Vietnam has received a 51.5 million U.S. dollar payment from the World Bank for verified emissions reductions, commonly referred to as carbon credits, for reducing 10.3 million tons of CO2 in the 2018-2024 period, local media reported Wednesday, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Tran Quang Bao, director of the ministry’s Department of Forestry, said 80 percent of the sum had been distributed to six north central provinces and the remaining 20 percent would be distributed to localities in the next one to two months. The localities will allocate the money to people and communities that signed contracts for projects to protect forests. Vietnam has 14.79 million hectares of forest areas with a land coverage rate of 42 percent. The forestry production value grows stably at a rate of 4.6 percent with revenue from environmental protection services being close to 11 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 440 million dollars), according to the ministry. Last year, Vietnam, for the first time, sold more than 10 million carbon credits for over 50 million dollars, ranking among 60 countries worldwide with the highest capacity for carbon trade. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/2024/04/vietnam-receives-51-5-mln-usd-from-world-bank-for-carbon-credits/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=vietnam-receives-51-5-mln-usd-from-world-bank-for-carbon-credits

Swedish-Kenyan electric mobility firm Roam has inked a deal with Mogo to finance its Air motorcycle in a bid to accelerate the adoption of e-bikes in the country. The partnership is set to support boda boda riders' access to the Roam Air motorcycle through various financing options from Mogo, an asset financier in East Africa. "We're thrilled to partner with Mogo to tap into the expanding market of boda boda riders eager to transition to electric motorcycles amidst soaring petrol prices," said Mikael Gånge, co-founder of Roam. Under the deal, the e-bike customers will be required to make a deposit of Sh25,000 and then pay Sh707 daily for the next 24 months. Alternatively, they can make a deposit and Sh820 daily for 18 months. Mr Gånge said the e-bikes that will purchased under this deal will have a 12-month warranty depending on the part of the bike that's worn out. The electric bike, which sells at Sh292,000 in cash, he said would be released to the customer immediately after the buyer makes a deposit of Sh,25000 and agrees to settle the balance on the timelines provided. https://www.businessdailyafrica.com/bd/corporate/shipping-logistics/roam-mogo-sign-electric-motorcycle-financing-deal-4577790

Japan said Sunday its experts have held talks with their Chinese counterparts to try to assuage Beijing’s concerns over the discharge of treated radioactive wastewater from the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea. The discharges have been opposed by fishing groups and neighboring countries especially China, which banned all imports of Japanese seafood. China’s move has largely affected Japanese scallop growers and exporters to China. During the talks held Saturday in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, Japanese officials provided “science-based” explanation of how the discharges have been safely carried out as planned, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry. A 2011 earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima plant 's power supply and reactor cooling functions, triggering meltdowns of three reactors and causing large amounts of radioactive wastewater to accumulate. After more than a decade of storage in tanks taking up much space on the complex, the plant began discharging the water after treating it at least once and diluting it with seawater on Aug. 24, starting a process that’s expected to take decades. https://apnews.com/article/japan-china-fukushima-wastewater-discharge-10907cf4618cfc499eae164897a88724?utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&utm_medium=AP&utm_source=Twitter

The Kenya Wildlife Service has dismissed fears that the World Rally Championship will have negative environmental effects on Hellsgate National Park in Naivasha. The wildlife agency said mitigation measures had been put in place to protect the wild animals including some endangered species of vultures during the weekend event. Environmental groups have in the past raised concern over the move to host the rally in the world renowned park, warning that it would have adverse effects on the animals. But KWS assistant director Joseph Dadacha said robust measures had been put in place in the national park, where the final ceremony will be held on Sunday. Dadacha downplayed fears that dumping of solid waste would affect the park, adding that this had been addressed. “We have enough portable toilets and garbage bins placed strategically along the spectators’ zone, with enough staff manning them and collecting any waste,” he said. Dadacha said that they had put in place measures to address the issues of pollution and littering in a bid to protect the habitat of the park that is home to a variety of wild animals. “We have designated parking points for those coming to watch the rally and we are calling on the spectators to avoid dumping waste in the park,” he said. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2024-03-31-safari-rally-will-not-pollute-hellsgate-park-says-kws/

Last year I liked their measures in terms of waste collection etc, I was among spectators, but I felt in one way or the other that animals, birds that live in those habitats must be really stressed by unusual noise, helicopters passing on top of them as they cover the event. Still I noted some were blocked from crisscrossing naturally to the events venue to curb risks and security. In the future more measures should be considered and brought to books. I noted a lot of fossil fuels companies are there to show their might, and they release a lot of pollution in the air, which at the end pollutes the clean air in that area and it's environs.

