Trees are like people 1. Trees are like people. They want the same things we want. They want to be around each other. They get hungry and eat from the soil and drink the water in the soil. They hug the soil tightly so it doesn't get carried away through erosion by flood waters. 2. Trees are like people. They want to give birth to seedlings and raise those seedlings till they become big trees. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, well, neither do seeds. They fall around the parent tree and create a small community called a forest. 3. Trees are like people. The big trees shelter the small trees when it rains. They support vines on their backs and help them reach the sky. They provide a place for birds to build a home and provide a playground for monkeys. 4. Trees are like people. They breathe in and out, just like we do! They are the lungs of the planet. They inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. We inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. The magical thing is that the tubular branching pattern of our lungs resembles the root system of many trees. 5. Trees are like people. They are ambitious because all trees aim for the sky. They stand upright with a crown on top and limbs stemming from a central trunk. 6. Trees are like people. Most trees are made up of more than 50% water. Similarly, an adult person is made up of approximately 60% water. 7. Trees are like people. They also communicate. They do this through the fungus in the soil called mycelium. The fungus forms webs or networks in the soil that the trees use to send messages like warning each other of diseases. 8. The crazy thing is, we need trees, but trees don't need us. They only need each other. Trees love dancing to the beat of the wind. They keep each other warm when the wind blows too hard because well, they are wind breakers. (Laughs) 9. But people, weeuh, people are not like trees! People are selfish and self-centered. People will let you down. People will lie to you and tell you they'll be there but they will show up two hours late or worse still, not show up at all. A tree tells you I'll be here, you can come back 20 years later and that tree will still be there, mmhhh (flex) 10. People are not like trees. People go into forests all the time and take whatever they want. They cut down 100 year old trees and feel nothing. You'd never hear of trees going into people's homes and taking their children or raiding their fridge or sleeping in their beds (which are made from trees by the way). 11. People are not like trees. Some people are going to parliament to change the forests conservation and management bill so that they can give themselves plots in forests like the Ngong forest which is partly in Karen (hint, hint) or Karura Forest which is in Muthaiga. 12. People are not like trees. People in Nyandarua want to cut down trees in the aberdare forest so that they can create a dairy farm. While in Kisii, some people want to cut down trees in Nyangweta Forest to build a sugarcane farm, a factory and a power plant. This is after giving Kisii university land in the same forest. 13. I'm not saying that all people are bad, there are good people too. Some people are even friends of trees. People who fight for trees like community forest associations. But just like with people, there are good trees and bad trees too. 14. Good trees are indigenous trees. Trees that are native to a habitat. Plant trees, better yet, grow trees. But whatever you do, don't plant Eucalyptus trees because they pose a serious threat to our water bodies. 15. Eucalyptus trees are responsible for draining large amounts of water. They have a high transpiration rate which means they draw in a lot of water which they subsequently lose to the atmosphere. 16. Trees have a right to exist. The Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016 makes it an offense to fell, cut, take, burn, injure or remove any trees or forest produce from public forests. 17. Trees make our environment better. When we cut down trees in cities, we create a heat island. That is why its usually hotter in the Nairobi CBD and Eastlands estates but its cooler in Kileleshwa and Runda estates. The difference is with the trees. So grow trees, cherish trees and they will take care of you, your children and their children.

Not only that, women nurse their children more than men and all difficulties like fetching water during dry outs is vested upon their heads.

Due to this fact ... That is why indigenous communities should be empowered and protected so that they can be able to protect the remaining World's biodiversity

The indigenous communities remain very sentimental in protecting nature and their efforts should be well recognised and be given the necessary support by the respective governments.
