The UK's National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has raised concerns about the government's policy U-turns on net zero targets, which have delayed progress on vital infrastructure needed for economic growth. As the chair of the NIC, Sir John Armitt emphasizes that the government can no longer "duck key decisions" as Britain falls behind on infrastructure for rail, energy, water, and flood defenses. This failure to address these issues is seen as jeopardizing climate targets and stifling economic growth. The NIC's review finds several specific areas of concern, including the government's failure to meet heat pump rollout targets, the need for massive investment in the electricity grid, the lack of a coherent plan for rail connectivity in the north and Midlands, and the need to address issues like the sewage crisis and flood risk. The report calls for urgent, large-scale investment and policy decisions to address these challenges in the next 12 months. The government's policy reversals on net zero targets are deeply concerning, as they risk significantly delaying critical infrastructure upgrades needed to drive sustainable economic progress and meet climate objectives. Decisive, long-term commitment from policymakers is essential to get the UK back on track. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/16/net-zero-u-turns-will-hit-uk-infrastructure-say-government-advisers

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/tech-company-breaks-ground-worlds-080000441.html Germany-based international tech company recently began building what will be the world's first carbon-neutral cement plants. These could be the next big thing in the fight against rising global temperatures. The facilities, located in Lägerdorf, Germany, will utilize "pure oxyfuel" technology developed by experts at Thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies. According to Interesting Engineering, this process uses pure oxygen in lieu of ambient air during the combustion process, which will help capture nearly 100% of the carbon dioxide produced."That shows once again that the future is climate-neutral," said Daniel Günther, Minister-President of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, per Interesting Engineering.Cetin Nazikkol, chief strategy officer at Thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies, told the publication that the company is looking to expand the technology and is already supplying equipment and services to about one-third of cement plants across the globe.Globally, cement production accounts for as much as 9% of global carbon pollution, Interesting Engineering reported, citing an article from Scientific American. Carbon dioxide is a planet-heating gas, and reducing pollution will help us protect communities from the worst impacts of a warming world. According to the United Nations, these include hotter temperatures, more severe storms, increased droughts and disease, rising ocean levels, species loss, food insecurity, poverty, and displacement. For instance, unseasonably high temperatures coupled with severe drought have crushed olive harvests on the Iberian Peninsula, devastating farmers and causing global olive oil prices to spike. Meanwhile, the Midwest region of the United States suffered an abnormally active fire season in the early months of 2024 because of a warmer-than-average, dry winter.

A report from climate organizations has revealed that banks have provided nearly $7 trillion in financing to fossil fuel companies since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. This finding suggests that the banking sector has failed to meaningfully shift its financing activities to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming. The report indicates that banks are still heavily supporting the expansion of the fossil fuel industry, despite the urgent need to transition to clean energy sources. The extensive financial support provided by banks to fossil fuel companies is a concerning issue that undermines global efforts to address climate change. Despite the commitments made under the Paris Agreement, the financial sector appears to be lagging in its efforts to support the transition to renewable energy. This disconnect between the stated climate goals and the actual investment decisions of banks raises questions about the sincerity and effectiveness of the financial industry's actions to combat climate change. Policymakers and regulators may need to consider stronger measures to ensure the banking sector aligns its financing activities with the imperative of transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. #movethemoney https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/13/banks-almost-7tn-fossil-fuel-firms-paris-deal-report

