🌊 OCEAN Action is CLIMATE Action! Dive into the Depths of Climate Impact on Our Oceans! 🌊 5 key revelations from IPCC's sixth assessment report, unveiling the stark reality of climate change's profound impact on our Ocean. 1️⃣ Ecosystems, and Communities under Siege: Climate change is wreaking havoc on ecosystems, putting aquaculture at risk and exacerbating natural disasters. Together with continued over-fishing, this domino effect is poised to widen regional and financial disparities among populations. With over 3 billion people relying on the ocean as their primary source of protein, the stakes are high. 2️⃣ Fisheries Facing Crisis: The industry-side of the coin, paints a grim picture for fisheries worldwide. At the current pace of climate change, a dramatic decline in fisheries yield is expected, impacting global communities. Even Norwegian coastal waters, known for their rich marine resources, are not immune to this impending crisis. 3️⃣ Human Footprint Amplified: Improper land management, 80% unfiltered wastewater, and burning of fossil fuels are intensifying alarming symptoms like increased water temperature, upper ocean acidification, reduction of the micro-layer and relentless rise of global sea levels. Our actions are not just contributing; they are accelerating the deterioration of our oceans..! 4️⃣ Threat to Marine Life and Species Extinction: Warm-water corals, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows are on the front lines of vulnerability to global warming. The potential consequences for marine ecosystems and carbon sequestration are nothing short of devastating. The micro-layer not just produces a large part of the Ocean Oxygen but it is critical in the processes behind the Ocean capability to absorb 30% of CO2. Reduced micro-layer->more CO2 left in atmosphere—>more global warming. It is critical to safeguard biodiversity and address these vulnerabilities to safeguard the intricate web of ocean life. 5️⃣ Unlocking Climate Solutions with BlueFinance: Access to funds is a crucial obstacle in scaling up climate solutions. The report underscores the urgency of collaboration between the public and private sectors to pave the way for substantial climate mitigation strategies. Ocean Community supports a debate on the drawbacks of too much top-level focus on E+S+G targets. We advocate for increased targeted environmental investments to combat climate change. Combining social and governmental impacts with environmental metrics may be counterproductive to critically important single G-s. Thriving coastal communities supported by Ocean abundance offer better opportunities for equitable health and wealth distribution and reduction of climate migration. For this we need to protect Ocean health. (#nosocialjusticeonadeadplanet). SDG 14 - Life Under Water, received only approx 2% of total SDG funding to date. This highlights the need for strategic allocation of resources and strong Ocean Stewardship. 🤝 Let's join forces to protect our ocean. Spread awareness and ignite conversations about the urgent need for ocean action! 🌊💦💥🌱 #OceanAction is #ClimateAction #SaveOurOceans #IPCCReport #SustainableFuture #OceanInnovation #oceancommunity

Proud that Sweden, US and other countries took the lead today - of expected approx 60 countries - and ratified/signed the #BBNJ High Seas Biodiversity treaty! Almost two decades in the making and agreed during the Swedish EU Presidency, set out to protect biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction and sustainable use of marine resources. The treaty is a historical achievement showing country’s can (!) work together for the betterment of One world 🌎 and One Ocean🌊💙 and a healthy climate.💚It is about time. The agreement includes: 🌊Marine genetic resources (MGRs), including the fair and equitable sharing of benefits 🌊Area-based management tools (ABMTs), including marine protected areas (MPAs) to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. 🌊Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) 🌊Capacity building and transfer of marine technology (CB&TMT).

