The huge electricity consumption needed to sustain the cryptocurrency is fueling the climate crisis. So, it is undeniable that the digital currency has a definite real impact on the climate. Bitcoin now consumes half a percentage point of the world’s total electricity consumed. This makes the use of the whole of Sweden equal. In fact, Google could run all of its global operations with that much energy, seven times as much. Compared to more traditional online banking services, a single bitcoin has the same carbon footprint as 330,000 credit card transactions. Given the world’s extremely tight timeline for achieving net zero emissions and avoiding a climate catastrophe, the cryptoboom is a big problem. Now, more than a third of crypto mining is happening in the United States. Some countries, such as China, where much of the mining took place before the government ordered the closure of facilities last year, have squeezed the industry, but operations have simply moved to countries with cheaper energy and less regulation. If China was able to do that, America could succeed. Let us encourage the President to take action! Read more: https://www.nrdc.org/ Image source: https://www.theguardian.com/international

The recent IPCC report confirmed that climate change has pushed the Great Barrier Reef corals to their "adaptation limits" and further ocean warming could make their survival impossible. Already more environmental organizations contacted Sussan Ley about the most important report concerning our climate and environment. But we know Ley has seen the report. (the consequences to come - bleached coral) Need to make it clear that as our Environment Minister she can’t hide from her duty to protect the Reef. Not only has Sussan Ley remained silent about the most important report published in her time as Environment Minister, it was revealed that Australian officials attempted to water down the language used about the state of our Reef. Officials urged scientists to say the Great Barrier Reef is “not yet in crisis”. They lost out and a section of the report was correctly titled “the Great Barrier Reef in Crisis”. This is just the latest unscientific and untruthful intervention by the Federal Government, who last year deceitfully lobbied to keep the Reef off the list of World Heritage Sites ‘in danger.’ There is no doubt that the Reef is in danger because of climate change. But, if that scientific fact is formally acknowledged, the Morrison Government's cheerleading and financial support for the expansion of the coal and gas industry will be in the firing line. The IPCC report is a great opportunity to shift this narrative. There is a link between the degradation of the Great Barrier Reef and the Morrison Government’s poor climate policies and support of fossil fuels. (The UNESCO World Heritage Committee and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are heading to Queensland very soon to independently survey the Reef’s health. This will be a massive opportunity for us to pressure the Federal government to take the dire state of the Reef seriously, while the world is watching.) We need to protect the Reef! And we need to shift away from fossil fuels! The fact that the Australian government tried to water down the report really shows how important it is to have independent bodies and institutions to write these reports

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Group has unveiled a € 23 billion electric car package. More than three times as much as it had previously planned. By 2030, the alliance will launch a total of more than thirty new, purely electric models. The new cars will be built on five common platforms. The new plan builds on a € 10 billion project previously undertaken. So the group will spend three times as much money on electromobility in the coming years. “We have coordinated battery technology schedules, which has led to the selection of a joint battery supplier for Renault and Nissan in France, the UK and Japan, among others. And we have defined a common vision for power platforms, ”announced the president of the Nissan Alliance. The group also plans to build a 220-gigawatt-hour battery production capacity by 2030. The three companies last reorganized the foundations of their cooperation in 2020, when they were divided on a regional basis to determine which manufacturer would be more active in which market. MORE: New research from Greenpeace East Asia analyzed the world’s top 10 automakers’ decarbonisation efforts, ranking Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan, Renault, Stellantis, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Finally, the car industry is getting up to speed with electrification. Fantastic! However, normal users still use the car only 4% of the time. We need to get into an efficient sharing economy with electric cars - as well as other means of transport.

The Coca-Cola Company announced an industry-leading goal to significantly boost its use of reusable packaging. As the world’s biggest plastic pollutant, it’s a big step forward. By 2030, The Coca-Cola Co. aims to have at least 25% of all beverages globally across its portfolio of brands sold in refillable/returnable glass or plastic bottles, or in refillable containers through traditional fountain or Coca-Cola Freestyle dispensers. "We continue to put consumers at the center of all we do. One way to do that is by offering sustainable packaging types. Accelerating use of reusable packaging provides added value for consumers and customers while supporting our World Without Waste goal to collect a bottle or can for every one we sell by 2030." - says Elaine Bowers Coventry, Chief Customer & Commercial Officer, The Coca Cola Company. By increasing its use of reusable packaging, the company it promotes a circular economy as refillable containers have high levels of collection and are low-carbon footprint beverage containers, because the container collection is built into the beverage delivery model. The company's 3 main pillars for World Without Waste initiative are: DESIGN: Make all of our primary consumer packaging recyclable by 2025. Use 50% recycled material in our packaging by 2030. COLLECT: Collect and recycle a bottle or can for every one we sell by 2030. PARTNER: Bring people together to support a healthy, debris-free environment. Coca-Cola is one of more than 70 signatories, including multinationals, that recently signed a statement calling for an ambitious global treaty that addresses the issue of plastic pollution. The UK “torpedoing climate action” and “disregarding science” amid reports six new oil and gas fields are to be approved in the North Sea this year. Rishi Sunak said last week he wanted to encourage more investment in new fossil fuel drilling. A new oil and gas field in the North Sea has already been given the green light this year – just two months after the UK held the global climate Cop26 summit. ⚠️#Greenwashing, that “only worsens the climate crisis. It is set to be followed by half a dozen more approvals for fossil fuel drilling this year, according to The Daily Telegraph. Are expected to be approved by the Oil and Gas Authority (@OGA), the UK regulator, and by ministers. There were fears in the Treasury over how the move to net-zero could impact the economy.
