I will be speaking at Nature in the Race to Zero on Earth Day April 2022. Like all other speakers at the event, I have been asked to formulate a reply to the following question: “Decarbonizing our economies is a huge - and hugely important - challenge, deeply affecting all parts of our societies. What is the significance of mankind’s relationship with nature and the role of nature-based solutions in this transformation?” Here is my reply: I can remember marching in the streets of Old Stockholm around midnight in June 1972 with UNCHE Conference Secretary-General, Maurice Strong, leading the way behind a giant inflatable whale. We all chanted SAVE THE WHALE. It took another 12 years for the moratorium on commercial whaling. This month, Iceland, one of the last countries to practice whaling, finally announced its new policy, of whale-watching, not hunting: Meet, nor Eat. Since those first moves in 1972, nature protection and conservation in all its forms has moved to the top of the international agenda. NBS - nature-based solutions - for example, will have to provide at least 30% of the emission reductions necessary if we are to meet the 2050 global net-zero targets. Today I am working with the Chinese Government to help set up the Word Coastal Forum (to be launched at the Ramsar meeting in Wuhan this November), which - amongst other things - should help deliver the vital contribution of wetlands, mudflat, seagrasses, and mangrove forests to meeting climate targets. I am also hoping that UNFCCC COP 27, to be held in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt later this year, will adopt a Declaration of Climate Change and Coral Reefs, sponsored by key coral reef countries such as Australia, Indonesia, and the UK whose Overseas Territories in the Caribbean Sea, and Pacific and Indian Oceans have important, and threatened, coral reefs. COP 27 WILL HAVE TO DRAG THE WORLD BACK ON TRACK TO NET ZERO 2050. IT SHOULD TAKE HEART FROM WHAT STOCKHOLM 1972 ACHIEVED AND STRIVE TO DO EVEN BETTER.
