Stockholm Exergi recently made it possible for its district heating customers to purchase negative emissions from the company’s future BECCS facility. Alongside their commitments to reduce emissions, more and more companies are seeing a need for negative emissions to reach net-zero targets or to further reduce their carbon footprint. Through their purchases, customers are simultaneously making additional contributions to the financing of Stockholm Exergi’s BECCS plant, which is scheduled to be operational in 2026. The offering is available for all district heating customers who wish to purchase more than 1,000 tons of negative emissions per year over ten years. The first companies to sign letters of intent with Stockholm Exergi are Heba, AMF Fastigheter and Akademiska Hus. Following the IPCC’s AR6 report from 2022 there is a global consensus that reducing emissions are not sufficient to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreements. In addition, extensive efforts are needed to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere using various ways of achieving so-called negative emissions. According to the IPCC report, BECCS plays a prominent role in securing these necessary negative emissions. – It is extremely exciting that we at Stockholm Exergi, together with our district heating customers, can contribute to realizing one of the most important new tools to curb global warming. District heating is a unique, shared resource that not only heats the people of Stockholm, but also ensures security of the local electricity supply. Now, district heating and its users can facilitate a way for companies and Sweden to reach their climate goals, says Stockholm Exergi’s CEO Anders Egelrud. More and more companies are becoming aware of climate challenges and have in recent years set targets to reach net-zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement or earlier, often as early as 2030. Achieving net-zero requires companies to reduce emissions in their value chain as much as possible and then neutralize the remainder with precisely negative emissions. – The fact that our district heating customers see the need for negative emissions is very important. What we are seeing now is the beginning of a new market for negative emissions that will be central to financing BECCS facilities such as ours. If we resolve the financing and all the necessary regulations are in place, we expect to be able to take a decision on the investment in the first quarter of 2024, says Stockholm Exergi’s CEO Anders Egelrud. I would like to give Stockholm Exergi and its CEO Anders Egelrud a big Climate Love. He answered a Climate Warning previously given to his company on this platform by joining our live broadcast from Egypt, COP27. He listened to our communities argument carefully and did a u-turn regarding advocating for burning more fossil fuels. He also had some good explanations we all needed to hear. The transition to a fossil-free society needs to get everyone on board. This is true climate leadership. Both listening and doing the right thing. After the event, he even signed our We Can Do It campaign. Fantastic! Keep up the good work, Sthlm Exergi team! If the new government of Sweden wants to, Stockholm Exergi are ready to start up their old 300 mega watt oil pan in order to keep prices down on electricity. They claim it would be cleaner than German coal power - but I don’t think this is any good idea. There must be other solutions. Do you agree with me? This company claims it wants to help making Stockholm a climate-positive city. Sorry to disappoint you guys, but burning oil is not gonna get you there.
•

Difficult one. If its less carbon intensive than German coal powered electricity and for a limited time only during the crisis then maybe. However, Sweden is made up of 6 grids, some have very low electricity prices so a better idea would be to link these together and share the electricity around.

@nick_d It is not difficult at all. We can save energy instead. Calculation has shown that if we save 5% electricity in Europe we will have no more high electricity prices. 5%!! How hard can it be? Stockholm Exergi could Advocate for that instead of lobbying about being allowed to burn oil! We are talking about a company that previously had very high climate ambitions. Their goal is to make Stockholm the world's first climate-positive capital in 2025! That goal will not be possible if they start burning oil! https://www.stockholmexergi.se/klimatpositiva/

Once wastewater has been filtered by Stockholm Exergi's treatment plant, converted into biogas, and dewatered, large amounts of sewage sludge are formed. The sewage sludge contains desired and finite substances but also excessive concentrations of environmental toxins and heavy metals that should not remain in the ecosystem. Through combustion, toxins can be removed. In a collaborative project, Stockholm Exergi develops methods for treating sewage sludge and studies the possibility of returning the nutrients that remain after incineration to agriculture. Since 1987, Stockholm residents are heating themselves thanks to Stockholm Exergi recovering the heat from the treated wastewater of showers, toilets, and drains from all across the capital. The heat generated this way is enough to keep about 100,000 apartments warm all through winter and heat quite a few additional hot showers. Stockholm Exergi is exploring the possibility of making the Swedish capital’s district heating the world’s first to become carbon negative. As a first step, the company this spring will close its last coal-fired boiler for power and heat production at the Värtaverket combined-cycle plant in Stockholm. The company is now investigating whether a carbon capture system (CCS) could be utilized at Värtaverket, which would turn the plant carbon negative. Based on the pilot in progress, bio-CCS is also a cost-effective alternative for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the company claims. Since we started testing CO2-capture through Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (bio-CCS) in 2019, we have received positive feedback and seen a massive interest in the technology. We are happy that so many have showed interest in our work and we are sharing our results with other companies and academia, in order to be a positive driving force in the development of negative emissions methods, something that is vital to halting climate change. Research and testing was successful during it’s first year and in winter/spring 2021 the research plant is being expanded and improved to enable additional testing. It is an important step towards a full scale plant for capturing biogenic carbon dioxide and thus achieve negative emissions. One of the things that we will be adding to the research is the opportunity to simulate flue gas from other types of facilities, from waste incineration plants to paper mills. The plan for us at Stockholm Exergi is to continue investigating operational circumstances and optimize towards lower energy consumption and lower operating costs. We will also continue to accumulate knowledge about the technology in order to put a much larger full scale bio-CCS unit in operation. The Bio-CCS research plant, v.2.0 - Longer absorption and desorbtion columns, from approx. 1 meter to 25 meter. - Improved access for sampling and measuring inside the absorption column. - Faster analysis of samples through automisation, making it possible to run more tests in less time. - Recirculation of flue gas in order to vary carbon dioxide levels in the process and simulate different flue gas composition. pH-measuring for better understanding of reaction speed regarding the effect of pH on carbon dioxide and potassium carbonate. - A number of improvements in settings for measuring, steering and controlling the process.

Will this happen instead of closing the coal plant? If so, wouldn't it be cheaper to replace this cola plant with a renewable heating plant instead? Transporting and storing the waste from a CCS-unit causes extra work compared to other solutions, so it fees like it should be a last resort if it's possible to remove emissions directly at the source. Using CCS to capture directly from the atmosphere is another thing. But in this case, perhaps replacing the emissions at the source would be a better solution?

To get the CO2 to the North Sea from Stockholm, it would be liquefied, and the fluid shipped to Bergen, Norway, a Fortum press official told Recharge.

Big climate Love to Stockholm Exergi and politicians in Stockholm for closing Swedens last coal plant before deadline. Stockholm Exergi's board decides to close the last coal boiler in the coal-fired power plant KVV6 in Värtahamnen. This means that the alignment decision from 2017 on the phase-out of the coal to 2022 will be implemented as early as 2020. The coal-fired power plant is a major source of emissions, and is Stockholm's single largest source of fossil emissions. Closing the coal-fired power plant has been one of Stockholm's most important environmental issues.
