Major oil companies have misled Americans (and others) for decades about the threat of human-caused climate change. While many climate scientists, journalists, and others have known this for a long time, the extent of Big Oil’s relentless tactics to talk green and act dirty was exposed in a brilliant way to a number of high-level US politicians in a hearing before the U.S. Senate Budget Committee on May 1. The hearing was entitled “Denial, Disinformation, and Doublespeak: Big Oil’s Evolving Efforts to Avoid Accountability for Climate Change" and included a videotaped summary of a three-year investigation that pull the pants down on companies like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell and BP. In the summary, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget, and Representative Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, revealed several astonishing examples of how internal documents and private emails in case after case contradicted what the oil giants communicated publicly. “For decades, the fossil-fuel industry has known about the economic and climate harms of its products but has deceived the American public to keep collecting more than $600bn each year in subsidies while raking in record-breaking profits. It’s time for America to hold Big Oil accountable”, said Sheldon Whitehouse. ”The era of denial and deceit must come to an end”, said congressman Raskin. These guys deserve a Big Climate Love 💚 for their relentless efforts to spread the truth about the way Big Oil is greenwashing their dirty business and delaying the green transition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jzDBznWoHc Learn more and watch the full hearing. The UN Body responsible for establishing a new global carbon market has taken an important step reinforcing the protection of environmental and social human rights. The new safeguards allow people affected by activities under the mechanism to appeal decisions or file a grievance. This is a step towards developing a new international carbon market that sets the benchmark for high integrity carbon credits. "This is a defining moment," said Maria AlJishi, Chair of the Supervisory Body, in a press statement. "With the introduction of the Appeals and Grievances Procedure, we're establishing new avenues to empower vulnerable communities and individuals, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are upheld." The Appeals and Grievances Procedure comes into effect immediately. For more info, read the Supervisory Body’s meeting report

So it has finally happened. The world's most polluting oil company, Saudi Aramco, has joined forces with one of the world's most corrupt global organizations, FIFA. Well, what can one say? A match made in hell? Just last month, Saudi Aramco's CEO Amin Nasser said the current energy transition strategy is failing, and that the world should abandon ”the fantasy” of phasing out oil. This company will now become FIFA’s Major Worldwide Partner in the energy category, with sponsorship rights for multiple events, including the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 26 and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027. Ironically, while FIFA will now actively spend the next four years sportswashing the state-owned Saudi Arabian oil giant, it will not even get what it wants in return. FIFA claims to want to spread football to as many parts of the world as possible, but the more influence FIFA gives to mega polluter Saudi Aramco, the fewer regions in the world will be suitable for football. It will simply become too unbearably hot for players and fans or too risky in terms of climate-induced extreme weather events. But FIFA doen't seem to mind. I guess its corrupt board members figure they'll just build indoor arenas instead. Or use Aramco's planet-heating oil to turbocharge the outdoor AC system. What's the problem? My own opinion? We Don't Have Time for this kind of greasy madness. https://inside.fifa.com/about-fifa/commercial/media-releases/aramco-and-fifa-announce-global-partnership#

Some people still argue that we can’t afford to make the investments neccessary to fix the climate crisis. Wrong. We can’t afford NOT to make these investments. This has been proven – again – in a scientific study published in Nature. According to the study, the costs of climate-change damages could amount to $38 trillion per year by the middle of this century. This means the global economy is projected to lose 19 percent of income per capita within in the next 26 years due to global warming. These damages already outweigh the mitigation costs required to limit global warming to 2 °C by sixfold. The study was made by researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Potsdam University, and Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change. It is based on recent empirical findings from more than 1,600 regions worldwide over the past 40 years to project sub-national damages from temperature and precipitation, including daily variability and extremes. Construction of the Metropolitan Area Outer Discharge Channel began in March 1993 (Heisei 5), with a partial opening in June 2002 (Heisei 14), followed by the completion of all sections and the opening of all rivers in June 2006 (Heisei 18). https://www.ktr.mlit.go.jp/edogawa/edogawa00576.html The total cost of the project is 230 billion yen, but as of July 2021, it has been in operation for more than 131 flood control operations, an average of 7-8 times per year, and is achieving reasonable results. In recent years, urbanization has been progressing in many parts of the world, and flooding caused by torrential rains has become a problem. The flooding in Dubai the other week was also very serious. The economic benefits of this project are as follows Water treatment during torrential rains Securing water for agriculture Underground water channel power generation Job creation through public works Significant reduction in flood damage restoration costs Society without economic shutdown I believe that this project should be introduced into large-scale urban construction projects around the world, using funds such as Climate Finance.

Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, is a leading candidate to become Spain’s next EU-commissioner. This is great news for the climate. Ribera has a strong track record on climate policy and was one of the most influential policymakers of the EU’s energy and environment during Spain's EU Council presidency in 2023. In a recent interview, Rivera said she would double down on climate action if elected, and promised to work for "green diplomacy" and to make the European Green Deal the basis for greater economic prosperity. The European Election is around the corner, but how will European citizens be able to determine which candidates to trust regarding climate policy? Since action speaks louder than words, the best way is to look at how the different members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have voted on climate, energy, and environment during 2019-2024. Thanks to the EU Parliament Scoreboard, it is now easy to get an overview of this matter. BirdLife Europe, Climate Action Network Europe, European Environmental Bureau, Transport & Environment, and WWF European Policy Office have analyzed European Parliament voting records of the last five years to provide citizens with an interactive overview that scores all the national political parties and European Parliamentary Groups based on their voting performance. The EU Parliament Scoreboard looks at the individual voting behaviour of every MEP during the 2019-2024 legislative term and scores them against the voting recommendations of the five European environmental organisations. This provides a measure of each MEPs commitment to environmental sustainability - with the result being a score out of 100. Results are aggregated in the scoreboard for political groups and national parties represented in the European Parliament. Sadly, this in-depth data research reveals that only a minority of MEPs during the 2019 – 2024 mandate acted to protect Europe’s climate, nature and air quality. The good thing is that all European eligible voters can now see this – and choose to vote differently in June. See the scoreboard.

With the general elections around the corner, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains focused on lowering fuel prices. Politically, it’s probably a smart move. ”Cheaper fuel” has been a ballot winner in many other countries, not least in my home country, Sweden. But would lower fuel prices really help ”the poor,” as Modi claims it will? In the short run, any price-cut is obviously most welcome for people who are struggling with their day-to-day lives. This means reducing food prices would be a good move, or making public transport cheaper. The problem with lowering fuel prices (i.e. using the tax-payers money to increase the fossil fuel subsidies) is that this leads to increased carbon emissions at a time when we desperately need to reduce them. Fossil fuels are the main driver of the climate crisis, and those who will be hit hardest by the climate crisis are always the poor. They are most vulnerable to droughts, floods, extreme heat, and changing weather patterns. And India is unfortunately more vulnerable than most other countries in this respect. The nation's 260 million farmers depend heavily on depleting water reserves to irrigate their crops. That means they are also struggling with climate change, as about 65% of the country’s cropped area depends on rainwater. Erratic rainfall and shorter winters are harming yields, with heavy downpours causing flooding and a sudden spike in temperatures a year ago causing wheat grain to shrink. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has reported that for every 1°C increase in temperature, wheat production suffers a significant decline of 4-5 million tonnes. Climate change is also expected to have major health impacts in India, increasing malnutrition and related health disorders such as child stunting, with the poor likely to be affected most severely. According to the World Bank, Child stunting is projected to increase by 35% by 2050 compared to a scenario without climate change. Malaria and other vector-borne diseases, along with diarrheal infections, which are a major cause of child mortality, are likely to spread into areas where colder temperatures had previously limited transmission. Therefore, politicians who promise to lower the petrol price ”for the sake of the people” are actually saying: ”I promise to make life very, very difficult for your children.” Many of these politicians also claim that we simply cannot afford to make the transition to a low-carbon economy. And yes, it will cost a lot. The International Energy Agency, IEA, calculates that the world needs to spend $4.5 trillion annually by 2030 in clean energy investments to limit global warming to 1.5°C But the truth is we already have all the money we need. We are just spending it on making the climate crisis worse instead of trying to stabilize it. Fossil-fuel subsidies surged to a record $7 trillion in 2022. That’s more than governments spend annually on education (4.3 percent of global income) and about two-thirds of what they spend on healthcare (10.9 percent). So Prime Minister Modi, please ask yourself: Is this really what you would call money well spent?

