Floods have worsened over the past years as South Sudan is suffering increasingly from the consequences of climate change. Floods are affecting every year between 750,000 and more than one million people, forcing half of them to leave their homeland to higher grounds. Floods affect mostly areas along the Nile and Lol rivers and Sudd marshlands. In recent years up to half of all counties in South Sudan were affected by the floods. Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile States are the hardest hit, representing three quarters of the affected people.

SAINT LOUIS, Senegal — As a young geologist working for Senegal’s state-owned petroleum company in the 1990s, Macky Sall was charged with prospecting for oil and gas in this West African nation. For years, he and his colleagues came up empty. But more than two decades later, after Sall was elected to be Senegal’s president, an American energy company found a gas deposit so big that he has called it a “game changer.” The 15 trillion cubic feet of gas found in 2015 has turned Senegal into one of Africa’s biggest potential producers of natural gas — and turned Sall into a global champion for the right of developing nations to use their resources, including fossil fuels, to industrialize and develop. After multiple delays, Senegal is now set to start producing gas from the reserves later this year, according to oil and gas giant BP, which is leading the operation. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/01/31/senegal-natural-gas-climate-change/
African production of natural gas poses a vexing climate challenge

Toshia, Nigeria – In a remote corner of Nigeria’s northeastern state of Yobe, lie communities surrounded by vast sand dunes stretching as far as the eye can see. In recent years, the desert has been coming closer to these communities, a development that continues to affect the lives of people there. Toshia town in Yunusari local government area, close to the border with Niger, is one such community. Rides to the town involve old, crowded four-wheel drive vehicles, with passengers squeezed into every available space – including the rooftop, bouncing around as the vehicle navigates the soft sand. https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/1/5/desert-swallows-livelihoods-as-climate-shocks-continue-in-northeast-nigeria

The World Health Organization (WHO) today launched an appeal for US$ 1.5 billion to protect the health of the most vulnerable populations in 41 emergencies around the globe in 2024. The appeal covers the emergencies that demand the highest level of response from WHO, with the aim to reach over 87 million people. It is being issued in a context of complex emergencies cutting across crises of conflict, climate change and economic instability, which continue to fuel displacement, hunger, and inequality.

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 17 (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday said the phase-out of fossil fuels was essential and inevitable to avoid a global climate catastrophe. "Let me be very clear again: the phase-out of fossil fuels is essential and inevitable. No amount of spin or scare tactics will change that. Let's hope it doesn't come too late," he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The elephants died between August and December last year in the 14,651 sq km Hwange national park, which is home to endangered elephants, buffalo, lions, cheetahs, giraffes and other species. At least six other elephants have recently been discovered dead outside the park in suspected poaching incidents.

Genetic diversity is crucial if species are to adapt to climate change. An international study including the University of Helsinki researchers shows that current efforts to monitor genetic diversity in Europe are incomplete and insufficient. The study proposes a novel approach for identifying and pinpointing important geographical areas on which to focus. Every living thing on our planet is distinguished from its fellow creatures by small differences in its hereditary material. So, when the environment changes and becomes unfavorable to populations of species, such as plants and animals, this genetic variability can enable them to adapt to the new conditions, rather than becoming extinct or having to migrate to other habitats.

The climate crisis could cause up to 10,000 extra deaths in the UK every year by the 2050s as a result of extreme heat and bring a host of tropical diseases, a stark report has warned. The worst-case scenario, published in a damning document by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) on Monday, would see average temperatures rise by 4.3C, bringing an estimated twelvefold rise in heat-related deaths by 2070. It adds that deaths could increase by one-and-a-half times in the 2030s.

DUBAI, Dec 11 (Reuters) - U.N.