We've all heard of China's panda diplomacy. Now Malaysia has unveiled a controversial scheme: gifting orangutans to countries that purchase the country's palm oil. Sounds like a smart idea right? 🤡 This plan has provoked a wave of criticism from conservationists who see it as a clear attempt to mask the devastating impact of palm oil on orangutan populations and their habitats.🚨🦧 Palm oil, the ingredient found in everything from shampoo to ice cream, is driving the critically endangered orangutans to the brink of extinction. The expansion of palm oil plantations is a leading cause of deforestation, destroying the forests that orangutans rely on for survival. Yet, Malaysia, the world's second-largest palm oil exporter, is doubling down on this destructive industry, using orangutans as pawns in a cynical game of "diplomacy." Stuart Pimm, ecologist & conservation expert, slammed the plan as "obscene" and "repugnant," highlighting the hypocrisy of destroying orangutan habitats only to offer the animals as diplomatic gifts. Unlike China's panda conservation efforts, which include state-of-the-art facilities and protected areas, Malaysia's proposal lacks any meaningful commitment to orangutan welfare or habitat preservation. Environmental groups such as WWF call on Malaysian officials to prioritise real solutions, like reversing deforestation rates and promoting sustainable practices. With millions of hectares of forests lost and orangutan populations plummeting, the urgency for action has never been clearer. Orangutans are not commodities to be traded for diplomatic favours. They are sentient beings whose very existence is under threat. If Malaysia truly cares about conservation, it must abandon this unhinged plan and focus on protecting orangutans in their natural habitats. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/12/climate/malaysia-orangutan-diplomacy-conservation-intl-hnk/index.html https://www.wwf.org.my/?32605/Opinion-Editorial-Orangutan-Diplomacy#:~:text=%E2%80%9COrangutan%20Diplomacy%E2%80%9D%20and%20what%20it,of%20concern%20towards%20biodiversity%20conservation.

Considering how unpredictable the weather has become all over the world, one can never say what kind of weather to expect the next day. But what if we had a device that would help us predict the heat up to seven days in advance? That’s right! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has partnered with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to come up with a new tool called HeatRisk. This device helps guide those who are particularly vulnerable to heat and need to take extra steps for their health when the temperature soars. The new tool works by providing historical context for high-temperature forecasts, thereby identifying the nature and intensity of heat at any given time. It can forecast temperature for the next 24 hours to up to seven days. For now, HeatRisk will be able to predict the temperature across the contiguous U.S. It has a color-coded and numbered scale ranging between zero and four, and minor to extreme, which helps in identifying the risk of heat-related impacts. A new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has unveiled a grim reality: climate change is not only reshaping our environment but also profoundly affecting workers' health and safety worldwide. Released on April 22, 2024, the report "Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate," shows that 70% of the global workforce is at risk because of climate change. According to the ILO, more than 2.4 billion workers (!!), out of a total global workforce of 3.4 billion, are at risk of exposure to climate-change-related health hazards. This includes an alarming number of workers facing excessive heat, with estimates indicating a rise from 65.5% to 70.9% since 2000. The consequences of this exposure are dire, resulting in approximately 18,970 deaths and 2.09 million disability-adjusted life years annually due to occupational injuries attributed to excessive heat. Yet, the impact extends beyond heat exposure. Climate change creates what the report terms a "cocktail of hazards," contributing to various severe health conditions. Among these are cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, kidney dysfunction, and mental health conditions, affecting millions of workers globally. Some key results: 1.6 billion workers are exposed to UV radiation, leading to over 18,960 work-related deaths annually from nonmelanoma skin cancer. 1.6 billion workers are at risk of workplace air pollution, resulting in up to 860,000 work-related deaths among outdoor workers annually. Over 870 million agricultural workers are exposed to pesticides, with more than 300,000 deaths attributed to pesticide poisoning annually. 15,000 work-related deaths yearly due to exposure to parasitic and vector-borne diseases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY7MU4gPMK0 "It's clear that climate change is already creating significant additional health hazards for workers," warns Manal Azzi, OSH Team Lead at the ILO. If we want to tackle the dual crises of climate change and work safety, we need to consider occupational safety and health in climate change responses. Ahead of the 1st of May, International Workersä Day, let's remember that ensuring safe and healthy working environments is a fundamental principle and right at work. https://www.ilo.org/resource/news/climate-change-creates-cocktail-serious-health-hazards-70-cent-worlds