Although the animals are not having the best time in their habitats, atleast some measures are being taken to ensure that they have an easier time.

A new air quality report found that Canada had the most polluted air of any North American country in 2023, as critics say the Trudeau government's scattered response to the disaster likely made matters worse. "2023 marks the first time in our report’s history that Canada had such high levels of PM2.5," Natasha Ganes, Public Relations Manager for IQAir North America, told Fox News Digital. "Wildfires in the summer of 2023 devastated air quality throughout not only Canada, but also the United States as well due to transboundary haze and air pollution that drifted across borders." "During May of 2023, PM2.5 levels in Alberta surged almost ninefold compared to the same period in 2022," Ganes added. "In fact, most of the 10 most polluted cities in Canada in 2023 were in Alberta due to those fires." Canadian Prime MinisterJustin Trudeau has continually sounded the alarm over climate change, even saying in 2021 that "climate action can’t wait" and committing to "creating a green economy" while trying to "cut pollution and build a cleaner future for everyone." A spokesperson for Canadian Minister of Emergency Preparedness Harjit Sajjan told Fox News Digital, "The government of Canada believes in science. Climate change is real and knows no borders. Denial is no longer an option." "That is why Canada has taken several steps to prepare for and adapt to climate change and its unrelenting impacts," the spokesperson said, noting that 90% of the country’s forests are owned and managed by respective provinces, and the federal government coordinates with them in response to fire crisis. https://www.foxnews.com/world/trudeaus-bungled-wildfire-response-made-canada-most-polluted-country-continent-critics

The national treasury is now set to release a total of Sh7.4 billion to counties as part of the grants towards climate change mitigation program under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program in the current 23/24 financial year. The program that is funded by the national and county governments as well as the World Bank and the Governments of Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden will help reverse negative effects of climate change. National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Prof Njuguna Ndung’u says the government with support from partners is keen to ensure that climate finance reaches the most vulnerable communities, where the devastating effects are already evident. Njuguna says the funds will be used to assist counties in developing and implementing tailored climate resilience strategies in response to risks identified by communities in sectors such as agriculture, water, and natural resource management. “I have seen the program, resources will be provided but remember it is a program for performance, we want results,” he said. Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya who spoke during the event in Kisumu attended by participating counties from the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) says counties must be able to show tangible results so as to demonstrate the contribution to bettering the country’s ecosystem. Tuya says the program is unique since it will encompass every Kenyan to participate in combating effects of climate change since it has no boundary. “We have agreed that we are going to work closely with the 47 counties to scale up the program,” she said. The Ministry has put in place the requisite policies, strategies and plans to rally all efforts in the country towards the common goal of achieving a low carbon climate resilient development pathway. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2024/03/treasury-to-release-sh7-4bn-to-counties-in-climate-change-mitigation/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=treasury-to-release-sh7-4bn-to-counties-in-climate-change-mitigation

China has unveiled guidelines to strengthen environmental management by tailoring regulations to specific regions, a move experts say marks a significant step toward institutionalizing environmental protection. The guidelines, issued by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council this month, clarify objectives and priorities for region-specific environmental management, according to Liu Yi, a professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Environment. “This signifies a shift from pilot programs to nationwide implementation and now the establishment of a comprehensive institutional framework,” Liu said. Previously, China had released plans for zoning environmental and ecological factors like water, air, soil and noise. However, a lack of a unified national system hampered coordination, Liu said. The new guidelines break down the distinction between developmental and environmental functions for land use. They propose enforcing “red lines” for ecosystem and environmental protection, as well as for rational resource utilization. The land will be divided into three categories: priority protection, critical control and general control. Each category will have tailored management strategies based on specific environmental conditions and risks. “This division considers ecological and environmental factors, administrative boundaries and spatial planning,” said Wan Jun, deputy dean of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning. Priority protection will encompass crucial areas like natural reserves, water source zones and wetlands. Critical control will target regions facing conflicts between development and environmental protection, such as areas with high resource consumption, pollution and degradation. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2024/03/guidelines-promote-greener-china-china-daily/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=guidelines-promote-greener-china-china-daily

