emissions from our operations by 2025, we have set a target to reduce emissions from our products by 20% until 2025, compared to 2015 levels. Fuel efficiency is an important factor in this, and our recently launched new powertrain is able to reduce fuel consumption by 8%. But the majority of our emissions reductions will come from using new types of fuel. We are using biomethane, hydrated vegetable oil, and biodiesel depending on the availability of infrastructure, but we still have a long way to go in terms of reducing the carbon footprint of our trucks. Evalena Falck says, "We are encouraged to see the progress when it comes to renewable gas availability and especially in Europe, in North Europe, in Netherlands and Germany but also in Brazil, biomethane is now getting possible to drive, and I think this is an excellent way to reduce CO2. We also work, of course, with hydrated vegetable oil and biodiesel, but here we are relying a lot on the infrastructure availability as well." Electrifying long haul transports is another solution with a lot of potential to reduce emissions. In the coming years, we will have an electric truck that can drive for 4,5 hours on a 45-minute charge. This technology can significantly reduce road transport emissions, but only if the public charging infrastructure is there. Today, we are faced with a significantly higher cost for fast chargers for trucks than for cars. We are doing our share to bridge this gap by working with our competitors to install 1700 charging points on the main roads of Europe, but we need more support from governments to increase the supply of affordable, renewable energy in the grid. As it stands, we could reduce the lifecycle carbon footprint of our trucks by 55% if the European energy mix was entirely renewable when compared to the energy mix of today. If we are to have a truly decarbonized trucking sector, this is imperative. Watch the full panel discussion from STHLM+50 broadcast to hear Evalena Falck, Director Strategic Account Management at Scania, talk about the challenges, opportunities, and the sustainability leadership role of Scania to take on the challenges and relentlessly work on the solutions: https://youtu.be/Su-0nbufMSc?t=4249 We understand that sustainability has many dimensions and we are focused on embedding sustainability in our products, and above all in our strategy. Andreas Follér, our Head of Sustainability and the Sustainability Manager of the year in Sweden was brief, but clear about our focus. He said, “We were the first company in our industry to set science-based carbon reduction target that ensures that our product development, our strategies are aligned with the Paris Agreement so that we know we are carrying our share.” His panel discussion from STHLM+50 broadcast: https://youtu.be/HBApGnFtS3o?t=2300 ABOUT STHLM+50 CLIMATE HUB 50 years after the very first UN Environment Conference, placing nature and poverty at the forefront of the international agenda, Stockholm welcomed the world again in June 2022. Together with partners, We Don'tHave Time and UNDP hosted a public arena for the entire week of Stockholm+50, leading up to World Environment Day 2022. The five-day event was broadcast live from SPACE Arena in central Stockholm. On Twitter alone, the broadcasts reached more than 31 million viewers from 160 countries.

The emissions that Electrolux, and any other global company, causes extend to much more than our own emissions. For instance, the transportation of our goods emits around 300,000 metric tons - more than the emissions of all the energy consumed by our operations. To maximize our positive climate impact, we need to start collaborations and agreements with other actors to reduce these emissions that are outside of our direct control. Our new collaboration with Swedish global transport solutions company Scania is an important step in this journey. The focus of the collaboration is to engage, establish and drive the involvement of key stakeholders, technology leading and innovative transport companies and solution providers. As part of the partnership, Electrolux and Scania will use electric trucks in Europe and soon Asia, and biogas trucks in Latin America. “The majority of our carbon emissions occur in Scope 3 and collaborations such as this are key to reaching our climate targets. To be working with Scania, another Swedish-based, global company is an exciting opportunity to make an impact. We call on the rest of the heavy-duty transport industry to work with us to accelerate change in markets around the world,” says Electrolux CEO Jonas Samuelson. The partnership has already started as a battery-powered electric truck in Italy, which will transport Electrolux goods on a daily basis, was put into operation in June 2022. Compared to a diesel truck, this truck emits 98% less carbon per kilometer. A 64-tonne electric truck has been delivered to chemical supplier Wibax and will operate on the roads of northern Sweden. The 3-axle electric tractor contributes to Wibax reaching its climate targets and is yet another example of Scania innovating in close partnership with a customer. Electrified heavy transport is already happening. This is something that Scania and Wibax show with this new vehicle which runs solely on electricity. The electric truck has a total weight of 64 tonnes, including load and trailer, and will run on the roads between the cities of Piteå and Skellefteå in northern Sweden, a distance of 80 kilometres one way. The vehicle’s performance and load capacity are made possible by the development of a significantly stronger electric motor. As part of a long-term partnership, Scania and Wibax will work together to optimise the use of the vehicle over time – including charging, battery life length and route planning. This will also provide valuable insights to Wibax as they prepare to add additional electric vehicles to their fleet in the future. For Wibax, the Scania electric truck is a way to reduce the climate impact from its operations. “We have done our utmost to be sustainable since the company was founded in 1986, and as we have identified transports as our biggest environmental impact, this electric truck is a step to ensure we can carry on with our operations with the climate in mind. During the lifetime of this truck, Wibax will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,400 tonnes, making it a true game-changer,” says Jonas Wiklund, CEO of Wibax Group. Scania and Wibax have a close collaboration to enable this electrified solution. “This is the first fully electric 64-tonner that we put on the road in customer operations. Step by step, we are demonstrating that electric solutions are happening very fast and for basically all segments,” says Fredrik Allard, Head of E-mobility, Scania. The continued and rapid development puts further focus on the need for infrastructure and green electricity also outside the urban areas. Steps are being taken but more speed is needed. In this case, the power company Skellefteå Kraft has been involved and is delivering the charging infrastructure. “It is vital for us to be at the forefront in sustainability matters. It shouldn’t just be something you read on a piece of paper; it should mean something for real. Lighter electrified trucks have been available on the market for a while, but for us, it only really matters now when we are able to electrify our 64-tonne loads. Our values are ‘great chemistry’ and this investment is in line with that motto. These issues have been on the table for long, but now we see that the demand for sustainable solutions from the market increases. This is beginning to happen for real,” says Wiklund. On #COP26 Transport Day, we announce another strong commitment to zero-emission vehicles with our endorsement of a first ever global Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on zero-emission trucks and buses. It is a coordinated effort by governments and industry leaders that have agreed to support and work towards the MoU goals and to facilitate net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The initiative is driven by CALSTART and the government of the Netherlands. The MoU means that for the first time: • leading countries are aligned on a pathway toward reaching 100% zero-emission new truck and bus sales by 2040. • cars, vans, trucks, and buses are all on a pathway to 100% zero emissions and in line to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. • zero-emission trucks and buses deliver not only climate and health benefits, but also drive new investment, technology innovation, clean technology jobs and energy security. “We will do our part to facilitate scaling of solutions faster and more cost-efficiently, not the least through initiatives that spur the build out of charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles,” says Scania CEO Christian Levin.

