South Africa has 63 independently owned solar power stations that are operational, under construction, or still awaiting financial close, totalling more than 4,400MW. This is according to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s (DMRE’s) IPP Projects database, which lists South Africa’s forthcoming and operational renewable power projects. Of the total 4,412MW solar generating capacity listed on the database, only 2,797MW — 64% — is operational. https://mybroadband.co.za/news/energy/535243-south-africas-solar-power-plants-with-over-4400mw-capacity.html

If there could be some degree of respite for the common folk during this year’s overheated summer, it might be fewer electricity outages. And they might want to thank China for that. Electricity generation by Indian power plants fired by imported coal has nearly doubled in the first three weeks of April from a year earlier as global prices of the polluting fuel have declined by about 30%. https://www.livemint.com/industry/imported-coal-power-plants-electricity-generation-11714116357679.html

Airlines in the UK will be required to progressively switch to greener but more expensive fuel sources under government plans to help the heavily polluting industry decarbonise. Ten per cent of all jet fuel on flights taking off from the UK will need to be made up of so-called “sustainable aviation fuels”, or SAFs, by 2030, the government said on Thursday. https://www.ft.com/content/1ecaac55-3269-4779-b9d8-3005f9a1b681
