The next bad joke coming from Germany: the parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, led by Minister President Manuela Schwesig, establishes an environmental and climate protection foundation to enable further pipeline construction. Natural gas is part of the climate problem and not a sustainable bridging technology. Olaf, not only does your action harm our planet - it also subsidizes Putin’s army in the killing of innocent civilians, not to mention what impact that war has on the environment. Of course it is easy for me as a Swede to tell you this as I won’t suffer from no gas to heat my home or electricity shortages. But I belive many of the wise and intelligent Germans would sacrifice some of these things if it could save Ukrainian lives and stop Putin’s madness. And if you ask other countries you might get help mildering the effects of such a ban. You ought to stop the money going to Putin now! It is your time to decide what the future history books will have to say about your role.

These words and pictures reached me this morning from one of our Ukrainian staff members in Kharkiv. What is happening in Ukraine is devastating in so many ways. But for us at We Don’t Have Time, it is also horrifying on a much closer and personal level. Seven members of our tech team are Ukrainians. That’s roughly 1/4 of the We Don’t Have Time staff. Based in – and working from – Ukraine, these colleagues of ours have done and are still doing a tremendous job in developing our app and all of its functions. Now they’re stuck in a war zone – while still trying to work. In this acute phase of the crisis, one of the fastest and most effective ways to help them and their fellow countrymen is through organizations working on the ground in Ukraine. Therefore, we would kindly ask you – our partners, members, and followers – to donate money to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, earmarked for the crisis in Ukraine. By using this link, your donation will also be doubled. The Swedish billionaire Roger Akelius and his foundation have committed to match every UNHCR donation fundraised via Sweden in March. The invasion of Ukraine is not a conflict between countries, it is a conflict between people and corrupt leaders financed by fossil oil and gas. The right thing to do is stop financing those leaders by going fossil-free. This will also save us from planetary breakdown, as described in yesterday's alarming IPCC report. Because while the war rages on, so does the climate crisis. If you believe in a fossil-free future, just as I do, please create, agree on, and share climate reviews on our platform. It is an easy and effective way to make a difference. // Ingmar Rentzhog, founder & ceo WeDontHaveTime.org

QuantumScape has announced that it will build a pilot plant in San José, California. Called QS-0, the plant is expected to be capable of producing over 100,000 units of solid-state cells per year. According to their researches, the solid-state technology can help improve the range of electric cars by up to 80 per cent compared to today’s lithium-ion cells. The world's biggest diesel engine factory in Tremery, eastern France, switches to make electric motors instead of diesel. From less than 10% of output in 2020, electric motor production at Tremery will double to around 180,000 in 2021, and is planned to reach 900,000 a year - or more than half the plant's peak pre-pandemic output - by 2025. Investors: Take notice! This will help a lot to speed up the transition! This target will have an instant effect on all investments in the sector. In the plan unveiled on Friday outlining the Oslo administration's climate ambitions for the rest of the decade, the government is set to increase the total cost of CO2 emissions to a ceiling of 235 USD per tonne in 2030. Oil and gas companies currently pay $94 USD per tonne of CO2 emitted from production on the Norwegian continental shelf — made up of payments for EU Allowances under the bloc’s Emissions Trading System, and Norway’s own carbon taxes. This total will increase to 235 USD per tonne by 2030 (according to 2020 values), regardless of the EU carbon price at the time. Data centers already consume vast amounts of energy given the increased demand for digital infrastructure. Energy that in many places around the world comes from fossil sources. Dropbox sets a clear goal for 2030, but I'm pretty sure they could achieve 100% renewable energy much faster if they just wanted to. As a comparison, Google are already operating with 100% renewable energy. Let's keep the pressure up on the IT industry to do even better! Earthsight reports that Ikea has bought wood that comes from illegal logging in Ukraine. Harvesting took place at 109 sites in the Ukrainian part of the Carpathian mountain range. According to the report, bears, wolves and lynx live in the region, and the harvest was reported during April to June when the forest should be untouched so as not to disturb the wildlife. According to Earthsight, the data on these felling have been confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities. Ikea claims to do a lot to be climate friendly. In their most recent sustainability report they write: “We have only one planet with limited resources. Pressure on forests, fisheries and agri- culture, loss of biodiversity and wildlife...” Ikea fails to take responsibility over their production. As one of the biggest wood users of the world they are not doing enough. 8 years ago Reuters reported that Ikea had set a goal to plant more trees than they used by 2020. 2020 is now, and as far as I can tell they have not achieved this goal. Just set up new ones for 2030 and its all good? No! What good are goals for the future if you dont hit them. We don’t have time Ikea. Saturday’s strong winds could spread the fires to the remnants of the nuclear plant and the equipment that was used to clean up the disaster, said Kateryna Pavlova, the acting head of the agency that oversees the area, in a telephone interview. “At the moment, we cannot say the fire is contained,” Ms. Pavlova said. The Exclusion Zone Management Agency is trying to protect critical infrastructure in the Chernobyl zone, such as the plant itself and the so-called “graves,” or parking lots of abandoned, highly contaminated trucks and tracked vehicles that were left from the original disaster, officials said. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/11/world/europe/chernobyl-wildfire.html

Scientists at the Florida Aquarium in the US reproduced corals from the Atlantic Ocean in a lab for the first time. This is so amazing!! 😍🦋💫💓 . . They mimicked the natural conditions that signal corals to reproduce, like sunsets and moon phases. . . Climate change and disease have devastated the coral reef off the coast of the Florida Keys — the third largest coral barrier reef in the world, and the only one in the US. . . For two days in a row, scientists oversaw the spawning of pillar coral, which is almost extinct after a multi-year disease outbreak that left clusters of male and female coral too far apart to reproduce. . . "It's quite possible that we just had our last wild spawning of pillar coral this year," Keri O'Neil, the aquarium's senior coral scientist, told CNN. "But with the success of this project, as a scientist, I now know that every year for the foreseeable future we can spawn Florida pillar corals in the laboratory and continue our work trying to rebuild the population." . . The team plans to raise the baby coral to maturity in the lab & hope to plant lab-grown corals in the wild to restore the dying reefs. . . Of course, the best way to fix the corals is to S.T.O.P polluting the oceans but #TogetherWeCan. 💞💫