Scania plans to invest well over 1 billion SEK in a battery assembly plant in Södertälje, Sweden. The plant will assemble battery modules and packs from cells which will be delivered from Northvolt’s battery factory in Skellefteå, Sweden. “This is a tangible manifestation of our determination to take a leading role in heavy vehicle electrification, which is needed to fulfil our commitment to science-based climate targets,” says Ruthger de Vries, Head of Production and Logistics at Scania. Well done, Scania! You truely lead by example 👏 (Image borrowed from Scania’s website)

As a show of commitment to battling climate change and to reaching the goal of the Paris Agreement, Scania is calling for a Climate Day. The focus will be on conducting further training in sustainability for Scania’s employees. “We have worked purposefully with sustainability and it has a profound impact on our products, our production and the way we do business,” says President and CEO Henrik Henriksson. “Now we are taking yet another step and we choose training as our course of action for our Climate Day since we believe that increasing knowledge about climate change is crucial to be able to deliver on the Paris agreement.” Climate Day at Scania will take place on 20 September as a forerunner to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York. On this day, operations at Scania’s head office as well as at production sites and local Scania units across the world will stop for one hour. During this hour, employees will learn more about climate change and the company will tap into the ideas of all the employees on how Scania can improve its work with sustainability in every aspect of its operations even further. “Business has an important part to play in fighting climate change. We cannot stand idly by and wait for others to take action. I would like to challenge other companies to take action and hopefully we can generate great impact together”, Henriksson continues. Scania is committed to driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. Climate Day is another step in delivering on that mission. Scania continuously works to minimise emissions from its products. The ambition also applies to reducing emission levels generated from its own operations and transport footprint in these areas, Scania has, over the past years, committed to a number of targets: To cut CO2 emissions by 50 percent from its land transport per transported tonne by 2025 To cut CO2emissions in its operations by 50 percent by 2025 To switch to 100 percent fossil-free electricity by 2020 To continue offering the broadest range of products on the market that run on alternatives to fossil fuel This is great and deserves climate love 💚. More companies should join in and dedicate a climate day! agree and share!

Agreed, this is all really positive! Keep it up Scania! I personally call for increased climate action from Scania when it comes to battling global warming and limiting the effects of the climate crisis. Being a powerful supplier to Brazil and their heavy industry forestry, mining and agriculture to name a few obvious ones, Scania should, in my opinion, start to use their influence 24/365. Scania has a golden opportunity to act consciously and sustainably at the same time to limit the Brazilian government cutting down "their" rainforest, respect the constitution and indigenous people. Thousands of Scania trucks are being used to speed up the climate crisis as operated by the current very unsustainable Brazilian administration. If not Brazil threatens to push global warming into a tipping point where the lungs of the Earth, the rainforest, may collapse. Since Brazil singlehandedly stem for approx. 40 per cent of all Scania trucks sold their supplying power on Brazil is huge #AcOnScience

This sends a very strong message. Are they committing to anything, collaborating with other companies, suppliers? It could have a snow ball effect if done with their entire echo-system. Many thumbs up!
