"The failure of EU ministers to rubber stamp a political agreement on a new Nature Restoration Law risks undermining climate action and damaging the EU's credibility both globally and with voters, a handful of opposing ministers were warned on Monday." (Source: Euronews Green on March 25th 2024 by Robert Hodgsen) https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/03/25/fiery-exchange-over-nature-restoration-law-overshadows-climate-debate "The EU’s nature restoration laws appear to have been indefinitely postponed after a number of member states, including Hungary and Italy, withdrew support for the legislation." (Source: The Guardian on March 25th 2024) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/25/eu-nature-restoration-laws-in-balance-as-member-states-withdraw-support "If we do not agree with what we have already negotiated, we undermine the entire European legislative process. As well as the need to protect nature and fight climate change. We can start paying (farmers) for the protection and restoration of nature. But that's the opportunity we're missing at the moment," Ireland's Climate Minister said today at the EU Council meeting about the missed opportunity with the Nature Restoration Act. "A diplomatic source from a country supporting the nature law told Euronews that the delay was once again down to Hungary holding out. Despite Austria, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden all refusing to back the law." https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/03/22/future-of-nature-restoration-law-uncertain-amid-further-delay The law has not been passed for the time being, and the vote in the EU Environment Council has been postponed until June. The whole thing has considerable implications for Europe's democracy, but of course also for species and climate protection as well as our agriculture. A classification. This is about trust and the process of European unification - in short, Europe's democracy. Why should Parliament believe future promises and try to reach painful compromises with the Council if the Council does not keep them? This is exactly what has happened a few times now - the blockades of the FDP greet you. The pressure from right-wing extremists and the agricultural lobby not to adopt any environmental requirements for agriculture is having an effect. Europe's farmers are thus missing out on an opportunity to be paid for species and climate protection. The vote in the Council will probably take place after the EU elections. It might be the last chance for the law before Hungary takes over the presidency of the Council. "A minority of EU members have once again prevented the adoption of legislation designed to reverse decades of ecosystem degradation and honour a global agreement to halt biodiversity loss." (Source: Euronews Green on March 22nd 2024)

Imagine this graph depicts the spread of cancer in a patient’s body rather than global sea-surface temperatures. Each line represents a day in the life of the patient, with the darkening shades of blue showing the progression of the disease over the years. Now, look at the red line, representing 2024. It shows an alarming surge, a dramatic escalation of the condition. If this were a cancer patient, the urgency would be clear: immediate and aggressive treatment would be paramount. Yet, when it comes to the health of our planet, reflected in this very real graph of rising sea-surface temperatures from 1982 to 2024, our political leaders hesitate. Despite the clear signs of worsening climate health, the required ‘chemotherapy’—urgent and substantial action to combat climate change—is met with resistance or delayed. Why is it that we can understand the urgency in a medical crisis, yet when our planet exhibits the same distress signals, we drag our feet? It’s time for our leaders to treat the earth’s climate with the same seriousness as a life-threatening disease, because that’s exactly what it is. This year is a pivotal one, with an election that gives 2 billion people a voice at the ballot box. It’s a powerful opportunity for us all to decide what truly matters. As you cast your vote, consider not just the immediate impact on your wallet but the long-term implications for our collective future—a healthy planet. As we face the consequences of climate change, it's clear that the decisions we make now are more crucial than ever. So when you vote, vote for the world you want to live in, for the air you want to breathe, and for the future you want to see. Let's prioritize a healthy planet over temporary gains.

"In a major blow to the EU’s Green Deal and Farm to Fork framework, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday (6 February) that she will withdraw the Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR), which sought to halve pesticide use by 2030." (By Olivia Gyapong in EURACTIV online published on Feb 6th 2024) https://www.euractiv.com/section/agriculture-food/news/von-der-leyen-to-withdraw-the-contested-pesticide-regulation/ The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as it not only jeopardizes the well-being of our environment but also endangers the health of both animals and people across the continent. The extensive use of chemical pesticides has raised serious concerns about their adverse effects on biodiversity, soil quality, and water systems. The indiscriminate application of these pesticides has led to the decimation of crucial pollinators such as bees, which play a pivotal role in maintaining the ecological balance and ensuring the productivity of our agricultural systems. The loss of biodiversity has far-reaching consequences for our ecosystems, disrupting food chains and threatening the delicate balance of nature. Furthermore, the detrimental impact of chemical #pesticides on human health cannot be ignored. Studies have linked the exposure to certain pesticides with an increased risk of chronic diseases, developmental disorders, and various forms of cancer. Vulnerable populations, such as children and pregnant women, are particularly at risk, and the long-term consequences of exposure to these harmful chemicals are alarming. It is imperative that we prioritize sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to #chemicalpesticides, promoting practices that protect both our ecosystems and the health of our citizens. The #europeanunion has a proud history of leading the way in environmental protection with the #eugreendeal and I believe that under your leadership, we can once again demonstrate our commitment to a greener, healthier future. I urge you to follow the sustainable use of pesticides regulation (SUR) seeking to halve the use of chemical plant protection products by 2030 and to completely ban them in ‘sensitive areas’ such as public parks and playgrounds. Do you need help to achieve the goal? Ask Jutta Paulus. The Time Magazine time.com/6341016/climate-loss-and-damage-fund-cop28 Let's compare it to the damage from oil in USD. - oil adds a third of the world's total carbon emissions. - In aggregate, the climate change-attributed costs of extreme weather over 2000–2019 are estimated to be US 2.86 trillion, or an average of US 143 billion per year.
