Chevron opens new tab venture capital arm as its third fund to invest in renewable energy technologies with a $500 million commitment, as oil majors look to diversify their business in the face of pressure to reduce their emissions. Green investments can be an important part of recovery packages. To ensure we reach net zero emissions by 2050 and limit warming well below 2°C, the right policies and incentives must be created now to lock in action on climate change as a prerequisite for prosperity. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.energyconnects.com/news/renewables/2024/april/chevron-launches-500-million-fund-to-invest-in-clean-tech/&ved=2ahUKEwj4ppGzz8iFAxVD3AIHHfmDC_wQFnoECBkQAQ&usg=AOvVaw30KXIuEWdUMmgwBSchejFD

The era of “global boiling” is here, with many accusing Big Oil companies like Chevron, Shell, and BP of being major contributors toward climate catastrophe while exhibiting grotesque greed. However, Chevron’s CEO, Mike Wirth, disagrees with that narrative. In fact, Wirth thinks that the $300 billion oil and gas company is “selling a product that has changed the quality of life on this planet. For the better.” The 63-year-old industry veteran even described the company he has been leading since 2018 as “grounded in integrity and a deep belief in doing the right, t,hing” in an interview with the Financial Times, before brushing off critics and making a “real world” case for fossil fuels. Sometimes you wonder the guts that people have for the sake of profit over the people and their planet! Chevron New Energies has acquired a 78% stake in the Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES) project in Utah, which uses salt caverns to store hydrogen generated from renewable sources for electricity production during peak demand. The project is set to provide 300+ gigawatt-hours of clean energy to the US West, addressing fluctuations in wind and solar power. ACES has received a $504 million loan from the Department of Energy and is expected to be operational by mid-2025. Chevron's President highlights the potential of hydrogen as a versatile, low-carbon energy carrier with scalable storage capabilities. https://energydigital.com/renewable-energy/chevrons-hydrogen-investment-and-green-energy-endeavours

A carbon offset is characterized as having low environmental integrity, or being worthless, if it is linked to a forest or plantation or green energy project, including those involving hydroelectric dams, that doesn’t lead to additional greenhouse gas reductions, exaggerates benefits or risks emitting emissions, among other measures. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/may/24/chevron-carbon-offset-climate-crisis

The cited report is biased against our industry and paints an incomplete picture of Chevron’s efforts to advance a lower carbon future. Chevron supports offsets as part of that effort and views them as an important market-based approach to efficient carbon reductions. The majority of the offsets referred to in the report are compliance-grade offsets accepted by governments in the regions where we operate. A new investigation into Chevron’s climate pledge has found the fossil-fuel company relies on “junk” carbon offsets and “unviable” technologies, which do little to offset its vast greenhouse gas emissions and in some cases may actually be causing communities harm. Chevron, which reported $35.5bn in profits last year, is the US’s second-largest fossil fuel company with operations stretching from Canada and Brazil to the UK, Nigeria and Australia. fb-messenger://share?link=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fenvironment%2F2023%2Fmay%2F24%2Fchevron-carbon-offset-climate-crisis%3FCMP%3Dshare_btn_me&app_id=180444840287

The fossil fuel company Chevron relies on “junk” carbon offsets which are so bad, that in some cases they may actually cause communities harm, according a new report. Corporate Accountability, a transnational corporate watchdog, has published a new investigation that shows that 93% of the offsets Chevron bought as part of its climate targets between 2020 and 2022 were too environmentally problematic to be classified as anything other than worthless or junk. The report concludes that ”a major proportion of the schemes it’s investing in as part of its ‘net zero’ plan are linked to claims of local community abuse, environmental degradation, and/or may even be fueling further emissions. Almost all of the harm claimed to have been inflicted is on communities in the Global South.” Chevron – infamous for continuously lobbying against a green transition – has said that it “aspires” to achieve net zero upstream emissions by 2050. To do this, it is mostly relying on carbon offset schemes – environmental projects meant to cancel out its greenhouse gas emissions – and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. According to @the_guardian, Chevron reported $35.5bn in profits last year, and is the US’s second-largest fossil fuel company. The two largest U.S. oil companies are road testing renewable gasoline blends that they say could bring down emissions from conventional autos to levels competitive with electric vehicles (EVs). The fuels being promoted by Chevron Corp (CVX.N) and Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N), if made commercially available, potentially would extend the life of the gasoline market as part of the world's transition to cleaner fuels and electric vehicles. "We really believe there has to be alternatives for the light duty vehicle," Chevron President of Americas Products Andy Walz said at an event on Wednesday to road test the fuel. "Electrification is not the only answer." Chevron and Exxon disclosed in the past days test results from partnerships with automaker Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) using renewable gasoline partially made from soybeans or other non-fossil feedstocks. The blends could be used by the existing U.S. car fleet and gas stations, the oil majors have said. The tests came as U.S. President Joe Biden's administration last week proposed new pollution standards that could result in EVs accounting for up to two-thirds of U.S. light vehicle sales by 2032, according to government calculations. Bringing the cost of these renewable gasoline blends to affordable levels would depend on supportive government policies, Exxon said. Chevron added it could be years before the renewable fuel could be available in pumps. "We believe it is going to need government help to get up and running, and get scale," Walz said, referring to existing incentives such as those provided for biodiesel and renewable diesel. The most efficient way to bring scale to renewable gasoline would be through a carbon price, but not all jurisdictions are ready for it, said Balaji Krishnamurthy, Chevron's vice president of strategy and sustainability. The companies use different metrics to measure emissions. Exxon said its renewable gasoline could reduce emissions by as much as 75% compared to conventional gasoline on a life cycle basis. Chevron said its blend was more than 40% less carbon intensive than traditional gasoline, including the carbon intensity of manufacturing the vehicle.

