One of Sweden's largest gas station chains encourages its customers to participate in a competition to win an electric car. This campaign helps spread the message that electricity is the future and shows that Circle K is keeping up with the times. They realize that their future customers will want to charge their cars, not fill them up.

We are very happy and proud to see how our journey towards electrification gets attention! To us, there is no choice but to keep accelerating the shift to alternative fuels and our role as a large player also means that we have a great responsibility. We have tripled our rollout of new ultra-fast chargers (300 kW) around Sweden in order to stay ahead of the demand for charging, making it easy to shift to an electrical vehicle.

PARTNER UPDATE. Did you know that a small portion of seaweed in dairy cows’ diets can reduce their methane emissions by more than 80%? And that this can also lead to a higher income for the farmer. Neutral, the first carbon-neutral food company in the United States – and a new partner of We Don’t Have Time – will talk about this and other exciting climate solutions during Climate Week NYC. Neutral, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is on a mission to drastically reduce emissions from meat and dairy farms. The company was founded in 2019, and today its carbon-neutral dairy products can be found in 2,000 stores in 45 states. Having recently raised $ 12 million in its first series A funding, Neutral is now ready to move into the next phase of growth. ”Agriculture is a driver of climate change, but it can also be part of the solution. That’s why we founded Neutral”, says Ann Radil, Head of Carbon Reduction at Neutral. ”Neutral provides carbon-neutral staples found in most households, and we scale adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices.” Neutral works with primarily organic, family-owned farms. Each collaboration begins with a detailed and rigorous accounting of all the greenhouse gas emissions embodied in the end product. This life-cycle assessment, LCA, includes everything from what the cows eat and what the cows burp, to transportation, the energy used to power the farm, and what happens to the milk carton at the end of its life cycle. ”What the rigorous LCA tells us is that 72 percent of the footprint of dairy occurs on farm. The biggest opportunities that we see are the solutions that address the largest greenhouse gas emission sources on the farm. Many of those solutions are related to reducing methane, for instance by introducing new ways of handling manure, and changing what cows eat. This year alone we’re investing over a million dollars in projects that will reduce and remove more than 65 000 metric tonnes over their lifetime.” https://youtu.be/oJp9ZOZjTUs To reduce methane emissions, Neutral tries to identify forage modifications that cows will love to eat, like tannin-optimized feed. Lately the company has also started experimenting with seaweed. Research has shown that even a very modest amount of seaweed in the cows’ diet can reduce methane emissions by 82 percent or more. ”The research is really compelling. We’re actively working on a trial now with a seaweed supplement producer and one of our farmers, in partnership with Colorado State, to measure the effects in our supply chains. We think that there is a tremendous opportunity here.” Reducing methane burping may also improve milk production, thereby making the climate solution a good business case. And that’s just one of the economic benefits Neutral has discovered in their partnership with farmers. ”There is a fantastic business case here. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these products also yield co-benefits that the producers care about. It improves profitability, it improves soil health and resilience, it increases efficiency, and in some cases brings new revenue streams.” For many of the farmers Neutral are collaborating with, implementing these solutions is also about future-proofing their business models in an increasingly unstable climate. Extreme weather events, like forest fires and long-term droughts, are becoming increasingly common in many parts of the US. ”The farmers we work with are interested in solutions that will increase their resilience, for example soil health and water management. All farmers we work with today are in one way or another impacted by wildfire, which makes them start to rethink how they manage their herds, for instance.” Earlier this year, Neutral partnered with We Don’t Have Time. According to Ann Radil, it’s a perfect match. “You’re such a fantastic organization. We couldn’t be more mission-aligned. As a very nimble start-up, it’s been so important to us to have a very entrepreneurial partner in advocacy as well. Just the fact you gave us the ability to present a panel for South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. That was a huge opportunity for us to get together and highlight to a passionate audience what solutions are available and working. You need to have an entrepreneurial mindset to pursue some of these far-reaching opportunities to do this kind of storytelling, and we’ve found that to be the case with your group. We also love that you have a global audience. We’re going to look into various ways to engage with them.” On September 20, Ann Radil and Neutral’s CEO Marcus Lovell Smith will join the We Don’t Have Time broadcast The Road to COP27, a full-day live broadcast that is part of this year’s Climate Week NYC. ”We are really looking forward to networking with our partners and connecting with other leaders in this space, to share what we have learned, and to learn from others”, says Ann Radil. ”We’re also excited to wrap up some work we’ve been doing with food and agriculture working groups, which have been looking at how we collectively co-develop carbon accounting best practices that will incentivize the creating of insets versus offsets. We want companies to be incentivized to take responsibility for their own supply-chain emissions reduction. We’re not going to offset our way out of this problem.” By MARKUS LUTTEMAN