The heating of our planet is taking its toll on outdoor workers around the world. Already today, farm workers in some regions of the U.S. are forced to working nighttime to avoid the heat – which makes their already hard labor even more difficult and dangerous. In a bizarre move, the state of Florida in the U.S. has now decided to make it HARDER for these workers to find shade and access to water in the heat. As reported by Inside Climate News, the new bill prohibits local governments from establishing heat protections for outdoor workers. It comes after commissioners in Miami-Dade County considered a proposal last year that would have compelled construction and agriculture companies to provide water and rest breaks when the heat index there rises to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celcius) or higher. This is another scary example of how politicians duck reality instead of implementing measures to help people and communities cope with the rising heat. But, of course, sitting in their air condition offices, politicians like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his allies probably find it hard to grasp what this thing called global warming is all about. Probably just another hallucination of the woke leftists. The CEO and President of Saudi Aramco Oil, Amin Nasser, says the world should abandon the ”fantasy” of phasing out fossil fuels. And this is not the only bizarre claim Mr. Nasser has made during the annual fossil fuel lobby conference CERAWeek in Houston, Texas. He also said that the world should stop investing in wind and solar. "We should phase in new energy sources and technologies when they are genuinely ready, economically competitive and with the right infrastructure," Nasser said. Well, the person living in a fantasy is actually Mr Nasser himself. Just look at his company´s own numbers. Aramco Oil’s profits fell 24.7% last year due to lower oil prices and volumes. And just a few months ago, the Saudi energy ministry instructed the Saudi majority-owned Aramco to stop plans to increase its maximum crude production capacity from 12 million barrels per day to 13 million barrels per day by 2027. Why? Because lack of demand. This is at the same time as there is a record build out of renewable energy globally. I’m pretty sure Amin Nasser is also aware that renewable energy sources are cheaper than fossil fuels in most parts of the world already today, and that these clean energy sources would be even more competitive if the world’s governments stopped subsidizing fossil fuels with $7 trillion per year. Few things infuriate me more than when mega-profitable oil giants decide to scale back their climate targets instead of doing the right thing and start investing heavily in alternatives to fossil energy. Polar Night Energy and the Finnish district heating company Loviisan Lämpö have entered into an agreement to build an industrial-scale Sand Battery in Pornainen for Loviisan Lämpö’s district heating network. The heating power of the new Sand Battery is 1 MW and it can store up to 100 MWh of thermal energy, making it about ten times larger than the Sand Battery in operation in Kankaanpää since 2022. The purpose of the Sand Battery is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the district heating production in the Pornainen municipality and introduce a new flexible heat production technology. The thermal energy storage medium will be crushed soapstone, a byproduct of Tulikivi's production of heat retaining fireplaces. "Loviisan Lämpö is moving towards more environmentally friendly energy production. If Donald Trump is elected US President in November, this could lead to an additional 4 billion tonnes of US emissions by 2030, compared with Joe Biden’s plans, should he be re-elected. According to Carbon Brief, which published the analysis, Trump's policies would cause global climate damage worth more than $900 billion, based on the latest US government valuations. What’s even worse, Trump’s added emissions would overshadow all climate gains made over the past years. 4 billion tonnes of extra emissions is such a large number that it would negate all of the savings from deploying wind, solar and other clean technologies around the world over the past five years. Not just once, but twice. To make another comparison: 4GtCO2e is equivalent to the combined annual emissions of the EU and Japan or the combined annual total of the world’s 140 lowest-emitting countries. Oh no! It turns out AP7 is not the only state-run Swedish pension fund investing in oil companies that are expanding their oil production. The Swedish business newspaper Dagens Industri has just revealed that the Fourth Swedish National Pension Fund, AP4, is investing heavily in the French oil giant @TotalEnergies. Niklas Ekvall, CEO of AP4, says in an interview with Swedish TV4, that ”TotalEnergies on an overall basis, is ambitiously investing in fossil free energy production.” Well, sorry Niklas, but that’s not the point. The point is that Total Energies’ CEO Patrick Pouyanné has openly stated, time and again, that his company will continue to drill for new oil. More so, he has gone so far as to warn that governments are misselling the energy transition, pretending that fossil energy is cheaper than renewables. (Spoiler: It is not. Not even with all the trillion dollars of fossil fuel subsidies included.) “We think that fundamentally this energy transition will mean a higher price of energy,” Patrick Pouyanné said in a wide-ranging interview, in which he defended his group’s two-pronged strategy to invest in renewable power, while still pursuing new oil and gas projects , including in untapped countries such as Namibia. Did you hear that, Niklas Ekwall? TotalEnergies will DRILL FOR MORE OIL! This means you should stay away from this company, not invest in it. Just a few months ago, at COP28 in Dubai, the Swedish government signed the COP28 agreement stating that we need to transition away from fossil fuels and reduce emissions by 43% by 2030. "Transitioning away" means shrinking. Not expanding. This means that YOU CANNOT INVEST IN NEW OIL. Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and arguably the world’s most well-known and influential investor, continues to invest heavily in destructive and expansive oil companies. The 93-year-old billionaire recently invested an additional $246 million in Occidental Petroleum (OXY), one of the largest oil producers in the United States. Berkshire Hathaway now holds a 28% stake in the Houston-based oil company, making it one of Berkshire’s top holdings. Occidential Petroleum has recently made big investments to be able to scale its oil drilling operations– which is exactly what science tells us oil companies MUST STOP DOING! Mr Buffet is also a big investor in Chevron, another of the world's major polluters. It should be noted that Warren Buffet also donates millions of dollars to charity, and is a big investor in renewables. But that doesn't take away the fact that Occidental Petroleum is one of his company's majors investments. Warren Buffets keeps buying shares in the company, and his stocks in the oil company is currently valued to $14 billion. Just imagine if Mr. Buffet had decided to invest all those money in clean energy instead. What a positive impact it could have had – and how he could have influenced other investors to do the same. But no. Warren Buffet ignores the science – as well the future well-being of his fellow Americans – and continues to support fossil fuels. An unprecedented collapse in EU coal and gas electricity generation in 2023 led to a record drop in power sector emissions, according to the European Electricity Review, published by think tank Ember. The EU’s shift away from fossil fuels was evident with record drops in coal generation (-26%) as well as gas (-15%). This led to the largest decline on record for EU power sector emissions too (-19%), as wind and solar grew and electricity demand fell. Renewables continued to increase as wind power generation (18%) overtook gas (17%) for the first time in 2023. “The EU’s power sector is in the middle of a monumental shift,” said Ember’s Europe programme director, Sarah Brown. “Fossil fuels are playing a smaller role than ever as a system with wind and solar as its backbone comes into view.” Fossil generation plummeted by a record 19% in 2023, accounting for less than a third of EU power for the first time. Coal fell by 26% to its lowest ever level at 333 TWh, or 12% of the EU’s electricity generation. Coal’s decline did not result in a rise in gas, which instead fell by 15%, the largest annual reduction since at least 1990 and the fourth consecutive year of gas generation decline. In contrast, wind and solar combined achieved their highest ever year-on-year increases in both generation and installed capacity, at 90 TWh and 73 GW. Together they produced a record 27% of EU electricity in 2023 — above a quarter for the first time. Learn more: https://ember-climate.org/insights/research/european-electricity-review-2024/

