Not exactly a climate post, but interesting information nonetheless in a fairly technical document. Arguments rage that EVs take hundreds of thousands of kilometres to be better than ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles and their particulate matter is worse because BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) are so much heavier. This PDF - a study written for the UK governemt - covers lots of different kinds of transport from cars to lorries and explains how the different fueling methods fare in terms of cost, environmental damage and more. It should be a useful document to share with anyone trying to share misinformation. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1062603/lifecycle-analysis-of-UK-road-vehicles.pdf

According to a story by Will Evans in Reveal, and cross published here in Grist, Amazon is severely underreporting is carbon emissions, to the extent that it comes in below the emissions reported by Target, an American big box department store chain headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. https://grist.org/accountability/how-amazon-is-drastically-undercounting-its-carbon-footprint/

This is quite bad.It pays to be real since other players need a pace setter especially from a giant firm such as Amazon.

But it is a giant firm known for chatting on taxes, so cheating here is not such a surprise. I agree that it would be lovely, but it seems that lovely is less and less likely - like our chances of survival on this planet...

We were in town (Bordeaux) on Saturday and stopped in at Columbus for a spot of goûter. My wife doesn't drink coffee, so she had a tea and they have her two tea bags, given that it was a big cup. I was very disappointed to see that they were those "wire-mesh"-style bags Starbucks was so excoriated for using. How disappointing.

There is the carbon cost of getting the meat to the UK, there's the monetary cost of getting it to the UK, there's what doing so will do to the UK's farmers and lastly, if you care about none of those things, there's what it'll mean for the meat on our plates. As a consumer that's seen the attached image, you might say that, "oh no, I won't buy Australian (or US) meat but guess what? One of the conditions of meat imports from the US is that the 'country of origin' stickers we're so used to in the EU? They will be gone. Even if the Ozzie sticker remains, how are you going to know when you eat out, get a ready-made meal or go to school or hospital? If you don't know what 'Mulesing' is, look it up. Miles Brignall's story covers Syd Reid's solar panels, installed a year ago, on his south-facing London roof. Syd was reassured by installers and the fact that his immediate neighbour has had solar panels for more than a decade (despite keeping his gas-guzzling Range Rover, I note perhaps erroneously and uncharitably) that it would be okay for him to install them as well. Merton town council was one of many in the UK to declare a climate emergency, but they've told Syd to take them down, on the grounds that Mr Reid's house is in a conservation area (and, rather ominously, that it would be looking into the neighbour's installation as well). https://bit.ly/3GBiZcT

My excellent son, Finn, recently commented that perhaps the sense of urgency at COP26 would be accelerated if the organisers gave delegates a taste of what awaits the planet — perhaps a lack of food or water, or just turning up the heat in the main pavilion. It might seem that an additional 4°C wouldn't make much difference if the ambient temp is at 22°C but add a little more and I'm sure it will make a big difference...

The Guardian's Jonathan Watts, Ashley Kirk, Niamh McIntyre and Pablo Gutiérrez have written a superb article about the risks to the world's economy that could be caused by the imbalance between countries decarbonising industry rapidly and potentially being left with stranded fossil fuel assets that could destabilise the geopolitical situation between net importers (like Europe) and net exporters (like the Gulf states, Brazil and Russia) of fossil fuels. It's really something I hadn't thought too much about but it could turn out worse than the 2008 financial crash. A must-read - https://bit.ly/3q70uId

We do need to consider the economic risks associated with the billions of dollars trapped in assets that can no longer be a useful part of a country's economy. Some of these assets may even require funds to maintain them to keep them safe. Second-hand crude oil pipeline anyone? Its in the perfect secluded spot in Alaska... Other assets can, however, be re-purposed. We need to consider the circular economy. Some of you might find this article about old oil rigs interesting reading... https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210126-the-richest-human-made-marine-habitats-in-the-world

Considering we need to stop growing our economies and actually rapidly shrink them, I don’t think there will be any problem. Especially compared to what we’re doing now, which is basically waiting for our annihilation.

The Fully Charged Plus podcast is great listening (in English) if you want the latest news and interviews with people in industry trying to effect change. This episode sees Robert Llewellyn talking to Volvo's Lars Stenqvist, the Executive Vice President at Volvo Group Trucks Technology. In the 48-minute episode, they discuss battery-electric trucks, hydrogen-powered trucks and even hydrogen as a byproduct from making steel in Sweden. There is also a segment on autonomous vehicles for first-mile, middle mile and last-mile use. It's an episode that makes me very hopeful for the decarbonisation of industrial vehicles. https://bit.ly/3nSgPxJ

Greenpeace has discovered that EDF and Orano are shipping radioactive waste to Siberia for processing - again. Ten years ago, Greenpeace managed to stop EDF from transporting waste to Russia but, since last January, the movement of Uranium has been happening again. In that ten years, not a single ton of this waste has apparently been reprocessed and the stock of radioactive material is building up by 1,000 tonnes a year. if nothing else, will the ships they transport it in be running on hydrogen? No, it will the dirtiest diesel. Nuclear waste is going to be a hard nut to crack for a while yet. Personally, I'm surprised no efforts have been made into firing it at the Sun...
•
135 w
This very good for the climate nuclear fuel can be reused and make more non CO2 emmitting energy. Uranium is 1-3 millions times as energy dense than the specific fossil fuel, IPCC science shows a need for nuclear and the JRC science show, nuclear as good as RE sources or better ( that are already in the green eu taxonomy) GP will be against nuclear energy despite what the science tells us.
•
•

But here the problem is that in 10 years nothing has been done with this waste....

