Fossil fuel companies are profiting from the destruction of our climate. For instance, while climate records are being broken every month and the world is burning around us, fossil fuel giant BP is making big profits. It highlights the urgent need for a windfall tax to ensure that polluters support a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The UK's current windfall tax is too low and full of loopholes that let companies keep drilling for oil and gas. Instead of addressing the crisis, the government talks about climate action one day and awarding new oil and gas licenses the next day! “Those who are arguing against higher taxes on polluters are not only out of touch with public opinion, they are keeping us tied to an energy policy that is costing households the earth while paving the way for the even greater destruction of our climate.”, says Mark Ruskell MSP, Scottish Greens climate spokesperson. https://greens.scot/news/make-polluters-pay-for-climate-destruction

A new study at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research estimates the costs of environmental damage from a warming world will be six times higher than the price of limiting global warming rise to 2 degrees Celsius.🌡️📈 This is alarming! 🚨 The study shows that a hotter Earth could decrease the average worldwide income by 20% by 2050 as compared to a world without global warming. The projected damage is estimated to cost $38 trillion each year due to extreme weather events, diminished agricultural productivity, rising sea levels, and other climate-induced challenges. 💸 The cost of ignoring global warming is too high. By moving the money toward effective strategies, we can create a more sustainable and greener future for all. 🌍🌿 Read more 👇 https://www.thecooldown.com/green-tech/rising-temperatures-economic-impact-study-income-fall/

Insects serve as one of the main sources of energy that fuel the long journey for different species of birds during their migration, which is why insects matter.🪱 Birds actively look for insects in fields, forests, wetlands, and other habitats during stops, and the time of their migration often coincides with peak insect abundance, helping them get enough energy that they need before continuing their journeys. 💪🦜 Climate change and global warming are changing ecosystems and affecting insect populations, making it more important than ever to protect these creatures. Higher temperatures and changing weather patterns can lead to mismatched timing between bird migration and peak insect abundance, threatening the survival of both. Healthy insect populations support birds, pollinate plants, and keep the ecosystem balanced. 🌳🐞 Read more about how you can help insects thrive 🐛👇 https://www.southeastiowaunion.com/se-iowa-union-hometown-current/protect-insects-to-protect-birds/

Since 1980 the amount of sea ice has fallen by half and we are currently losing about 6 cm every year. The studies say the Arctic could be free of sea ice until 2030. Real Ice believes its technology might help restore melting Arctic sea ice. They are developing a system to create new layers of ice to protect the ecosystem. 🌍 By refreezing, Real Ice can add an extra 70 cm of thickness to the existing ice. The process involves drilling a hole in the ice and pumping seawater on top of the existing ice. 🕳️🌊 Exposing the seawater to the cold atmospheric temperatures causes it to freeze quickly, effectively adding to the ice layer. ❄️🧊 It is as simple as that! https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/06/climate/video/refreeze-arctic-sea-ice-technology-ldn-digvid

“DeSantis’ political base doesn’t believe in climate change, which is sort of like saying you don’t believe in gravity!” said Steven Cohen, a professor at Columbia University’s School of Public Affairs and director of the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management Ron DeSantis has invested billions of dollars in improving Florida’s water quality, restoring the Everglades, and aiding areas affected by rising sea levels and powerful storms. However, despite these efforts, he also has resisted addressing climate change as Florida braces for an active hurricane season! His recent actions include favoring cars over other transport modes, like Limiting bike lanes and applying restrictions on city buses. Additionally, he has approved a law that removes "climate change" from state legislation and bans offshore wind turbines, even though they're not currently used in Florida. https://eu.tallahassee.com/story/news/politics/2024/05/06/desantis-blocks-climate-change-efforts-a-partisan-fight-in-election/73546118007/

A recent study has unveiled a troubling reality: fewer than 60 multinational corporations bear the responsibility for over 50% of the world's plastic pollution, with 5 major players contributing a staggering quarter of this total. The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone, and Altria ... Congrats! You are top polluters. 🥳🎉 Led by Lisa Erdle from The 5 Gyres Institute, the study shows the direct link between plastic production and environmental degradation and proves once again that "production really is pollution." In the past 5 years, an international team meticulously collected and analysed over 1.87 million pieces of plastic waste across 84 countries. Shockingly, the bulk of this detritus comprised single-use packaging for food, beverages, and tobacco products. Despite growing public awareness and voluntary commitments by some corporations, plastic production continues to surge, with a mere 9% of plastic being recycled. As discussions on a UN Treaty for Plastic Pollution unfold, the study's findings reinforce the urgent need for a binding international agreement focusing on production measures. We can't keep producing fossil-based plastics that will end up polluting our environment and killing us slowly. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/24/survey-finds-that-60-firms-are-responsible-for-half-of-worlds-plastic-pollution

On April 14th and 15th, the United Arab Emirates experienced its heaviest rainfall in 75 years. 🌧️💧 Researchers at the World Weather Attribution Initiative found that climate change was making extreme rainfall events in the UAE between 10% and 40% more intense than they would have been without global warming. 🌡️🌏 Global warming was the most likely reason for this recent rainfall because the atmosphere in a 1.2-degree warmer world can now hold 8.4% more moisture, which is making extreme rain events more intense. The Indian Ocean is also getting warmer. And the high pressure in the Indian Ocean is surely a contributing factor to the rainfall. “The UAE floods have shown that even dry regions can be strongly affected by precipitation events, a threat that is increasing with increasing global warming due to fossil fuel burning,” said Sonia Seneviratne, a professor at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science in Zurich. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/04/25/climate/dubai-floods-climate-weather-analysis-int/index.html

In a world where 783 million people suffer from hunger, we waste over 1 billion meals every single day. But it is more than just unfinished meals. Food loss and waste generate 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and drive biodiversity loss. In 2022 the world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food. With better data, countries can target hotspots, drive innovation, and track progress to halve food waste by 2030. Cities have the greatest potential for food waste reduction and circularity and by reducing food waste in our homes, we can contribute to collective global action. 🍽️🌍 Check out the latest Food Waste Index Report 2024. With wildfires becoming more common and threatening forests, Greece wants to improve its ability to fight fires and protect people, property, nature, and the environment. Despite ongoing droughts and high fire alerts, Greece is stepping up efforts like cleaning forests to reduce the risk of wildfires in the upcoming fire season. According to Panagiotis Stampoulidis, the executive director of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund, 'Additional crews will start operating in more forests very soon, and their work will be completed by July. Their presence in forest areas is a preventive measure in itself.
