Climate Action News - November 6 2019 7 PM CEST Climate Courage & Crisis Communication - How Women Lead The Way Have you noticed the massive shift going on? We no longer talk about climate change as an abstract, future threat. We are in a climate crisis, and some of us have begun to connect it deeply to our lives and deeds. Children go on school strike, some politicians propose serious legislation, newspapers go from ”change” to ”crisis”, professionals quit their traditional careers to work for the climate, and social media becomes a tool for influence, not consumption. Remarkably often, the leading voices in this transition are female. They move beyond the cynicism of smart and strategic communication and politics to embrace personal courage, unquestionable devotion, and empathy as the only way forward. Welcome to a show were we explore how women show the way towards a new paradigm of climate courage and crisis communication. Katharine: In one of the previous Climate Action News broadcasts, there was discussion about empathy as a factor in the climate advocacy movement. I often witness that the our mere humanity left out of the conversation when climate solutions are being discussed -- our connection to the earth as home, our emotional intelligence, our spiritual and psychoemotional need to feel our connection to Nature. I heard you speak of the Sacred Feminine during the broadcast, and I'd like to know your view of how we can bring these "softer" concepts and qualities into the hard-hitting world of politics and business as we develop our responses to the climate crisis...

Thank you for your input Atul. We hear alot about extreme Indian heats, draughts and loss of freshwater and more than 30,000 farmers having committed suicide as a result and Indian authorities obstructing by building in a heavily fossil fuel dependent state and economy. Can you share hope from Indian cities, municipalities and bottom-up organizations proving that India can leapfrog from fossil dependence to build resilient communities?

          233 w

Urban centres contribute maximum towards climate change, in line with that, India has Five cities in the C40 Cities with a climate action plan. However, the progress is slow and a lot needs to be done. Pune, where I live, has also put forth an ambitious plan to make the city Carbon Neutral by 2030. Overall, there are several organizations working at grassroot level in India, but the main impact has to come from the government and change in policies. In fact the point you have made in your question about leapfrogging from fossil dependence is a golden opportunity for India and it is what India is also striving for. Having said that, to bring about a change of such a large magnitude with 1.3 billion people and world's sixth largest economy is not an easy task. This needs a major policy change, extremely bold decision making and devise absolutely new methods. In my opinion, this can be achieved by adopting Doughnut Economics.

Atul - great idea to highlight Kate Raworth! since the economy is the engine running our societies, doughnut economics could have a great impact in many areas.

Absolutely, that is the whole idea. To bring about an impactful change the fundamental policies of the country needs to be revisited and also what is termed as "progress" of a nation. I believe, Kate Raworth has been able to get to the root cause of this whole mess.

Great discussion! I have a question for Jill. I think that it's really important that climate advocacy is not perceived as elitist, how do we expand the climate movement to new groups so that it grows as a "populist" cause?

God evening Katharine... Food waste is the #3 priority according to Project Drawdown and #3 in emitter of greenhouse gases, had it been a country. Can food waste be addressed without a systems approach and how to address over-production and low price that’s built into the system and that cause waste?

A question to Sweta and Nick. According to IMF the fossil energy industry receives 36 times more subsidies/tax support than renewable energy. When will our politicians stop this unjust support? Thanks

You ask when--I don't know. but yes it is absurd--production subsidies, consumer subsidies--and every time the price of a barrel of oil soars, poorer countries pay out so much in fossil fuel support, they lose money for development--perhaps govs need to convince their public's that if they take away subsidies they have alternative uses for the money--schools, climate action, health--rather than it just disappearing !

Also Jacob, why do you think conservative parties in particular has such difficulties adhering the advice on the scientists in this matter? These parties are usually quick to proclaim their love for science in all other reas of politics.

For Jacob: What do you think are the most vital messages that climate crisis responders (so to speak) -- like everyone involved in and watching Climate Action News, for instance -- need to be communicating repeatedly right now?

This question is for you Jacob. Since you work both with communication and sustainability, maybe you could reflect wisely on this question: It is obviously very hard for scientists and other experts to convince governments and parliaments about the changes needed to be done in other to make the planet habitable even in the future. How could the message be communicated in a form that actually have the desired effect?

I myself have a question for Sweta: I'm concerned that moving too fast with the transition curbing emissions will cause violent protests like the ones we saw with the yellow vests in France. What do you think about this? How do we build broad support so that this doesn't happen?

The behavioral approach to addressing this is to identify and apply the necessary resources to interview (both qualitatively and quantitively) samples of people from the most disenfranchised, and from the protesters (if feasible) to understand the narratives they hold in their brains. Once we truly understand their concerns and motivations, we can begin to develop communications with compassion and understanding to help ease them into cooperation with the policies for societal overhaul that we will need to combat the climate crisis. The only way to achieve widespread cooperation is to invest in understanding their existing mental models, neural networks, and/or schemas (interchangeable concepts).

It is well known that just discussing climate in a scientific or political way does not change mindsets or motivate most people for long term action. Using stories, creativity and art provides a new way to reach people— to reach new people and to reach people on a deeper level. These practices are often under appreciated as strategies but are vital for helping us imagine and move toward a new future. If you are interested, Check out my storytelling work at DearTomorrow.org

Jill, what are some of the things you or parents in your network recommend to say to our kids about the climate crisis – in a way that instills them with motivation to act rather than imbues them with overwhelm or hopelessness?

Hi Lisa, This is an excellent and important question. First, when communicating with kids about climate change, it’s important to provide them with age appropriate information. With younger kids you can discuss the importance of nature, protecting your community and also show them solutions in your home or community. With older kids around 8-10 and if you think your child is ready, you can start talking about climate change and it’s impacts. At this age 8-12, we’d recommend developing solutions together as a family. For high school kids, you can have more direct conversations. I think finding and taking action, and learning about other people who are acting is important for maintaining a positive outlook. Our groups will be developing more resources for it, so check back at ourkidsclimate.org

Climate Change is vital. Changing the Emotional Climate is essential. The Climate Crisis is a reflection of an unaddressed Human Crisis - a global dysfunctional family of orphaned nations all hungry for an uber Parent Figure to reassure them ... to validate their ultimate need for a sense purpose and inherent worth. Leadership is easily blamed, but blame is not the name of this climactic Climate Changing game. Understanding is. Leadership is nothing more than multitudes of individuals who are grown and nourished in healthy soil ... or not. And these individuals are part of families which are part of communities which are part of societies which comprise the overall fabric of Humanity in sanity, or insanity. Today's conversation is desperately needed and long overdue. If individuals learned to love their Self ... and then learned to connect the dots between that Self & Other ... and then learned to connect that Self & Other to Mother (Earth) ... then our overall behaviour would reflect that of Nurture - and of the forgotten Love Story between Nature & Human Nature. So we need to reallllly question why this is such a love-deprived world and how we can "see'd" the change with a creative global warming event - of the human heart :-). Thanks so much, Ingmar & Co. www.SIMPOL.org
