Great news from Kenya's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) who have announced a ban on the use of plastic garbage bags and bin liners. This follows a ban on plastic carrier bags use and manufacturing in 2017, which unfortunately has not been followed religiously. Now NEMA has promised to do a crackdown on the same to ensure this ban is executed Perfectly. "To ensure environmentally sound management of the organic waste fraction, the Authority hereby directs that within 90 days from the date of this notice; All organic waste generated by households, private sector and public sector institutions, religious institutions, private and public functions and events; shall strictly be segregated and placed in 100 per cent biodegradable garbage bags/ bin liners only," the statement read in part. More interestingly all households have been asked to collect organic waste separately and have it transported to a designated Material Recovery Facility for further processing. "The use of conventional plastic bags/bin liners for collection of organic waste shall thus cease forthwith," NEMA directed. To ensure that the directive was implemented nationally, all county governments and private waste service providers licensed by NEMA were required to provide their clients the 100 per cent biodegradable garbage bags/bin liners. A report by European Environment Agency (EEA) has revealed that Europe is not prepared for the rapidly growing climate risks it faces, which includes Dangers of wildfires, extreme weather and other factors. “Our new analysis shows that Europe faces urgent climate risks that are growing faster than our societal preparedness,” said Leena Ylä-Mononen, the EEA’s executive director. As documented in the report this climate risk factors needs urgent actions. The study underscores that the most pressing risks includes fossil fuel pollution heats the planet – are heat stress, flash floods and river floods, the health of coastal and marine ecosystems, and the need for solidarity funds to recover from disasters. The researchers who reassessed six of the risks for southern Europe, which they described as a “hotspot” region, found urgent action was also needed to keep crops safe and to protect people, buildings and nature from wildfires. There is increasing evidence of adaptation but “it’s certainly not enough”, said Robbert Biesbroek, a report author from Wageningen University, who also co-led the chapter on Europe in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on adaptation. “It’s not going quickly enough and it’s not reaching the ones that need it most,” he said. “It’s quite scary in that sense.” As the EU is set to respond to this shocking research, the globe is all ears to understand the situation from their side and the working policy on how to protect the environment and the wellbeing of the people. The City Park Nursery a project by the county government of Nairobi is now breathing life to Kenya's capital by reviving the city lost glory by growing seedlings now used in greening the city. The City Park nursery is supplying seedlings, shrubs and flowers to other parks and public spaces across the City for beautification and greening the city. The best part of this initiative is that it has created green employment for the youths in Nairobi and beyond. The City Park nursery achieve this by has selling or renting out the plants to the public. Now over the 500,000 trees planted in the financial year 2022/2023 a large number of the seedlings were sourced from this nursery Interestingly the City Park allows the locals to bring their own plants pots to get the plants at a reasonable price. It is encouraging how Citizen TV has embarked on environmental journalism by reporting on climate change debate and embracing climate action champions. This is a great way to champion for sustainability now and in the future . In a recent special feature, Citizen TV features an innovator from Kisumu who is making shoes and leather jackets from fish skin(waste). This are good news noting that since time immemorial this fish waste has been dumped by filleting companies around Lake Victoria leading to air pollution from its stench coupled with environmental degredation. Newton Owino, a leather chemist come up with this incredible initiative to help in managing this waste and turning it to meaningful commodities. "The main idea was actually to sustainably manage this waste and also to generate income. We didn't just look at it as waste," Owino says. Owino has established a firm where he collect the waste and turn the fish skin into leather, which he then use to make products such as shoes, jackets, belts and even book covers. Additionally this initiative aside cleaning environment it has created green jobs for youth and women around the area. "I want to urge the youth to look around them and see value in things around them. The leather business is very lucrative, but people think it is only for the less fortunate in society. If we tap into this fully, it is something one can do until they lose their eyesight," Owino says. I am happy to see Citizen TV bring this into light. I only hope Mr Owino's idea will be embraced in Kenya and beyond to aid in managing fish waste in filleting companies. It is sad that the rivers in Britain and Northern Ireland are in a desperate state from the impact of pollution as documented in a report by Rivers Trust. Rivers Trust reports that this is caused by untreated sewage and agricultural and industrial runoff. In another report by EU-derived water framework directive (WFD) in 2022 more than 54% of rivers in England failed to pass chemical and ecological tests because of pollution from water industry releases of treated and untreated sewage. Furthermore agricultural pollution contributes to 62% of waterways in England failing to meet good standards for chemical and biological pollution. Urban runoff from transport contributes to 26% of rivers not achieving good overall status. The report shows none of England’s rivers are in good chemical