The Swedish company Renewcell has developed a patented process that enables the recycling of cellulosic textile waste, such as worn-out cotton clothes and production scraps, transforming it into a pristine new material called CIRCULOSE®. This company have now been forced to file for bankruptcy. Financial means was required to scale up the business to a profitable level. The largest share holder, H&M, did not want to invest more money in the company and the other Swedish producer of fast fashion, KappAhl, sold most of its shares in Renewcell already in 2021. This shows how little H&M and KappAhl care for the environment. Fast fashion companies like H&M and KappAhl should take their responsibility. A minimum requirement is that the companies support reuse of textile waste. The later actions by H&M and KappAhl are in contrast with the advertisements when entering the cooperation with Renewcell, cf. https://about.hm.com/news/general-2017/h-m-group-invests-in-new--unique-recycling-technology.html , https://hmgroup.com/news/hm-group-and-renewcell-expand-partnership-in-industry-first/ and https://www.kappahl.com/en-US/about-kappahl/sustainability/our-strategy/our-commitments/ . It may be added that Renewcell won last autumn the Nordic council’s environmental price with the motivation: A pioneering solution to recycle and reuse textile waste to new clothes and new products. Renewcell‘s product Circulose was considered one of the best inventions in 2020, see https://time.com/collection/best-inventions-2020/5911418/renewcell-circulose/ . Let us hope that an environmentally friendly company is buying Renewcell and make the required investment to make it profitable!
H&M group invests in new recycling technology
H&M group have partnered with Swedish company re:newcell, whose unique technology recycles used cotton, viscose and other cellulosic fibers into a new, more sustainable dissolving pulp. The pulp can be turned into new textile fibers and be fed into the textile production cycle. The partnership is another step towards H&Ms goal to use 100% recycled or other sustainably sourced material by 2030.

The value of Warren Buffet’s investment company Berkshire Hathaway is close to one trillion dollars and the company has more money than ever available. In Fortune Warren Buffet declares that there are no interesting investment possibilities available at this moment, However, the green company area needs money. This area is an area with large risks, but also with great opportunities. It is a shame that the black oil money Warren Buffet Warren has earned recently has been used to increase his investments in the oil industry. Warren Buffet should focus on good initiatives for the humanity with his money instead of continuing promoting the oil industry. With his wealth and reputation Warren Buffet could really make a difference...both with investments in the green area and with even more charity donations. https://www.businessclass.com/forum/threads/sas-presenterar-destination-unknown.105182/

SAS is now offering tickets to ”Destination Unknown”. The tickets may be bought for EuroBonus points. Maybe the idea is to offer “flights to nowhere”. Qantas airlines initiated this type of travels during the pandemic with a seven hour sightseeing tour and later on continued even with 14 hours flights. For Qantas it was (unfortunately and unbelievingly) a succes and other airlines followed up with similar offers. Independently if the SAS offer is a ”destination to nowhere” or a flight with a short visit on the ground somewhere the offer is reprehensible. Shorter, not necessary, travels – such as weekend travels by air - must be avoided for climate reasons. On top of this, to encourage people to fly without a clear – and for the passengers' important – mission is completely unacceptable. https://www.businessclass.com/forum/threads/sas-presenterar-destination-unknown.105182/

By selling oil and gas Norway had in 2022 saved 12 400 billion Norwegian crowns (NOK) in a public wealth fund. Although the NOK has presently a low exchange rate to the EUR, the value of the fund was in 2022 more than 1 100 billion EUR, corresponding to six times the EU budget for the same year. The fund is owning almost 1.5 percent of all shares in the world’s listed companies. It is intended to be a pension fund for current and future generations in Norway. The fund is only investing outside Norway and mostly in equities, fixed income and real estate. Only 0,1 % of all investments are in renewable energy infrastructure. Ironically enough, to contribute to the transition and reach net-zero by 2050 Norway plans to electrify the oil and gas industry. Another measure is to store large amounts of CO2 under the sea level outside the coast. As regard the wealth fund, it shall be climate neutral in 2050. Presently, only 10% of the companies in the wealth fund’s portfolio have a net-zero target for 2050. The money in the wealth fund could contribute efficiently to the transition to net-zero. In the critical stage the earth is in, it is a disgrace that an oil and gas fund contributes to even more CO2 emissions. We need action now, not in 2050! The money in the wealth fund is a great opportunity for Norway to pay back to the earth by investing in companies actively contributing to the transition to net-zero. One important company category is start-ups with great environmentally important ideas. Such companies are often lacking the necessary means to scale up and market their products and services. (In this connection Norway may have to amend the rule that only up to 2 percent of the wealth fund can be invested in unlisted infrastructure for renewable energy.) Actively contributing to the transition would presumably give a higher earning and an even richer - and at least safer - world for coming generations of Norwegians. There is no time to waste. Sellpy is an internet site for private persons who wants to sell or buy secondhand clothes and other products. In social media it is noticed that since H&M bought shares in Sellpy there are a lot of clothes with H&M brands in the Sellpy shop. The Swedish Consumer Agency has received numerous complaints that H&M Sellpy sells stocks of new H&M clothes. A number of the clothes have been marked “quality assured second hand” and “sustainable shopping”. This is misleading and clearly greenwashing! Also, to sell new H&M clothes in this way motivates H&M to continue with fast fashion and an over production of clothing.