Forests provide an array of benefits and ecosystem services, including water provision, food, medicine, shelter, energy, and fuelwood for millions of people in this region. Forest loss and degradation lead to socio-economic losses, especially the loss of the said benefits and ecosystem services. Forests are also important for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 22.7 percent or about 674,419,000 ha of Africa is forested. Closer home, Kenya is among the countries in the world with a forest cover of less than 10 percent of the total land mass. The national forest cover currently stands at about seven percent falling short of the constitutionally required threshold of 10 percent tree cover. Last September, African leaders parleyed in Nairobi for the Africa Climate Summit and, among many other recommendations, emphasized the need for nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation. ADVERTISEMENT. SCROLL TO CONTINUE READING. We are in dire straits, and the picture is not rosy. Continued forest loss further aggravates the triple planetary crisis of biodiversity, pollution, and climate change. The world is currently far from reaching its climate targets, with temperatures steadily heading towards almost 3°C of warming compared to pre-industrial levels. Vulnerability to climate shocks due to rising global temperatures has become the norm in the region, resulting in dire economic consequences from the recent droughts and floods that have plagued the region. Forests play a large role in our ability to fight the vagaries of climate change because of the massive amount of carbon they emit when they’re degraded or cleared. Higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are disrupting natural weather patterns, causing harm to the Earth’s climate. To mitigate against this dire situation, countries have already adopted the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, popularly known as ‘REDD’+ framework to protect forests as part of the Paris Agreement which will help in reducing human pressure on forests that result in greenhouse gas emissions at the national level Today marks the International Day of Forests and sadly we celebrate the day when human activities are destroying the world’s forests at an unprecedented rate, despite being vital to supporting life on Earth. Sub-Saharan African countries whose lives and economies are tied closely to land, and the environment have experienced substantial forest cover loss. Due to the increasing human population coupled with the declining state of the environment including climate change, forest communities have been faced with few livelihood options, leading them to opt for illegal logging, and conversion of forests to cropland and settlements. Before starting any project, it is vital to ensure that the process is community-oriented, with the meaningful participation of all stakeholders. This includes landowners, local communities, marginalized groups, disabled individuals, and the youth. By adopting such an approach, all parties will be actively involved in securing food security and a better livelihood for everyone. To illustrate this, two decades ago, Wildlife Works delivered the world’s first certified Kasigau REDD+ Project which protects over 200,000 hectares of dryland forest for a diverse population of endangered wildlife that also co-exist with humans. The successful model in Taita Taveta County offers a market-based solution that embeds community development into wildlife conservation. So far, the project has enabled about 100,000 people to access clean water, 30,000 students to access education through scholarships, and employment to over 400 people. Accelerating the transition to carbon neutrality and creating resilient economies and sustainable landscapes can be achieved by enabling both indigenous and local people to be at the forefront of protecting forests.

President William Ruto has said his administration will not allow people to graze or cultivate crops in forests. Speaking in Chepseon market in Kericho, the President said the practice is likely to lead to the destruction of forests. “You have heard about climate change. Kenya was almost destroyed by adverse weather conditions just the other year and it was because of environmental degradation,” he said. You want to graze in the forest. What do you want to go to do in forests? I am told those who go to graze in the forest carry an axe along,” Ruto said. The President wondered why people graze in the forests with axes. “I am told that when the cows are grazing, you are busy cutting down trees. We will not allow that to happen,” he said. The issue of farming within forests is a sensitive topic in Kenya. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/realtime/2024-03-15-i-wont-allow-anybody-to-graze-or-farm-in-forests-ruto/

