https://www.change.org/bbc-climate-leadership-debate With both Labour and Conservative's considering watering down their climate policies, it's more important than ever for to show them that the public are watching and judging. The BBC hosting a climate policy debate in the run up to the next general election will not only show support for such policy, but provide a platform to scrutinise and engage in them.

Four US Senators are demanding the Justice Department use a "racketeering" law to sue @Chevron and other oil majors over their 50-year campaign to deceive the public about climate. From Steven Donzinger, a climate advocate and lawyer on a team that previously won a $9.5billion USD judgements against Chevron : "Such a case – which allows triple damages – could literally shut down the industry." https://www.sanders.senate.gov/press-releases/news-sanders-markey-merkley-and-warren-send-letter-to-attorney-general-urging-doj-to-bring-lawsuits-against-the-fossil-fuel-industry/

It's vital working people are also considered when implementing climate policy. To invest in training people that works in fossil fuels to work in renewables is common sense as they have so many transferable skills. "Labor union members at New York’s Ravenswood Generating Station are slated to become the first fossil fuel power plant workers in the United States to convert to operating offshore wind equipment in a landmark development toward a greener future" https://www.optimistdaily.com/2023/07/new-york-fossil-fuel-plant-pivots-to-offshore-wind-energy-and-takes-employees-with-them/

"The effort of reversing the curve of growth has been reached. That is a fact: we reversed the curve; deforestation isn't increasing," João Paulo Capobianco, the Environment Ministry's executive secretary, said during a presentation in Brasilia. https://www.euronews.com/green/2023/07/07/brazil-amazon-deforestation-drops-34-under-lula-but-el-nino-is-stoking-the-risk-of-forest-

Keep up the good work!Tropical forests are necessary for stabilizing our climate. Losing such forests greatly hampers Earth's ability to remove carbon from the atmosphere and avoid the worst effects of global warming.

The Conservative party is currently undergoing a leadership debate to decide the UKs next Prime Minister, we need to know they're up for the challenge. https://www.change.org/p/bbc-host-a-leadership-debate-on-the-climate-emergency-and-ecological-breakdown?recruiter=1272130360&recruited_by_id=af95b650-0cbd-11ed-bfd7-43d84e8f49a4&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=share_for_starters_page&utm_medium=twitter

The media is a vital channel of communication and so it'ld be a phenomenal tool for creating climate change awareness through such debates as suggested.

Ecologi have offset the world leader’s flight emissions, and plant two trees – one tree at one of their reforestation sites in Scotland, and one tree in their overseas sites – for every world leader representing a Party to the UNFCCC at COP26 – even the ones who didn’t show up. They've also sent them all a message to make COP26 count.

I'd like to apologise for posting this so many times in the last half an hour... I thought "save" would save the post as a draft, not actually post it 😣 Ecologi are also an incredible company that offer more than just a subscription to plant trees and fund carbon offsetting - they inspire collective action and have even held an online festival opened by Prince Charles. For those of you thinking to sign up, here's a cheeky referral link to plant more trees 😜 https://ecologi.com/jordan?r=5d5734967b3e56000fda86f7

30% of British consumers said that they buy a meal deal at least twice a week in 2018, that figure is expected to have grown since. That's millions every week. The meal deal consists of a main (normally a sandwich or pasta), a snack and a drink for £3. Depending on the selection you choose, the consumer can easily save £3, or 50%, on their meal. It's easy to see why this is so popular, not only do they save quite a bit of money, it's also very convenient to be able to pick up a meal like this. Concerns over the use of single use plastics in these deals have already been acknowledged by supermarkets, but there's another issue that seems to get little attention - a main and side often already cost more than £3, meaning the consumer is encouraged to buy a drink in order to pay less. This means 2 things: 1) Drinks, often in plastic bottles are often bought when they're not actually wanted. Leading to increased consumption. 2) Environmentally friendly habits, such as using reusable water bottles, are being actively discouraged, leading to a shift in consumer behaviour and attitudes. This can be easily mitigated by offering a cheaper meal deal. £2.95 for just a main and side would not only remove the financial incentive to buy that drink, but would also make the consumer think twice before they buy (similar to the successful 5p bag charge in the UK). https://www.talkingretail.com/news/industry-news/popularity-meal-deals-revealed-survey-21-05-2018/

Current carpooling apps and services run into common problems, including getting enough customers, customers being too dispersed geographically, and customers no longer engaging after a while due to lack of success and missing opportunities as a result. Carpooling can also be hampered by employees simply not knowing who they can carpool with. To tackle this, businesses themselves should take part in matching carpoolers. A service could be created that allows businesses to input employee data in bulk, meaning meaning all employees (that opt in) are are ready to be matched immediately. As an extension, this data could be shared between businesses within business parks or geographical clusters. This would not only provide a wealth of potential carpoolers - the vast amount of data that can be collected could also be used to influence public transport or inspire shuttle bus services.

Interesting idea! Have you heard of Blablacar? It's very big in France (and exists in other countries) and works very well (in my experience). It could be an idea for them to collaborate with big companies/business parks and implement carpooling with them. :)

Will the BBC really go against their funding and do that?
•
41 w
@munene_mugambi good question! The BBC is funded by license payers, so any household that wants to use BBC services pays around £150 (it's a bit more complicated than that), it's not funded by the government or any other organization. As part of their charter, they do need to remain politically neutral, but they also have a responsibility inform and educate the public and always host debates at General Elections as well as political shows throughout the year. Hosting the debate won't break their charter if they encourage all parties to get involved and listening a public demand for such debate shouldn't have much of an impact on license payers.