A global agency named Atmospheric recently announced itself with a billboard ad in central London that stated: “The climate is changing. Business shouldn’t have to.” The agency, created by Glimpse, Utopia Bureau and artist Oli Frost, isn’t a real agency. Its mission is to shine an unforgiving spotlight on the very real advertising agencies that make loads of money from greenwashing some of the biggest polluters on the planet. Atmospheric has now launched a pitch for Saudi @Aramco, the biggest and most profitable oil company in the world. The pitch was announced after the investigative climate journalism site DeSmog revealed that the American global advertising network McCann was repitching for the Saudi Aramco deal. Check out the website. It’s great! https://www.atmospheric.agency

Last week, NATO hosted its annual Climate Change and Security Roundtable in Brussels, Belgium. The event brought together government representatives from NATO member and partner countries, as well as renowned climate change experts and scientists, to discuss the impact of climate change on security. NATO Assistant Secretary General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber, David van Weel, said: “Looking ahead, governments will have to manage increasingly frequent environmental hazards, cascading climate risks, while also managing the most ambitious energy transition since the Industrial Revolution. We need to ask ourselves what this means for Allied security in the short term while also looking to longer-term defense planning and identifying measures that we should be putting in place to manage the risks alongside other defense priorities.” In a time where Big Oil lobbyists try to market fossil fuels as a solution to security issues (instead of admitting that it is a major cause of the problem), roundtables like these are much welcome and needed. Maybe events like these can also put a thought or two in the heads of all those politicians who argue for the need to increase military spending – while at the same time slashing their nations' climate budgets. Try googling the carbon footprint of war. The US armed forces has a bigger carbon footprint than most countries.