Seaweed farming allows us to revolutionize how we think about ocean health, climate mitigation, and food security. Seaweed doesn’t need fertilizer, pesticides, or farmland to grow, and its production has doubled over the last decade, resulting in an annual harvest of over 30 million tons and creating a market worth $11.8 billion. In the fight against the global decline in biodiversity and climate change, the preservation and growth of global seaweed forests are vital since they pack a mighty punch — estimates point to seaweed accounting for nearly 200 million tonnes of CO2 sequestered each year, while providing crucial habitat for marine biodiversity and building up resilience for fish stocks. However, the world’s wild seaweed forests face various challenges, such as pollution, overharvesting, coastal developments, heatwaves, and ocean warming. By safeguarding seaweed forests, we provide support to marine life and the economies of coastal communities. Additionally, we invest in a powerful solution for biodiversity and climate preservation, all while ensuring the conservation of fisheries resources. WWF is working with organizations, scientists, and local communities on the frontlines of protecting and growing seaweed forests to support their reforestation. One organization that we are particularly proud to work closely with is SeaForester, which is on a mission to “restore the forgotten forests in our ocean.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEYSbf0sDx0 SeaForester's biodiversity and climate solution is innovative, and we will walk you through how it’s transforming underwater ecosystems. SeaForester first begins with the seeding of small stones with seaweed spores. After these stones spend time in a nursery on land, where conditions mimic the local aquatic environments, the seeded stones are scattered from a boat into the ocean. There, they continue to grow, forming a new seaweed forest in just a few years. This process of seeding seaweed spores onto stones, called ‘Green Gravel,’ is a low-cost and scalable solution to reforesting the ocean’s seaweed forests, and it doesn’t need divers or technical equipment. To maximize the results of their biodiversity and climate solution, SeaForester is also active in educating the broader public and involving coastal communities in their projects. Together with their partners at MARE-IPLeiria, they continue to optimize their solution and make it ready for application to other coastal regions worldwide. Last year, SeaForester was a finalist in The Earthshot Prize, which their nomination focused on reviving the Earth’s oceans. Click here to read more about SeaForester’s profile in The Earthshot Prize competition. WWF is proud to be supporting SeaForester’s work. Supporting two SeaForester projects has allowed us to witness firsthand their transformative influence on the environment and local communities, leaving us with a deep appreciation. More about WWF’s work with Farmed Seaweed: As a result of generous support from partners, WWF is investing in innovative companies focusing on scaling seaweed production to meet conservation and societal challenges. To fully capitalize on the economic and climate benefits, they need to be scaled up in a big way. WWF’s Senior Director of Impact Investing and Ecosystems Services, Aquaculture, Paul Dobbins, came out of retirement to work on this important task of scaling seaweed sectors around the North Atlantic rim and the Eastern Pacific. You can read about Paul Dobbin and his work here.

Thank you for all water love and support. 97% of Earth’s water is in the Ocean. It absorbs excess heat and carbon, produces oxygen and protein, enables transportation and recreation, and fresh water through desalination. We only have 10 years to stop Ocean acidification - if not the ecosystem will collapse in 25 years. Ocean Community therefore urges all governments to act against the CO2 emissions.

Three of the UK's biggest banks, NatWest, Lloyd's and Standard Chartered, are showing the way and have ruled out funding deep sea mining, with many more major companies now turning their backs on plans to mine the seafloor. A total of £2.28 trillion in potential funding is as result now off-limits to deep sea mining companies!! Ocean Community friends, Blue Marine say: “With growing momentum amongst responsible lenders and businesses rejecting deep sea mining, it’s time for the UK Government to show global leadership and back a moratorium on the practice before it is too late."(Jonny Hughes, Policy Manager at Blue Marine.) Ocean Community stands with WWF and call on the country to halt Deep Sea Bed Mining plans. Ocean Community instead urges Norway to ratify the High Seas Treaty immediately. Norway’s DeepSeaBedMining plan is one of the worst environmental decision the country has ever made. The government’s plan to open an ocean area larger than the UK to mining in the Arctic comes only A DAY AFTER countries – including NORWAY – officially adopted a HighSeasTreaty! A wealthy country takes the lead in an area where most environmental organizations are united in skepticism against any further progression. No green without blue. No life without both.

The Norwegian government proposed opening its waters to deep-sea mining. The areas to be opened are in the Greenland Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea and cover an area larger than the UK (280,000 km2). They justify it by saying that "we need minerals to succeed with the green transition". But should this be at the expense of the oceans/seas' biodiversity? Well, I don't think so! The Norwegian parliament is set to debate the proposal in the autumn of 2023, so let's put pressure on them! Let’s face it; Climate crisis has an even more evil twin; Ocean Acidification! The ocean is our biggest ally against climate change and we are destroying its superpowers. Today, however, presents hope! Historic agreement adopted for conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in over two-thirds of the ocean in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Just remember…#wedonthavetime. We have 10 years to restore our Ocean to full capacity. If not? 15 years later collapse of the one system that can save us. Push push push for ratification! 60 countries need to sign asap to make this treaty come into force, and this means; Fashion industry pushed to a stop on the unsustainable overproduction of micro plastic clothes; Shipping Industry pushed to stop the toxins from huge burning of fossil fuels; Agriculture (specifically meat industry) stop iff toxic runoffs (and that industry uses 70% of all fresh water on earth), 80% of waste water is released without filtering - ask your local community what they are doing! Finally, the fishing industry…we are not impressed. This industry does not seem to care about regeneration. However, if continued, 3 billion people will lose their source of protein in 25 years. Alarming? Yes. We need to recognize the huge importance of the Ocean. If we save it - it will save us. nogreenwithoutblue 💙💚 https://www.un.org/sg/en/content/sg/note-correspondents/2023-06-19/note-correspondents-press-release-historic-agreement-adopted-for-conservation-and-sustainable-use-of-biodiversity-over-two-thirds-of-the-ocean

