As part of Climate Week 2024, members of Law Students for Climate Accountability, in collaboration with Lawyers Are Responsible, staged a striking demonstration in New York Harbour, projecting a 200-foot video highlighting the devastating impact of fossil fuel investments. The event aimed to spotlight the role of major law firms and financial institutions in facilitating climate destruction.
The demonstration, which coincided with a walking tour of New York’s 6th Avenue to protest six major law firms involved in fossil fuel transactions, called attention to the staggering $533 billion in fossil fuel deals facilitated by law firms and $705 billion in finance loans in 2023 alone. The video, paired with Gideon Mendel’s powerful Submerged Portraits of flood victims, emphasised the human toll of the climate crisis.

“It is critical that people understand the often counterproductive role played by law firms in the United States in helping to block the transformational change needed to save the planet. Firms that continue to enrich themselves by working for climate deniers in the fossil fuel industry should be boycotted by law students and questioned by the rest of the legal profession. Profiting from planetary destruction is the worst kind of law.” Said environmental lawyer and activist Steven Donziger. 💚
As climate disasters grow more frequent, the organisers urged lawyers to rethink their defence of fossil fuel companies and to join the movement for climate justice by refusing to support new fossil fuel projects. Powerful and beautiful action! See the giant video projection here.
