A social entrepreneur, Lakshmi Menon, in Kerala, India, started a project of upcycling PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) scrap to produce lightweight, durable, and washable mattresses which can be used in COVID care hospitals. This project is called Shayya, the Sanskrit word for "mattress", bases on the principle of "best out of waste". “As COVID-19 cases spiked in Kerala, the government ordered every panchayat to set up a 50-bed care centre. This brought in a huge demand for cots, mattresses, pillows, and other essentials. The cost of the mattresses was very high and people did not have enough funds to donate at this time,” Lakshmi explains. Lakshmi found PPE scraps ideal to be made into mattresses as they are clean, fluffy, and lightweight. The plastic content in the scraps makes them waterproof, washable, and reusable for a couple of times. Moreover, the scrap that went directly to the landfills had a new use. It is about time we start acknowledging and appreciating efforts on the grassroots levels of society that help to reduce plastic waste, hence reduce emissions, making 1.5⁰C by mid-century feasible. What a fantastic way to create circularity with usually wasteful products!
