Tesla, the electric car company run by the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, revealed on Monday that it had bought $1.5bn (£1.1bn) in bitcoin and said it might soon accept payment in the popular but controversial cryptocurrency. News of Tesla’s investment in bitcoin sent the digital currency soaring 14% to a record high of $43,500, a 300% increase on this time last year as cryptocurrency investment has moved into the mainstream as global interest rates remain at record lows. A study by researchers at the Technical University of Munich and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology examined how much power is consumed by computers used to generate bitcoins and process transactions. The virtual currency bitcoin is responsible for the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions as a city like Las Vegas or Hamburg and efforts to reduce its climate footprint should be considered, researchers said Thursday. Tesla’s moto is to accelerate the sustainable energy transition in the world. Buying Bitcoins and promoting it, doesn’t Tesla accelerating carbon emissions thus being bit of a climate hypocrite? Do you agree? It would be very interesting to hear the answer on this one. Elon Musks companies are using renewable energy. Most Bitcoins are mined by fossil energy.

I just saw this post on LinkedIn by David Duckworth, a solution to encourage blockchain technologies to use renewable energy: “And here we are - finally our beta launch of Rowan Rewards is going live, and I couldn’t be prouder! These little beauties will count the energy produced by roof top solar whilst contributing to the validation of transactions on our low powered - low carbon blockchain. 50 households will benefit from 10p per KW/h of energy the produce. It won’t effect their feed in tarrif. They won’t need to switch provider. 10K units out the door in the next 12 months. Solar just became profitable again.” https://www.linkedin.com/posts/david-duckworth-rowan-energy-3983a1b0_solarpv-renewableenergy-solarenergy-activity-6778568858673397760-Q2aF

Tesla said in a comment “updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximise returns” , that means it is no longer good enough returns of keeping their money in the savings accounts. Simply they have just become greedy and opportunistic. This is probably the first sign of Tesla drifting away from the sustainability goal.

In his first 15 days in office, President Joe Biden canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, pledged to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies from the federal government, and started the process of unwinding Trump’s disastrous environmental legacy. And now a trio of Democratic lawmakers wants Biden to declare a “climate emergency” as soon as possible. Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, along with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, introduced legislation on Thursday that would require Biden make such a declaration. The bill compares the action needed on the climate crisis to the wartime mobilization during World War II and urges Biden to declare an emergency under the National Emergencies Act, thus unlocking more than 100 additional presidential powers to tackle the crisis. “It’s past time that a climate emergency is declared,” Blumenauer said in a statement. “This bill can finally get it done.” To read more: https://grist.org/politics/in-a-new-bill-sanders-and-aoc-press-biden-to-declare-a-climate-emergency/ This is about time⏰⏰⏰!! S&P has warned 13 oil and gas companies, including the some of the world’s biggest, that it may downgrade them within weeks because of increasing competition from renewable energy. On notice of a possible downgrade are Australia’s Woodside Petroleum as well as multinationals Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Imperial Oil, Royal Dutch Shell, Shell Energy North America, Canadian Natural Resources, ConocoPhillips and French group Total. S&P said it was also considering downgrading four large Chinese producers – China Petrochemical Corp, China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, China National Offshore Oil Corp and CNOOC. The rating agency said it had increased its risk rating for the entire oil and gas sector from “intermediate” to “moderately high” because due to the move away from fossil fuels, poor profitability and volatile prices. @wedonthavetime I could not find S&P on the organization list, so I picked world bank to spread the news. Let’s push the agenda, push the Word Bank and IMF to help and influence to accelerate this trend. Are you with me?

The EU is fighting climate change through ambitious policies at home and close cooperation with international partners. It is already on track to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for 2020, and has put forward a plan to further cut emissions by at least 55% by 2030. By 2050, Europe aims to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent. European Green Deal Climate action is at the heart of the European Green Deal – an ambitious package of measures ranging from ambitiously cutting greenhouse gas emissions, to investing in cutting-edge research and innovation, to preserving Europe’s natural environment. First climate action initiatives under the Green Deal include: European Climate Law to enshrine the 2050 climate-neutrality objective into EU law European Climate Pact to engage citizens and all parts of society in climate action 2030 Climate Target Plan to further reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 By June 2021, the Commission will also review and, where necessary, propose to revise all relevant policy instruments to deliver additional greenhouse gas emissions reductions. In early 2021, the Commission will adopt a new, more ambitious EU strategy on adaptation to climate change in order to strengthen efforts on climate-proofing, resilience building, prevention and preparedness, ensuring that businesses, cities and citizens are able to integrate climate change into their risk management practices. A public consultation will inform the design of the new strategy. At international level, the EU will continue to lead international negotiations to increase the ambition of major emitters ahead of the United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow (COP26). Toshiba Corp. said Wednesday it will stop taking new construction orders for coal-fired power plants, in a strategic shift toward cleaner, renewable energy to curb global warming. The decision in an updated medium-term business plan released in the day comes as the trend toward creating a greener society through substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions is gaining traction. Toshiba said it aims to halve greenhouse gas emissions related to its businesses by fiscal 2030, but will still complete existing orders for coal power plants at home and abroad. "Clearly, there will be a paradigm shift in the energy sector globally. As a result, we have decided to stop receiving orders for coal-fired thermal power plants that emit large amounts of carbon dioxide," Toshiba President and CEO Nobuaki Kurumatani said during an online press briefing. Kurumatani said demand for coal power plants has been declining, adding that Toshiba will seek to more than triple its sales from the renewable energy segment over the next decade. The renewable energy segment, which includes solar and wind power, earned 190 billion yen ($1.8 billion) in fiscal 2019 and its fiscal 2030 target is set at 650 billion yen with 160 billion yen in investment. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has vowed to bring greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 and U.S. President-elect Joe Biden also made the same pledge during campaigning. Good, but I will still ask Toshiba to make a comment on how they will carbon compensate the existing orders that they will honor. We can’t ignore that.

This is a positive step towards combating climate change and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
•

True! You have to have energy, no coal, how will they compensate when there's nothing to drive you're economy if not coal?
•

I am telling you, write this down, one-day Africa will export its excess clean solar electricity to Europe. It is blessed by the sun needed for the high solar efficiency. Netherlands started talking about connecting electric grids with Africa using undersea high-band cables.

Here in South Africa, who is a 3rd world country coal power plant's are our energy source and it's not reliable. Although we not contribute to the large carbon dioxide emissions, wind power and solar panels are a luxury to most people living in Africa! To be part of the global commitment, solar and wind power should be more affordable to the everyday person!
•

Wind and solar are getting more and more affordable sources of energy even cheaper than coal some places. That is also one of the reasons renewables are so attractive choice even one looks from a complete economic grounds. South Africa and few other African nations are doing quite well on solar!
