Dr Fergus Green, University College London, on climate justice and climate change
https://lnkd.in/daej7QSY
Haga Initiative has interviewed Dr Fergus Green, lecturer in Political Theory & Public Policy in the Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy at University College London, UCL, about climate justice and a just transition. - Economic inequality creates power imbalances that enable corporations and business elites to expand carbon-intensive production and obstruct climate policy, and it empowers the wealthy to live unsustainably carbon-intensive lifestyles that set standards of consumption to which those on lower incomes aspire. At the other end of the income distribution, poverty, un(der)employment, and financial insecurity leave people fearful of ambitious climate policies that threaten to erode their purchasing power or deprive them of decent work, says Dr Fergus Green. Ny rapport om cirkulära affärsmodeller för ett starkare Norden
https://lnkd.in/enFPs__y
This morning the Haga Initiative hosted the webinar Circular Business Models – Building a Stronger and More Resilient Nordic Region in the New Geopolitical Landscape and released the report "Circular Business Models - Nordic opportunities and challenges in the new geopolitical landscape". The report identifies opportunities for the Nordic region to take global leadership in the transition to circular economy. The report highlights that leadership requires a joint strategy and increased cooperation within the Nordic region. - There is a large untapped potential for the Nordic region to take the lead in the global transition to circular economy. Circular economy is also important for decreased dependence on global supply chains that are easily disrupted by geopolitical crises. But to take the lead globally, a common Nordic strategy for circular economy is required, says Nina Ekelund, Executive Director of the Haga initiative. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/enFPs__y

Webinar: Circular Business Models – Building a stronger and more resilient Nordic region
The potential for a more circular economy in the Nordic Region is significant, but unlocking that potential takes cooperation, innovation and policy reform. ...
https://lnkd.in/db_uw2rN
Last week, the Haga Initiative organised a webinar about the role of circular economy and circular business models in the light of the new geopolitical landscape and how actors in the Nordic region can work together for increased circularity. Keynote speaker, Terhi Lehtonen, State Secretary at Ministry for the Environment, Finland, highlighted the links between energy security and circular economy: “Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine has shown us that green transition and replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy is crucial for our security. We need and we want to increase our energy independence as we move to climate neutrality. Circular economy will also be key to ensure that energy production is sustainable.” Joss (Jocelyn) Blériot from Ellen MacArthur Foundation, shared his insights on the potential of reducing transport-related emissions by applying circular economy principles: “If we apply circular economy in terms of design, repurposing and recycling at a high quality, to steel, cement, aluminium, plastics and food, we can remove half of the 45 percent of emissions by 2045, which is equivalent to taking all of the transport related emissions out of the equation.” Thank you to our outstanding participants: Terhi Lehtonen, State Secretary at Ministry for the Environment, Finland Joss (Jocelyn) Blériot, Institutions, Governments and Cities, Ellen MacArthur Foundation Janine Alm Ericson, Member of the Swedish Parliament, Swedish Green Party Jytte Guteland, Member of the Swedish Parliament, Social Democratic Party Jessica Polfjärd, Member of the European Parliament, Moderate Party Claes Johansson, Director Sustainable Development, Lantmännen Sara Davidsson, Manager Environmental Permits and Sustainability, Stena Recycling Åsa Domeij, Head of environment and social responsibility, Axfood David O'Brock, Commercial Director, REEtec Göran Nyström, Senior Advisor, Ovako Elin Bergman, COO Cradlenet and Co-funder & Managing Partner Nordic Circular Hotspot Ann-Charlotte Mellquist, Senior Researcher, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden Nina Ekelund, Executive Director, Haga Initiative Malin Redmo, Project Manager, Haga Initiative If you missed the livestream, you can watch it here: https://lnkd.in/db_uw2rN

With Beleco, customers can rent furniture instead of buying. When customers no longer need the furniture, it comes back to Beleco, and is reused again and again – instead of ending up in a landfill. Instead of Beleco buying the products, manufacturers and brands themselves list their furniture on the site and continue to own it, creating incentives to create better products that last longer. The Swedish Environment Institute’s calculation shows that Beleco’s business model will save at least 2,000,000 tonnes of CO2 before the year 2030. SWEDEN’S LARGEST EMITTERS WILL BECOME NEGATIVE EMITTERS Sweden’s 20 largest emitters account for close to one third of Sweden’s total emissions. According to a recent report by the Haga Initiative, the 20 largest emitters in Sweden will become small emitters as well as contribute to large negative emissions. Whether they will successfully transform their business and reduce their emissions, will be a central aspect to reach the Swedish climate targets. The study shows the potential that these companies hold to reduce Sweden’s territory-based emissions. Sweden has a target to reach net-zero emissions by 2045. - The report shows which ambitions the largest emitters have to reduce their direct emissions. The impact of these ambitions could potentially become even larger when it affects other companies in the value chain as a result, says Nina Ekelund, Executive Director The full executive summary of the report in English can be found on the Haga Initiative’s website here: https://www.hagainitiativet.se/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/221103-Rapport-Sveriges-storsta-utslappare.pdf We are curious, what is happening in the private sector in your country?

