Three months after having given notice to BNP Paribas to cease all financial support for new fossil energy projects, the collective Affaire BNP, which consists of Notre affaire à tous, Oxfam, and Friends of the Earth France is officially taking the French bank to court for being one of the main funders of climate chaos. 👩⚖️
As they show, BNP Paribas has been the champion of climate chaos for several years; the bank is:
🛢️1st European Funder of the development of fossil fuels
💰2nd global funder of Total Energies
🥶1st world financier of the exploitation of the Arctic
It will be up to the Paris court to investigate what could become a historic trial. "This climate litigation against a commercial bank is undoubtedly the first of a long series, all over the world", thinks Justine Ripoll, of Notre Affaire à tous. The associations are basing their case on the law on the duty of vigilance which obliges large French companies to identify the risks and prevent serious harm to the environment and to human rights that may result from their activities. In this case, the NGOs criticize BNP Paribas for not applying it in climate matters, by continuing to finance companies that develop new oil and gas projects.
It will be interesting to follow this groundbreaking case and see the results of the investigation!
