I will be speaking at Nature in the Race to Zero on Earth Day, April 2022. Like all other speakers at the event, I have been asked to formulate a reply to the following question: “Decarbonizing our economies is a huge - and hugely important - challenge, deeply affecting all parts of our societies. What is the significance of mankind’s relationship with nature and the role of nature-based solutions in this transformation?” Here is my reply: Securing future agriculture and food production is highly dependent on the available genetic diversity of crop plants. Genebanks all over the world conserve seeds and distribute plant genetic resources to researchers and plant breeders that continuously improve agriculture and produce new crop plant varieties that can provide food to a growing population in a changing climate. These resources conserved in seeds are essential for our food security. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault offers secure storage space for duplicates of seeds conserved in genebanks, - in case the genebanks lose seeds, they can get their seeds back from the “bank box” in Svalbard.
