This week the Biden administration took another step towards allowing drilling in undeveloped section of the Alaskan tundra. Environmental advocates and Indigenous groups warns the new development risks the fragile and rapidly-warming Arctic blatantly, and says the decision contradicts the Biden administration’s broader climate goals. We don’t have time to continue exploiting our planet for oil and gas. Keep it in the ground. Read more: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/01/climate/alaska-willow-oil-drilling-biden.html

Biden has announced $2.3bn (£1.9bn) to help build infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather and natural disasters. But he stopped short of formally declaring a climate emergency, which would grant him further powers. Mr Biden spoke in Massachusetts as a heatwave brings extreme weather to Europe and North America. Tens of millions of people in the US, across more than two dozen states, are living under heat warnings this week.

I have a hearing impairment and would benefit from the introductory speeches being supplemented with text. A good lecturer / event maker complements with pictures and key opinions.

Very important topic. We will cover the fossil fuel subsidies story by inviting people that know the subject well and also give concrete advice on how we can end this madness. Please help us by sharing this on social media. People need to know that our governments are sponsoring the destruction of our planet.

👹 Something lurks beneath the Arctic Ocean. While it's not a monster, it has largely remained a mystery. 💥 Scientists have found that permafrost buried beneath the Arctic Ocean holds 60 billion tons of methane and 560 billion tons of organic carbon — making it a major source of #greenhousegases not currently included in climate projections that could have a significant impact on climate change in the longer-term. 🧊 The amount of carbon locked into submarine #permafrost is more than humans have released into the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution. 🥶 The frozen sediment and soil currently releases 140 million tons of carbon dioxide and 5.3 million tons of methane into the atmosphere each year — roughly equal to the yearly emissions of Spain. 💣 "This is an example of a very large source of carbon that hasn't been considered in #climate predictions or agreements. While it's not a ticking time bomb, what is certain is that submarine permafrost carbon stocks cannot continue to be ignored, and we need to know more about how they will affect the Earth's future." 👇 Link to the full report in the comments.
