Climate Review Score ranking:
On 22 July 2024, a synchronised wave of climate campaigns and advocacy events will take place worldwide as the Climate Clock strikes 4 years to prevent 1.5°C of global warming.” Monday, 22 July 2024–Climate Emergency Day marks the passing of yet another year as the Climate Clock counts down to 1.5°C of global warming. At 5 PM BST / 12 PM ET / 4 PM GMT / 12 AM CST, the countdown will pass from 5 years 0 days 00:00:00 to 4 years 364 days 23:59:59, highlighting the critical window in which we have time to enact bold solutions to avert the worst impacts of climate. This change on the clock will increase the level of urgency and shift common parlance around the climate crisis used by thought leaders, scientists and thinkers to “4 years to prevent permanent global warming of 1.5°C”. The Climate Clock counts down to the 1.5°C deadline using IPCC data, the gold standard of climate science. The Clock also displays several ‘lifelines’, solutions to help slow the pace of change, including a just transition to renewable energy, regenerative farming, gender parity and protecting indigenous land. For the last two years, Climate Clock has marked the ticking over of each year with a day of global action, demanding world leaders to #ActInTime. In 2024, Climate Emergency Day will be part of a global call #TimeToEndFossilFuels through the divestment of funds away from fossil fuels and towards solutions for our collective future. Climate Emergency Day marks a pivotal moment for individuals and communities to amplify the urgency of the climate crisis, and call for actionable, system-wide and scalable solutions. Climate Clock is known for its 80-foot digital clock face in New York City's Union Square, as well as its other large-scale clocks located across the globe in London, Rome, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing and Harrisburg, PA. In addition, portable “action” clocks are in the hands of climate leaders worldwide, from Greta Thunberg to Bill McKibben to King Charles III and London Mayor Saddiq Khan. In 2015, our world leaders and almost 200 countries pledged to hold global temperatures to a maximum rise of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. However, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is now an 80% chance the planet will breach 1.5°C (2.7F) in warming above pre-industrial times in at least one of the next five calendar years. The world’s leading scientists now expect a rise to at least 2.5°C of heating with disastrous results for humanity. A full programme of global activity will be announced later this month. "July 22, 2024, marks a critical juncture, representing not just the passage of time but a crucial opportunity for a unified push toward systemic change. Our window for action is narrowing, but we still have a chance to make a difference. Climate Emergency Day is our moment to unite with communities, influence policy and investments, and hold governments and corporations accountable for their promises to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and finance climate solutions. This urgency is heightened as nearly half of the world goes to the polls this year. The choices we make at the ballot box will shape our future and determine whether we seize this critical moment to drive systemic change. It is a decisive year for our planet and for our leaders to demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable future." Mahak Agrawal, Climate Science and Sustainability Expert and the Global Campaign Lead at Climate Clock Please find photography and footage from previous Climate Emergency Days & general Climate Clock photography here. The Climate Clock is a global symbol of urgency, melding art, science, tech, and grassroots mobilisation to alert people to the climate emergency and help enact hopeful, doable solutions in line with global commitments to the Paris Agreement that aims to keep global warming below 1.5°C to preserve a liveable world for all. Individuals and communities worldwide are encouraged to mark the moment the Clock ticks below 5 years for the first time. Time is really running out.. we should be at least 75% on the path of achieving the set goals. But now it indicates all of us collectively we need to pull our socks.

As the world brutally witnesses the consequences of the climate crisis all over the globe, the significance of Climate Emergency Day on July 22, 2023, cannot be overstated. With the Climate Clock ticking down below six years for the first time, we are reminded of the urgency to take decisive action against the escalating threat of climate change. Climate Emergency Day should not just be another date on the calendar; but a rallying cry for a unified global effort. It is a call to arms for everyone, from individuals to organisations, to take tangible climate action. We must recognise that the battle against climate change is not a solitary endeavour. It requires cooperation, collaboration, and determination on an unprecedented scale. As the clock strikes the new climate year, let's push for the world to #ActInTime. https://climateclock.world/climate-emergency-day

During COP26 The Climate Clock showed up on one of the We Don't Have Time broadcasts and I thought it was a smart concept. This clock is both counting down, showing us that we have less than eight years left in our global “carbon budget” that gives a two-thirds chance of staying under the critical threshold of 1.5°C of global warming, that's The Deadline. But it is also counting up! The Lifelines on the Climate Clock make explicit the speed and scope of action that political leaders must take in order to limit the worst climate impacts. The clock counts three of them. One showcases the percentage of global energy coming from renewable sources, which is currently around 12.5% and rising, but not nearly fast enough, Another measures the land protected by indigenous people: 43.5 million KM² acknowledging the importance to protect indigenous peoples and their ecosystems. And the third one shows the size of the Green Climate Fund, showing the amount of money wealthy countries have contributed to the Green Climate Fund, the finance mechanism set up by the UNFCCC to support critical climate mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries which is now around $9.52 billion pledged and should rise to at least 100 according to the last COP pledges. You can integrate the clock into your website, with a simple HTML. (you can find it here: https://climateclock.world/clocks) It can also be featured in your city, like in Berlin, New York, Seoul, Rome & Glasgow. You can also have a smaller one at your office, school, in your bedroom why not after all! Read more about the science behind it: https://climateclock.world/
