Climate solutions involving the oceans The Cambridge University Centre for Climate Repair is highlighting the relative lack of focus on the oceans (the Earth's largest carbon storage) in discussions of natural solutions aiming to slow climate change and store carbon. In a recent article, former UK Chief Scientist Sir David King and his co-author Jane Lichtenstein point to three issues deserving more attention: - The crucial role of large oceanic animals such as the great whales in cycling massive quantities of nutrients (digested food) within the oceans, which was grossly impaired during the whaling era. Large areas of the oceans are now effectively deserts. - New ways to increase the biomass of near-surface marine organisms, such as plants, animals and microorganisms whose remains become stored in ocean sediments as "blue carbon". - The possibility of increasing cloud cover to decrease absorption of sunlight by expanding areas of ice-free Arctic Ocean and meltwater puddles on the surface of the sea ice. The ongoing use of Arctic sea lanes is adding to this problem by darkening the ice surface with soot from burning fossil fuels. https://theconversation.com/oceans-and-their-largest-inhabitants-could-be-the-key-to-storing-our-carbon-emissions-180901 https://www.climaterepair.cam.ac.uk/

The UK start-up H2GO Power Ltd is patenting a compact, solid-state, nano-particle-based storage solution for hydrogen that is much safer and more convenient than bulky storage tanks. Arrays of individual H2 storage modules can be stacked into a unit the size of a standard shipping container, dispensing with the need for lithium batteries. Surplus renewable energy is directed to an electrolyser on a daily or seasonal time scale. The green hydrogen produced is stored and released on demand under the control of the company's AI-based software. The aim is to create a lighter, cheaper and longer-lasting, utility-scale energy-storage system, with a larger capacity than Li-ion battery systems, making it ideal for microgrids. H2GO's invention is being trialled as part of the energy self-sufficiency programme at EMEC (the European Marine Energy Centre) in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. https://www.h2gopower.com/ https://www.theengineer.co.uk/h2go-power-to-trial-hyai-system-at-emec/

Diapers are commonly used and dumped but they hardly decompose.i have carried out a clean up exercise in the steep decents of Thompson falls Nyahururu twice and during the first time I and a few aides picked up too much old but undecomposed diapers and oftenly I come across many in other areas too.Having them useful in this manner is indeed an amazing innovation.

Until now, USS has been intransigent about its lose-lose strategy, which combined continued investment in polluting companies with crippling and widely opposed demands for increased contributions from academics into their pension funds. Highly vocal protests by deeply embarrassed USS members, including many climate scientists like myself, were loftily ignored. Finally, sanity appears to have dawned. USS is changing its investment-management structure, which will result in an immediate reduction of 30% in associated emissions, with continued annual reductions thereafter. Ironically, its new plan will be cheaper to run: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jan/23/uks-biggest-private-pension-fund-to-shift-5bn-away-from-polluters?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

The deep-water port of Milford Haven, in far West Wales, is the UK's largest energy port, currently handling ~30% of the UK's natural gas imports. It's time we paid much more attention to the "Wood Wide Web": the fungal networks that sequester carbon in soils The networks of mycorrhizal fungi that link the roots of plants (especially trees) underground are responsible for sequestering at least 5 billion tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to the annual emissions of the United States) and possibly as much as 17 billion tonnes in soils every year, in the form of decay-resistant organic matter. These fungal networks feed on sugars exuded by plant roots, returning the favour by supplying the plants with essential nutrients. Soil degradation, resulting from human activities such as agriculture, pesticide or synthetic fertilizer use, deforestation and burning, disrupts their activity. SPUN (the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks) is undertaking the first global survey of these fungal networks in order to understand their role in the carbon cycle and how it can be boosted: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/30/fungi-climate-crisis-ally?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/nov/30/worlds-vast-networks-of-underground-fungi-to-be-mapped-for-first-time?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other https://spun.earth/