The United Nations-backed Green Climate Fund (GCF), believed to be the world’s largest multilateral climate fund, has committed 100 million U.S. dollars for a climate action investment program in Somalia over the next year. The funds, announced Tuesday in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, during a visit by Mafalda Duarte, GCF executive director who led the first-ever GCF delegation to Somalia, will help bolster the country’s climate resilience efforts, according to a statement issued in the Somali capital Tuesday evening. Duarte said Somalia is the second most vulnerable country to climate change in the world, despite contributing only 0.03 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions, the statement said. “The interlinked impact of climate change and lack of security has had a devastating effect on people, causing some 43,000 excess deaths in 2022 due to drought, displacing more than 6 million people, pushing Somalis away from their homes into overcrowded towns and cities,” Duarte was quoted as saying in the statement. Recurrent drought and regular flooding lead to failed crops, loss of livestock and chronic food insecurity problems in Somalia, she said. “GCF is committed to working with the government of Somalia and its partners to better address the extreme vulnerability the country and its population face,” Duarte said. Duarte said the GCF is ready to commit to a strategy of investments and readiness support of over 100 million dollars to Somalia by mid-2025, as well as a long-term commitment to empower Somalia to develop country-priority projects and subsequent investments. While in Somalia, Duarte met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other senior government officials, and launched an investment pipeline including a project that will provide affordable, reliable off-grid energy access to unelectrified populations in sub-Saharan Africa. The program prioritizes capital investment and technical support in Somalia, accelerating disbursements of over 3 million dollars for 2024-2025, with funding from the GCF and other funders, the statement said https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/2024/03/somalia-to-get-100-mln-usd-from-un-backed-green-climate-fund/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=somalia-to-get-100-mln-usd-from-un-backed-green-climate-fund

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has announced a fresh crackdown on illegal dumping sites to be led by police officers drawn from the National Police Service and the county enforcement team. The new exercise will be targeting the private service providers who collect garbage and dump it on illegal sites within Nairobi county including roadsides and market places as well as estates. Mr Sakaja who was speaking during a meeting with the security chiefs led by the Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei in Nairobi said the new collaborative effort with police officers will help maintain order and dignity in the city. “These are the private service providers who are paid by the people living in the estates to collect garbage. Once they are paid and they realise there is too much traffic when they are taking the garbage to Dandora, they just dump it on the roadside at night with their trucks. They do not gain anything by getting all the way to Dandora. They will go dump it at night in a field or on the road so that they can do more trips. If we assist each other we will reduce the city from being dirty.” Mr Sakaja said. He has also affirmed the commitment of the county government to resolve the garbage menace within the city. “We want a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity. This is what the national police service wants, the national government administration and opportunity. We have already done a number of things to help the county government achieve this goal,” he added. The new announcement comes after city residents decried the rise of illegal dumping sites in Nairobi. Most of the dumpsites are located within city estates full of foul smell and posing a health risk to the residents. Some of the dumping sites are also located on the roads creating chaos and causing disorder. https://ntvkenya.co.ke/news/sakaja-announces-crackdown-on-illegal-dumping-sites/

TRANSITION FROM FOSSIL FUELS TO CLEAN WILL NOT BE A WALK IN THE PARK,BUT WE GOT THIS. It has been unsettling to hear reports that January 2024 was the hottest January on record and the earth’s temperature in the year leading up to end of the month rose by more than 1.5C. If global warming is accelerating, then efforts to address it require similar momentum. When we glance back at the outcome of COP 28, two words spring to mind — phased defossilisation. Two hundred nations, including prominent petroeconomies acknowledged that a shift away from fossil fuels is necessary but there was less unanimity on how steep the gradient of the phase-out should be. The reality is that we may not be able to transition as rapidly as the just-stop-oil activists would like because there is no simple kill switch for this. A key concern is whether there is sufficient, ready and accessible non-carbon energy to bridge the gap that would be left by hydrocarbons. No country can afford an implementation gap during which production and revenues decrease due to inadequate supply of renewable energy. Dismantling the oil-based infrastructure will also produce waste which means that safe disposal must be provided for. The delicate issue of compensation for owners of oil-based assets or the provision of subsidies for producers and consumers of clean energy will also need to be clarified. There is a lot to be done but we need to pick up the pace if we are to gain meaningful traction in the battle against harmful emissions.