Kenya and the World Bank have unveiled a guidebook in order to boost the participation of local enterprises in carbon markets. Stephen Odua, director of business environment at the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, said the manual provides practical steps for private sector organizations seeking to develop projects that contribute to the avoidance or mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. “Kenya has missed out on carbon markets given that many enterprises have a limited understanding of carbon markets, and significant capacity building is needed,” Odua said in a statement released on Saturday in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Victor Ogalo, deputy chief executive officer of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, said participation in carbon markets will enable local companies to support the country’s climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. He noted that the guidebook sets out procedures and rules for enterprises exploring how to quantify and issue certified carbon credits. https://www.capitalfm.co.ke/business/2024/04/kenya-world-bank-unveil-carbon-market-guidebook-for-enterprises/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=kenya-world-bank-unveil-carbon-market-guidebook-for-enterprises

Global leader in the insurance industry, Zurich Insurance recently announced its decision to cease underwriting new fossil fuel projects. This strategic move is part of Zurich's broader initiative to distance itself from high-emission industries like metallurgical coal mining and to align its operations with sustainability goals. Sierra Signorelli, Zurich's chief executive of commercial insurance, talked about the urgency of the transition away from fossil fuels, citing the company's aim for net-zero emissions by 2050 as a guiding principle. I guess we have different definitions of "urgency" but it's a first step forward for the company. Despite generating significant premiums from fossil fuel clients in the past, US$2.1 billion in premiums from such clients in the previous year, which accounts for 7% of the company's total commercial premiums, Zurich anticipates minimal financial impact from this policy adjustment. This decision demonstrates the company's commitment to prioritising environmental stewardship over short-term profits. Zurich's decision has received positive reactions from environmental advocacy groups, pointing to it as a move towards greater accountability within the insurance industry. Moving forward, Zurich plans to engage with its highest-emission corporate clients, demanding they establish emissions reduction targets and develop strategies for achieving net-zero emissions. By shifting focus towards emerging clean-energy infrastructures and promoting sustainability, Zurich aims to set an example for its industry peers. https://www.insurancebusinessmag.com/us/news/environmental/zurich-insurance-stops-underwriting-new-fossil-fuel-projects-484241.aspx

The Environmental Protection Agency of Sweden stated that the country will not meet its climate targets without additional political measures to reduce carbon emissions. Despite strong EU policies and leadership in green transition within the industry, further political decisions are necessary to achieve the climate goals. Recent changes in biofuel mixing requirements and fossil fuel tax cuts are expected to raise emissions, making it challenging to meet the targets. The EU's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 requires Sweden to decrease its use of fossil fuels and accelerate the electrification of transportation. While the government is committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2045, there are still pending political decisions and budget allocations to be made. It's concerning to see that Sweden is facing challenges in meeting its climate targets, especially with the recent policy changes expected to increase emissions. There is an urgent need for further political action and budget allocations to address climate change. Additionally, the impact of rising sea temperatures and human activities on the coral reefs in the archipelago highlights the broader environmental consequences of not meeting these targets, affecting both the ecosystem and tourism. This underscores the importance of swift and effective measures to mitigate climate change and its impacts. https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/sweden-will-miss-its-climate-goals-without-policy-changes-environment-agency-2024-04-12/ https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2024-04-12/sweden-will-miss-its-climate-goals-without-policy-changes-environment-agency-says

The federal government has mandated municipal water systems to remove six synthetic chemicals known as PFAS, which are linked to cancer and other health issues, from tap water. These "forever chemicals" are found in various everyday items and have been associated with serious health concerns. The Environmental Protection Agency's new regulation aims to significantly reduce PFAS exposure in drinking water, but it has raised concerns about the financial burden on water utilities and the potential impact on water rates. Despite the costs, public health advocates emphasize the importance of addressing the dangers posed by PFAS, while industry groups and some officials question the feasibility and economic impact of the new regulation. This action by the federal government demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting public health and addressing the potential risks associated with PFAS in drinking water. It's an important move that reflects a proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of communities across the country. This regulation not only prioritizes the health and safety of citizens but also sets a valuable precedent for environmental stewardship and responsible governance. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/10/climate/epa-pfas-drinking-water.html

