Ain’t that lovely - jumping on the night train to wake up on the way to a ski resort. This is the way. The Swedish Meteorological Institute changes the reference period when temperatures are compared with the average. The old reference period was 1961-1990 and the new ones will be 1991-2020 instead. To me, this seems completely incomprehensible. We know that the climate is significantly more affected by global warming after 1990. If we compare today's weather data with data from a period already affected by climate change we will not see the change! This will mislead the public about climate change. I find this decision very outrageous. Talk about "the boiling frog". I demand a very good explanation from SMHI how they could motivate this decision! Please agree and share this climate warning! According to the world meteorological organisation WMO, the current normal period, that is 1991-2020, shall be used. That means that SMHI uses the normal period 1991-2020 to for example tell if the latest summer was especially cool or warm. If we study climate change and its long-term development, on the other hand, WMO has decided that it is the normal period of 1961-1990, what they have defined as the reference normal period, that should be used. Therefore, it is the period of 1961-1990 that SMHI will use going forward as our primary reference period when we study how the climate changes. This is to allow us to compare with previous analyses and knowledge that is based on the period of 1961-1990. Read more about normal periods in "Kunskapsbanken" at smhi.se (in Swedish): https://www.smhi.se/kunskapsbanken/klimat/normaler/vad-ar-normalperioder-1.4087

I think this is a very important topic. Please also assign this campaign below on the same topic adressed to the World Meteorolical Organization, WMO, who in 1930 decided that the normal periods should be changed every 30 years. Now we know better. This is not a good idea due to climate change, so please reconcider your recommendation WMO - https://app.wedonthavetime.org/posts/89f9730b-8eba-4e94-a7c6-476f955c3990

A question to SMHI: If you use other reference periods for climatologists, why don't you have the same reference for us, "ordinary people"? You could use this new period for community planning if you like but don't use it in weather reports in the news. Just don't.

It is evident that fossil-based operations has no place in the future. Despite this, only a third of the investments of the Swedish government's recovery package consists of so-called green investments, while investments in the fossil industry constitutes the other two thirds. We are in the midst of a burning climate crises, where emissions need to reach zero as soon as possible to avoid an escalating and uncontrollable global warming. We don´t have time for fossil investment. Magdalena Anderson: stop funding the fossil industry! https://sverigesradio.se/sida/artikel.aspx?programid=406&artikel=7599294&fbclid=IwAR363fyTsKh7UfAi78V9g8cccqMlOAm9ggvfdMXoo9lGBEAxrfD0td5uXek

Taking the train to your exchange studies whenever possible can reduce emissions a lot compared to flying. However, train travel is today often both more expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, the universities should financially support students who choose to take the train to their exchange studies and also support them with knowledge about how to book trains and best routes. Students can also help by sharing experiences and inspiring others for example by blogging about the train ride on the university´s web page. It should be easy and inspiring to do the right thing.

Hello Emma, I am a part of klimatstudenterna-KTH and currently we are focusing on strategy and policy implementation to reduce student and business travel emissions from a lifecycle perspective. If your local group wants to collaborate we can discuss the future prospectives in order to influence flying behaviour at the university level. Thanks.

Hi Saurav! That is awesome. I´m in the national board, but we would love to hear about what you come up with at KTH (post it in samarbetsrummet on Facebook?), and if you have any ideas on how we can help with this on a national level.

Oatly has started typing out the climate impact of their products and are calling out to the rest of the food industry to do the same. Great idea to help consumers choose climate friendly foods! Let's give them some love and encourage the rest of the food industry to follow! 💪🌍

(sv) Tack för er support! Fanstatiskt att se att så många konsumenter är engagerade. Nu hoppas vi bara att industrin hör uppmaningen och följer efter. (en) Thanks for your support! Fantastic to see so many consumers committed. Now we just hope that the industry will listen and follow.

Wow. This is really a great initiative. Norrsken House has Oatlys info next to the coffee machine. it will have a great effect on the climate if every coffee drinker in Sweden is switching Milk to Oatley or similar products in their coffee. Personally, I think Oatly taste better in the coffee compared to milk. I still drink milk (mainly in food) but not so much anymore.

Yes, this is a really great initiative! I actually thought of this earlier today and was planning to create a climate love campaign for exactly this myself. But I was too slow I see. This needs all attention it can get. It would not only be a great tool for consumers but also an eye-opener for many people. Being confronted with these numbers evey time you go grocery shopping I think would really help people realise the large impact of their diet. I wonder who will dare to show their numbers...

Universities do environmental science and produce knowledge, but oftentimes don't act as if it is real. In Sweden, they are among the worst emitters of government agencies. If they won't adapt to the demands clearly stated by their own scientific evidence, how can they except other to? It's time we change that. Climate Students is a movement and a network of students who have mobilised to transform the unsustainable ways of our universities. As scientists, scholars and intellectual authorities, they are key actors in the struggle to save our future. It's time for them to act. We, their students, can make that happen by combining our voices, skills and energy. Our goal is to make them start taking their own science seriously and help them reduce their emission. By doing so, they will send a strong signal to the rest of society to do the same. Last October, a small group of students at SLU, in Uppsala, called out to students all over Sweden to mobilize. After less than three months we had Climate Students groups at ten universities. And more are joining in. Now we call out to students all over the world. We are in a crisis and everyone must act. We choose to dig where we stand. Students of the University of Helsinki, we call upon you to mobilize and give life to our movement in your country. You will form local groups, dedicated to transforming the ways of a specifik university, and together they will form the national union, Climate Students Finland. We are here to guide you every step of the way. Contact us at international@climatestudents.com. Together we will form a global movement and help our universities practise what they teach. Agree to this campaign if you want to see the students of Finland join the Climate Students movement. #PracticeWhatYouTeach Photo by Folke Bosund

You are absolutely right! I just learned that e.g. Chalmers' emissions derive from their employees' air traffic (~95%). And professors who teach Meteorology and Climate Change at GU fly around the world every week.
•

Indeed! Aviation is extremely important to lower emissions from universities.