The government removed five different taxes in the electric motorcycle-manufacturing sector, including the 16 per cent VAT on electric motorcycles. Electric-powered motor companies like Opibus, Roam Air, Ampersand, and STIMA, are among those leading the shift in the country. The government has pledged to support the acquisition of electric motorcycles in the country to a high of 200,000 pieces by the end of 2024, with President William Ruto encouraging local manufacturing. According to the President, spare parts, batteries and components needed for their manufacture will be tax-exempt. “If you want to manufacture the batteries in Kenya, the cost will be low,” the President said during a recent visit to Roam Park, an electric motorcycle assembly plant in Industrial Area, Nairobi. Meanwhile, KenGen, Kenya Power and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) are keen to ensure the shift to e-mobility is well supported. According to EPRA, Kenya has enough power generation and power capacity to sustain 100 per cent electric mobility transition of motorcycles in the country, estimated as 6,000 MW and 300 MW, in relation to the consumption and power, respectively Kevin Otieno, a boda boda operator in Umoja estate has joined the growing electric bikes revolution in Kenya, by replacing his noisy petrol motorbike with a more quiet electric bike. One of the major reasons for the shift, Otieno said, was to save on operating costs and make more money. This, even as he feels the need to be part of the global change on EVs which is seen to be the quickest means to decarbonise motorised transport.

The thirst for Stanley cups raises questions on how green stainless steel water bottles really are. The reusable water bottle industry has had many darlings. Exactly how many depends on how far back people want to sift in their shelves or junk drawers. Millennials will remember the ubiquity of wide-mouthed Nalgene bottles. Then, stainless steel containers made by Hydro Flask, S’well and Yeti all enjoyed their time as the status symbols du jour. Now, the juggernaut of the moment is a hulking 40 oz. tumbler made by Stanley that comes in a kaleidoscope of colors to match people’s style and vibes. The cup is a favorite among social media influencers. An entire category of content on TikTok has emerged around the beverage containers, with some collectors flaunting entire walls adorned with shelf after shelf of the colorful cups. New releases of colors or exclusive collaborations with other brands have incited the kind of frenzied chaos normally reserved for Black Friday shoppers on the hunt for the cheapest TV deals. It’s the kind of explosion in popularity that helped catapult a 110-year-old company from $70 million in annual sales before 2020 to $750 million in 2023. On its face, the Stanley tumbler does make good on its environmental promise. The cups are known for their durability, with the company touting that its products are “built for life” and “never need to be thrown away.” One viral post on TikTok seemed to prove that claim, with a woman showing that her Stanley cup survived a car fire intact — with ice still in it.

The Sh12.7 billion proposed cement plant at Chasimba in Kilifi South sub-county has been met with sharp criticism with conservationists terming the project as environmentally disastrous. The proposed project, seeks to develop a cement-integrated plant at Pingilikani-Chonyi Area in Chasimba location that would manufacture clinker and Portland cement for commercial and other industrial use. But conservationists have warned that the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study report for the proposed project lacked comprehensive assessments and therefore posed a threat to the existence of rare species in an area they termed as ‘ecologically sensitive’. But Nature Kenya argues that the project has not demonstrated an understanding of the site or local population and any commitment to safeguard ecosystems or save species and their habitats. “The ESIA indicates scientific unfamiliarity as it contains carelessly worded generic statements such as “species will be relocated to Arabuko Sokoke forest”, or “the site is devoid of any eco-sensitive area”, or “impact on biodiversity and wildlife is minimal”. The experts ignored the threatened plants, geological features and cultural values of the Chasimba rock outcrops,” Matiku noted. The organisation called on Nema to stop mining activities in Chasimba and areas around it as they termed it as geologically and ecologically fragile The organisation also called for comprehensive surveys of African Violet and other rare plants within the coastal region. https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/environment-climate/article/2001489577/conservationists-oppose-planned-new-cement-plant

