For the first time, wind and solar generated more of Chile’s electricity than coal over an entire 12-month period, from August 2021 to September 2022, shows a report produced by EMBER in partnership with Chile Sustentable and ACERA, la Asociación Chilena de Energías Renovables y Almacenamiento. 3 main points: 01: Solar and wind generated 27.5% of Chile’s electricity over the 12 months from October 2021 to September 2022, they are the largest source of electricity, overtaking coal power (26.5%), then hydro (21.8%) and gas (18.9%). The increase in wind and solar generation meant that fossil fuels generated less than half of Chile’s electricity in the last 12 months; which is the first time this has happened since 2007. Before that, Chile’s electricity system was dominated by hydro and gas, before coal became the predominant fuel used to cover new electricity demand. 02: Wind and solar doubled since 2018: In just three years, Chile’s solar and wind electricity generation doubled from 9 TWh (12%) in 2018 to 18 TWh (22%) in 2021. 03: Demand grows, but emissions do not: Since 2016, Chile’s rise in electricity demand has been met entirely by wind and solar. Annual emissions dropped by 6% from 2016 to 2021, despite overall electricity demand rising 11% in the same period Chile’s rapid transition from coal power to wind and solar while growing its electricity demand provides inspiration for other emerging economies according to EMBER. https://ember-climate.org/insights/research/wind-and-solar-overtake-coal-in-chile/ .

Governing authorities in Germany have urged one of the country’s biggest energy companies to stop dismantling a wind park to make way for an open-pit mine, after activists said the move symbolised a rollback of the government’s climate protection plans. Consisting of eight turbines, the Keyenberg wind park in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia is located about half a mile from the edge of a 48 km² surface mine, named after the local village of Garzweiler. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/26/german-windfarm-coalmine-keyenberg-turbines-climate

NEW YORK & STOCKHOLM — March 10. World governments are spending $11 million dollars on subsidizing fossil fuels – every single minute. That’s just under $6 trillion a year, according to calculations by the International Monetary Fund, IMF. The governments spending these staggering amounts of public funds are the same governments that have made commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement to decarbonize their economies and collectively achieve a net-zero emission world by 2050. Register here – it is free. How can this be? Who benefits from these subsidies? And what effect do they have on our societies, today and tomorrow? In the run-up to COP26 in Glasgow, the United Nations Development Program, UNDP, launched the #DontChooseExtinction campaign, featuring Frankie the dinosaur. It is UNDP's most successful campaign ever and has reached 1,5 billion on social media. It also helped bring fossil fuel subsidies up on the agenda during the climate conference. Now it’s time for the next step: the Dino Talks. Dino Talks is a whole new broadcast series co-created by UNDP and We Don’t Have Time, and supported by the circular tech company Prime Computer. In ten episodes, Dino Talks will bring in experts to help dig deeper into the fossil fuel subsidies and how they accelerate everything from extreme weather events to deadly health problems, while also slowing down innovation and sustainable development. Boaz Paldi is the United Nations Development Programme's Global Partnership & Campaigns Manager, and a key force behind the #DontChooseExtinction campaign. He says: ”With the 'Don’t Choose Extinction' campaign we sparked a global conversation around the issue of fossil fuel subsidies. The partnership with We Don’t Have Time was pivotal in reaching citizens across the globe. Dino Talks is the natural evolution of the excellent partnership and will allow our audience a deep dive into this very critical issue.” Ingmar Rentzhog, founder and CEO of We Don’t Have Time: ”The fossil-fuel subsidies have managed to stay under the radar for decades. Last year’s amazing UNDP campaign was a wake-up call, and we are extremely proud to extend our partnership with UNDP by taking the next step in spreading awareness about this destructive spending of public funds. We aim high and expect to reach millions of viewers globally.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Wkg_f02Zk ABOUT THE BROADCASTS The first three episodes of Dino Talks will be co-hosted by Boaz Paldi and Nick Nuttall, one of the world’s leading experts in environmental communication. A former Director of Communications and Spokesperson for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Nick Nuttall has led the communications team at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and was the UN spokesperson for the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. He is now Director of Global Communications at We Don’t Have Time. Episode 1: Why do we still subsidize fossil fuels? March 14, 15:00 CET. Guests: George Gray Molina (Bolivia), Head of Strategic Engagement and Chief Economist at UNDP, who has helped coordinate a several landmark reports on fossil fuel subsidies. Ploy Achakulwisut (US), scientist with the Stockholm Environment Institute. She served as a SustainUS youth delegate to the 2014 UN climate negotiations and was included in Grist magazine’s top 50 fixers in 2019. Episode 2: Deeper dive into damage caused by fossil fuel subsidies April 4, 15:00 CET Guests: Michael Taylor (New Zealand), Senior energy analyst at the International Renewable Energy Agency. Ivo Mulder (Netherlands), Head of the Climate Finance Unit at the UN Environment Programme, and lead author on the State of Finance for Nature. Episode 3: Why are governments struggling to change? Apotea.se, Sweden's largest online pharmacy, has had its climate goals approved by Science Based Targets. Apotea thus joins the 1,500 companies worldwide that have joined the global climate goals. Apotea has joined the 1,500 companies globally that have decided to set climate goals based on research through the Science Based Targets initiative. The research emphasizes that warming should not exceed 1.5 degrees to avoid the worst effects of climate change, and with goals set according to Science-Based Targets, Apotea contributes to the world staying within the boundaries of climate. Science Based Targets is an international collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). “Sustainability is an important part both in Apotea's daily work and in the goals we set for the future. We are happy and proud that Apotea is the first e-commerce in Sweden to have its climate goals approved by Science Based Targets. This means that our business has a scientifically based climate goal that follows the Paris Agreement to help reduce global warming, ”says Sofia Modig, head of sustainability at Apotea. An inventory of emissions from Apotea's operations has been made and today the targets for the operations were officially approved. “It is a milestone for Apotea that we have had our climate goals approved, we hope that this will inspire our suppliers and partners to do the same. The more people who set goals and start to reduce their impact, the better for the environment, ”says Pär Svärdson, CEO of Apotea. https://www.apotea.se/apotea-i-media#/pressreleases/apotea-foersta-svenska-e-handel-att-ansluta-sig-till-de-globala-klimatmaalen-3107784 Text for the pictures. Apotea builds electric fleet - "someone should be first" The e-commerce giant Apotea is starting a collaboration with Einride to coordinate and electrify its heavy transports. In this way, the CEO hopes to reduce his company's climate footprint - and soon offer "emission-free deliveries" to his customers.