The first ever climate case in Russia was filed before the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation demanding that the Russian government protect its citizens from the risk of future death or serious illness by keeping global emissions to 1.5-1.8C in accordance with its obligations under domestic and international law. The case is brought by a diverse group of Russian citizens who span the breadth of the country from Irkutsz, Murmansk and Keremovo regions to the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The group faces considerable risks in bringing such a claim against a background of ever-increasing oppressive domestic measures which have been wielded to silence opposition and civil society voices over many years and increasingly so in recent months. The difficulties are heightened by the inevitable overlap between the issues raised by Russia’s war in Ukraine and the inadequacy of Russia’s approach to climate change to the extent that recent reports allege Russia to be burning £8 million of gas a day. Many climate activists are also anti-war activists in a country where it is now a criminal offense to even describe Russian actions in Ukraine as a ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ and some are already paying a heavy price for their uncompromising bravery. Russia is the fourth biggest global emitter and has been known for some years to be heating at double the rate of the rest of the globe. In order to ensure that aggregate global emissions remain below 1.5C in 2100 and meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, Russia must reduce its emissions by 36% before 2030. However, Russia’s current 2021 GHG strategy for the period to 2050 actually envisions GHG emissions rising rather than falling from 2119 million tons of CO 2 eq in 2019 to 2212 million tons of CO 2 eq in 2030. These emissions would align Russia with a temperature increase by 2100 of 4C compared to the pre-industrial global average temperature, ie. double the goal of the Paris Agreement. I would like to send a big climate love to this group of brave citizens who are actually putting their lives at risk in order to save our planet and humanity. EcoDefense is one among many others. In a global first, Brazil’s supreme court has declared the Paris Climate Agreement a human rights treaty. Within Brazil, the court ruled, the climate pact should supersede national law. “Treaties on environmental law are a type of human rights treaty and, for that reason, enjoy supranational status. There is therefore no legally valid option to simply omit to combat climate change,” the ruling said. The declaration was made as part of the court’s first climate change ruling, which ordered the Brazilian government to fully reactivate its national climate fund. The climate fund was set up in 2009 as part of Brazil’s national climate policy plan and was inoperative in 2019; annual plans had not been prepared and money had not been disbursed to support projects that mitigate climate change. This world-first decision could be the start of a global movement of reinforcing the status of the Paris Agreement. https://e360.yale.edu/digest/paris-agreement-human-rights-treaty-brazil