Nuclear waste is a challenge, but not the most pressing one. We need more nuclear power, not more problems for production.

(en français plus bas) We run our rented house on electricity, no gas or other fossil fuels. Last year, because I wasn't satisfied that Engie, our previous supplier, was giving us the best price or the greenest electricity (despite saying they were), I switched to Enercoop. It's a cooperative where the fact that I'm buying my electricity from them gives me a voice in how the company works. I could buy more shares in the company to raise my voice but everyone can be heard. Enercoop is made up of 11 local energy companies under the same banner, all using the green energy source most appropriate for the area. Our "branch" is mostly powered by water (87.5 %), some sun (2.0 %) and the other 10.5 % is provided by onshore and offshore wind. My bimonthly bill (I'd like it even more if it could be monthly) breaks down how much energy of what kind I've used over the course between bills. I've spoken to people working at the company and my exchanges have always been friendly and engaged. I really recommend them if you live in France. When I calculated the switch from Engie to Enercoop, I am paying a bit more but really not much.

During a closed-door meeting today with representatives of civil society, Emmanuel Macron, who had so far remained silent when faced with numerous activist arrests, stated that he did not wish to sign the guarantee for Total's Arctic fossil gas project. This disavowal of Total by the President would never have happened without the mobilization of a large number of activists. This culminated in a spectacular petition presentation in June that 350.org organized with our friends at SumOfUs and Friends of the Earth. The government was forced to hear from the 240,000 signatories of the petition I signed. Without this, the French state would have simply supported this ecocidal project, in total secrecy.

If you have the chance to see it, I thoroughly recommend a new documentary by Emmanuel Cappellin called Une Fois que tu Sais. It's about his personal discovery of the climate crisis and contains many interviews with people working to combat the problem. The documentary is in French but I'm sure it will be available subtitled before too long. It's not a happy watch - we have a lot to do, and not much time to do it - but Emmanuel is hopeful that we can all come together. The QR Code behind Emmanuel is for https://racinesderesilience.org which is still just in French for the time being.

Kevin Keane, BBC Scotland's environment correspondent recounts how our favourite Swede (sorry, Ingmar 😉) has responded in a BBC Scotland interview. The Scottish government has previously described its climate change legislation as "world leading", and includes a target to reach net-zero emissions by 2045. However, ms. Thunberg begs to differ, saying tackling climate change was not as easy as voting for a green party. The 18-year-old went on to say, "Of course there might be some politicians that are slightly less worse than others. That was very mean but you get the point. It's a hopeful sign that people want something that's more 'green' - whatever green means - but in order to solve this we need to tackle this at a more systemic approach." Greta might not go to the COP26 conference. She has said that unless there is equity for vaccinations and travel for poorer countries, she will not attend. Read more: https://is.gd/eCsh92

There isn’t a climate friendly coffee in any university across Scotland, yet every student is led to believe otherwise. All university coffees (millions of tonnes) are shipped unroasted when they are up to 20% heavier to transport, many millions of tonnes of this heavy coffee crosses the same oceans multiple times and when it lands in Scotland it is roasted and sent out again on millions more unnecessary journeys. The same applies to all supermarkets, millions upon millions of tonnes of coffee transported in this way and millions of consumers told they are buying climate friendly coffee when the exact opposite is true. We’ve reached out to Scottish universities and supermarkets about this to be met with silence and indifference. Coffee should be roasted at source and then shipped once, directly to universities, supermarkets or consumers.

The UK Met office, in conjunction with Reading University, has created a set of images representing climate change as a series of vertical bars, with colder temperatures being represented by bluish hues and hotter ones by reds. The more extreme, the more saturated the colour. You can stay at the global level, like the image I chose for this article, or you can drill down to continent, country or an even more local level if the data is available. Have a look for yourself at https://showyourstripes.info/. The image can be downloaded to make a great Windows/Macos backdrop... The Coca Cola company has begun to be more plastic-aware with card packaging for cans and bottles but the cans and bottles themselves are being thrown all over the place. In a report from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), 65 % of all rubbish found on beaches will be from one of these 12 companies - Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, AB InBev, McDonald’s, Mondelēz International, Heineken, Tesco, Carlsberg Group, Suntory, Haribo, Mars and Aldi. As the article states, we need deposit return schemes to be brought back in, if only to allow children to earn pocket money by picking up litter and returning the bottles and cans, just like in the 1970s... In total 3,913 volunteers collected branded items over 11,139 miles, making it the UK’s biggest coordinated cleanup event. SAS recorded a total of 9,998 branded items that were linked to 328 companies. https://is.gd/jWskEU

Agree, Franze is doing much but could do more in Europe and outside. Too much protection to polluting sectors, air/car-transport among others. But also high potential with the Nuclear industry France has. They where country with the highest removal of fossil energy production with the systematic build out of nuclear in France. They where way ahead of time you could say. It's time to expand that more, with hydrogen production desalination with existing nuclear and the build out of new nuclear, they have the knowledge to do it.

Allegra Stratton, the UK's climate spokesperson said this evening that she didn't "fancy" an electric car because she visits family 200-250 miles away and she'd rather stick with the diesel Golf because she's worried that having to stop for recharging would slow her journeys down. The fact that there are several electric cars with a range that comfortably exceeds even her stated maximum of 250 miles seems to have escaped her notice, along with the fact that, in theory, you are not supposed to drive such distances without a break.
