New Zealand is halving public transport fares to ease the pain of sharply rising petrol costs, as fuel oil prices soar following Russiaβs invasion of Ukraine. The prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, announced that the country would cut fares by 50% amid a suite of other changes to try to ease sharp increases in the cost of living. Even though the NZ government is also cutting petrol excise duties and road user charges by 25c a litre, I think that halving the price of public transport is great leadership as it provides an alternative. βThe global energy crisis has quickly become acute,β Ardern said. βWe cannot control the war in Ukraine nor the continued volatility of fuel prices but we can take steps to reduce the impact on New Zealand families." An example for other world leaders to follow? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/14/new-zealand-halves-public-transport-fares-as-petrol-prices-soar-amid-russia-ukraine-war

And they removed tax from fuel to make it cheaper to drive. Public transport in NZ is poor, with urban sprawl. NZ is not a good example. I am a NZ'er.

I know, as I wrote it's not perfect, and I have some NZ friends who told me about the lack of public transport in NZ and the need to have a car in most places, but I still think it's great to see leaders trying other solutions and it should be encouraged.

I wish Sweden would do the same. This is such an obvious, smart and simple climate solution.

Yes, instead of sending money to all car owners π

This is quite a good incentive..We need a quick transition to renewables since it's the only cure and alternative to the spiking fuel prices as well as the escalated war in Ukraine.

This is what should be done worldwide! Governments should do that, along with developing the public transport network