It is great to see that Apotea’s work with climate action is getting attention! Apotea is a fast-growing e-commerce pharmacy and we have the ambition to be Sweden’s most sustainable company. During 2021 we became the first e-commerce company to have our climate target approved by the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and we are now striving towards net zero. We are implementing a range of solutions to reduce our emissions, such as solar panels on our storage facility roofs. We have also worked hard to improve our packing routines to ensure all the space in our packages is fully utilized, thereby reducing unnecessary transport. Lately we purchased a fleet of electric trucks that will cover most of our linehaul. But as with every retailer, our biggest emissions take place in what is technically called Scope 3 - outside our own operations. To influence this, we must collaborate with and make demands on our supplier partners. This is no small task and we welcome input on how we can address this challenge effectively since we are in the process of developing a solid strategy for Scope 3 emissions.

A group of researchers at the Structural Technology Group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya has developed a new multilayer concrete that is able to support plant life. Both a medium for growth and a construction material, the system allows for thermal regulation and CO2 sequestration. They are using the material to construct prototypes of office building capable of sucking more CO2 and pollution out of the air than thousands of trees, while emitting fresh oxygen for us to breathe. A moss-growing bench in London alone does the work of 275 trees, imagine what a whole building made of the stuff can do. We know the problem and we also have the solutions, but still there are a lot of companies with sustainable manager and sustainable departments with no budget and without the possibility of obtaining any decisive decisions. Instead of using skilled people (most of the time young women) to do sustainability reports that will be read only once - Let us focus of the real problem with major polluters and that it is still profitable to make "wrong". Money is the driving force for most people and no one will stop making wrong until the system is changed or profitable alternatives are created for the major polluters. My idea is that the business community should focus on the only task that will solve the climate crisis - To help those who account for 70-80 percent of the pollution to become profitable in areas that can be considered sustainable. Stop writing sustainability reports - If you want one in your company, there are as many as you can copy. https://www.svensktnaringsliv.se/ https://www.dagensarena.se/innehall/100-foretag-star-70-procent-av-utslappen/

🙄 Honest people can get mislead in the existing system of "green" marketing and claims, and well meaning regulations even support some of the disconnect that misleads them. 💚 One issue that the below article by @Enablesus points out is that products and services are not companies, and consumers should also look at the organization and brand behind the product or service they buy. There are many cases where a brand has one or a few sustainable or climate friendly products, but dozens if not hundreds of non-sustainable products. It all adds up! 💡 Five good points are highlighted of what both consumers and organizations should look for or take notice of. Check out the WDHT article on this issue. https://app.wedonthavetime.org/posts/c8a2777a-157b-4b5c-9456-f73bae517e42?utm_source=url-copy%26utm_medium=wdht-web-app-share%26utm_campaign=Enablesus

Värnamo company Separett AB has achieved a very significant international success: European product design award. It is a toilet without water and with integrated tank for collecting urine to separate it from the solid stool. The jury found that the need for waterless toilets is increasing in the world, but also appreciated the aesthetic design. - Water as a solution for toilets is not a sustainable solution, but the options available are actually not that many. Then it should also be aesthetically pleasing, this must be the most Instagram-friendly toilet without water, says development manager Karl Eriksson with a smile. In addition to function and aesthetics, the jury valued the size, ie the small size that Separett clearly manifests in the name of the product. It is by no means a coincidence. Tiny is very consciously developed towards what is internationally called the tiny-house movement, which in simple terms can be described as a movement where people choose to live less for ideological, environmental, economic or other reasons. Caravans, mobile homes, houseboats and cottages are just a few examples. Text (parts) & photo Henrik Timner VN https://separett.com/en

