Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer Northvolt secured approval from the European Union for a 902-million-euro ($986.43 million) German state subsidy. The funding will be utilized to establish an electric vehicle battery production plant in northern Germany. According to the European Commission, the plant is expected to expedite the green transition in the 27-country bloc and decrease dependence on traditional fuels. The German financial support is deemed crucial, as Northvolt had plans to construct the plant in the United States with assistance from the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act if the aid was not granted. The German subsidy comprises a 700-million-euro direct grant and a 202-million-euro guarantee. Situated in the city of Heide, the plant will boast an annual capacity of 60 GWh, equivalent to powering 800,000 to 1 million electric vehicles annually, depending on the battery size. Production is scheduled to commence in 2026, with full capacity anticipated by 2029. https://www.marketscreener.com/news/latest/Northvolt-gains-EU-nod-for-986-mln-German-aid-to-build-EV-battery-plant-45690631/

Europe’s energy and electric vehicle industries could reduce their dependency on scarce raw materials from China after the launch of a “breakthrough” sodium-ion battery, according to its Swedish developer. Northvolt, Europe’s only large homegrown electric battery maker, has said it has made a lower cost, more sustainable battery designed to store electricity which does not use lithium, nickel, graphite and cobalt. Northvolt said its new battery, which has an energy density of more than 160 watt-hours per kilogram, has been designed for electricity storage plants but could in future be used in electric vehicles, such as two wheeled scooters. “Using sodium-ion technology is not new but we think this is the first product ever completely free from critical raw materials. It is a fundamental breakthrough,” said Patrik Andreasson, Northvolt’s vice-president of strategy and sustainability. “This provides an option that is not dependent on certain parts of the world, including China.” https://www.pv-magazine.com/2023/11/22/northvolt-unveils-160-wh-kg-sodium-ion-battery/

Europe is (soon) two mega factories for car batteries richer Europe will soon be two mega battery factories for electric cars richer. The Swedish Northvolt and the Taiwanese ProLogium will start production in 2026 in the German Heide and the French Dunkirk. The electric car market is exploding. One in five cars sold this year will be electric, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted. It is even expected that the electric car will be just as cheap as the petrol car around 2025. More mining and production on European soil More electric cars requires more (scarce) raw materials. The most important part of the electric car, the battery, often comes from countries such as China. If it is up to the European Union, Europe should mine and produce more raw materials for batteries on its own land. It wants to become less dependent on other continents. Swedish Northvolt in Germany That seems to be slowly happening. Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt is coming to Heide in northern Germany with a factory. The battery manufacturer would invest around 3 to 5 billion euros in the new factory, which would create around 3,000 jobs. From 2026, 60 gigawatt-hours of batteries must roll out of the factory every year. Northvolt comes to Germany because of Europe's 'Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework' (TCTF). This should help European member states to stimulate support measures that are essential for the transition to a climate-neutral economy. The company is awaiting approval from the European Union. The grant to Northvolt would be the first from the TCTF. Taiwanese battery manufacturer in France The Taiwanese ProLogium is also coming to Europe. The company is building a factory in Dunkirk, France, for the production of car batteries. Since Taiwan is a sensitive point in the tensions between America and China, the company also wants to secure an overseas base. The construction of the factory will cost about 5.2 billion euros and should produce about 48 gigawatt hours of batteries annually. It is not yet known who the buyers of the car batteries will be.

