Fossil-fuel companies to be sidelined at Glasgow climate change conference

Companies that haven’t set out credible emissions-reduction plans, as determined by a U.N.-backed third party, will be unable to sponsor the event, run workshops and panel discussions, or book exhibition space in areas managed by the U.K. government. Oil companies BP and Shell are particularly targeted by this decision and will have to keep a lower profile during the November conference. To agree on science-based plans for how companies will reduce carbon emissions is seen as a prerequisite for involvement in the event for the U.K. organizers. Something oil companies are lacking. Fossil-fuel companies have sometimes sponsored previous COP meetings, particularly when hosted in their home country which drew criticism from environmental groups.