In many countries, such as in the United States, Canada, India, Brazil, Australia and a number of EU countries, it is mandatory with health warning labels (HWLs) on tobacco and/or alcoholic products. In a similar way, when advertising and promoting travels by air and sea CO2 use warning labels ought to be required. This is something that the EU could recommend its member countries to implement. In this connection, it should be emphasized that climate compensation is no solution. There are no carbon neutral airplanes or cruising ships. To stay on the ground, if possible, is the solution.

The Switzerland-based cruise operator MSC Cruises is planning to hold a naming ceremony for its second LNG-powered cruise vessel, MSC Euribia, in Copenhagen, Denmark on June 8. MSC Cruises claims the LNG-powered ship symbolizes its commitment to protecting the oceans, which is why the cruise line selected the port of Copenhagen for the festivities. However, LNG (Liquefied Natural (i.e. Fossil) Gas) is mostly methane, a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that traps 86 times more heat in the atmosphere than the same amount of CO2 over a 20-year time period, cf. https://www.csis.org/analysis/credibility-gap-carbon-neutral-Ing and the ICCT (The International Council on Clean Transportation) and the working paper written by Nikita Pavlenko et al. Consequently, LNG fuel should be avoided. The MSC’s claim “We believe in sustainable cruises and we are committed to responsible travel by continuously pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible at sea” is clearly misleading.

There is an article in the Swedish Newspaper Svenska Dagbladet about the insertion of biofuel in car fuel: https://www.svd.se/utslappsmal-kan-nas--utan-reduktionsplikten . The Swedish goal is that the emissions from the national traffic shall be reduced by 70% by 2030, compared to 2010. To reach this target more cars must be electric, fossile car fuel must be mixed with an increasing amount of biofuel and the use of fossile cars must be disencouraged by means of a raise in prices. The Swedish Administration Agency, Trafikverket, has now in its wisdom found out that if we postpone the date for the reduction of the emissions until 2035, we do not need to insert more biofuel in the car fuel. Also, the representative from Trafikverket declares that as the EU has a more and more unified climate policy in the transport sector, there is “less space for solo play” by a pioneering country. People are complaining about the car fuel prices. Still, historically, based on the Swedish salaries, car fuels are not more expensive today than during the last 40 year. Instead, it is possible to drive longer today based on the same amount of fuel considering that the cars are more fuel effective. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) has not objected against a postponement of an increasing amount of biofuel in car fuel and referred to the need of biofuel to replace fossile fuel for airplanes. Of course, when it comes to international long distance air traffic there is a need for biofuel. However, the goal must be to avoid unnecessary air traffic as much as possible. The most important way to reach this goal is to let the use of fossile fuel bear its own costs, instead of being subsidized as today is the case. One can wonder, in what way may a postponement of the use of an increasing mix of biofuel in car fuel in order to keep the fuel price low contribute to the required less use of the fossile fuel in Sweden? Or is this aim and its consequences forgotten? However, the main question is if the earth is prepared to wait…

It's annoying that the gains we've made in saving out mother planet are being Backwashed by renown industry players the likes of H&M and KappAhl. These two textile companies need to be put to task to take responsibility for their waste.

It is disappointing to see major fashion retailers like H&M and KappAhl not taking responsibility for their textile waste. As leaders in the industry, they should be setting a better example for sustainable and ethical practices. for others to follow.
