Edgar Hertwich, Professor in Industrial Ecology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, has concluded that more intensive use of floor space, such as multi-family homes, is the most effective strategy to reduce the massive emissions from the construction sector, which today makes up 40 percent of all material use, measured in carbon footprint. ”The most effective strategy, that we could follow in our work, is to have a more intensive use of the buildings. Less floor space per capita”, he said in his keynote speech at Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero. In his speech, Edgar Hertwich proposed seven strategies of material efficiency that could save 35% of the emissions from the residential sector by 2050. Connecting to the Professor's speech, @oskarstorm, @perklevnas, and @arnaudmarquis shared their material efficiency solutions to rethink the built environment: wood facades, recycled floors, and prevention of material overuse. https://youtu.be/2I8jWAEGS-s Listen to the whole panel, and learn about material efficiency strategies and other solutions to a more sustainable way of living in the material world: https://youtu.be/_sDwFw-899g

Thanks Kyle Wiens for @iFixit
Where other people see a pile of waste, Pär Larshans, Head of Sustainability at Ragn-Sells, sees a potential resource. Quite often a resource that could be good for both business and the planet. ”There is enormous business potential in treating waste as a resource and creating a circular economy”, he said in his keynote speech at the ”Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero”. Pär emphasized that creating circular material loops is crucial to reach the ambitions in the Paris agreement, and he emphazised the need to change systems and legislations all over the world to allow and facilitate using waste as a resource. Listen to his speech and learn about a unique project with the potential to reduce 400 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. How? Well, by turning waste into a resource. https://youtu.be/z8_TQwieoNQ

Did you know that only 1% of used clothing is being recycled back into textiles? Gwen Cunningham, who leads @circle_economy's Textiles Programme, knows more about this than many others. In her keynote presentation at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero, she talked about the efforts to get away from the take-make-waste business model, and bring about sustainable change. “Our mission is to achieve a zero-waste industry./.../Raw materials need to be recyclable, renewable, and need to be crafted in continued recirculation,” she said. In the panel that followed, four experts presented their proposals and perspectives on how to change the industry. @eva_karlsson_houdini, CEO of Houdini Sportswear, talked about the need to design for circularity; the material scientist @erikperzon explained the SIPTEX-project, the world’s first automatic large-scale textile sorting plant in Malmö; @lizricketts, co-founder and director of Or Foundation explained her work in environmental justice, education and fashion development; and the Chief Ecosystem Officer at @Vivobarefoot, @galahadclark, emphasized the importance of manufacturing sustainable footwear. “The technologies are there to switch this around to circular, already today, and it has been the case for maybe a decade at least. So, It's just a matter of willpower and guts to change,” pointed out Eva Karlsson from @houdini_sportswear Watch the whole segment and learn more about sustainable fashion for the future: https://youtu.be/OBFZmOeQ5dM?t=14694