Yes! The ocean is taking a big hit protecting us and absorbing the excess heat from global warming. Acidification as result is horrific for its habitat and ability to produce oxygen, decarbonize and sequester carbon. The ocean species are fundamental to our survival. We kill them with microplastics, toxic run-offs, chemical release, overfishing, carbon pollution and the majority of household-wastewater is not filtered before released. There is no 💚GREEN without 💙BLUE.

There required multi-sectoral policies for sustainable use of coastal and marine resources, together with proper financing as well as right use of relevant technologies. There were experiences of conflicts and lack of understanding as prevail in certain communities on use of such resources e.g. fisheries, ocean wildlife, shipping as well as utilization of offshore renewable energy resources. Hence, strong need of informed decisions felt essential in the same context by involving citizen and stakeholders. Also, scientific and technological innovations highly indispensable in global observing systems, both for in situ and in satellite observations. There were incidences of catastrophic events and economic losses due to recurrent extremes in weather conditions. Since ocean and coastal areas are significant for livelihood and other economic activities, there necessitated ocean finance schemes which potentially could provide scientific solutions, to be sustained in the long term.

The sight of a whale is impressive, but they seem alien to us due to their size and scale: the family of whales, cetaceans, includes some of the largest animals ever to live on the earth, such as the Sperm Whale and 16 species of Baleen Whales. Also, they live in unknown ocean depths and travel nearly the entire world. In the past, these giants were common, but this changed about 3,100 years ago when people in Spain started hunting Right Whales. Whales were sold for their meat, oil, and baleen, which filters plankton. Over the next 1,000 years, whale populations were reduced by as much as 90%, causing some species to become endangered and close to being extinct. Also, climate change has caused some whale species to shift their living habits, such as Humpback, Blue, Fin, and Sperm whales, and others to change their migrations. These trends are life-changing to the whales, but also indirectly life-changing for us, as whales play important roles in the stabilization of oceans and in turn, the stabilization of the world's climates. In this article, I explain why whales are critical for our planet and they are important to protect: https://medium.com/@ErlijnG/world-changers-4-reasons-why-whales-and-their-poop-are-important-59377db7a1e3

The Happy Seacucumber has come up with a circular aquaculture solution to save the threatened Sea Cucumber. Increased demand in Asian markets for wild-caught Mediterranean sea cucumbers has led to a dramatic decline of the natural population. The happy seacucumber farm in the pristine Greek waters will provide a sustainable alternative and contribute actively to their conservation in the wild. This is needed because sea cucumbers play a vital role in marine ecosystems. As the ‘oceans cleaners’ they absorb excess nutrients, keeping corals and seagrass meadows healthy. This is why the Happy Seacucumber will farm them near existing fish farms, turning their waste into a climate-friendly source of animal protein packed with health benefits.

Interesting, I have always loved sea cucumbers, it would never come to my mind to eat them

Dear Sarah, I'm glad you mention this because I had precisely the same feeling when I started out and it took some soul searching.... especially considering I'm a vegetarian. My main motivation to start farming seacucumbers is because I feel really bad for them to be taken from the wild, sometimes even illegally. Farming them will also enable us to support conservation organizations in restocking, and increase awareness on the importance of seacucumbers for the marine ecosystem. At the same time there are more and more fish farms in Med, and their nutrient outflow is a real problem. It seems a win-win, because our farm neutralises these outflows. So considering the positive impact of our happy seacucumbers I would probably consider eating them before any other type of animal.

@zairah_khan Thanks for your answer! It's great if one species can limit the impact of others
