The name of the Houdini brings back memories of popular magic shows and the legendary magician Harry Houdini. A few of the famous magic of Houdini were to escape from bondages of hand calf or from threats of being buried alive in live shows. The spectators loved and cherished the way everything was performed in front of their eyes. Surprising the spectators were the key to success for the magician. Rapid glancing of videos uploaded in link of Houdini Sportswear with exciting, embedded messages bring back similar elements of surprises. 1. Fierce battles over IPR (International Patent Rights) among different parties are common in todays ' world. In this world, this company is supporting introduction of open-source environment for their product category. 2. In this era of increasing sales targets, this company is boasting of making durable products. Longer shelf life of apparels is surely a block in making room for new clothes by consumers and consequently for hitting higher and higher sales target by wearable selling company. 3. In this time of " being first" and "enjoying fresh -est products", this enterprise is trying to promote circularity, which may harm the good will of their own products. 4. This enterprise is also advocating for the ecocide law ( Note: The news about ecocide law actually glimmered the curiosity of current author of this post about this company. There are also five other companies who are advocating for same cause, but language became barrier in watching works of SPP. Rest shall be watched soon) . 5. And lastly, they are doing good business. Escaping from well tested patterns of wearable business demand passion, courage, creativity and innovation. Producing apparels and advocating law for ecocide can lead to conflict of tasks for a textile unit. By embracing these challenging tasks, this company is showing paths for successful sustainable business, with or without any magic. Watching full videos were difficult because of serious buffering issues, which needs to be sorted out.) https://app.wedonthavetime.org/profile/houdini_sportswear

We are open for climate dialogue and would like your review. | Swedish outdoor brand Houdini Sportswear, an odd band of scientists, artists, designers and adventurer, is on a quest to reimagine the future of circular sportswear. As a company led by women, a trailblazer in sustainable innovation and a pioneer of circular business models, Houdini keeps challenging the norms of the outdoor industry. Ever since the early nineties, when Houdini evolved from a project among climbing buddies into a company, responsible business has been their way. With the passion, determination, planning, and execution of mountaineers, Houdini has taken on the challenge of designing its business to become a force for good. On its extraordinary journey towards regenerative, Houdini is building a co-creative community for open-source innovation and sharing of knowledge, in addition to providing state-of-the-art circular sportswear and inspiration for people to reconnect to nature.

Electrolux and Houdini Sportswear are expanding their collaboration by opening a hub in Houdini's new flagship store in Stockholm. In the hub, Houdini's store staff and customers will be able to refresh, wash and improve used garments with the help of Electrolux washing and drying machines. This is an important step in extending the life of clothes. In Houdini's new store there are areas for Care and Repair as well as a second-hand area under the name Reuse. The idea is to extend the life of clothes and offer alternatives to traditional ownership. The store also offers Rental, where the consumer has the opportunity to rent their clothes instead of buying. In the store, there is also a kitchen developed in collaboration with Electrolux, which is intended as a place to hang out, talk and exchange experiences. “With the new store, we want above all to build relationships, which is a contrast to most of what happens in the clothing industry today," says Eva Karlsson, CEO at Houdini. Houdini CEO Eva Karlsson sharing design principles and way of working at the online business conference by Climate Reality Europe - Business Fit For 1.5. Transform your customers into care takers. Use design questions such as: “Does this product deserve existence?” “Will it age with beauty?” 150 billion items are produced yearly in the fashion industry. 60% end up in landfill during first year. Average use is 10 times. Houdini apparel are worn 100 times more, can be bought second hand, and if it ends up in nature it will be broken down and become part of nature. The planetary boundary framework is guiding Houdini’s fantastic circular way of working.

