BIODIVERSITY REMAINS NATURES STRONGEST DEFENSE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE Biological diversity — or biodiversity — is the variety of life on Earth, in all its forms, from genes and bacteria to entire ecosystems such as forests or coral reefs. The biodiversity we see today is the result of 4.5 billion years of evolution, increasingly influenced by humans. Biodiversity forms the web of life that we depend on for so many things – food, water, medicine, a stable climate, economic growth, among others. Over half of global GDP is dependent on nature. More than 1 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods. And land and the ocean absorb more than half of all carbon emissions. But nature is in crisis. Up to one million species are threatened with extinction, many within decades. Irreplaceable ecosystems like parts of the Amazon rainforest are turning from carbon sinks into carbon sources due to deforestation. And 85 per cent of wetlands, such as salt marshes and mangrove swamps which absorb large amounts of carbon, have disappeared.

Biodiversity loss can immensely cause severe impacts for people.

It's obvious biodiversity has the willpower to reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Do you know that species in the ecosystem are interdependent. The loss of any one due to pollution, habitat loss can have a domino effect and cause biodiversity loss. #ActNow to protect our #ecosystem from collapse. Our survival depends on #biodiversity.

To cut across the climate crisis suitable measures are required, like planting of trees , proper measures of conserving water and control erosion, farming using organic materials and embrace clean energy

I''m sure activists will be lauded in the future but they are being criminalised and painted as 'activists ' when we need everyone together now..humans are our own worst enemy.

Tullow Oil’s challenging multibillion-dollar South Lokichar project in Kenya has become just that bit more complex after TotalEnergies and Africa Oil decided to quit the oilfield development. The long-delayed project aims to tap about 460 million barrels of oil in multiple fields in Kenya’s remote, arid Turkana county, exporting 130,000 barrels per day via an 895 kilometre pipeline to a terminal in Lamu port. We need to phase out oil investments in Africa! Fossil fuels are not an option for us ! No more fossil fuels... This is so good 💯
•
•

This is because of delays in regulatory approvals and inability of the project to achieve its required performance targets which forced them to exit !!

Totally agree. Fossil fuel has no future in Africa. Sun, wind and geothermal is the way forward

Kenya and European Commission have signed a Sh47 billion (€347.6 million) deal for construction of East Africa’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) for electric buses. The deal that was signed during President William Ruto’s tour of Belgium on March 29 will unlock funds for construction of Nairobi Core Bus Rapid Transit Line 3 (BRT 3), which will be used by zero emission electric buses as part of Kenya’s climate change mitigation plan. The line will be fully designed by European expertise with “a strong focus on the highest social and environmental standards”. The Nairobi BRT Line 3 is expected to be operational in 2030 – moving up to 300,000 daily commuters in a safer and more efficient manner. The Government of Kenya will contribute Sh9 billion (€66.3 million) Over the past 10 years, the EU has offered technical assistant to the Kenyan government on transportation matters. South Africa emissions are falling, ahead of a 2025 target,Power plant breakdowns are reducing industrial activity. Output of the climate-warming gases from the world’s 14th-biggest emitter is already falling even though its Nationally Determined Contribution, a target adopted by the cabinet in 2021, only forecast a decline from 2025. But the current constant blockouts of power gives hope and indication of South Africa beating it's climate goals .