health, which means the concentrations of toxic chemicals are higher than the safe limit in every river. Failing to pass chemical tests means no river in England is considered to be in good overall health. Just 15% of rivers pass biological markers for good ecological health. Ecological health looks at what is living in the river, and how modified it is. The presence, absence and abundance of species is a good indication of its general health. Courtesy of the youth led global climate movement, Fridays for Future two rivalry groups in the public transport sector will be together on the streets of Germany to push for reforms in this sector. The campaign dubbed #WirFahrenZusammen (#WeDriveTogether) that will bring together bus and train drivers is fighting for better working conditions for transport workers and much-needed investment and reform to the public transport system. This transformation is targeted to address climate change effects issues in the transport sector. This is so significant especially noting that according to the European Environment Agency (EEA) transport is responsible for about a quarter of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions. On their part public transport stakeholders laments that they've been facing a critical moment due to cost-cutting measures, primarily at the expense of bus and train drivers. “Our public transport system is about to collapse. Bus drivers are completely overworked, many of us are off sick and many of us aren't coming back,” says Mattias Kurreck, a bus driver from Berlin. “Our shifts are getting longer, our breaks are pretty non-existent and we constantly stress about delays to the service.” Working conditions are so poor that many are leaving the profession, and finding new recruits is posing a significant challenge. “This isn’t something that can be solved in wage negotiations, it goes far beyond that,” says a spokesperson for Fridays for Future. “We need substantial investments in public transport, and this must come from the government.” By joining forces, Fridays for Future and Ver.di hope to demonstrate that this is a political issue that requires governments and local councils to find solutions. This is a great movement in the pursuit to sustainable employment and improving the health of public sector employees. UK's attorney general, Victoria Prentis KC, has appealed for the last defence used by environmental protesters to be removed. This is after a defendant labeled C was acquited by the jury for acts of criminal damage involving daubing paint on buildings. Speaking to the Guardian, the defendant says the attempt to remove the defence was an assault on the rights of juries to acquit defendants. This is after she was found not guilty by a jury of criminal damage in a climate trial last year. “I was found not guilty by a jury after a long trial. I feel like the attorney general is trying to retrospectively challenge the jury’s decision. It feels like an assault on the rights of juries to acquit someone having listened to the evidence.” Tom Little KC for the attorney general, told the appeal court judges that use of the so-called “consent” defence under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 was wrong and too broad an interpretation of the law. The defence, which relates to criminal damage only, involves a defendant arguing they had an honest belief that the owner of the property damaged would have consented if they had known the reasons why the action had been taken. Recently climate defenders have resorted to using this after a similar defence was removed under the Human Rights Act by the former attorney general, Suella Braverman. “The defence has only recently begun to be run … since the last attorney general closed down one door. Another door has been wrongly broken down in order [for defendants] to make this argument,” he said. On his part Henry Blaxland KC, for defendant C argues that this is a matter for a jury to decide whether a defendant honestly believed that the owner of a property would have consented to the damage caused. “This is a matter for the jury,” said Blaxland. He said to stop a defendant presenting the defence to jurors “would be a slippery slope to the erosion of the constitutional right to trial by jury”. Tana Delta wetlands which has been on the verge of destruction due to human encroachment, man made activities and climate change effects might now get a new face. This comes after the realisation of Tana River and Lamu county residents in conjunction with Nature Kenya that this is now affecting the weather patterns and if not dealt with might cause a catastrophe. In a bid to make things right members of this communities are now collecting indeginous seeds and replanting them around the Tana Delta and sharing the rest with the neibouring communities. Since 2021 this communities have successfully restored 85,000 ha out of their targeted 10,000 ha, which they believe will be hit soon. On his part Dr Paul Matiko, Director Nature Kenya calls the government to recognize Tana Delta wetlands Nationaly where he highlights that not recognising the wetland is the main challange. This is a commendable effort that will help in restoring the largest wetland in Kenya which translates to normal weather patterns, important sources of water for human consumption, agriculture and watering of livestock. In a bid to reduce single use plastic pollution in Cambodia, entrepreneur Has Kea, 41, has invested changing plastic bottles into stips which are the turned to brooms bristles. This plastic bottles are bought from garbage collectors turned into strips and later softened in water before they are sewn with metal wires into the ends of a bamboo stick. "This broom is quite solid, not easy to break," said Suon Kosal, a 26-year-old Buddhist monk whose temple bought 80 of the brooms last month. This is a great transformation in the in the fight against plastic pollution. In the last 11 months they have transformed around 40 tonnes of discarded plastic bottles, about 5,000 bottles