NEW REPORT: 300 % MORE SWEDISH COMPANIES ALIGN THEIR TARGETS WITH THE 1.5-DEGREE TARGET For the third year in a row, Hagainitiativet has examined which of the 128 largest Swedish companies on the stock exchange have goals of halving their emissions in 10 years, in accordance with the 1.5-degree target. The report shows: ✅ 85 out of 128 companies (66 percent) have clear targets to halve emissions by 2032 in their operations and have thus received a green light in scopes 1 and 2. This is a clear improvement, in 2020 only one out of five companies received a green light, and in 2022 two out of three companies received a green light in this category. That's a 300 percent increase! 🎉 ✅ 47 out of 128 companies (37 percent) have targets to halve their emissions every decade in the entire value chain and have thus received a green light in all three scopes. We are happy to see more companies ramping up their climate ambitions and pushing policy and other businesses in the right direction. In times like these, we need more climate leadership. Sometimes roasting of coffee beans does not go exactly as planned, and is an example of when perfectly good coffee beans cannot be sold as intended. This is where the sustainability initiative Räddat Kaffe comes into the picture. By using different types of coffee that otherwise risked being wasted, Löfberg’s coffee experts created unique blends that were sold at Circle K stations around the country. An unnecessary waste of the earth’s resources could be avoided which is good for the environment, and Circle K could offer its customers coffee with completely unique flavors and aromas. First year of Räddat Kaffe: 🦋 In total, 26 tonnes of coffee beans have been saved from being wasted 🦋 The investment ensures a saving of approx. 120 tonnes of CO2 🦋 The use of pesticides is reduced by 200 kg 🦋 An area equivalent to 48 football pitches is converted to sustainable production If you want to read other good examples of circular economy, go to https://www.hagainitiativet.se/en/100-exempel-pa-cirkular-ekonomi/ Have a great day! ************************************************* **** This is part of the Haga Initiative's campaign 100 Good Examples of Circular Economy. Wind power mills are 85-90 percent recyclable, but the blades largely consist of thermoset composite that is difficult to separate. The industry thus shares a recycling challenge together with, among others, the boat and aviation industries. The European trade body has previously called for landfill bans to speed up the transition, and now several manufacturers have launched 100% recyclable wind turbine blades. GHG EMISSION DISCLOSURE 2021: THE HAGA INITIATIVE REPORTS SIGNIFICANT EMISSION REDUCTIONS AND INCREASES AMBITIONS UNTIL 2030 Today the English version of the Haga Initiative's GHG emission disclosure for 2021 is released. The disclosure presents a total emissions reduction of 696,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in one year for the member companies. This corresponds to an average of 42 percent per company. Starting in 2021, the Haga Initiative raises the ambitions further with new climate targets until 2030, covering the entire value chain. This implies an increased responsibility and requires a new approach with a new set of challenges. - The Haga Initiative's GHG emission disclosure shows that it is possible to make a difference. The member companies have made major efforts to reduce emissions in their own operations. Thus, it is critical to put a greater focus on influencing the entire value chain. This is important because, on average, 70 percent of the total emissions take place in the value chain, says Nina Ekelund, Executive director of the Haga Initiative. Rock shafts, which are used to transport ore, require reinforcement and are made with shaft concrete. Previously, LKAB Berg & Betong has had access to and used GGBS, a residual product from steel production, to replace part of the cement in the concrete recipe and thereby reduce the product’s carbon dioxide emissions. Now, the first large-scale test is being carried out with a completely cement-free concrete, a recipe that contains no cement at all. In this recipe, GGBS is used together with another residual product from LKAB’s own production, waste lime, which has been used for flue gas purification and is normally landfilled. Together with gray rock, which is used as an aggregate, the concrete mixture is completely circular with low carbon dioxide emissions. Tele2's Mobile is a circular service offering leased hardware and services. Since 2021, Tele2 offers the service to its large corporate customers and today 1 in 5 mobile phones are sold as part of this leasing service. The circular service enables a closed cycle for reuse and recycling for mobile phones - more than 99 percent of the devices are returned, of which 95 percent then can be repaired and reused and the remaining ones recycled. Each reused phone saves about 50 kg of carbon dioxide, corresponding to the production of a new unit. Once wastewater has been filtered by Stockholm Exergi's treatment plant, converted into biogas, and dewatered, large amounts of sewage sludge are formed. The sewage sludge contains desired and finite substances but also excessive concentrations of environmental toxins and heavy metals that should not remain in the ecosystem. Through combustion, toxins can be removed. In a collaborative project, Stockholm Exergi develops methods for treating sewage sludge and studies the possibility of returning the nutrients that remain after incineration to agriculture. IKEA actively works with circularity. By 2030, IKEA aims to have all of their products being made from renewable or recycled materials, designed to be reused, resold, or recycled. In 2019, IKEA gave a second life to 47 million products that were being sold via bargain corners, while more than 9 million products were repackaged and returned to their shelves. Since the summer of 2020, IKEA has been buying back and reselling used IKEA furniture in their Circular Store. All furniture sold in the Circular Store is given a new chance instead of being unnecessarily thrown away. The furniture which can be found at the Circular Store either comes from expired collections or from customers who are reselling unwanted furniture back to IKEA. In the spring of 2021, IKEA introduced the Circular Store to all their department stores throughout Sweden, and the plan for the following years is to introduce it to all IKEA department stores throughout the world. I handed in one of our old desks at home to IKEA just yesterday, super smooth and practical! More stores should definitely do this.

Not for the rich. But for the wise. As the old IKEA pay off went, in my translation from Swedish.

Ovako’s production is based on using recycled steel as input material instead of iron ore. Steel can be recycled an infinite number of times while maintaining its properties. By basing the production on steel scrap, Ovako can create high-quality steel with a lower climate impact without compromising the quality. By closely matching the quality of the scrap with the steel grade planned to produce, the amount of virgin alloys needed is reduced. That is one reason why Ovako achieves a “cradle-to-gate” carbon footprint that is 80 percent lower than the global average. Great work, but I have heard that a lot of the steel is recycled abroad because of crazy Swedish regulations.