With news outlets reporting that governments in several countries are requiring citizens to use less power, energy systems and infrastructure in need of repair are struggling to cope with climate and weather disasters, surging global energy prices, and supply chain disruption. There is an alternative: renewables are here to stay, and together with energy storage, provide the key to countering climate change and securing reliable electricity. To develop and prosper we need a stable supply of energy. As the global population increases, developed countries continue to consume huge amounts of energy while demand is also rising in developing nations. Until now, we have turned to fossil fuels to meet our energy needs, but as we near the point of no return on reaching net-zero emissions by mid-century – to keep the global temperature below 1.5°C – the need to accelerate the renewable transition is acute. In many countries, weather and climate disasters are already causing damage and loss of life, while directly impacting power generation capacity. In addition, geopolitical events have a destabilising effect on our economies, and in some areas the infrastructure we have relied upon for decades no longer functions as it should, with maintenance leading to cost and downtime. These factors serve to strengthen the argument for lasting change on a macro level. To achieve this, governments and grid operators must embrace and support renewable technologies and the deployment of energy storage, to make clean power cost-efficient and continuously available. During the early summer of 2022, stories have emerged from multiple continents which underline the instability of the respective energy systems involved. Power crisis in Australia In mid-June, Chris Bowen, Australia’s energy minister, urged the population of New South Wales to switch off lights and cease to use electricity for 2 hours each evening, in order to avoid blackouts. With Australia still reliant on fossil fuels, much of the country’s electricity is generated from coal. Supply disruptions and flooding have led to unforeseen outages at several coal-fired power plants, and in combination with increasing energy prices worldwide, the country has found itself in the midst of an ongoing power crisis. The state of New South Wales, which includes Sydney, was asked to conserve power by the Australian government during June Japan switches off to conserve power In recent weeks Japan has experienced its most severe heatwave on record. A temperature of 40.2°C – the highest ever in the country during June – was recorded in the city of Isesaki. Heatwaves related to climate change are becoming more frequent occurrences, and not only pose a threat to health and well-being, but a significant risk of power shortages. As demand surges during the hot spell, reserves must stay above the required level to maintain grid stability. In an attempt to alleviate the problem and avoid a power crunch, towards the end of June, 37 million people were requested to conserve power by the government. A severe heatwave during the early summer has impacted Tokyo, along with other cities throughput Japan Load shedding in South Africa Power cuts have become a part of life in South Africa. Load shedding occurs when electricity demand exceeds supply capacity, and stress on the primary energy infrastructure needs to be relieved. This leads to widespread power outages, which result in cost and disruption. 2022 looks set to be become the worst year on record for load shedding across the country. Prospects of improvement are not promising, according to reports of ineffective maintenance carried out on generating units at state-owned power utility Eskom’s coal-burning power stations. Moreover, South Africa’s unreliable power supply does not come at a low cost for end users. Critics of a 20.5% price increase which took effect in April have observed that the population has faced a 307% electricity price increase during the last 13 years, presenting huge challenges for businesses and communities. Expert points to a renewable future Europe has also not been immune to rising energy prices and the effects of a severe power crunch, signifying that a global trend of instability and unreliability exists in the energy systems of today. It is reasonable to ask what we need from the grid of tomorrow, if we are to move past these issues, futureproof our power supply, and embrace sustainable development. During June, Amory Lovins, a respected expert in the energy field, highlighted to Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri that renewable sources, efficiency, and distributed systems, are central to achieving the next generation energy system we need. With leading experts pointing towards decentralised systems when discussing how to deliver cost effectiveness and high efficiency, what is stopping us from increasing the share of renewables in the energy mix? The role of long-duration energy storage Renewable energy sources can solve the transition to net-zero, but they must be combined with energy storage. The limitation with renewable sources such as wind and solar has always been their intermittency – securing the power when nature does not want to give it – but storage technologies offer a control function and can enable renewable energy to be accessed whenever it is needed. In its groundbreaking report, Net-zero power: Long duration energy storage for a renewable grid, the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council advised that in order to decarbonise our energy systems, we require a net-zero power sector driven by renewable energy. The LDES Council maintains that as our use of renewables increases, we will also need to consider some additional challenges: we must balance supply and demand, as well as managing changes in transmission patterns and decreased system stability due to the introduction of new streams. Flexibility will be critical, and this is also what long-duration energy storage can deliver. Investment on a large scale will be required to deploy the levels of storage needed to reach net-zero. The LDES Council suggests that between now and 2040, USD 1.5 to 3.0 trillion will need to be spent. This reads as an enormous number, but the LDES Council also points out that total investment over this period is in fact comparable to what is invested in transmission and distribution networks every 2 to 4 years. Instead of repairing systems which are not meeting demand, while not mitigating the catastrophic climate emergency which approaches, we can instead invest in building an improved energy infrastructure based on a renewable platform. Now is the time for governments and grid operators to set plans in motion and make the switch. Azelio and TES.POD technology Long-duration energy storage technologies that enable clean electricity and heat to be dispatched when needed are market ready and available today. Azelio’s TES.POD thermal storage system works by heating an aluminium alloy, using renewable sources such as solar PV, to phase change at 600°C (1110°F). Heat is then transferred to a Stirling engine through a heat transfer fluid. The Stirling engine runs a generator for electricity and heat between 55-65°C (130-150°F) to be supplied at hours when the sun is not shining or when direct production from solar is insufficient – enabling renewable power for the full 24-hour cycle. As power interruptions are reported with alarming regularity, it remains clear that industries and consumers around the world have difficulty sourcing on demand, affordable, and clean power from an infrastructure unable to guarantee energy security. Azelio’s modular and scalable solution offers energy self-sufficiency and the means to grow in a sustainable way. It's so funny that in this age people are still struggling with unreliable energy systems while there are numerous natural, efficient and reliable sources of energy that are free all we need is the technology of capturing it... Germany's energy-intensive industries, hard-hit by record prices and over-dependence on Russian gas, will receive €5 billion worth of subsidies after the EU's competition authority gave its green light to the scheme. Most of the subsidies will go to fossil-based energy! Energy-intensive industries like steel and chemicals have buckled under high electricity and gas prices in recent months, leading to a downturn in production and fuelling worries about Germany's competitiveness. Special sectors like the chemical industry, glass, steel, and ceramics will get even more subsidies. 70% of the price difference capped at €50 million will be given to these companies. I am not a big fan when XR interrupts ordinary people's lives by blocking the roads. But when they target the fossil fuel industry, I am 100% supportive. This is civil disobedience that works. Today XR blocked the Shell AGM. I know that companies see climate activists as a risk. And that forces them to change. Who wants to be on the podium of a company that people hate? This is only going to be worse! Oil companies must change fast or stop existing. We can't take them seriously when they continue to invest in new oil extractions. A senior safety consultant has quit working with Shell after 11 years, accusing the fossil fuel producer in a bombshell public video of causing “extreme harms” to the environment and double discourse, I let you read the beginning of her LinkedIn post: "Today I’ve ended my 11 year relationship as a safety consultant with Shell. I've surveyed thousands of Shell employees and contractors around the world to help keep the 'oil in the pipe' and prevent harm to people. I hope through this work I've helped avoid accidents and spills. But Shell’s disregard for climate change risks means they are completely failing on their Goal Zero safety ambition to “do no harm”. Shell is fully aware that their continued oil & gas extraction and expansion projects are causing extreme harms, to our climate, environment, nature and to people. I can no longer work for a company that ignores all the alarms and dismisses the risks of climate change and ecological collapse" You can read the rest and watch the video: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/caroline-dennett-6161a814_jumpship-truthteller-activity-6934409781495431168-7l1f/