Battery producer Northvolt sees great potential in wood as a raw material for batteries. Hard carbon based on lignin (a natural glue that can be found in trees) can serve as an anode. Together with forestry company Stora Enso, the company is investigating the possibilities. Anodes are made of different materials, such as magnesium, aluminum, zinc or graphite. Wood was not yet an option, but Nortvolt wants to change that. Trees consist of twenty to thirty percent lignin, which serves as a binding agent and ensures that wood does not rot. It is also a by-product of the production of cellulose fibers and may just be repurposed in the world of batteries. More durable batteries Founded in 2016 by former Tesla executives, Northvolt is a European battery cell manufacturer. The company is currently building its first giga-factory in northern Sweden, but Northvolt has already won $55 billion in contracts. The future customer base includes BMW, Volvo and Volkswagen. The battery maker has ambitious plans in the field of sustainability. For example, 50 percent of all raw materials it uses by 2030 must come from recycled batteries. Anode of lignin The intended anode of wood should also provide sustainability benefits. According to Northvolt, this can lead to a lower CO2 footprint. This is because wood is a renewable raw material and lignin is a by-product of another production process, which is repurposed in this way. An additional advantage: the production costs can also be lower. Northvolt and Stora Enso do not yet have concrete figures. Nothing has yet been reported about the possible sustainability gains and cost reductions. Upscaling? Stora Enso has been producing lignin on an industrial scale since 2015 and saw potential for the battery market a few years ago. The forestry company therefore developed Lignode, a lignin-based hard carbon suitable for anode production, and will supply it to Northvolt in the near future. Northvolt focuses on integrating the more durable anode into battery design and the (possible) scaling up of the technology. Northvolt today announced the signing of a $1.1 billion convertible note to finance its expansion of battery cell and cathode material production in Europe to support the rapidly expanding demand for batteries. Investors participating in the capital raise were AMF, AP funds 1-4 (via the co-owned company 4 to 1 Investments), ATP, Ava Investors, Baillie Gifford, Compagnia di San Paolo through Fondaco Growth, Folksam Group, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, IMAS Foundation, Olympia Group, OMERS Capital Markets, PCS Holding, Swedbank Robur, TM Capital and Volkswagen Group. Peter Carlsson, Co-Founder and CEO of Northvolt, commented: “We are proud and thankful for the support and trust from these world-class investors and partners. We will continue to work hard to deliver on the promise we have made to them to build the world’s greenest battery.” With this capital raise, Northvolt has since 2017 secured close to $8 billion in equity and debt to deliver on its plans to establish a supply of sustainable batteries to enable the decarbonization of society. Presently, the company is developing manufacturing capacity to deliver on $55 billion in orders from key customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania, Volvo Cars, and Volkswagen Group. A key aspect to Northvolt’s strategy involves establishing in-house competences and presence throughout the battery value chain, including cathode material production and recycling. Through its large-scale recycling program, Northvolt intends to enable 50% of its raw material requirements to be sourced from recycled batteries by 2030. Battery energy storage is often thought of as a stationary asset; something built into a location to remain static for its lifetime. But not all battery systems are built this way. Voltpack Mobile System is a good example – it’s designed and built for rapid redeployment. Robust against the elements and rigours of transportation, and more than capable of replacing diesel generators operating in the scenario described above. It’s quiet and simple to operate. Zero emissions as standard. Diesel generators come in all manner of kinds, varying in their efficiency, fuel consumption, level of pollution and noise. But even a modern generator used for the kinds of work described above might be a 250 KVA machine, typically operating at low partial loads and consuming 30 to 40 liters of fuel per hour (assuming a 50% load). At that rate, the machine could release 500 kg carbon dioxide or more into the local environment over just five hours of work. That’s about the same amount as mid-range passenger car emits driving 4000 km. And considering the frequency of these kinds of operations, and how widespread they are, these environmental costs add up. Read more: https://northvolt.com/articles/battery-grid-maintenance/

Peter Carlsson is the CEO and founder of Northvolt. The company is currently building a factory in Skellefteå for the production of lithium-ion batteries for, among other things, electric cars. And in June came the news of a partnership between Volvo Cars and Northvolt to manufacture the next generation of sustainable batteries. Peter Carlsson was Purchasing and Logistics Manager at Tesla Motors in California for five years. In his program (Swedish Radio P1), Peter Carlsson tells, among other things, about what he learned at the company. - What power there is in a company that is really guided by a higher vision. Elon Musk did not start Tesla to build a car company, but to help the world get away from its oil dependence. Northvolt is talking about saving the climate crisis through becoming the biggest battery factory in Europe and deliver one battery to one car and that is not good for the climate and the private and public economics. My idea to Northvolt is to use the clever idea with powerswap (https://powerswap.se) and just have a tiny battery in the car to get to the ”electric-swap-station and the big batteries should be stored for actual use, not for standing at a parkingl lot.

Northvolt and Volkswagen Group unveil next step in partnership plans: Northvolt receives $14 billion order as it is selected as a strategic lead supplier for premium battery cells for Volkswagen Group in Europe. Volkswagen will at the same time increase its ownership in Northvolt. The Northvolt Volkswagen partnership will be centered around Northvolt’s gigafactory in Sweden, which will be expanded to achieve further economies of scale, reduced complexity and a better environmental footprint for the product. Northvolt will sell its joint venture share in Salzgitter, Germany, to Volkswagen as the automotive company scales up its battery manufacturing efforts in Europe. Stockholm, Sweden – Northvolt and Volkswagen Group today unveiled the next step in the partnership between the two companies, which was initiated in 2019. The collaboration will place a greater focus on Northvolt’s gigafactory in Sweden, which will be further expanded to support a combined order worth more than $14 billion over the next 10 years, as Northvolt is selected by Volkswagen Group as a strategic lead supplier for premium battery cells in Europe. In total, Northvolt has now secured in excess of $27 billion worth of contracts from key customers. “Volkswagen is a key investor, customer and partner on the journey ahead and we will continue to work hard with the goal to provide them with the greenest battery on the planet as they rapidly expand their fleet of electric vehicles,” said Peter Carlsson, Co-Founder and CEO, Northvolt. The next step in the partnership is the result of a mutual analysis on how to best leverage the strengths and ambitions of each party during the years to come. By consolidating cell production to the Northvolt Ett gigafactory, the partners will achieve further economies of scale, thereby securing the best possible cost and enabling the lowest environmental footprint in the world for cell production. As Volkswagen Group plans to scale up its own battery manufacturing in Europe, Northvolt will sell its share in the joint venture Northvolt Zwei in Salzgitter to Volkswagen. Volkswagen will at the same time increase its ownership in Northvolt. “Volkswagen will continue to deepen the collaboration and partnership with Northvolt. They are one of our key battery suppliers as we make the transition to electric mobility – and there is potential to expand this partnership even further,” said Thomas Schmall, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group Components.