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg on Friday was cleared of a public order offense over a protest at an oil and gas conference in October. Thunberg was arrested Oct. 17 outside the InterContinental London Park Lane hotel after joining hundreds of protesters at an “Oily Money Out” demonstration organized by Fossil Free London and Greenpeace. Oil executives had been meeting inside the hotel on the first day of the Energy Intelligence Forum, formerly known as the Oil and Money conference. Thunberg appeared at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court this week alongside two Fossil Free London protesters and two Greenpeace protesters. All five defendants pleaded not guilty after being accused of breaching Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 by failing to move their protest to a designated area. The judge in the London court ruled she had no case to answer, and also acquitted the other defendants. “The prosecution evidence is insufficient for any reasonable court to properly convict and I exercise my discretion to acquit all five defendants,” Judge John Law said to applause in the gallery, according to Reuters. https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/climate-activist-greta-thunberg-cleared-public-order-offense-london-oi-rcna136983?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma&taid=65bd312e0ac2a30001db1dde&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

CLIMATE CENTER WARNS IF HIGHER THAN USUAL TEMPERATURES IN HORN OF AFRICA The majority of the Horn of Africa is expected to be warmer than usual between February and April, heightening the likelihood of extreme weather events that could impact the region’s vulnerability, a regional climate center said Thursday. Temperatures in some countries with arid areas, including Kenya and Somalia, may reach 40 degrees Celsius, causing heat stress, said the Climate Prediction Center of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a regional bloc, in its latest forecast. The high temperatures would follow a period of El Nino rains that caused heavy flooding and displacement, it warned. Besides the warmer temperatures, the Nairobi-based institution said that some countries in the region would further experience wetter than normal conditions as the climate crisis intensifies. The countries expected to experience wetter conditions include parts of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, southern South Sudan, much of Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti. “High chances of wetter than usual conditions are indicated over equatorial and north-eastern parts of the region from February to April,” said the climate center. The Horn of Africa recorded harsh effects of climate change last year, experiencing the worst drought ending in March 2023, followed by El Nino rains from October to December. Some 23.4 million people across the Horn of Africa faced hunger, of whom 5.1 million children were malnourished, according to the World Food Program. On the other hand, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 479 people were killed, and more than 5.2 million people were affected by flooding caused by El Nino rains between October and December 2023 in Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Burundi and Ethiopia.

The Climate Investment Funds (CIF), managed by the World Bank, announced on Wednesday that it has extended $46.39 million (Sh7.38 billion) to Kenya to enhance the country’s utilization of renewable energy. Luis Tineo, the interim CEO of CIF, said that the concessional funding will support investments aimed at improving electricity dispatch and grid stability, enabling Kenya to harness more solar and wind power sources. According to the Ministry of Energy in Kenya, nearly 90 percent of the country’s energy comes from renewable sources, with 45 percent from geothermal and 26 percent from hydropower. The ministry said that this plan will aid Kenya in its goal to achieve 100 percent clean energy in the power system by 2030 and position it on the path to achieving Net Zero by 2050. Keith Hansen, the World Bank’s country director for Kenya, said that Kenya is a frontrunner in the transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2030, ensuring universal access to electricity at the earliest. “The World Bank is supporting the government of Kenya in developing a smart and flexible energy system that makes these ambitions possible.” https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/2024/02/kenya-receives-sh7-38bn-from-world-bank-for-renewable-energy-expansion/

President Joe Biden has picked senior White House adviser John Podesta to fill the international climate policy role being vacated by John Kerry, a senior administration official confirmed Wednesday. A second senior official said Podesta will maintain his current portfolio advising the president while adding the climate duties. “We need to keep meeting the gravity of this moment, and there is no one better than John Podesta to make sure we do,” White House chief of staff Jeff Zients said in a statement Wednesday. “John has — and will continue to be — at the helm of driving the implementation of the most significant climate law in history.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/john-podesta-succeed-john-kerry-us-climate-envoy-rcna136646?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma&taid=65badb880c31d10001e28a9f&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Kenya is being positioned to become one of the countries that will produce biojet fuel following the operationalisation of a Ksh16 billion plant, in Kwale County. In a statement, Investment Principal Secretary Abubakar Hassan Abubakar stated that the petroleum product will be produced through the refinement of castor oil, which is extracted from castor seeds. The government, with the help of Enrico Travelini - the Italian investor behind the Kwale plant - had already begun facilitating the plantation of castor with a seedling farm covering 200 hectares in Naivasha. https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/97016-govt-hints-jet-fuel-production-after-investor-pumps-ksh16b-castor-oil-plant?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AK