Premium car manufacturer Lexus has a big problem: It has only got one EV model for sale, while its competitors have many. However, the company’s PR department has come up with a creative way to deal with this problem: ”Hey, let's try to make our customers believe that it's better to produce combustion engine cars than EVs!" Here's how the green-washing argument goes: The minerals and metals needed for batteriers are scarce. Therefore, it is better to produce 90 self-charging hybrid cars than to build one EV. Sounds great, right? Sure, if it weren’t for one small detail. These 90 cars are actually fossil fuel cars, powered by an internal combustion engine and assisted by one or more electric motors. This makes them run on less fuel than traditional cars – which is good – but they are still primarily powered by the very resource that is currently over-heating pur planet. Which is not good. Oh, and one other small thing worth mentioning: These minerals are not as limited as Lexus suggests. They are expected to last for decades to come, and mush longer once we start recycling these batteries in a proper manner. Dear Lexus, producing 90 fossil fuel cars instead of one EV is a bad thing, not a better option. Never. Ever. There are definitely issues with the minerals needed to produce lithium batteries. And these issues need to be dealt with. But trying to make the case that batteries are a bigger problem than fossil fuels is dishonesty taken to another level. For this, you deserve a big fat Climate Warning! ⚠️ Learn more about this green-washing campaign: https://www.lexus.com/electrified

John Kerry, President Biden's special climate envoy, is about to step down in the coming weeks. He will be replaced by climate policy veteran John Podesta, a person well acquainted with We Don't Have Time. Mr Podesta was one of the keynote speakers at We Don’t Have Time’s US Launch in Washington, D.C in 2021. ”We need to transform the global economy on a size and scale that has never occured in human history. That’s an awesome challenge. So I think we should take heart from the fact that we can rise to that challenge, meet it, and transform the global economy in a way that is profound, historic and will produce equity and justice for people across the globe ”, he said during his keynote speech. John Podesta was the Former White House Chief of Staff to President Clinton, Counselor to President Obama, and Founder of the Center for American Progress. He was brought back to the White House last year to put into place an ambitious U.S. climate program revived with the $375 billion approved in the 2022 climate law. He also led the administration's climate task force. We wish him all the best of luck on this new mission. Yellow Dot is a non-profit media studio founded by film director Adam McKay to challenge polluter bullshit and mobilize action on the climate emergency. The studio has just launched a great campaign that makes it easy for anyone and everyone to spread, share and amplify the messages from climate scientists and climate news sources, and to urge leaders to listen to science. So why is this needed? Because, as 1,400 scientists and academics say in a joint statement (which you can find on the below web site): “Our political leaders are catastrophically failing us.” Who are you with? #ImWithScience Learn more: https://yellowdotstudios.com/imwithscience/

Climate risks are seldom part of policy-maker’s financial plans for the short-term future. But the Biden administration is a positive exception to this rule. A new memorandum from the White House, “Tools to support the management of near-term macroeconomic and financial climate risks,” shows that the climate crisis is now an important part of financial decision-making. The memo reads: ”This Administration is committed to sound financial and fiscal management, which now requires integrating climate risks into all areas of economic decision-making.” The memo builds on President Biden’s 2021 landmark executive order on climate-related financial risks. Among the many important suggestions is taking extreme events risk into account rather than including only information on changes in average climate conditions. It also emphasizes the need to consider the effect of climate risks on particular income groups, subnational units, and subsectors of the economy. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has just launched an eight figure ad campaign called ”Lights on Energy”. The campaign aims to ensure that oil and gas companies are allowed to burn and extract more oil and fossil gas for decades to come (but forgets to mention that this would slow down the green transition and make it impossible for the world to limit global warming to a manageable level). So, how do you sell such destructiveness to policy-makers and voters? Easy. You label the problem as a solution. Not only does the campaign claim that ”oil and natural gas are vital to our energy future.” It also argues that NOT investing heavily in fossil energy – the major cause of the climate crisis – will ”put America's future at risk”. (Most scientists would argue it's the other way around.) But hang on, it gets even weirder: Contrary to all science, the campaign finally argues that U.S. fossil gas and oil ”can play a key role in supplying the world with cleaner energy.” The whole campaign is based on the false assumption that oil and fossil gas are needed to meet the world's growing energy needs. Well, guess what? It’s not. Despite the horrendous billion-dollar subsidies paid out to the oil, coal, and gas companies, renewables are now the cheapest form of energy in most parts of the world, even in the US. And the costs of installing new wind and solar plants keep dropping. This, of course, is the reason why the fossil fuel industry is spending so much on this utterly bizarre campaign. It is an industry in a state of panic. At COP28 in Dubai, all 200 nations signed an agreement that the world needs to transition away from all fossil fuels. More and more companies, investors, industry sectors and even governments are turning their back on oil, coal and gas. Add to that the cost of premature deaths and health problems related to the burning of fossil fuels, and you have more arguments than you need to swiftly leave the era of fossil fuels behind ASAP. The American Petroleum Institute is short-sighted, greedy, and disconnected from science and reality. It deserves nothing but a BIG Climate Warning! What do you think about the campaign? Learn more about it here: https://lightsonenergy.com