Slow is a Denmark-based coffee company delivering sustainable coffee to companies in the Nordics. Slow grows coffee in Laos and with agroforestry, protects both the forests and small farmers. Slow tackles 8 Sustainable Development Goals with its work: 1, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 18 Looking at goals 12, 13 and 15, Slow implements agroforestry based methods, which prevent soil degradation and deforestation and protect biodiversity. In Laos, coffee bushes grow under trees which protect the coffee from the sun. The forest improves the quality of coffee by slowing down the ripening of berries and providing them with nutrients and an ideal growing soil. Slow's coffee is certified organic. The variety of trees growing on the farms attracts animals and insects maintaining biodiversity at a healthy level. The coffee is exported to Denmark and Finland at the end of the season where it's roasted and delivered to companies, restaurants and cafés in the Nordic countries, it isn't sent back to the other side of the world! On a social level, one of the main goals of Slow is to support farmers and improve their livelihood. The company provides farmers with advanced payment so farmers have access to cash on a regular basis throughout the year, bank accounts so farmers can access their money directly and an emergency fund if a farmer would become ill for example. Agroforestry also allows them to diversify their source of income. I like how Slow presents its work in alignment with the SDGs I think it's a very clear way to do it and I hope to see more Slow Coffee around! If I had to be critical, even though Slow works with goal 5 (gender equality) and has 50% of women farmers I think it would be good to think about goal 5 in their team as well :). During the weekend Portugal shut down Pego, its last coal-fired power plant in Abrantes, 9 years ahead of the 2030 target. The power plant was responsible for 4% of Portugal's carbon emissions. By doing so, Portugal fulfilled a pledge it made along with 18 other nations in 2017 during COP23 to phase out coal power plants. It's the 4th country in Europe after Belgium, Austria and Sweden to go coal-free. Portugal generates as much as 70% of its electricity from renewable sources but remains heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels to meet all of its energy needs. One of the questions is what fuel will replace coal at Pego and environmentalists are worried that the facility will be converted to burn biomass and hope that more investment will be put into renewable energies. https://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/11/22/momentous-day-portugal-becomes-europes-4th-country-quit-coal

For the moment Portugal has a great area of Eucalyptus forest. Eucalyptus is not native, and is particularly dangerous in forest fires. There should be a plan to reduce Eucalyptus cultivation in favour of native trees that can support biodiversity. So the issue is complex, but there might be a way to increase the sustainability of Portuguese forests while allowing some use of Eucalyptus biomass in the interim. While laws have been passed to reduce Eucalyptus cultivation, progress is not obvious as enforcement seems to be lax.

Governor Kathy Hochul, the first female Governor of New York State, is setting examples of climate leadership. She has just announced New York's groundbreaking electric vehicle infrastructure program known as "EV Make-Ready," which will deploy more than 50,000 new public and commercial Level 2 charging ports (capable of charging a vehicle at least two times faster than a standard wall outlet) across the state by 2025. This will increase the number of non-residential charging ports by more than tenfold. Before the program began, there were only 4,571 publicly accessible chargers statewide. The program is great for the environment, health, and the economy. It supports emission-free transportation, which means clean air & good health. It also supports green economic activities that generate clean & green work opportunities. This particular program will stimulate $1.5 billion of investment and provide more than $2.6 billion in consumer benefits. Moreover, it is an inclusive program as it will provide economic opportunities with $206 million dedicated for the benefit of disadvantaged communities. #uprootthesystem - As we are relying in you please be the decisioning powers or be held accountable. PLEASE ACT! Swedish Government and decisioning body are part of Subsidising $11 MILLION/ MINUTE to Fossil Fuel entangled companies! PLEASE Act! ALL THAT just stated: How is this still possible? We are living in the world of information and truth, right? And we ALL should be educated of the need to use renewable. Yet we are force fed distracting information that does little to Action. Please Act! Otherwise we are as stated below..."STOP HERE OR WE ARE FUCKED POINT"! Net Zero by 2050 are words. POLICY ACTION NEEDED!

Uppsala company together with Airline and Hydropower are reusing Carbon monoxide to mimic photosynthesis to reuse and captures carbon dioxide from the local CHP plant. Harnessing the Power of Biology and Big Data. Imagine a world where technology recycles waste carbon emissions and makes new products, cleaning our air and giving carbon a second chance. That world exists today with LanzaTech. Photo: unsplash

This is holds enormous potential. Both on the economic and technical level. We need to support solutions like this in the early stages.
