AlgoBio has developed a novel flame retardant using a biopolymer made from invasive brown algae. The uniqueness of this product is that it is non-toxic as opposed to the vast majority of flame retardants found on the market. With two different coating formulations that both surpass the industry standard flame retardancy level, they have a burn rate that is 10x better than the requirement. By using renewable and natural resources the flame retardant is non-toxic and has virtually no carbon footprint. The production is simple and does not require elaborate machinery meaning cleaner production.

Great questions! This invasive seaweed is found on the coasts of British Isles, mainland Europe and North America. It can either be harvested from ocean floors or farmed. If you’re curious, this article has a lot of great information about it: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11157-015-9381-7#:~:text=The%20brown%20seaweed%20Sargassum%20muticum,although%20time%2Dconsuming%20and%20costly

Interesting, to what area is the species of algea invasive? Is it harvested in wild ocean floors? Is there a risk of it being "too successful" requiring plantations?