‘We acknowledge that all life is vulnerable and therefore under threat. We acknowledge that concern for nature implies a concern for greater justice: Our way of life affects in particular the poorest among us, indigenous peoples, and future generations.’ Well done Houdini! A big goal has been reached in the environmental work. As I visited their store today, I saw the sign saying: 100% of the fabrics used by Houdini this season are either recycled, recyclable, renewable, biodegradable, or Bluesign certified. Houdini’s ambition is to change the textile industry from the ground - into a circular system where long lasting products can be used, repaired, reused, and then finally become new resource. They also give me the option to rent my skiing outfit - online or in stores. No other brand that I know of does that. Way to go! More here: Houdinisportswear.com/en

A circular economy requires community, and communities are built through storytelling "In the apparel business, steps taken to optimize the customer experience don’t always align with the planet’s best interest. But thanks to pioneering companies applying circular economy technology and design principles, things are beginning to shift. The circular economy prioritizes practices such as regenerative design, restoration of products and a shift toward materials with lower carbon emissions. The aim is to eliminate waste through innovative technology and design. Products are designed to be disassembled and reused rather than traditionally disposed of. Consumables within a circular economy are optimized for a safe, non-toxic return to the biosphere and can be traced through transparent supply chains. While the fast fashion movement is at odds with these principles, some brands are distinguishing themselves by prioritizing a more circular approach. As one example, Swedish apparel company Houdini Sportswear has built a reputation for its biodegradable clothing. Its designers think long term: even after a garment no longer can be used, the materials should be fully compostable, rather than disposed of in a landfill." The share of our collection that consists of natural fibers is increasing, but we’re not talking about going “back to nature”. Natural fibers are constantly developed using new technology and the new wool fabrics look like nothing we’ve seen before. Everything from our light, densely woven Wool Shell to the highly breathable and airy Wooly Treemerino. We all have to question the old truths about wool and other natural materials. "Natural fibers are constantly being developed using new technology" Niklas, one of the gardeners at Rosendal is tending to the Houdini clothing compost. Are natural fibers more sustainable? We wish we had an easy answer but it’s hard to say anything in general. If natural fibers are not blended with synthetics, they are biodegradable which means that they don’t contribute to plastic waste or microplastic pollution. But if we include other environmental issues like climate change, water use, chemical use, land use, ocean acidification, overfertilization or biodiversity, the image becomes more complex. Add animal welfare and work environment and we have a jungle that’s hard to navigate even with the best intentions. There can also be big differences between different producers of the same raw materials. Read more about the environmental impact of different fibers in our Planetary Boundaries Assessment, page 49-55. Natural fibers are sometimes more sustainable than synthetic and sometimes not, depending on what you look at. But including raw materials, production, transportation, usage and disposal, all textile production has environmental impact. That’s why we design our products to last as long as possible and that’s the reason why we offer clothing rentals, second hand sales and repair services. The bottom line is that regardless of what raw materials we use, we need to use the resources as carefully as possible. "Natural fibers can return to nature as long as they are not blended or treated with synthetics or treated with hazardous chemicals." End of life solutions Natural fibers can return to nature as long as they are not blended with synthetics or treated with hazardous chemicals. All our garments in natural fibers can be composted, as long as you cut away the details like zippers, cords etc. If you have a good compost at home, a shredded up wool garment usually decomposes in 6-12 months. That being said, you can always return your worn out Houdini garments to us. The textiles can often be repurposed before they are ready to go back to the soil. Wool can also be recycled, but with degrading quality with each recycling, similar to paper. The Houdini clothing compost at Rosendals Garden in Stockholm. Rosendals Garden and the world's first clothing compost In the fall of 2018, we opened the (to our knowledge) world’s first compost for worn out sportswear at the beautiful Rosendals Garden in Stockholm right across the water from Houdini HQ. The purpose is to have a permanent test lab for our natural clothing line. We want to be able to see with our own eyes how our natural clothes can transform into healthy soil which becomes nutrients for flowers, fruits and vegetables. It shows the magic of circular design in a tangible, visual and often delicious way. We are immensely proud of our partnership with Rosendals Garden and we see it as an example of how the future of circular economy can be designed. Naturals vs synthetics So what about natural fibers and synthetic? Which one is the best? The answer is that they are good for different reasons and fit different purposes. Synthetic fibers are usually stronger than natural ones and can be engineered to fit specific demands. It’s also easier to design waterproof materials in synthetic fibers since they usually don’t absorb water like natural materials do. Our natural fabrics in wool and Tencel have other qualities. They have a touch and way of adapting to the body that synthetics can’t match. In terms of sustainability, they also have different pros and cons. Natural fibers are biodegradable, but synthetics usually last longer and can be recycled without losing quality. We always consider all the different aspects and choose the right material for the right garment. It’s also a matter of personal taste. Some people like synthetics and some prefer naturals. The beauty of nature To sum it up: We love natural materials. Aside from the performance and sustainability benefits, natural fibers have tactile qualities that are hard to match. The touch against the skin. The look and the way they age over time. The way they move silently. There is also a poetic beauty in using pure natural materials in clothes that are designed to be used in the outdoors. And when we are done with them, they can return to nature and become nutrients for something else to grow. Read more about our sustainability work on the Houdini website. What materials are we using? At Houdini, we use two natural fibers exclusively: Merino wool and Tencel™ Lyocell. These two fibers have many benefits, both in terms of performance and sustainability. Merino wool: A fiber with magical qualities Merino wool is a fiber with almost magical qualities. It provides fantastic insulation on cold winter days but it also feels cool against the skin in the summer. It’s naturally antibacterial, keeping the garment fresh longer than any other fabric. It also stays warm even when it’s wet. These characteristics make merino wool a given foundation in any natural performance clothes. Anyone from North Sea fishermen to 18th century explorers can testify to the qualities of wool. The wool we use is always traceable and always mulesing free. Tencel: Wear the forest Tencel™ Lyocell is a sleek and strong fiber made from cellulose, a natural compound that build up plants and trees. Tencel provides a cool feeling against the skin and is highly breathable. It can also take up moisture very well. At Houdini, we use several blends of Tencel and merino wool. It gives the wool a nice drape, add texture and acts as reinforcement is some material constructions. Tencel is produced in a very sustainable way, using fast growing FSC certified trees. The chemicals and water used in the production can be reused and circle back to a rate of over 99%. Tencel™ Lyocell is produced in Lenzing, Austria and marked with the EU Ecolabel.

