Cargill is launching the Cargill SustainConnect program to assist Australian canola growers in adopting sustainable agricultural practices. The program offers financial incentives for farmers implementing regenerative practices such as soil health improvement and decarbonization. After a successful pilot in 2023, Cargill is expanding the program to serve more local canola farmers in Australia. Farmers can choose from various sustainable practices, with outcomes tracked and verified by carbon measurement company Regrow. https://www.environmentenergyleader.com/2024/02/cargill-introduces-sustainable-agriculture-program-for-australian-canola-growers/

On September 6, Global Witness, an activist group, released a report revealing that Cargill has been purchasing soybeans grown on 50,000 acres of deforested land in Bolivia's Chiquitano Forest. Cargill, one of the largest buyers of Bolivian soy, has been sourcing from Mennonite colonies in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, situated in the biodiverse Chiquitano forest. The investigation found that since 2017, these colonies have deforested nearly 53,000 acres of land, with three out of five areas having zero percent of suitable land for intensive farming. The report suggests that Cargill's practices may jeopardize an estimated 3 million hectares of forest. Cargill responded by emphasizing its commitment to ending deforestation in its supply chains, asserting that it is working with Mennonite communities and has mapped their polygons to trace grains from indirect suppliers. However, questions persist regarding the company's sustainability claims and traceability efforts. https://www.feednavigator.com/Article/2023/09/07/Global-Witness-Cargill-linked-to-soy-led-deforestation-in-Bolivia?utm_source=copyright&utm_medium=OnSite&utm_campaign=copyright
Global Witness: Cargill linked to soy led deforestation in Bolivia
A new Global Witness investigation alleges that US agribusiness giant, Cargill, has directly purchased soy from farms in Bolivia where more than 20,000 hectares of forest have been razed since 2017.
