We are NOT moving fast enough. Not even close. 0.002 GTCO2 p/y from Novel (tech) methods. If we are all banking on tech to save us from a 2°C future anytime soon, we best take a closer look. We need aggressive emissions reductions while immediately protecting the natural carbon sinks.

Carbon Capture, and the resulting tech gold rush is one thing. Methane is altogether another kind of beast to defeat... one that doesn't care much about ESG implementations. "By the end of this century, permafrost in the rapidly warming Arctic will likely emit as much carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere as a large industrial nation." I am certainly relieved that the IRA bill has passed and will inject $369 billion into energy and climate change programs, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40% over the next 8 years (2030). HOWEVER, let's not forget that coal, oil, and natural gas received $5.9 trillion in subsidies, just in 2020 ALONE, with near-record emissions in 2021. (US Gov. average subsidies fluctuate around $20B per year) There is not a minute to waste.

Hi Climate friends. Just sharing a free link to an introductory call tomorrow for a leadership class cohort I am currently on week 9 of 12 as it relates to what we are all trying to do here. Unstoppable Conversations September cohort is aimed squarely at Social Impact, Climate, and Justice leaders committed to making a difference in the world and as you are all here for climate, that means you! Take a look here for tomorrow 11:30MT. https://unstoppableconversations.com/lp/learn-what-it-takes-to-make-a-difference-in-the-world If you can't make tomorrow - there are some other times available as well, but I highly recommend it.

The First Street Foundation have already demonstrated the value of understanding climate risk with their first Flood Risk tool, and have now developed a Fire Risk tool to do the same. These tools are effective for long-term planning purposes as well as near-term strategies in order to develop resource adaptations and manage emergency response... saving ecology and lives. Computer modeling and satellite data both have blind spots and require in-situ observations in order to calibrate and validate data sets in order to effectively mitigate risk, and as much in-situ local area data are needed as possible to do this. Until that future exists, understanding the localized risks faced by people is a key requirement and both of these tools provide an excellent viewpoint. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/05/16/climate/wildfire-risk-map-properties.html

As another difficult year wraps up around the world, with so many people unable to return to "normal" yet, it's worth reflecting for a moment on the size of the challenge WDHT have taken on this year. With a successful COP26 presence and US rollout now in the rearview mirror, we hope that the WDHT team can now take a moment to accept thanks from those of us who truly value the voice you have created. Our planet faces unprecedented hardship, with all species under threat, including us humans. In spite of corporate greed, governmental legislative adversity and crippling climate apathy, organizations such as WDHT push forward to find solutions and present hope. This is incredibly difficulty to achieve and deserves heartfelt thanks.

What is the 2°C initiative? We know very little about how climate change is affecting areas at a local level as there is not enough climate data being generated at a fine scale, which is critical to wild areas and the species that live there. The 2°C initiative uses of low-cost mobile sensors in the hands of the vast numbers of recreational outdoor enthusiasts to accurately observe and quantify local climate conditions in natural areas that do not currently have adequate climate monitoring capacity. What is this important? The health and vibrancy of many natural areas are in decline, and a growing body of literature suggests climate change is a driving factor with severe impacts on natural areas. However, such attribution faces uncertainty because there are not enough atmospheric observations in many of these natural areas to accurately quantify their climates. Citizen science observing programs have proven widely popular among outdoor enthusiasts and have matured into a scientifically accepted protocol for data collection. The climate data inadequacy presents an opportunity to engage the public in the gathering of essential climate observations with accurate, low-cost sensors to demonstrate the value of in-situ mobile citizen science to the climate data ecosystem. What is the significance of this project? Climate observations are made at a few thousand fixed locations globally, with natural areas often hundreds of km from the nearest observing station. Critical habitats may extend just a few km and rely on a unique local climate. Our approach creates a dynamic mobile source of climate observations operating in the spaces between the fixed stations. This novel approach allows the generation of new climate observations that, when supplemented to the existing observing data, greatly enhance quantification and attribution of climate change, as well as formulating effective conservation responses. Scientists and conservation managers can use these data to improve ecological models, identify areas of concern and apply resources to adaptation or mitigation. As a dedicated climate advocate, I am passionate about connecting people with our natural environment, and I believe my personal mission aligns well with Crowd For Impact, in an effort to build resilient societies and adaptation in regard to climate change, the effects of which I have personally experienced in the form of major hurricanes and seen the devastating effects of sea level rise, and coral bleaching around the world. As the Executive Director of 2°C, I have met many times with Crowd For Impact to develop a crowdfund strategy that will allow us to generate the needed income to distribute climate sensors to crowdsource data to help scientists fill in the data gaps that exist. Crowd For Impact shares our desire to improve our combined futures through ensuring a healthy climate. I appreciate their efforts and support their vision.

We need accountability. Accenture reports that almost ⅓ of the 1,022 largest companies on European stock exchanges have committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Asserts that even with greatly accelerated climate action—doubling the pace of emission reduction by 2030 and doubling it again by 2040—only 42% of the 1,022 companies would reach their net-zero targets. Full report here: https://www.accenture.com/us-en/insights/consulting/reaching-net-zero-by-2050

@andrew_o_connor_984 Thank you for your comment. My point is to highlight the inadequate time scale and the need for direct and urgent accountability to drive change. It is certainly not to distract from this critical need.
•
132 w
I read the report and I found it to be both disturbing and disappointing. WHY are over two thirds of the largest companies in Europe able to continue trading WITHOUT having net-zero emissions targets and plans? Surely emissions targets should be a legal requirement by now. Large businesses should be MADE to go net-zero or be taxed to "Kingdom Come".
•
132 w
I'm afraid if we wait until 2050 as you suggest it shall be far too late but together we can work without borders where we have one equal voice in the United nations and with one vote each and one voice we can change the world with one voice in ten years but the change will not be easy as nit will be and will all own a share in making sure the world is fit for our children and their children as yet unborn
