A guide to degrowth - interesting article! “Advocates of degrowth are quick to point out that the idea is fundamentally different from a recession since degrowth is a planned reduction of energy and resource use. A recession, however, is an unplanned event that can exacerbate inequality and reduce wellbeing.” “Ultimately, this is the core insight of degrowth. Right now, we assume that every sector of the economy must grow, all the time, regardless of whether or not we actually need it. A more rational approach would be to think about what sectors we actually need to grow, like public transportation and renewable energy, and what sectors are clearly too big and should be scaled down: like SUV production, private cars, the arms industry, advertising, and so on,” Hickel said. “Huge chunks of our economy are totally irrelevant to human wellbeing. We must ask ourselves; do we really want to pursue aggregate growth if it’s going to put our planet — and our civilization — at such extraordinary risk? We need to be smarter than that.” https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/19/degrowth-pushing-social-wellbeing-and-climate-over-economic-growth.html (Photo credits Getty Images)

It is very surprising that mass damage and destruction of nature is not a crime. That is hopefully about to change as a partial result of the lobbying of End Ecocide. We are not there yet but this a huge step in the right direction. Let´s show @endecocide some climate love and some support! In an amendment to its report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World 2019, the European Parliament has voted to urge “the EU and the Member States to promote the recognition of ecocide as an international crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)”. "MEP Marie Toussaint, long-term campaigner for EU recognition of ecocide, said: “This is a real victory, a first major step towards the recognition of ecocide by the European Union. Member states must now speak out at the ICC and on the international stage. Climate change is accelerating, the loss of biodiversity is leading to planetary pandemics, the sea is rising: let’s move forward fast!” "Chair of the Stop Ecocide Foundation Jojo Mehta says: “This European parliamentary vote is hugely encouraging. The political world is rapidly waking up to what scientists have been telling us for decades and the indigenous world has been telling us for centuries: that humanity cannot destroy the natural world with impunity. There are consequences. We know now that tipping points are being crossed and we have a short time to act. Making ecocide a crime recognises this, providing a practical guardrail to prevent the worst excesses of damage that are pushing Earth’s life-support systems towards breaking point.” https://endecocide.se/english/european-parliament-urges-support-for-making-ecocide-an-international-crime/

This is great and I wish that ecocide should become an internationally recognised crime and International Criminal Court could have jurisdiction over it. You can sign a petition here https://www.stopecocide.earth/become for it

After four years of despair, my heart is filled with hope! Let's show the Biden-Harris Administration some climate love. "These Executive Orders follow through on President Biden’s promise to take aggressive action to tackle climate change and build on the executive actions that the President took on his first day in office, including rejoining the Paris Agreement and immediate review of harmful rollbacks of standards that protect our air, water, and communities." "President Biden set ambitious goals that will ensure America and the world can meet the urgent demands of the climate crisis, while empowering American workers and businesses to lead a clean energy revolution that achieves a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035 and puts the United States on an irreversible path to a net-zero economy by 2050." "President Biden will also sign an important Presidential Memorandum on scientific integrity to send a clear message that the Biden-Harris Administration will protect scientists from political interference and ensure they can think, research, and speak freely to provide valuable information and insights to the American people." Long read but well worth it, lots of good stuff happening: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/01/27/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-executive-actions-to-tackle-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad-create-jobs-and-restore-scientific-integrity-across-federal-government/

I am thrilled to read about the studies at Lund University about the role of inner dimensions and transformation in sustainability. Let's show Lund Unversity Centre for Sustainability Studies some climate love! "Our research on the role of inner dimensions and spheres of inner-outer transformation in sustainability includes theoretical and empirical studies on: mindsets, social values, beliefs, worldviews and associated cognitive/ emotional capacities and virtues, such as awareness, consciousness, compassion, empathy and mindfulness, for improving sustainable governance." "The mission is to relieve suffering and support a more sustainable and just world through a scientific understanding of the mind for societal and planetary well-being." Founded by Professor Christine Wamsler, the Contemplative Sustainable Futures Program envisions a more sustainable, kinder and compassionate world. "I envision a day, when inner, mental work will be seen as an integral part of our daily efforts for local, national and global sustainability. Addressing climate and other societal crises is not only a matter of outer work. Such crises reflect how we relate to ourselves, others, the environment, and future generations. We urgently need to better understand how inner and outer transformation are interlinked, and identify what we can call ‘Inner Sustainable Development Goals’, that is: the inner qualities and approaches that we need to effect change toward sustainability." Sounds great! We definitely need to adopt a new world view if we are to solve this climate crisis and I believe that human consciousness will have an extremely important role to play as well. Lund University might benefit from looking into Nassim Haramein’s work and collaborating in some way if they haven’t already. I wrote a climate love to Resonance Science Foundation just yesterday actually. 💚 Keep up the great work!

Could Amsterdam's New Economic Theory Replace Capitalism? "In April 2020, during the first wave of COVID-19, Amsterdam’s city government announced it would recover from the crisis, and avoid future ones, by embracing the theory of “doughnut economics.” Laid out by British economist Kate Raworth in a 2017 book, the theory argues that 20th century economic thinking is not equipped to deal with the 21st century reality of a planet teetering on the edge of climate breakdown. Instead of equating a growing GDP with a successful society, our goal should be to fit all of human life into what Raworth calls the “sweet spot” between the “social foundation,” where everyone has what they need to live a good life, and the “environmental ceiling.” By and large, people in rich countries are living above the environmental ceiling. Those in poorer countries often fall below the social foundation. The space in between: that’s the doughnut." "Raworth argues that the goal of getting “into the doughnut” should replace governments’ and economists’ pursuit of never-ending GDP growth. Not only is the primacy of GDP overinflated when we now have many other data sets to measure economic and social well-being, she says, but also, endless growth powered by natural resources and fossil fuels will inevitably push the earth beyond its limits. “When we think in terms of health, and we think of something that tries to grow endlessly within our bodies, we recognize that immediately: that would be a cancer." "The city drew up a “circular strategy” combining the doughnut’s goals with the principles of a “circular economy,” which reduces, reuses and recycles materials across consumer goods, building materials and food." "Chemical engineers at UNSW Sydney have found a way to make ‘green’ ammonia from air, water and renewable electricity that does not require the high temperatures, high pressure and huge infrastructure currently needed to produce this essential compound." "In a paper published today in Energy and Environmental Science, the authors from UNSW and University of Sydney say that ammonia synthesis was one of the critical achievements of the 20th century. When used in fertilisers that quadrupled the output of food crops, it enabled agriculture to sustain an ever-expanding global population." "Dr Emma Lovell, a co-author on the paper from UNSW’s School of Chemical Engineering, says" "“The current way we make ammonia via the Haber-Bosch method produces more CO2 than any other chemical-making reaction,” she says. “In fact, making ammonia consumes about 2 per cent of the world’s energy and makes 1 per cent of its CO2 – which is a huge amount if you think of all the industrial processes that occur around the globe.”" "The way that we did it does not rely on fossil fuel resources, nor emit CO2,” Dr Lovell says. “And once it becomes available commercially, the technology could be used to produce ammonia directly on site and on demand – farmers could even do this on location using our technology to make fertiliser – which means we negate the need for storage and transport." https://www.scimex.org/newsfeed/new-eco-friendly-way-to-make-ammonia-could-be-boon-for-agriculture,-hydrogen-economy
