I have recently come to the conclusion that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum should be banned. There are several reasons for this, but one important reason is that too much energy is required to create (mine) these cryptocurrencies. The demanded energy diminish the chances to reach the climate targets. Proponents of cryptocurrencies sometimes argue that these cryptocurrencies does not influence the inflation, but that is not true. At the moment Bitcoin and Ethereum also drives the inflation. For instance these cryptocurrencies require twice as much energy than a country like Sweden with 10 million inhabitants use. At the same time the energy that is used to mine these cryptocurrencies comes partly from coal power plants. This has an impact on our climate. For someone that is interested, there was a debate article in todays Dagens Nyheter (one of the leading Swedish newspapers - Political stance is liberal). The debate article is written/authored by the director general of the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FI and the director general of Naturvårdsverket (the Swedish authority for environmental issues). They want to ban mining of cyprocurrencies since https://www.dn.se/debatt/forbjud-energislukande-utvinning-av-kryptovalutor/

"Houston, we have a problem". Space tourism, does not seem to be the best solution right now. Space tourism is, as I see it, a problem, and not a solution at the moment. In short-term space tourism decreases the chances to reach the climate targets - this is obvious. Therefore, before we start sending out "space tourists", we must solve and prioritize the climate issues first. Yesterday, I heard some provocative arguments by an adventurer with a ticket to space. The adventurer argued that space tourism will develop new technologies and increase the interest for natural sciences. Myself, I am very confident, that there are other and better ways to do this. First we have to deal with the most important problem, before escaping them. It is also easier to increase interest for natural sciences and climate issues, than sending out people to space. I guess that there are others that also are suprised by the dysfunctional thinking that is going on regarding space tourism right now.
•

Absolutely. There are more contentious issues in regard to climate matters that need more attention and address than taking trips to space in polluting space vehicles.

I totally agree with you. But if space tourism could be emission free I would change my mind

Yes I agree, space tourism is not what the world really needs when heat waves , drought and other extreme climate changes are happening just in front of us…

BREAKING NEWS. A volcano has now erupted in Iceland after some weeks of increased volcanic activity, Anyone who knows how much greenhouse gases this type of volcanic eruption can cause per year? Less than 1000 years ago there were several large volcanic eruptions in Iceland that lasted for decades. Some researchers report that it is possible that the volcano can last for hundred years, That is not good news for the climate. https://www.icenews.is/2021/03/19/breaking-news-volcanic-eruption-in-iceland/ https://www.svt.se/nyheter/utrikes/seismolog-utbrottet-pa-island-kan-paga-i-flera-ar

Professor Henry Mintzberg on pollution and the Pandemic (2020/2021) In the end of 2020 professor Henry Mintzberg, who is one of the most influential scholars in strategy research, wrote a speculative article about pollution and the Pandemic. As far as I have been told by professor Mintzberg, no publisher wanted to publish his article. This is of course due to the speculative nature of the article. However, it is important to understand that one of the ideas with the article is to allow the speculation in order to better understand the possibilities what is driving the spread of the virus. Still it is likely that pollution can have some negative impact in order to impede UV-light to annihilate SARS-CoV-2 and we still does not know how much all pollution has influenced mortality. The article goes "Beyond Hoping for the Best". According to professor Mintzberg, hoping for the best is not an acceptable strategy. Please nt that there is both a video and an article that can be accessed via www.mintzberg.com. Read the artivle at: https://mintzberg.org/pp

The Environment and Health Administration understand that it looks bad that the city is dumping snow into Mälaren and Saltsjön. Stockholm's lakes, rivers and coasts are heavily exploited by human activity. By 2027 the lakes, rivers and coasts of Stockholm shall reach a good ecological and chemical status according to the EU Water Framework Directive. There is extensive work being done to improve the water quality in the city's waters. Local action programs are created with measures to reduce the historical and current exploitation of the waters. There is also ongoing work to reduce the flow of plastics into the water areas of Stockholm. Nevertheless the city (The Traffic Office) has an exemption from the County Administrative Board to dump snow from the inner city into Mälaren, Saltsjön and Lilla Värtan (the recipients) which, based on the above, seems strange. The reason is that the Traffic Office hasn't found any cleaning technology or alternative methods for avoiding the need to dump during snow-heavy winters. The snow clearing in the city needs to work without fail. Snow from the outer city is placed in different sites on land. Appropriate landing sites are hard to find and the ones that are used are not enough to take all the snow. The inner city's snow gets dumped as there are no sites in the inner city. The Traffic Office tries as much as possible to leave the snow where it is next to the areas that have been cleared, but in the central city it can be difficult to find places where the snow can remain without obstructing mobility and traffic safety. The Traffic Office controls what snow gets dumped and how much of it. Additionally, tests are taken from the snow and the recipient during the winter period. The dumping of the snow doesn't alone cause the environmental quality standards for the recipients to be surpassed. But combined with overflow and continuous deposits of unpurified daywater the snow dumping is one of several reasons for why the environmental quality standards are not reached. It's worth noting, however, that dumping is done during a limited period, and not every winter. The city's goal and wish is still to find functional alternatives to dumping or some form of purification of cleared snow before dumping.

Already some years ago NCC has invented and build a snow melting vessel. To my knowledge it is placed in Oslo and working well. Snow is melded and the water filtered before it runs into the sea.

This is related to the previous post. I wonder if this is a sustainable real estate investment according to ESG classifications if it cannot reach energy class A? A less beneficial classification may create a coercive pressure to replace old classical buildings with modern buildings. I wonder how sustainable is that?

It is very unsustainable to replace old buildings with new ones. Most emissions are from the construction. Much better to improve old building and switch to renewable energy for heating etc. Maybe solar panels on the roof etc.

This post is not really my area of research even though it is related to what I focus on more specifically (i.e. the effects of financial regulations, how to capture information and measure value).. Anyway, I know that the ESG classification is not always that simple to construct in order to determine if an investment fulfil environmental, social and governance requirements or not in long-term. Bear in mind, sometimes the classification can lead to negative externalities For instance right now the EU Commission is considering to classify water powered energy as non-sustainable. I am pretty sure that my opinion is not completely objective, but I am not convinced if the suggested classification is all good and if the EU Commission is completely objective themselves. I can agree that it is not sustainable to harness rivers and establish these power plants in the begining, but all the hydroelectric power plants that are already there should they be classified as nuclear or coal power? I guess not. Another thing is real estate investments. Real estates, especially in the nordics, may be classified as less sustainable as real estates investments elsewhere in Europe, since there is a need for more energy to keep the temperature indoors in the nordics. The result can be that many buildings from 19th and early 20th century with nice architecture, but also with insufficient insulation can be forced to be demolished since the classification will increase the cost to finance older real estate buildings. To build new houses that are more energy efficent may cost less. The problem that the ESG classification may not consider it the environmental effect of building new houses. I must be clear that this is not my area of research and I am not fully read up on these issues, but I wanted to make a post about it. Please comment if you want, but I might not have time to respond to the comments. https://www.nyteknik.se/energi/eu-forslag-skapar-strid-om-svensk-vattenkraft-7005874 https://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=83&artikel=7619884

It is nice to see the blue sky in Åre, Sweden. Please note that at this time of the year it is usually much more snow and it is normally possible to go skiing in the mountain, but it was only a thin layer of snow in the end of November when this picture was taken. In Sweden, this November 2020 has been one of the warmest November months the last century. https://www.smhi.se/klimat/klimatet-da-och-nu/manadens-vader-och-vatten-sverige/manadens-vader-i-sverige/november-2020-varmerekord-efter-varmerekord-1.162898
