Axfood announced accelerating the pace of its phase-out of fossil fuels. In the two upcoming years, Axfood will transition its own and procured transports between warehouses and stores to renewable fuel or electricity – five years ahead of plan. The initiative could prevent 37,000 tons of CO2e emissions per year. I am looking forward to seeing this being implemented. A question to Axfood: what else are you doing to reduce your CO2e emissions? When replacing your vehicle fleet, do you take into account circularity (of vehicles' parts, of materials, etc.) or do you just replace the whole fleet without keeping any parts of the old? Do you plan on increasing the percentage of local products in what you sell (to reduce absolute emissions of transportation)? Axfood gearing up and phasing out fossil fuels over two-year period
Following the lowering of Sweden’s emission reduction obligation at the end of last year, CO\2\ emissions from transports are increasing significantly. As such, Axfood has decided to accelerate the...

Many parts of the world are facing historical droughts with farmers bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. In the wake of the global water shortage, Axfood, a leading food retailer in Sweden, has decided to act on the way it works, knowing too well that the purchase it makes has an influence on water use. Since 2017, the company has worked in a joint project with the policy institute SIWI to investigate which water standards it can set demands for in the supply chain. It has now introduced a water routine that applies to fresh fruit and vegetables. This routine considers the fact that countries and regions with water stress and water thirsty crops, require different types of water standards. For certain regions and crops with extreme water risks, Axfood will now refrain from purchasing completely unless the supplier can demonstrate the Alliance for Water Stewardship standard or specific projects that address the water risks in the catchment area. The routine will be tested during the autumn Axfood brand products. I would love to know more about how Axfood will implement this and what impact it will have on the products available in the supermarket! Technically that would mean no more avocados from Chile or Peru in Willys and Hemköp for example? https://www.aktuellhallbarhet.se/alla-nyheter/ah-direkt/axfood-slutar-kopa-frukt-och-gront-dar-vatten-hotas/

There are many things that are wrong when I go grocery shopping. But the issues with potatoes are always quite striking to me, maybe because Sweden produces most of the potatoes it consumes, Sweden's supply rate for potatoes was 98% in 2020, and it's a base ingredient for many here. So here are two things that I have spotted in the recent weeks that got me angry at the supermarket: On the left: Basic potatoes imported from Israel wrapped in plastics and then sold as the bargain of the week with the country of import only written in small letters. On the right: The first "new potatoes" of the season, in plastic containers + wrapped in plastic, sold as a luxury item for the price of 399kr a kilo (40€!!) when the usual price is around 20kr (2€). I am pretty sure most of them will end up in the dumpster. What do you think about these? I personally think that this doesn't make any sense. https://www.lrf.se/politikochpaverkan/foretagarvillkor-och-konkurrenskraft/nationell-livsmedelsstrategi/sjalvforsorjning/

Hi! Thanks for the engagement! Will try to answer the questions. First, even though we sell almost only Swedish potatoes, there is a very limited volume of imported fresh potatoes before the Swedish fresh potatoes season has started. As soon as there is fresh Swedish potatoes of larger quantities and reasonable prices, the import stops. Second, the high price of the fresh potatoes on the other photo indicates that this is probably the first exclusive Swedish fresh potatoes, bought locally by the store itself, and packed in that way in small volumes. When it comes to plastics, Axfood’s goal is to reduce the use of plastics by 25% to 2025, and to only use renewable plastic packaging made of renewable or recycled material by 2030. To reach those goals, we encourage our stores to think and act in a sustainable way, and act in a way where the right plastics is used in the right way. You can read more about plastics, packaging and our sustainability goals and development in Axfood’s sustainability report 2021 (page 96 for plastics and packaging): https://www.axfood.com/globalassets/startsida/investerare/rapporter-och-presentationer/2021/axfood-annual-and-sustainability-report-2021.pdf

This is crazy... Potatoes are massively produced and also super cheap in Sweden, so there is really no reason to import them And 399kr a kilo?????

In 2020, a collaboration between Willys and Axfood's brand Garant was initiated in order to find new, innovative ways to combat food waste by collaborating on supplier and store levels. The collaboration resulted in the items Fula Fiskar (Ugly Fish), Maxad lax (Maxed-out Salmon) and Skeva skivor (Skewed Slices). Ugly fishes consist of parts of breaded cod that previously were sorted out because the breading was chafed or the pieces were uneven. Skewed slices are waste pieces from the production of sliced sandwich toppings, and Maxed salmon consists of waste pieces of sliced smoked and cured salmon. All the items are now being sold at Willys for a reduced price. Amazing first step against food waste! There is so much things you can do within the food store (including a better merchandising : that helps reducing waste!) but also, let's not forget, early on too (stock's management, not purchasing too much just to feed the trash!)

There are a famous Swedish quote - "It is not the big incomes you get rich on. It's the small expenses." Sometimes I think the best way to solve big problems (read: the climate crisis), is to do small things, step by step. If you are an organization with 100 persons and you want to improve your business with 100 percent - Every person just have to be 1 percent better. My idea to Axfood is that they demand all bread supplier to do like Cole’s Bread in Australia. It´s a small step, but remember that small steps actually have change the world. As an example the Berlin wall was taken down "brick by brick". https://www.google.se/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-9945681/amp/Coles-replaces-plastic-bread-tags-recycled-cardboard-reduce-waste-Australian-landfill.html https://www.coles.com

Brazil makes cuts on environmental budget, the deforestation of Amazonas continues & increases. President Bolsonaro now also suggests new law to legalize past deforestation and land theft. Amazon plays a key role for the future of our planet, this madness has to stop! A major food store chain like yours has the power to, joined with others, put financial pressure on the decision-makers of Brazil. Make sure Bolsonaro knows that shelves will be emptied from Brazilian products if they continue on this path of destruction! This climate idea goes out to several food store chains of Sweden.