The Houdini Menu In 2016, we initiated a project to test the purity of our natural garments. We let our wool base layers go through a normal garden composting process. The soil was then used to grow vegetables that ended up on the plates in a gourmet restaurant. From worn out clothes into a fine dining experience. The goal was to show the beauty of circular design and to test if our clothes would actually decompose and leave nothing but healthy soil. Please join Monday’s webinar on ecocide law for business leaders. Info and registration here: https://www.ecocidelawalliance.org/webinar-may-31st-8-8-40-cet/ "It is well known that regulatory frameworks that are long term and international are positive for the business sector, since we then can adapt and invest with commitment and speed. Being international, they can create a more level playing field for businesses operating on the global market. In addition, from experience I know that a tight and clear framework becomes a driver for creativity and innovation. A designer thrives under such circumstances. Innovation cultures flourish under such circumstances. This leads to new smarter ways of solving challenges, realizing untapped opportunities and more sophisticated ways of doing business. Ecocide law could soon be such a framework and I strongly promote it. Ecocide law will foster a systems perspective where one needs to understand and take responsibility for one’s entire operations’ effects on eco systems. As most businesses rely on numerous supplier partners in complex often global value chains, ecocide law will be an enabler -providing a common and improved baseline and the opportunity for us to collectively raise the bar for our sustainability work. It will also foster a precautionary principle. Whether regulatory or corporate, decisions will have to be based on scientific facts and knowing that for instance the introduction of a new technology or shift in source of raw material or regulation is the right way to go. The state of our planet and it’s eco systems of today - with a destabilized climate, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification and novel entities including chemicals and micro plastics - is an effect of not having a common understanding and framework for our relation to and responsibility for the living system that we depend upon and are part of. Imagine our world today, had we regulated Ecocide as we did genocide, some 50 years ago. This brings be to my last point which is more cultural than anything else. Our relation to the natural world, its precious resources and the essential values it brings - fresh water, the air we breath, the food we can grow or harvest thanks to microbes and pollinators - not to mention our fellow species that we share this planet with. We would have fostered an entirely different relation to nature - one based on respect, interdependence and gratitude. It is about time we start cultivating that relation now. There is really no time to waste and there is So. Much. To. Gain. Knowledge. Love. Beauty. Life. We owe it to ourselves and future generations." ~ Eva Karlsson, CEO of Houdini Sportswear