per day, by "upcycling" them into brooms they say are more robust than regular brushes. Alongside making the environment habitable this practice is now a way to create job opportunities for fellows in Cambodia. Fears are arising as the labour leader, Keir Starmer is expected to announce scaling back Labour’s £28bn green investment programme, as reported by the Guardian. The labour party has taken this direction considering the economic uncertainty by the conservative government which is going to be the biggest policy U-turn since Starmer took over the party . Recent media briefings by shadow ministers have led to speculation of a split between Starmer and his shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves. Reeves was asked repeatedly about the pledge in an interview with Sky News last week but failed to mention the £28bn on 10 separate occasions. Starmer on the other hand had used the figure as recently as this week, when he told Times Radio: “We want to have clean power by 2030 … That’s where the £28bn comes in, that investment that is desperately needed for that mission.” This is going to be dangerous since it will scale down efforts to greening the environment, no matter the economic uncertainty the labour party should be warned and must reconsider this decision to protect the environment. It is sad to report that after an investigation done in England Seventeen landfills are known to be producing a highly toxic liquid substance containing some banned and potentially carcinogenic “forever chemicals”, in some cases at levels 260 times higher than that deemed safe for drinking water, it can be revealed. Even worse the government of England says it have no clue where these landfills are. This conclusion is after a 10-month investigation by consultants working for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Environment Agency. As reported by the Guardian the investigators took and they found that in one landfill, the total sum of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the raw leachate sample was 105,910 nanograms a litre (ng/l). PFAS are a group of about 10,000 human-made chemicals used in industrial processes, firefighting foams and consumer products. They are known as “forever chemicals” owing to their persistence in the environment. This chemicals are toxic and hazardous to human health. They are related to diseases such as kidney cancer, testicular cancer, hypertension, thyroid disease, ulcerative colitis, high cholesterol and reduced response to vaccines. Unfortunately the government have not indetified in which landfills this toxic chemicals are coming from, which poses a great danger. EU has structured new regulations in a bid to clean the environment where cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies will pay more to clean up microplastic pollution they dispose in urban waste waters. In the drafted rules dubbed as “polluter pays principle” the two companies will have to cover at least 80% of the extra costs needed to get rid of tiny pollutants that are dirtying urban wastewater. Virginijus Sinkevičius, the bloc’s environment commissioner, said the steps would safeguard citizens from harmful discharges of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics that end up in water bodies. “This will make our water cleaner and protect our health.” The rules, which have been agreed by the European parliament and council of Europe but not yet formally adopted, bulk up requirements to remove nutrients from water and set new standards for micropollutants. They also broaden the areas covered by the law. The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg joined a protest from Farnborough town centre, in Hampshire, to Farnborough airport alongside local residents and Extinction Rebellion activists to protest against an airport expansion plan. This is after Farnborough airport commits to increase number of flights amid calls for a ban on private jets Farnborough Airport Ltd has submitted a planning application to Rushmoor borough council to increase the number of flights from 50,000 to 70,000 a year. This is devastating especially noting that there will be more private jets in this airport. Activists called for a total ban on private jets, which they say are up to 30 times more polluting than passenger airliners. “The fact that using private jets is both legally and socially allowed today in an escalating climate emergency is completely detached from reality,” Thunberg said. “There are few examples that show as clearly how the rich elite is sacrificing present and future living conditions on this planet so they can maintain their extreme and violent lifestyles.” Source - The Guardian Read More - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/jan/27/greta-thunberg-joins-protest-against-expansion-of-hampshire-airport

Airbus has unveiled its first global aircraft recycling project, named Airbus Lifecycle Services Centre (ALSC), in Chengdu, a major aviation hub in southwest China. As reported by Xinhua the mega project amounts to 6 billion yuan ($838 million) and targets to improve the recycling rate of aircraft components and materials, so that over 90% of an aircraft by weight can be recycled. The project which sits on a land spanning over 60 hectares is set to provide resale of reusable parts from retired aircraft. Michel Forst, the U.N.’s special rapporteur on environmental defenders, said he had been left “alarmed” and “distressed” by a fact-finding mission to the U.K. earlier this month, citing “increasingly severe crackdowns” on the right to peaceful protest and widespread derision of “environmental defenders” by “the media and political figures.” Forst recorded his worries as he revealed that a severe crackdown on green protesters in Britain by police is extremely with excessive force and much restrictions on courtroom evidence. He has called out the UK government saying that this is going to have a negative impact on fundamental freedoms and highten climate change effects. As the world faces a triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, environmental protesters were acting for the “benefit of us all” and must be protected, Michel Forst, the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders, said on Tuesday. Further, Forst says that the rules imposed on defendants in Inner London crown court, peaceful protesters have been forbidden by court order from mentioning the climate crisis, fuel poverty or even the US civil rights movement in their statements to the jury. “It is very difficult to understand what could justify denying the jury the opportunity to hear the reason for the defendant’s action, and how a jury could reach a properly informed decision without hearing it, in particular at the time of environmental defenders’ peaceful but ever more urgent calls for the government to take pressing action for the climate,” Forst said. This is so brave of the UN special rapporteur Michel Forst for calling out the UK government for ignoring the cry of climate justice defenders. The UK government must be ashamed of this new rules and regulations that bars freedom of green protesters especially at a time when they've failed as a government to hit their climate targets as they had promised. NEMA has allowed construction of the proposed Ksh 4.4 billion of Ndunyu-Njeru-Ihithe road which is set to cut across 25 kilometres of the Aberdare Forest’s closed canopy and connect the Nyeri and Nyandarua Counties. This comes after a tag of war between the executive and the judiciary for a while, where President has vowed to proceed with the project in disregard to the rule of law. The project which has been a centre of controversy since 2009 raised concerns about the massive negative impacts it has on natural forests. This complaint was raised by conservationists which includes Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, Nature Kenya, National Environment Civil Society Alliance of Kenya, African Wildlife Foundation, Rhino Ark, Kenya Tourism Federation and the East Africa Wildlife Society. The conservationists also warned that the project is most likely to create more human and animals conflict and affect elephants natural habitat in Kenya considering that 10% of the country's population resides here. In a statement in 2009 NEMA rejected the approval of the project citing the negative impacts on the forest. It is sad that NEMA has bowed to pressure and this project is going to be approved. In its letter issued to the Ministry of Roads then, NEMA stated: “The Authority is unable to issue an environmental impact assessment licence for the project. You are advised to redesign your plans to explore alternative sites.” Kenya's President William Ruto who has vowed to go on with the project whatsoever must also consider environmental implications of this project. Leaders must know how to balance delivery and dealing with climate change issues. It's disheartening to hear that the construction of the Ndunyu-Njeru-Ihithe road, allowed by NEMA, is set to cut across 25 kilometers of Aberdare Forest's closed canopy. The Aberdare Forest is a critical natural habitat that plays a significant role in preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. The concerns raised by conservationists, including Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, Nature Kenya, and others, about the negative impacts on the natural forests, potential human-animal conflicts, and threats to the habitat of elephants, cannot be ignored. The initial rejection of the project by NEMA in 2009 highlighted the environmental risks associated with it, and it's disappointing to see the project moving forward despite these concerns.

The president of Azerbaijan,Ilham Aliyev has added 12 women to the previously all-male organising committee selected for COP29 global climate summit after a backlash from environmental enthusiast. The committee that is set to organize the international conference to be held in Arzabeijan in December comprised 28 men which climate change campaigners termed as retrogressive. President Ilham Aliyev also added a man to the committee, which now comprises 29 men and 12 women. Among the women added are Umayra Taghiyeva, the deputy minister of ecology and natural resources, the human rights commissioner, Sabina Aliyeva, and Bahar Muradova, the chair of the state committee on family, women and children’s problems. However more calls to add more women and create a balance are still on. “This is positive progress but we are still far from a 50:50 gender balance,” said Elise Buckle, Women added to Cop29 climate summit committee after backlashco-founder of She Changes Climate. “This is a quick fix but not enough.” In as much as this is a good approach I agree with Elise Buckle that more women should be incorporated in this committee and treated as a priority on matters climate action now and in the future. The Guardian has reveal shocking news that the UK water industry Plans to urgently tackle the sewage pollution crisis that has been delayed for 4 months might take more time. This is after UK water industry fail to give a publication date when the issue will be addressed. It is sad how the government have failed to keep its promise after government ministers in the previous year promised to urgently deal with the sewage overflow that is spilling in rivers and seas. This happend even after Water UK pledged to release £10bn for the national overflows plan. This is disheartening since clean water is vital for human health and survival. Norway is set to allow dumping of mining waste in its Fjords after winning a case against environmental campaigners who tried to stop this action. This comes after a long dispute over 15years between Nordic mining and the environmental campaigners, and now after winning the case they'll be allowed to dispose 170 tonnes of mining waste in Førde fjord. It is sad that the government of Norway ignored a warning from Norwegian instute of Marine Research who says this is harmful to Marine life and it will put biodiversity at risk. Norway will not