Thank you @gwencunningham for a great keynote presentation! This panel was very enlightening on the subject of fashion and circularity.
Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, wrapped up the Exponential Climate Action Summit III by pointing out that COP 26 must be the moment where all members states agree to end all new investments in coal power plants. ”The most low-hanging fruit to decide upon in Glasgow, which must happen, is to have an agreement to end coal. This must be the moment where we say goodbye to yesterday’s provision of energy.” Johan also proposed 5 concrete goals for COP 26 to secure the natural carbon sinks and help us remain within the planetary boundaries. ”What we choose to put on our plates every day, what we produce, and how we produce it, is a fantastic arena for tackling humanity’s greatest challenges.” Those are the words of Kjørven, Senior Director of Strategy EAT Foundation, spoken at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero. “Change is in the air, I hope you can sense it, and I hope you will join us in shifting the collective mindset when it comes to food, planet and health,” said Olav Kjørven in his keynote speech. How to bring about a massive dietary and food production shift? He mentioned that just as people need to eat differently, governments have to act on policy changes and businesses have to finance good food. In the following panel discussion, several experts shared initiatives and knowledge around circular and sustainable food production. @iainstirling talked about regenerative agriculture and the production of the world’s first carbon-negative gin, and @timelfring of his aquaponic farm that saves 95 percent of wastewater. @manzoorqadir spoke of the enormous challenges – and great opportunities – in wastewater treatment, and @saramarjanizadeh about restoring degraded land in Central Asia. Owen Gaffney is the co-founder of the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, an accredited partner of the United Nations Race to Zero. In his presentation during the Exponential Climate Action Summit III, Owen pointed out the need to push entire sectors to halve emissions every decade, in order to limit global warming to 1,5 degrees Celsius and stay within the planetary boundaries. ”The initiative is about bringing together the leading companies that will transform, disrupt and innovate our way along that pathway”, he said. He also described the 1.5°C Business Playbook, produced by the initiative, which contains solid guidelines for companies of all sizes to set targets, strategy, and actions to align with the 1.5°C and net-zero ambition. Very important
@fredrikaklaren, head of sustainability at @Polestar, pointed out the importance of electric vehicles in the transitioning of the transport industry. She also talked about Polestar's aim to produce a carbon-neutral car by 2030. "This is about future proofing our businesses, we are in a transition which is a fourth industrial revolution which will be driven by sustainability and digitalization" Transparency promoting behavioural changes was another theme that Fredrika raised, "We declare the carbon footprints of the cars we produce, the Polestar 2 rolls out with a footprint of 26 tons of CO2 and we really want to make sure that out consumers are aware that they come with a carbon debt and know how to have it stay as low as possible" During the panel discussion about mobility at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero, @carlygilbertpatrick carried the theme of transparency and pointed out that the world is in a mobility disruption and, although there is no perfect solution, giving consumers options is key. The panelist @robinchase, founder of @Zipcar, agreed with Carly Gilbert-Patrick and highlighted the importance of making space in cities for other options than cars. “The future of the transport industry is only electric. You could see a huge transformation from now to a few years ago.” said @owengaffney during his keynote speech at the “Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero, Watch the whole discussion and learn more about sustainable mobility: https://youtu.be/EdNpveAJN64

Very important speech
As Lead of the Circular Jobs Initiative at @circle_economy Esther Goodwin Brown guides governments and businesses to maximize employment opportunities offered by the circular economy. “Instead of just one person being employed to incinerate ten thousand tons of used goods, like in the linear economy, re-using the same amount of materials could create 296 jobs in a circular economy”, she said during her keynote presentation at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III. In the panel discussion that followed, @pernillajonsson from Ericsson, @henrikbystrom from Microsoft, and @sachaghiglione from Prime Computer highlighted the importance of digitalization to transform work in the circular economy. Carly Gilbert-Patrick, leader of @UNEP’s team for active mobility, digitalization and mode integration, highlighted that sometimes the most simple solutions are right in front of us. “One of the things that we can really do, which is so straightforward and doesn't cost much, is protect and promote active mobility, walking and cycling. It has to be part of the solution.” During the panel discussion about mobility at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero, she said that the world is in a mobility disruption and, although there is no perfect solution, giving consumers options is key. Greatly deserving it! A topic that, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to and thinking that, not everyone in my world could afford a car, other options could encourage users here to make the switch.
The numbers are staggering: Almost half of our climate impact and 90 percent of our water scarcity issues are linked to the way we extract resources and produce goods and food. So how do we change this? Lars Lindén, CEO of the waste management and recycling company Ragn-Sells, argues that we need to stop treating waste as something without value, and instead start seeing it as a key source for raw material. In his keynote presentation at the Exponential Climate Action Summit III – Circularity and the Race to Zero, Lars said: ”If we are serious about creating a sustainable society, we have to use raw material we already have extracted, over and over again, as often as possible.” Watch the presentation, and hear Lars Lindén describe how Ragn-Sells is transforming its business to become a raw material producer – and what systemic changes are needed to make it happen. https://youtu.be/OBFZmOeQ5dM?t=2777

What a champ!
Voluntary carbon markets enable companies to purchase carbon credits from activities that reduce emissions elsewhere. It is an opportunity for countries with carbon assets to finance their green transition, and for certain industries to move towards carbon neutrality. To avoid greenwashing and the risk of having companies using voluntary carbon markets as an excuse for not bringing down their own emissions, the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) was launched earlier this year. VCMI aims to ensure carbon offsets are underpinned by real actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to help developing countries access climate finance generated by the market. ”The Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative is here to try to bring governments, civil society, business, finance, everybody together to establish the rules, the guardrails necessary for us to make sure that within a voluntary carbon market, claims can actually be trusted. And that finance can actually flow into the pockets of those who would need it in order to protect nature”, said Rachel Kyte, co-chair of VCMI, in her keynote speech during the Exponential Climate Action Summit III.