Thank you for following us and liking what we do! With Ecocide as an international crime, persons of superior responsibility could then be held personally liable. This can stop the worst cases of destructive activities from happening both to the living system on which we depend and most likely contribute greatly to addressing climate change. Many of the sources for coal, gas and oil would be more expensive when extra safeguards for the environment need to be put in as part of their production. This would then speed up the transition to better alternatives. If you want to know more, follow us in linked in or on ecocidelawalliance.org

Hello WDHT community! We are Houdini, the sportswear brand on a quest to reimagine the future of circular sportswear. We have come far in the transformation we envision but as a company we believe we can move beyond zero and become a positive and regenerative force in society and for the planet. It’s our obligation, or we have no business running a business at all. Since the early nineties when Houdini started to evolve from a hidden secret in the climbing community into a company, responsible business has been our way. With the passion, determination, planning and execution of mountaineers, we took on the challenge of designing our business to become a force for good. Never compromising. Always smiling (almost). Our purpose and vision is about inspiring and enabling mankind to reconnect to nature, to lead a healthier and happier lifestyle in partnership with nature, to evolve as individuals and form a prosperous society on a thriving planet, for us and future generations. This is why we work hard to provide state-of-the-art products and services designed for the great outdoors. This is why we innovate and develop technologies that work with nature rather than at the expense of it. This is why we connect and build our community together with conscious, active and engaged people like ourselves worldwide. Swedish outdoor wear maker Houdini aims to make its product line 100% circular by 2022. CEO Eva Karlsson tells us how. Houdini’s journey began almost 30 years ago, when Lotta Giornofelice, a skiing and climbing instructor, began to make practical fleece innerwear for herself and a few friends. The project quickly snowballed — so to speak — into a full line of stylish, minimalistic sports and outdoor wear made from sustainable and, eventually, recycled materials. Now Houdini has committed to be 100% circular by 2022. Climate & Capital Media had an insightful chat with Eva Karlsson, CEO of Houdini, who won the NMC The Swedish Association for Sustainable Business Award for Sustainable Leadership in 2018. https://www.climateandcapitalmedia.com/a-chat-with-houdini-the-swedish-sustainable-outerwear-brand/

I remember reading Half-Earth by E.O Wilson during my exchange year in Boulder, Colorado. Living close to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, having my morning coffee overlooking the Flatirons really gave a sense of reason to reading that book. How could one not want to protect half of the earth's surface, with all its beauty? Jump to today. As COVID-19 is terrifying countries and getting all media attention, deforestation in the Amazons has surged and might even break last years record-breaking devastation. As fascinated I was reading Half-Earth, as provoked I become when reading the about the Amazon. No, protecting half of the earth's surface will not be enough to fight and reverse climate change. But it's a good start. Therefore, I encourage and support Houdini's 'Regenerative Lifestyles Initiative'. An initiative that sets to protect half the Earth’s land and sea in order to manage sufficient habitat to reverse the species extinction crisis and ensure the long-term health and resilience of our planet. Houdini presents a unique marketplace to shop used Houdini gear, exclusively through Instagram: https://lnkd.in/d7A6TCv. Here followers can buy used gears directly through their official sister account. By doing this, Houdini makes it easier for all people to access high-quiality gear at lower price, at the same time as they prolong the life of their clothes and reduce the need to buy new clothes. No clothes deserve to be abandoned - great gears get used says Houdini and I couldn't agree more. More apparel companies should follow this lead and offer a channel to buy their used gears and clothes. Clothing is identity and this allows us Houdini-lovers to buy new clothes and proudly wear our gears without causing any harm to the environment.