only harm marine life but also risk loosing their iconic feature considering that Norway has the longest, narrowest, deepest and most beautiful fjords in the World. Katrick Technologies a company based in Glasgow has now inovated a great way to generate electricity from wind in a new fashioned technique. Unlike the traditional wind turbines mounted on tall towers with blades, Katrick Technologies use simple hexagonal and shaped like honeycomb turbines that are more sustainable. This turbines that can be installed on the tops of buildings or other structures are affordable and sustainable as they use smaller spaces unlike the conventional method. Investors also argues that this turbines are easily installed in the urban areas, hence more sustainability in our cities. Unlike the old method the new model of wind turbines work within a larger scope of wind speeds and directions, at low heights. At such a time when the world has resolved to end the reliance of fossil fuels around the globe, Uruguay could be a nation to watch. As the world struggle to end this fossil fuels dependence, Uruguay is celebrating having made it possible to use renewable energy to the tune of 95%. This success that backdates to the 2000s was contributed to higher prices of oil barrels since Uruguay depended on importation of oil. I believe with such a driving force other nations can do the same and transition to use of clean energy. Climate change adverse effects must be used as a motivation to do better to save our planet. Climate defenders, campaigners, government authorities and environmental experts must explore what President emeritus Tabaré Vazquez achieved this milestone. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) has laid up a 17 points plan on how all of us can make a sustainable holiday season as a way to protect the environment and still have a happy Christmas and a new year season. Among the 17 point plan FAO highlights how most of us waste food during the holiday season ,calling out all to desist from such behaviours by taking what is enough and embracing sharing the excess food. Further FAO insists on the right use of energy in the holiday season. Most are times during the holidays electricity is used to do decorations, music is never switched off, more energy wasted in cooking etc. FAO is now calling for all of us to reduce energy consumption by switching off electricity when not in use and use energy sources only when need be. Choosing to keep our cities, rivers , parks and oceans clean is paramount and FAO highlights on its importance. During the holiday season people dispose irresponsibly in parks, oceans and cities, which has a negative effects on the environment. You can choose to do better. This is a must read for all climate action enthusiasts. The question is ,are you having a sustainable holiday? If not ,check this out and adjust. Take this new traditions into the new year Read more - https://www.fao.org/fao-stories/article/en/c/1460009/

The FAO's focus on reducing waste, particularly in terms of excess food, aligns with broader efforts to address global food security and minimize the environmental impact of food production. Additionally, the call to manage energy consumption during the holidays reflects the need for sustainable practices in the face of increasing energy demands.

The United Kingdom authorities has continued the use of neonicotinotid pesticide Cruiser SB, a pesticide that kills bees. This comes even after the pesticide was banned by the European Union, a call from the scientists that the UK government has ignored. Considering the adverse effects caused by the pesticide and the warning from farmers and scientists in UK, the authorities must sought to recall the use of all neonicotinotid products for the sake of bees and for the environment. US President, Joe Biden’s has announced a new proposal aimed at banning logging in old-growth forests, a move that targets to protect millions of trees that play a key role in fighting the climate crisis. This proposal comes from an executive order signed by the president on Earth Day in 2022 that directed the US Forest Service and the land management bureau to conduct an inventory of old-growth and mature forest groves as well as to develop policies that protect them. “We think this will allow us to respond effectively and strategically to the biggest threats that face old growth,” the US agriculture secretary, Tom Vilsack, told the Washington Post. “At the end of the day, it will protect not just the forests but also the culture and heritage connected to the forests.” Source - The Guardian Read more - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/dec/19/biden-forest-logging-ban-old-trees

United kingdom has created a new law to curb carbon emmisions. All imported raw materials such as steel and cement will now incur a new carbon tax from 2027. This is meant to support all domestic producers and reduce emissions. The Treasury department says the regulation is set to address the phenomenon of “carbon leakage”, in which UK manufacturers are undercut on price by foreign rivals whose governments do not impose levies on businesses that emit a lot of carbon. The chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, said: “This levy will make sure carbon intensive products from overseas – like steel and ceramics – face a comparable carbon price to those produced in the UK, so that our decarbonisation efforts translate into reductions in global emissions. “This should give UK industry the confidence to invest in decarbonisation as the world transitions to net zero.” Source - The Guardian Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/dec/18/uk-carbon-tax-steel-imports-iron-ceramics-cement

Nice move! Nema should call on all small business operators commonly referred to as Mama Mboga's to avoid use of flimsy paper bags to package their merchandise and embrace use of recommended biodegradable bags that are friendly to the environment... If they tighten that rule it will help a lot to curb the mess.