I'm very sceptical of this renewable gasoline and use of biofuels such as soy which could lead to deforestation. During the recent energy conference CERAWeek in Houston, Texas, big oil companies like Chevron were – again – arguing for slowing down the transition to clean energy, and making sure oil and gas remain within the system for the foreseeable future. Mike Wirth, Chairman of the Board & CEO, Chevron Corporation, said: ”I think the issue of how we best move towards a lower-carbon energy system is getting re-framed. /…/ The discussion is moving to a more balanced state. I hope it is.” He then moved on to say that Chevron intends to increase oil production. ”We intend to grow energy supplies, both traditional energy and new energy, because demand for both continues to grow.” Mr. Wirth argued that a quick transition might lead to chaos, without mentioning with a single word the chaos that science has made clear awaits us all if we do not transition fast enough. During the conference, several other Big Oil CEOs also spoke enthusiastically about the bright future for oil. As Rick Muncrief, chief executive of Devon Energy, put it: “Our strategy is to stay as oily as we can for as long as we can.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amdio1QY52A Learn more: https://insideclimatenews.org/news/09032023/cera-week-houston-fossil-fuel-executives/

The Permian Basin of Texas has a small population and few (if any) local news outlets, and the Permian Basin is rich with oil and gas deposits. Chevron, smelling an opportunity, has bankrolled a San Francisco public relations firm (Singer Associates) to write "local" news stories on a Chevron-funded website, The Permian Proud. The Permian Proud's "news" is catered to news-starved communities in this oil-rich region that pair Chevron company language on local politics alongside seemingly ordinary news stories. Chevron's greenwashing becomes evident when you go to the Industry tab of the website. There you'll come across stories that praise solar energy projects in the Permian Basin that help to lower Chevron's "carbon intensity." The Permian Proud produces well-written greenwashing because it skillfully misleads people to believe that companies like Chevron are environmentally responsible. The Permian Proud knowingly neglects and does not report that Chevron actively undermines global emission targets. Chevron is taking full advantage of communities that do not have the resources to provide non-biased and accurate information about the climate crisis. The Permian Basin is a prime example of an American News-Desert 👨💻📰🏜 . News-deserts are communities with limited access to credible and comprehensive news and information that feeds democracy at the grassroots level. News-Deserts are also susceptible to climate misinformation. Chevron is preying on local Texan communities afflicted by the flight of journalists from the state, and Chevron is prioritizing rural Permian Basin counties without local news outlets. The Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism reports that 27 of Texas's 274 counties have ZERO news outlets. Of the remaining counties with news outlets, a little more than half have just one news source. The Permian Basin represents almost half of the Texan counties with no news outlets. Texas is also the 3rd highest number of journalists lost per capita since 2005, after California and New Jersey. All Americans need a reliable source of news that isn't bankrolled by the interests of the fossil fuel industry. Without trustworthy local media, people often turn to whatever news source is in front of them. We Don't Have Time for Chevron to continue to greenwash and bankroll climate misinformation to local American communities. The first step to creating a dialogue about the climate crisis is to support journalists and media that help spread reliable information about it and its solutions. Chevron is the company responsible for the McPhee oil spill, one of the largest spills in California history. As of this month, exactly two years after the spill began, more than 576,240 gallons of oil and 4.2 million gallons of wastewater have seeped from the ground into a dry streambed. But the California Geologic Energy Management Division hasn’t issued penalties to Chevron, apart from a fine it levied against the company for a nearby spill that occurred in May 2019. Even more alarming, is that Chevron is selling the oil that it collects from the spill, even though it’s coming from a surface expression, a seep prohibited by regulations. Surface expressions occur when oil and wastewater break through the ground via subsurface fractures and are likely caused by steam injection. There are illegal but apparently, this regulation is not enforced by the state of California which furthermore allows Chevron to sell oil bubbling up from this surface expression. CalGEM says it has yet to “assess” the amount of money Chevron has made off selling oil from this surface expression since November 2019. https://capitalandmain.com/with-californias-ok-chevron-is-selling-oil-from-an-illegal-spill

This independent report, compiled by environmental anthropologist Nan Greer with the support of fellow environmental organizations, has found that there are a total of 70 ongoing cases around the world in 31 countries against Chevron. Of those, only 0.006% of required fines, court judgements, and settlements have been paid, or about $286 million. Another $50.5 billion is still pending. Greer also consulted with international human rights lawyer Steven Donziger for the report — given his expertise as the lead attorney on a case for 30,000 plaintiffs in Ecuador against Chevron in an oil spill case so extreme it’s been dubbed the “Amazon Chernobyl.” That case resulted in a $9.5 billion judgement, the largest to date against Chevron. That judgement eventually resulted in Donziger spending nearly two years of house arrest in New York City. The day Greer’s report was released on October 27, Donziger was imprisoned. Lawyers who represent affected countries or peoples are being targeted by Chevron. In the case of Donziger, Greer noted, the United Nations statement for his release was not complied with by the United States government.