The Greenpeace investigation revealed that IKEA's furniture production is contributing to the destruction of some of Europe's last ancient forests, particularly in the Romanian Carpathians. These forests are home to diverse wildlife and plant species, yet they are being compromised due to wood sourcing for popular IKEA products. The report emphasizes the urgent need for stricter protection measures and calls on IKEA to uphold its sustainability commitments by addressing the impact of its supply chain on old-growth forests. India's recent shift towards renewable energy (RE) projects represents a significant advancement in the country's quest for sustainable and environmentally friendly power generation. While this transition offers environmental and energy security benefits, it also presents unique challenges in designing infrastructure capable of withstanding local climatic conditions. In response to this, the Ministry of Power has introduced a comprehensive procedure to ensure that renewable energy plants are designed with careful consideration for temperature extremes, thereby enhancing the resilience and efficiency of India's green power initiatives. This approach involves a meticulous evaluation of design temperatures for renewable energy plants, incorporating maximum temperature records from various locations across India, as provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). By utilizing temperature data from over 389 measuring stations spanning from 2001 to 2023, renewable energy developers now have access to a robust dataset reflecting climatic conditions and geographical changes over time, serving as a crucial foundation for calculating higher temperature extremes that renewable energy generating stations must withstand. An innovative aspect of this procedure is the method for determining relevant temperature data for a specific renewable energy plant. Developers are instructed to identify the nearest IMD weather measuring station to their plant and use the station's temperature data as the basis for design calculations. This localized approach ensures that each renewable energy project is optimally tailored to its specific environment, significantly reducing the risk of temperature-induced failures and maximizing operational efficiency. Furthermore, to address the global climate change scenario and provide an additional safety margin, the highest recorded temperature values at these stations are rounded up to the next higher integer, with an added margin of 1°C. This cautious approach to design temperature assessment underscores the commitment to reliability and sustainability in India's renewable energy sector. https://solarquarter.com/2024/04/10/indias-climate-smart-approach-designing-resilient-renewable-energy-infrastructure/

Fossil fuel producers, led by the US, are set to significantly increase oil and gas extraction from newly approved projects by the end of the decade, posing a serious threat to the agreed climate goals. Despite warnings from experts and organizations like the International Energy Agency, the industry continues to forge ahead with new oil and gas activity, with the US taking the lead in new projects. This relentless pursuit of fossil fuels not only jeopardizes the planet's chances of staying below the 1.5C global heating threshold but also undermines efforts to mitigate the climate crisis. The report highlights the urgent need for a shift away from new oil and gas infrastructure in order to avoid catastrophic consequences for the planet. It's alarming to see the continued expansion of oil and gas projects despite the clear warnings about their detrimental impact on the climate. It's Heartbreaking to see the lack of response to such a critical issue. The urgency of addressing climate change cannot be overstated, and it's disheartening to witness the continued pursuit of activities that jeopardize our planet's future. This actions highlights the importance of reevaluating our reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to more sustainable energy sources in order to safeguard the planet's future. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/mar/28/oil-and-gas-fossil-fuels-report

Kenya's government has proposed a plan to allow miners to operate within national parks and protected areas across the country. This announcement was made during a meeting on Monday, March 25, featuring Cabinet Secretaries Alfred Mutua (Tourism) and Salim Mvurya (Mining). The move was welcomed by Taita Taveta's Governor Andrew Mwadime, whose county is known for its rich mineral resources. Governor Mwadime announced plans to grant artisanal miners access to national parks and protected areas for mineral exploration and exploitation during a meeting with the Cabinet Secretaries. This move has been controversial, with concerns about environmental impact and wildlife safety. While some argue that mining can help restore barren areas and benefit local communities, others worry about the potential harm to the parks' biodiversity and integrity. It's important to consider the potential consequences of allowing mining in national parks, as it could lead to environmental degradation and threaten the delicate balance of these protected areas. Balancing economic development with conservation efforts is crucial to ensure the long-term sustainability of these natural habitats. https://www.kenyans.co.ke/news/98969-kenya-floats-proposal-allow-miners-explore-national-parks-and-protected-areas