Pinterest announced Wednesday it will implement a new climate misinformation policy notable for its strength and contrast to less comprehensive measures taken by other social media platforms. The policy prohibits paid and organic “content that denies the existence or impacts of climate change,” as well as false or misleading content regarding climate solutions. The new policy could also bar all content produced by entities funded by the Koch network. As reported by Quartz: In recent years, social media platforms have drastically expanded their rules for user-generated and advertising content, taking a hands-on approach to rooting out misinformation about elections, vaccines, and the pandemic. Pinterest’s announcement likely signals that misinformation about environmental risks is the next frontier of content moderation.

Eco-Sense Greetings. I agree with Respected FT for much wisdom shared. There are yet issues of historical and economic nature. To name a few,1) Unequal world where non-formal economy drained by war and defense industry totally ignored in Climate resilience. UNIDIR has really done a good job on getting 76K nuclear arsenals in the 1990s to 14K in recent.. Unfortunately, Malmo Nuclear Plant in Sweden so close to Copenhagen was one non-green action. This was shocking to me when I visited Malmoo in 1995, Under the DANIDA fellowship. 2) Need to take Space Eco Literacy to students and this is the right thing to happen by WDT in Sweden. Skanska has decided to link performance in sustainability issues to remuneration for more managers in the Group. If carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 7 percent per year, around 400 managers will receive shares as a reward. The company has previously had a remuneration system that included how well the sustainability goal is achieved, but it has only included Group management and CEOs of subsidiaries. Now Skanska is going even wider. At the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, a proposal was hammered through on compensation linked to sustainability goals, which also includes managers at business unit and group level. This will apply to approximately 400 of our senior executives and key personnel. The goals are set on an annual basis and are mainly about reducing the Group's carbon dioxide emissions. It will be a seven percent reduction annually and will apply for the next three years from 2023 ", says Lena Hök, the company's sustainability and innovation manager. One criterion is that managers must be part of Skanska's share savings program, as the remuneration is distributed in performance shares. Lena Hök states that approximately 40 percent of the company's employees are involved. “For us, it is about how we set the direction for Skanska. It is a major change that needs to be made and some strategic decisions need to be made. A large part of the emissions come from heavy machinery that runs on diesel. How are we going to rearrange that fleet? Or how can we streamline the number of transports? It is about delivering in the right direction every year to achieve our long-term goal, ”says Lena Hök. Of course, the financial targets still remain and also need to be met to determine how much performance shares the managers are entitled to. Up to 15 percent of the bonus will be linked to how well the sustainability goals are achieved and the rest to financial goals. But Lena Hök believes that the sustainability goals and the financial goals go hand in hand to an increasing extent nowadays. “There is a profitability in running and developing projects and buildings that maintain high sustainability performance. These include energy and water efficiency, but also taking into account health aspects such as air quality and light supply. It is of course value-creating that buildings contribute to well-being and good health for those who live there, ”says Lena Hök. Jan Ahmadi /DI Photo: Banfa Jawla Lena Hök will herself be covered by the new bonus system.

The European Commission has pushed back the tabling of its "Nature protection package", which included the proposal to slash the use and risk of chemical pesticides in half by 2030 and nature restoration targets which aim at halting biodiversity loss in Europe. According to some leaked drafts, the Commission was expected to set an EU-wide binding 50% pesticide reduction target by 2030, leaving member states free to set their national targets and the legal commitment to cover at least 10% of the European agricultural area with high-diversity landscape features. The reason behind this postponed action is the conflict in Ukraine But as everyone knows here. We don't have time to wait! We have already overstepped the final boundary, the future is now guaranteed to be very grim, war will pale into insignificance with what is to come. The powers to be will not fare any better. Sad times.
